Sixx: A.M.'s songs start in different ways. Sometimes vocalist James Michael will come up with a melody, or guitarist DJ Ashba and bassist Nikki Sixx will come up with a riff or chord pattern. DJ Ashba explained to Artist Direct : "Every song we've ever done just starts off with us literally picking up a couple of acoustics, strumming out some chords, and James will sing a beautiful melody. When we write songs from a musical standpoint, we get basic chord rhythms going, and we get the melody. The melody is the number one most important thing to all of us because we're all songwriters."

"Once we know we're locked into such a sick melody, then, almost the last thing I worry about when writing a song is the guitar parts," Ashba added. "No matter how awesome the guitars are, if you strip any song down, it usually boils down to three or four basic chords underneath the whole. And just a solid melody. We focus on the understructure of what makes a great song."

"The last thing I usually do when it comes to writing, once a song's in place, is add in all the cool riffs around the vocals," he continued. "It's super important for me to add to the song and not step on it. If the guitars call for it, you add a really ripping solo. All of those things are determined once the song is in place. Sometimes, a riff will inspire a song as in the case of 'Let's Go.' It's always different."

The lyric reflects Nikki Sixx' ongoing recovery from heroin addiction. He explained to Billboard magazine: "Lyrically it really ties back to the first two records. It's a song that kind of says, 'Hey, let's get up and get out of our own way. Let's go. Let's go through the darkness. We can make this. We can do this.'"

Gotta Get It Right Song Chart

This was released as the first single from Sixx: A.M.'s third album Modern Vintage. Guitarist DJ Ashba explained the record's title to Artist Direct : "Modern Vintage is very much what it is," he said. "It's all of our favorite bands that influenced us like Queen and those types of bands from the seventies. We're taking elements of the ragtime and disco stuff, sonically, and putting more of a modern production and modern twist on them."

"When we finished the album, the name came up because we were trying to describe what we had created with this album because we knew it was very special," Ashba continued. "Once the name came up, we knew there was no better name to describe this record."

Drummer Jeff Fabb (Black Label Society, In This Moment) joined vocalist James Michael, guitarist DJ Ashba and bassist Nikki Sixx on Modern Vintage. Ashba said the long player marked the first time Sixx: A.M. had used a live drummer on one of its discs, having previously relied solely on programmed drums while in the recording studio. "It was the first album where we actually felt it was important to capture that big album vibe we were going after," he explained. "To bring in a live drummer, it really made a huge difference, you know; it gave the whole entire album and songs a new breath of fresh air, which was really cool."

The origins of this song lie in a conversation the band had about '70s guilty pleasures. "I remember we were outside at my house, sitting in a circle on this patio with guitars," Nikki Sixx recalled to Billboard magazine. "Conversation came up like, 'Let's make a record that everybody might laugh at. Let's talk about that.' And we all started talking about pulling from all this music that people wouldn't expect."

"Nobody wants to say they listen to the Bee Gees or ABBA," he continued. "Nobody wants to say that in a rock band, but let's face it: That is stellar songwriting. That is so defined, and we like so much music, but we were talking about the '70s in that conversation and I had been listening to a lot of the Bee Gees, and the guys started talking about stuff they liked about that genre, which was kind of a disco genre, and two songs came out. One is a bonus track called 'So Beautiful, Let It Haunt You' and one's called 'Miracle.'"

"When 'Miracle' first started you could listen to the original ideas -- just guitar, a little tiny loop, James kind of singing this melody line on the bass," Sixx added. "This does not sound like something our fans are going to understand. But we kept pushing on the idea. The core idea was how great those songs were, and we started figuring out why they were great."
