Kingdom Lyrics

It's all black
Your Kingdom's turned me blank
I'm paper and I'm snow
I'm lost but I can't slow
I'm lost but not alone

It's so light, the dark it burns my eyes
My bones, they used to glow
But now I'm throwing stones
I'm losing where to go

Shadows on my back are moving slow
They twist behind like white leaves in the wind
And as I ride, these horses will say fly
Falling hard, falling high, through your arms
Shadows in my head don't need no light
They stay through the night

Without you, my lips are turning blue
The water pulls me down
And drowns under your sound
This silence booms so loud

I'm locked up, your kingdom's like a drug
The chains are made of glass
I'm breaking through your blood
I'm never strong enough

Shadows on my back are moving slow
They twist behind like white leaves in the wind
And as I ride, these horses will say fly
Falling hard, falling high, through your arms
Shadows in my head don't need no light
They stay through the night

To every rose a bloody thorn
It lift you up and lets you fall
To rivers flowing yond the factory halls
Your kingdom's come, it's waiting still
The space between you'll never fill
I tried but I could not change your mind

I dance around, and I lost you now
I breathed you out, I kept you out
But if I could, I'd turn back around

Kingdom Song Chart
  • This song was originally something Charli was working on with Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend. The two started writing it after seeing Miley Cyrus play the Staples Center and then getting drunk. "We went back to his house and I sat on top of [Batmanglij's] piano, and we wrote 'Kingdom,'" Charli told Pitchfork . "We sung it into his phone. I remember thinking in the morning, 'Ugh, this is going to be the worst thing ever,' but it was really good."

The tune remained as a drunken voice note on their phones until Hunger Games Mockinjay soundtrack curator Lorde called Charli up and asked her to lend a song to the movie. The English songstress figured out "Kingdom" would fit well.
  • Lorde asked asking Charli if she wanted to "put a legend on the song as well." Among her suggestions were Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon, who ended up supplying a brief vocal at the end of the track. "[Le Bon] cut his vocal in New York with Rostam, so we were never in the studio together," Charli told Radio.com . "But we had an email chain going, which was awesome. He sounds incredible, it's really cool to work with someone who's such a legend."

    Meltdown Lyrics

    Lorde meet King Push

Life is like a costume party
Just cover the floors in Cavalli
Let's hide the hurt in a molly
We're all tryna be somebody else
You can't hide your tears in wealth
When your heart knows you hate yourself
    It's all pain we felt
Just the way that the card's been dealt

Cover up all that is passed
Drop an olive in your glass
    Putting on a disguise
    It's an ocular vice
    Everyone on the run
Fifty feet all on the gas
Take him out, take him out
    Gonna take him out

We're the only theory they can't prove
And we don't have anything to lose

In my eyes, in my ears, bring might
Love is only figured once in life
Tell the crowd, search the town
Can we make it out right now
    It's a full meltdown

Try to break her spirit so it shouldn't be surprisin'
We're here with no fear and gave her uprising
Gonna blend in with the bullies and the bureaucrats
Arrows pierce like lightning, choppers sound like thunder clap
Never will you stand, we gon' lay you down
Dominant and dapper kids comin' in to take the town
Try to restrain us, even though you trained us
We're better than you are, now we're gonna make you feed us

Cover up all that is passed
Drop an olive in your glass
    Putting on a disguise
    It's an ocular vice
    Everyone on the run
Fifty feet all on the gas
Take him out, take him out
    Gonna take him out

    We're all lookin' for status
    Cristal sent over on gratis
    Can't pretend we're not plastic
When these poker faces take practice
Who to trust? Who to love?
Who to run from? Who to hug?
Set fire to a government of thugs
Respect only comes from the money or your blood

We're out of sight, shadows of light
They're closing in and I know where we're goin'
    But I don't know who I'll be

In my eyes, in my ears, bring might
Love is only figured once in life
Tell the crowd, search the town
Can we make it out right now
    It's a full meltdown

(I can hear, and see a ghost)
    Was it meant to be?
    (In my mind, I know)
    'Cause I can't see
    (And if you keep, [?])
    I can't see
    (I'm your undertow)

    Meltdown Song Chart
  • This is the opening track of the soundtrack to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1. The song is manned by Stromae. The Belgian singer-songwriter and producer first came to wide public attention with his song "Alors On Danse," which was one of the biggest hits of 2010 in continental Europe.
  • The song also features Lorde, the album's overall curator, holding down the hook. She's joined by Pusha T and Q-Tip, both of whom toss out quick-fire verses after the initial chorus. The Haim sisters also have a brief cameo at the end of the track.

