Father Sun Lyrics

I sing this song to the rising sun
I sing this song when the day is done
But I can't wait for the morning come
Sing my song to my Father Sun

Hey
Hey

Nothin' comes more guaranteed
Guarateed eternity
There before and when I'm gone
Father Sun keeps shining on

Sun, sun, sun
Waiting on the light
Sun, sun, sun
Do me right

Heal my body, warm my soul
Brown my skin to a golden glow
Simple song and it's simply sung
Ode to my Father Sun

Sun, sun, sun
Bring on the light
Sun, sun, sun
You got to do me right

Bring on fire in the sky
Bringin' on the light
Sun, sun, sun
Now when you gonna come

Hey
Hey

Beam of light or grain of sand
For every woman, child or man
Power of this world for free
With solar electricity

Sun, sun, sun
Waiting on the light
Sun, sun, sun
You got to do me right

Bring on fire in the sky
Bringin' on the light
Sun, sun, sun
When you gonna come

Sun, sun, sun

Father Sun
  • This duet with Sammy's son Aaron Hagar is a track from Sammy Hagar and Friends, the vocalist's first-ever Rock collaborations album. He told Jam! Music the inspiration for this song. "I go to this little island called Taha'a and there's about 60 people on it," he explained. "I said, 'Okay, I'm taking my family the day after Christmas. No guitar. No tape recorders. No music.' ... I was there about four days and every night at dinner they'd bring in these people from these islands. A lady beating on a drum - boom, boom, boom - and these Tahitian ukuleles and these weird string instruments and they would sing the most beautiful music, French Polynesian music. Anyways, I got so damn inspired that I bought one of those instruments off a guy, 'cause you couldn't go anywhere to buy one, so I said, 'Just sell me your thing.' And I started writing on it and wrote the song called 'Father Sun.'"
  • Hagar told Jam Music how his son Aaron ended up singing on this song. " At 40 he decides now he's going to be a singer," he explained, "He just kills me 'cause he's such a great artist. He can sing. He can play instruments. He can paint ... He's really creative, paints, draws, sculpts, builds cars from scratch. So he can do anything but if he wants to pursue a musical career, he's got good talent. I asked him to do it."

    Heavy Metal Lyrics

    Head bangers in leather
Sparks fly in the dead of the night
    It all comes together
When they shoot out the lights
    Fifty thousand watts of power
    And it's pushin' overload
The beast is ready to devour
All the metal they can hold
    Reachin' overload
    Start to explode

    [Chorus]
It's your one way ticket to midnight
    Call it Heavy Metal
Higher than high, feelin' just right
    Call it heavy metal
    Desperation on a red line
    Call it heavy metal noise

    Tight pants and lipstick
    She's riding on razor's edge
She holds her own against the boys
Yea, cuts through the crowd just like a wedge
Ohh, can you feel the static
    So many contacts being made
    We've got up front fanatics
    Tearing down the barricade
    To reach the stage
    Can you feel the rage

    [Chorus]

  • This song was used in the science fiction movie of the same name, and was also featured on the movie's soundtrack album (the film was based on a comic book). Released in 1981, Heavy Metal was an animated film with enough cartoon nudity to get an R rating (now known as NC-17) in the US.

Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, Journey, and Devo were also on the soundtrack.
  • Hagar wrote this song with Jim Peterik , who was a member of the band Survivor at the time. Hagar had just signed with Geffen Records, whose executive John Kalodner had signed Survivor and deployed Peterik to help .38 Special write songs. Kalodner arranged the writing session between Hagar and Peterik, which took place in San Francisco.

At first, the pair had trouble coming up with ideas, but then Hagar remembered that his manager had mentioned the Heavy Metal movie was in production and looking for songs, so they decided to write one for the film. They came up with the idea of two metalheads attending a rock show, and the session moved smoothly, which Hagar and Peterik coming up with riffs and lyrics based on those moments of anticipation when waiting for the band to come onstage.

They recorded a demo of the song, and Hagar later recorded it as part of his first Geffen album. An alternate version also earned a spot in the film, but not as the main theme: that honor went to "Heavy Metal (Takin' A Ride)" by Don Felder.

    High Hopes Lyrics

Another dream, goes up in smoke
    Huh!

And so fire me up, another toke
    Yeah, I'm commin' on
I've got master plans, by the dozens
A-flashin' through my brain, when I get buzzin'

    Whoa!
    Suddenly, they're gone
All that inspiration, runnin' through your head
    Instant stimulation
    Oh, your runnin' on

    You got...
    High Hopes
    And they're up in smoke

Up all night, tweakin' every detail
The way I've got it, this could never fail
Hey! This could be the big one
    High hopes
    Come and go, so high
But commin' down, fade away and die
    High hopes
I got them, more than a dream
    They all get wasted
    Yeah!

Ohhh, the inspiration, runnin' through your head
    Instant stimulation
    Your runnin' on
    Oh!
    You got...high hopes
    Your livin' on
    High hopes
    High hopes
    Oh yeah...
    But they're wasted

All that talk, is gettin' nuthin' done
Ain't it hard to move, when your body's numb
    Put it off, another day

    High hopes
    Come and goin' so high
And commin' down, fade away and die
    High hopes
They're nuthin' more than a dream
    They all get wasted

Ohhh, the inspiration, runnin' through your head
    Instant stimulation
    They're givin' you
    Oh!...you got
    Welllll Oh,
    High hopes

    Your livin' on
    High hopes
    You got
    High hopes

    High hopes
    AAAAAAH! Yeah
    High hopes
    Keep livin' on
    High hopes
    High hopes

    I Can't Drive 55 Lyrics

One foot on the brake and one on the gas, hey!
Well, there's too much traffic, I can't pass, no!
So I tried my best illegal move
Well, baby, black and white come and touched my groove again!

Gonna write me up a 125
Post my face wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
    I Can't Drive 55! Oh No!

    Uh!
So I signed my name on number 24, hey!
Yeah the judge said, "Boy, just one more...
We're gonna throw your ass in the city joint"

Looked me in the eye, said, "You get my point?"
    I said Yea!, Oh yea!
    Write me up a 125
Post my face wanted dead or alive

Take my license, all that jive
    I can't drive 55!
    Oh, yea!

    I can't drive 55!
    I can't drive 55!
    I can't drive 55!
    I can't drive 55!
    Uh!

When I drive that slow, you know it's hard to steer.
And I can't get get my care out of second gear.
What used to take two hours now takes all day. Huh!
It took me 16 hours to get to L.A.

Gonna write me up a 125
Post my face wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
    I can't drive 55!
    No, no no,

    I can't drive...
    (I can't drive 55!)
    I can't drive...
    (I can't drive 55!)

  • In 2001, Hagar finally updated this to reflect new speed limits on American highways. He re-recorded it as "I Can't Drive 65" for the NASCAR album Full Throttle.
  • This was Hagar's biggest hit as a solo artist. He joined Van Halen a year after it was released.
  • This remains a classic rock radio standard, consistently garnering massive airplay.
  • The name of the album, VOA, stands for Voice of America.
  • This song is heard in the 1989 film Back To The Future II, starring Michael J. Fox. (thanks, Ricky - Los Angeles, CA)
  • One-time vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was pulled over in her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska on July 23, 2014, for speeding. She was reportedly going 63 mph in a 45 mph zone in her Toyota Tundra. This song was on the radio, at the time, which may well have contributed to her fast driving.

Hagar responded to the news by tweeting at her, saying "Dear @SarahPalinUSA heard you were #GoingRogue on the gas pedal! I'll cover your ticket if you promise to do better next time? #IcantDrive55†³
