A Woman's Rant Lyrics

A Woman's Rant
  • A mother of two young sons, Jo Dee Messina wrote this song about her younger child Jonah's sleeping troubles. "It was written in a few minutes," she said. "My youngest baby wouldn't sleep longer than two hours. One night I was sick and could barely move so I tried to wake up my husband to get the baby, but I couldn't get him to budge. After feeding the baby, burping him, changing him, I was wide awake. That's when I went downstairs and wrote 'A Woman's Rant.' It's literally a day in the life of me. Ha!"
  • Messina sings at the end of the song:

    "I'm gonna have a come-to-Jesus.
    You can guarantee.
When I walk through those pearly gates
I'm gonna have a talk with Eve."

She told Taste of Country : "That was literally a line I used to say when I was pregnant. I performed until — I did a show December 19th and my son was born January 11th. So I was big, and I was pregnant and the baby was up in my lungs. So I'd push down on my stomach and be like, 'I'm so gonna have it out with Eve when this is all done.'"

    Like a Kid Again Lyrics

Woke on the wrong side of the bed
A million details in my head,
All tryin to bring me down
They call this living but I'm not sure,
The whole thing goes by like a blur
Wish I could slow it down and do you ever look in your childrens eyes
To a simpler place in time when we could

Spin in circles til we fall down laughing
All your days begin and end in make believe and just pretend
Running barefoot in the rain, oh life was just a game
I'd trade all this real just to feel, Like a Kid Again

When did my innoncence get lost,
Where did I lose the girl that thought
    That nothing was too far
    Sometimes it's all so serious,
I'd like to rent a yellow bus and drive into the stars
And turn off the world for a day or two
Without a single thing to do but maybe,

Spin in circles til we fall down laughing
All your days begin and end in make believe and just pretend
Running barefoot in the rain, oh life was just a game
I'd trade all this real just to feel, like a kid again

Walkin on the beach, playing in the sand,
Countin all the stars, playing kick the can
Running in the sprinkler until it's almost dark,
Buying candy bars and putting fireflies in jars

Spin in circles til we fall down laughing
All your days begin and end in make believe and just pretend
Running barefoot in the rain, oh life was just a game
I'd trade all this real just to feel, like a kid again

Walkin on the beach, playing in the sand,
Countin all the stars, playing kick the can
Running in the sprinkler until it's almost dark,
Buying candy bars and putting fireflies in jars

    Like a Kid Again
  • Me was recorded between many trips and overnight stays at the hospital that Jo Dee Messina undertook to be with her mom as she went in and out of intensive care following open heart surgery. Following her operation, the songstress took her mother home so she could care for her. Messina also had to juggle her normal touring commitments and mommy duty for her own two young children. This song expresses what the singer went through.

"There's a line in it at the end of the chorus that says, 'I'd trade all this real just to feel like a kid again,'" she told Taste of Country "I couldn't get through the line because I would have at any moment traded all the real at that point to be a kid again."

"There were days Julian King (co-producer) would send me home," she added. "He would be like, 'Not today. You're too tired. You're too run down. I can hear it in your voice.' And so he would call it."

    He's Messed Up Lyrics

I, I can see, that you got your sights on him I'd like to say
Well I, well I've been there done that
    You're a game he'll play, yeah
Well I know what he has you don't want none of that, nooo

Put your dreams away, he's never gonna change
Go on and walk away, 'cause He's Messed Up.
You're gonna figure out he'll only bring you down
Go on and walk away, 'cause he's messed up.
I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole (no!)
Now that I know all the things I know
He's never gonna change. Go on and walk away.
(Yeah, yeah) Yeah, 'cause he's messed up

    Look in his eyes
You get caught in all the bullshit and the lies
Can be cruel, 'cause he doesn't play by anybody's rules.
Yeah, well he'll take, never give, 'cause it's all about him

    Ooh!

He won't care 'bout anybody else
    No he only sees himself

So put your dreams away, he's never gonna change
Go on and walk away, 'cause he's messed up.
You're gonna figure out he'll only bring you down
    Yeah, 'cause he's messed up.
I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole (no!)
Now that I know all the things I know
He's never gonna change. Go on and walk away.
(Yeah, yeah) Yeah, 'cause he's messed up

  • Jo Dee Messina originally penned this tune with Pink in mind. "I wanted to co-write it with her while she was in town, but it ended up that she had a crazy schedule," she said … so I was like, 'I'm going to finish this song anyway.'"
  • The song was inspired by a real person. "Maybe this is too much behind the song, but it's about a guy in the industry who's, like, Joe Cool," she divulged. "He just thinks he's, like, the Cat's Meow, and I had seen him backstage, and all these little girls are hanging on him."

