  • The vocals to this song were added in 1982 and the song was remixed for Coda, an album of unreleased tracks. The song was originally an instrumental recorded in 1972 for the Houses Of The Holy sessions. (thanks, Chad - Reading, PA)
  • The song was based on a guitar lick Jimmy Page came up with during live versions of "Dazed And Confused." Bits and pieces of the instrumentals in this song came from "Dazed And Confused" and "The Crunge." Since Coda was part requiem for the late drummer John Bonham and part contractual obligation from Atlantic records, the song was thrown together from previously recorded tracks.
  • The late John Bonham's son, Jason Bonham, has grown up to fill in on drum duties during the occasional Zep revival.
  • Album cover art fans: Yes, that is the work of legendary album cover design studio Hipgnosis. Composed of artists Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, Hipgnosis distinguished themselves as master album cover artists, earning clients with the top bands of the '70s and '80s, including Pink Floyd, UFO, Genesis, Yes, The Scorpions, and five Led Zeppelin albums. Their iconic style, usually amazing photography that told a surreal story based on the lyrics, was abandoned here in favor of a stark font in plain colors, most likely by resident graphic designer George Hardie.

  • This track was written by Belle & Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch before the band's 1996's debut Tigermilk. Violinist Sarah Martin told NME: "We did it a few days after Lou Reed died. The song predates the band; it's a really old one. It came together really quickly and I guess we were in that Velvety frame of mind. I really love it."
  • Murdoch recalled to Drowned in Sound : "I stumbled over it a jotter from 1995 or so, and the tune came back to me immediately with every little twist and turn intact."

"I didn't have to change much, I added the last verse," he continued. "I remember the feeling of writing it, and that's the important thing. I thought we (the band) could still get it in recording."
  • Murdoch explained the track's meaning: "The song was from back in the day, when I often imagined wayward heroines in the same predicament that I was in," he said. "I used to imagine the kind of person that if I wished I could run into, round the next corner."

"The sentiment was based on a sermon that our then minister, John Christie, preached about simply getting through a dark night, and the hope of morning," Murdoch continued. "In this case he was talking about Easter Morning. I always used to leave the church a bit giddy, wondering for the rest of the day how all that stuff should be applied to the streets and tenements of my mouldy old town."

  • Recorded in 1978 at a studio in Sweden owned by Abba, this was intended for the Led Zeppelin album In Through the Out Door, but it didn't make the cut. It was released on Coda, an album of unreleased tracks put out after John Bonham's death.
  • The entire band's instrumentals come in right at the opening with Robert Plant's vocals starting in soon after. This was Zeppelin's typical style, a straightforward "get it done" 12-bar-blues attitude without very much pretension. It shows something of their character that they were consistent in doing this on one of the last songs done by the classic lineup.

Another telling sign of Zeppelin's character: How many drummers do most bands go through? Next to the bass, the drummer is usually the most-rotated spot. Not Zeppelin! Lose the drummer, and that's it, the band calls it quits - but to be fair, growing tensions within the band could have broken them up anyway.
  • A bit of rock history trivia: Led Zeppelin today is remembered as practically having walked on water. One easily forgets that back when these albums were coming out, while they had a huge fan base, rock critics panned them almost unanimously. Rolling Stone raspberried every single Zep album.

  • Big K.R.I.T.'s real-life girlfriend Mara Hruby croons the hook on this sing-songy love story. The Mississippi MC told The Boombox : "I originally had the song written before I even decided to have her featured on it. It was one of those things where listening to it, I knew it would be better fit for a female's voice. Why not feature Mara Hruby because I love her voice and I love the soulfulness in her voice. At the same time, it's still aesthetically a little different from what people are used to hearing from me."

"It was easy because, you know, that is my girl so it wasn't as stressful trying to reach out and sending it back and forth with another artist," he continued. "She was in the studio with me and we knocked it out. We went over it together to make it sonically vibe. It was dope to be able to feature her on the album."

  • This was influenced by American rockabilly music, which Robert Plant enjoyed. A hot dog is distinctly American cuisine.
  • Led Zeppelin had some heavy songs, but this was a fun, rollicking tune at a tough time for the band. Plant's 5-year-old son, Karac, died in 1977 and they were all worn out from constant touring and recording.
  • The lyrics about a girl in Texas who "Took my heart" may have been based on a real woman in Plant's life, but he called this a tribute to Texas and the state of mind of the people in Texas.
  • A promotional video was shot. This was the closest Led Zeppelin came to a music video.
  • Led Zeppelin played this live throughout their 1979 and 1980 tours, placed rather awkwardly between "Ten Years Gone" and "The Rain Song." (thanks, Chris - Whitesboro, NY)
  • On a particularly cold day at a turn of the 20th century New York baseball game, no one was buying concessionaire Harry Stevens' ice cream, so he begun selling sausages and rolls. He started calling out, "Red hot dachshund sausages!" and found they were very popular. Thomas "Tad" Dorgan, a sports cartoonist for The New York Journal, was in the press box and seeing this he attempted to draw a cartoon of a barking sausage steaming in its stretched out roll. He didn't know how to spell "Dachshund," so he wrote "hot dog" instead, a name which immediately caught on. Stonemilker Lyrics