Lorde told Fader: "Something like 'Meltdown' was pretty far outside my comfort zone. I contacted Stromae early on asking if he had anything, and he had this amazing instrumental from his record. I was, like, 'Oh my god, when I listened to your album the first thing I thought was that someone should do something over this awesome instrumental.' I thought, 'Wouldn't it be cool to get a bunch of rappers on it?' And once you say that, nothing can dissuade you. It ended up being one of my favorites on the album."
  • Asked by Fader if all the artists joined her in the studio, Lorde replied: "I wish. It was me and Haim. I'd been in the studio for 20 hours doing everything that needed to be finished, with me and my producer scarfing burgers."

"It was this big Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur, and Haim couldn't eat all day," she continued. "Before they came to the studio, we were like, 'Put everything away! Light a candle! No one can know this happened' When the girls showed up, we did awesome gang vocals for an hour. You feel so much cooler around them than you are. When they leave, I'm like, 'The light just got turned off and all of a sudden I'm a loser again.'"
  • Speaking about her curating of the soundtrack to Rolling Stone, Lorde said "Everyone my age read the books and saw the films. I got a call: 'You've been asked to write the end-credit song.' But I wanted ownership in the process. They came back: 'Would you like to do the soundtrack?' I was like, 'Uh, that would work.'"

Word to Gucci, that's my hitta
Your way is livin' in the moment, huh?
My way is livin' for tomorrow

Oh I know what I'm doin'
Yeah I know what I'm doin'
Say I know what I'm doin'
    I'm talkin' 'bout a revolution

There it is (Wait) ah ahh (Nah babe)
(Ah ahh) There it is (Wait) ah ahh (Nah babe)
    (Ah ahh) There it is

    Wait! All around the clock
Even when I'm under fire, preach
No never settle, I just stop 'em boy
But I ain't down to touch, I'm just out of reach

Oh I know what I'm doin'
Yeah I know what I'm doin' (ah ahh)
Say I know what I'm doin'
    I'm talkin' 'bout a revolution

There it is (Wait) ah ahh (Nah babe)
(Ah ahh) There it is (Wait) ah ahh (Nah babe)

(Ah ahh) No this is not a game (ah ahh) wait!

    Patience and determination
Starin' at a body of it
    Starin' at a gladiator
Victory is sweet and I'ma get it now and later

I know what I'm doin' (Patience and determination)
Yeah I know what I'm doin' (Starin' at a body of it)

What I gotta make it turn out, wait!

  • This track was manned by the British production duo, The Chemical Brothers. Most of the vocals are provided by R&B singer, Miguel, who surprisingly raps rather than croons the words. Lorde, the album's overall curator, also contributes to the chorus and sings the outro.
  • Asked by Fader whose idea it was for Miguel to rap on the track, Lorde replied: "There was this very early beat that the Chemical Brothers sent me. They sent me ten beats, and that was the one I kept coming back to."

"It had no melody, and I was trying to dream up this amazingly melodic person on this amazingly melody-less beat, and I thought of Miguel," she continued. "I said, 'Are you a fan of Chemical Brothers by any chance?' He was, and he was able to deliver in that style. I hadn't heard Miguel in that way, and I haven't heard Chemical Brothers in that way, so it was pretty cool for me."

"Someone called it 'playing god' earlier, which is a weird way of thinking about it, but it really felt limitless to me to sit in my bedroom on the tour bus and think up dream combinations of people who deserved to be in each other's presence," Lorde added, "people who I thought could learn from each other."