"He's not an artist. He's not a singer. But he's just some guy that thinks he's, like, the coolest thing, and he plays that off, and girls buy into it," Messina added. "I remember seeing him backstage, with girls all around him, and I'm like, 'Dude.'"

"I was like, 'Oh, young girl. Walk away,'" she continued. "He is messed up, you know? This guy is never going to change. He's a dog. He always will be a dog. And so, that's where literally the idea came up."

    Boyfriend Lyrics

Let's be honest we don't got a lot in common when it comes down to it
You can take his breath away and light up every room when you walk through it
But I don't want you six foot legs and angel face and sophistication
Don't really want to causes scene but girl you got everything
    And I want your Boyfriend
    I'm not gonna lie
I'll be his girl when he tells you good bye
    Don't worry I won't take him cause I ain't that low
I want your boyfriend just thought you should know
That he and I go back so far oh my gosh we lived in his first truck
First time we heard Shania Twain I think we were on our way to Lubbcock
And I know you think he loves you now
Seen so many girls come in and out
    It sounds a bit insensitive
But the truth is what it is
    I want your boyfriend
    I'm not gonna lie
I'll be his girl when he tells you good bye
    Don't worry I won't take him cause I ain't that low
I want your boyfriend just thought you should know, yeah
Don't know why you act so surprised
Can't you see it in his eyes
You must have known it all this time
    Yeah
    That I want your boyfriend
To tell you the truth I'll be right there when he gets over you
What's meant to be will always find its way in the end
    I want your boyfriend
    I'm not gonna lie
I'll be his girl when he tells you good bye
    Don't worry I won't take him cause I ain't that low
    I want your boyfriend
    I want your boyfriend
    I want your boyfriend
    Just thought you should know

    Kissin' Frogs Lyrics

I'm too young to think about forever
I'm just thinkin' 'bout this Friday night
I love not knowin' where we're going
And dancin' with the boy I kinda like

I want to make all my mistakes
While I'm young enough to make
    Them once or twice
    Or maybe three times

'Cause I ain't looking for my
    Prince Charming on a horse,
No once upon a time ain't
    Where I'm at
    Yeah I don't need a Mr, tryin'
    To fit that perfect slipper
On my foot there's always time for that

So I'm gonna spend all summer long
    Sittin' on this river log,
'Cause right now there ain't nothing
    Wrong with having fun and
    Kissin' Frogs

Right now the only thing that matters
Is the radio and cherry lip gloss on
I'm happy without happy ever after
Yeah, a little makin' out don't hurt
    No one

I wanna have a little fun
Someday I'm gonna find the one that's right
    But not tonight

'Cause I ain't looking for my
    Prince Charming on a horse,
No once upon a time ain't
    Where I'm at
    Yeah I don't need a Mr, tryin'
    To fit that perfect slipper
On my foot there's always time for that

So I'm gonna spend all summer long
    Sittin' on this river log,
'Cause right now there ain't nothing
    Wrong with having fun and
    Kissin' frogs

    Yeah, kissin' frogs

I want to make all my mistakes
While I'm young enough to make
    Them once or twice
    Or maybe three times

'Cause I ain't looking for my

    Kissin' Frogs Song Chart
  • The origins of this track lie in a conversation RaeLynn had with her mother. "I get a lot of my song inspirations from talking to her," she told Billboard magazine. "I was talking about not having a boyfriend that day - my boyfriend and I had broken up a couple of months before. I said, 'Mom, I don't understand why no boys like me. I'm blonde, I think I'm funny, and I can sing a country song. What more do they need?' She said, 'Honey, you don't need a boyfriend. You're just having fun kissing frogs.' I thought 'I've got to write a song called that.'"
  • The song alludes to the fairy tale The Frog Prince, in which a princess reluctantly befriends a frog. He is magically transformed into a handsome prince after the princess kisses him. Keane's 2006 track "The Frog Prince" alludes to the same story.