    A juxtaposition in fate
    Find our mutual coordinates

Moments of clarity are so rare
    I better document this
    Across the view is fears
    All that matters is

    Who is open-chested
    And who has coagulated
    Who can share and
Who has shot down the chances?

Show me emotional respect, oh respect, oh respect
And I have emotional needs, oh needs, oh ooh
I wish to synchronize our feelings, our feelings, oh ooh

What is it that I have
That makes me feel your pain
    Like milking a stone
To get you to say it and

    Who is open?
    And who has shut up
    And if one feels closed
    How does one stay open?

We have emotional needs, oh needs, oh needs, oh ooh
I only wish to synchronize our feelings, our feelings, ooh
I'll show some emotional respect, oh respect, oh ooh

    A juxtaposition in fate
    Find our mutual coordinates

  • This is the opening track of Vulnicura, which was originally scheduled to be dropped in March 2015, but was released on iTunes two months early following an internet leak.
  • Vulnicura reflects on Bjork's 2013 breakup with the artist and filmmaker Matthew Barney, with whom she had a daughter, Isadora, in 2002. The lyrics booklet that accompanies the album on iTunes creates a rough timeline of the split. This song is annotated as "9 months before."
  • Speaking to Pitchfork , Bjork said that the separation from Barney was "the most painful thing" she had ever experienced. "When I did this album it all just collapsed. I didn't have anything," she commented. "It was the most painful thing I ever experienced in my life. The only way I could deal with that was to start writing for strings; I decided to become a violin nerd and arrange everything for 15 strings and take a step further than what I've done before."

Bjork went on to say that the subject of the breakup was difficult to open up about, but that the album's lyrics tell the full story. "It's really hard for me to talk about it," she said. "It really is in the lyrics. I've never really done lyrics like this, because they're so teenage, so simple. I wrote them really quickly. But I also spent a long time on them to get them just right. It's so hard to talk about the subject matter; it's impossible — I'm sorry. There's so many songs about [heartbreak] that exist this in the world, because music is somehow the perfect medium to express something like this."
  • The song's music video is a virtual reality film shot on a 360 camera by Andrew Thomas Huang. Frequent Björk collaborator Huang won Best New Director at the 2013 UK Music Video Awards for his work on the Icelandic singer's clip for "Mutual Core."

The video was shot on a beach in Grotta, Reykjavik, where the song was written. Björk explained: "We discussed [the 360 camera's] potential for intimacy and Andrew then suggested we take it to the beach where the song was written. It immediately rang true for me as that location has a beautiful 360 panoramic view which matches the cyclical fugue like movement in the song. If the song has a shape it is sort of like a circle that just goes on forever."

"I had recorded the strings with a clip on mike on each instrument," she added. "We have made a different mix where we have fanned this in an intimate circle around the listener. So as you watch this in the virtual reality headset it will be as if you are on that beach and with the 30 players sitting in a circle tightly around you."
  • Björk discussed the writing of the song's lyrics during a Song Exploder podcast. "I was walking on a beach and I was walking back and forth and the lyrics came along without me really editing them," she recalled. "The strength of this album is really simplicity and the thinking out loud feeling. And I shouldn't be too clever. It would work against it. So, I kind of just went with the first words that came. [They're] probably the most obvious lyrics I've ever written."

Moving onto the song's meaning, Bjork said: "It's about someone who's trying to get emotions out of another person. The whole song is emotionally about wanting clarity, wanting simplicity, and talking to someone who wants things to be really complex and foggy and unclear. And you saying, ok, I've got clarity: want it or not? So, it's sort of celebrating simplicity and clarity."

  • This was the last song on the last album before drummer John Bonham's death. Zeppelin bass player John Paul Jones wrote most of it. The song is likely a tribute to Robert Plant's son, Karac, who had died of a viral stomach infection at the age of five in 1977. This was also why their '77 tour was cut short.
  • Soul singer Wilson Pickett's music was the inspiration for this.
  • This is the final track from Led Zeppelin's eighth album In Through the Out Door, so named because after taking a voluntary exile from Great Britain for two years (for financial reasons), they found that getting back into the spotlight in England proved to more difficult than they thought.
  • This was the last song on the last album that drummer John Bonham played on before his death in 1980.

I wake you up in the middle of the night
To express my love for you
Stroke your skin and feel you
Naked I can feel all of you
    At the same moment

I wake you up in the night
Feeling this is our last time together
    Therefore sensing all the moments
    We've been together
Being here at the same time
Every single touch we ever touch each other
Every single fuck we had together
Is in a wondrous time lapse
With us here here at this moment
    The History of Touches
    Every single archive
    Compressed into a second
All with us here as I wake you up

  • The Vulnicura album outlines the dissolution of Björk's relationship with her longtime partner, the artist Matthew Barney. This last-chance love song finds her lying awake in bed, recalling all the intimate moments when the couple were touching one another.
  • The watery synthesizer chords were programmed by Venezuelan producer Arca, (aka Alejandro Ghersi, who previously worked with Kanye West and FKA Twigs). He helmed six of the album's nine tracks. Bjork told French magazine Les Inrocks that her collaboration with Arca was a result of the producer getting in contact with her in 2013. "It was a year and a half ago. At the time I had never listened to his work with FKA Twigs or Kanye West. But I enjoyed it immediately. He came to see me in Iceland. After that, it was very quick – we didn't stop working on the album," she said.
  • Arca was born in 1990 making him 25 years younger than Björk. When asked whether it was important for her to work with someone very young, she responded: "No, age is just a detail. When we met, it was a simple meeting of two music nerds. We swapped playlists, talked a lot. There was a connection."

  • The title is spelled wrong. It was supposed to be "Suarez," Spanish for party.
  • John Paul Jones did much of the work writing this. It is centered around his piano.
  • Jimmy Page made a few minor guitar mistakes, but he left them in. He always preferred a spontaneous feel over a perfect take.
  • One of the few Zeppelin songs Jimmy Page had no part in writing. It is credited to Jones and Robert Plant. At the time, Page and drummer John Bonham were spending a lot of time together and were rarely at the studio when Plant and Jones started working on songs for In Through The Out Door. Bonham died in 1980 after a drinking binge at Page's house.

    Family Lyrics

    Is there a place
    Where I can pay respects
For the death of my Family
    Show some respect
    Between the three of us
There is the mother and the child
Then there is the father and the child
But no man and a woman
    No triangle of love

    So where do I go
    To make an offering
    I fall on my knees
    Lay my flowers
    Burn incense
    Light the candles

    So where do I go
    To make an offering
    To mourn our miraculous
    Triangle
    Father mother child
    Father mother child

    How will I sing us
    Out of this sorrow
    Build a safe bridge
For the child out of this danger

I raise a monument of love
There is a swarm of sound
    Around our heads
    And we can hear it
And we can get healed by it
It will relieve us from the pain
It will make us a part of
    This universe of solutions
    This place of solutions

  • This is a track from Vulnicura, which Björk calls "a complete heartbreak album." It reflects her break up with the artist and filmmaker Matthew Barney, with whom she had a daughter, Isadora, in 2002.
  • British musician Bobby Krlic, known by his stage name The Haxan Cloak, was one of two major collaborators for the album, along with Venezuelan producer Arca. He provided mixing as well as additional production for this track.

Bjork told Pitchfork : "Usually I do half of the beats and then I will get someone like Matthew Herbert to help me with the chorus of the song, or another guy to help me do other bits. But this time around, maybe because it's a relationship album about the duality between you and that person, doing a whole album with just one person made perfect sense. Towards the end, we needed someone to mix it, so the only other person who came into it was a guy called Haxan Cloak. Literally, just the three of us. Really simple. That's been really fun."
  • Krlic's name Haxan Cloak derives from the Swedish for "haxan," meaning "witch."
  • Vulnicura is an invented word melding "vulnerability" with "cure." Bjork told Uncut magazine she hadn't planned on writing a breakup album: "I guess I found in my lap one year into writing it a complete heartbreak album," she said. "I was kind of surprised how thoroughly I had documented this in pretty much accurate emotional chronology - like three songs before a break up and three after. So the anthropologist in me sneaked in and decided to share them as such."

  • This song is about a guy who is supposed to meet a woman on a certain corner. When the woman doesn't show up, he thinks he's been stood up. It turns out he was just standing on the WRONG corner, and is now a "fool in the rain." (thanks, Joe - Long Island, NY)
  • Jimmy Page got the idea for the Samba beat from watching the World Cup soccer tournament in 1978. Argentina was the host country, and he heard a lot of Samba rhythms while watching.
  • This was the last Led Zeppelin song to chart in the US. The group didn't release many singles, but they pegged this one for popular appeal. Zeppelin retired with six Top 40 hits in America.
  • This song was never performed live because the group didn't think the sound came off well. The piano was quite necessary in the song, but with John Paul Jones on piano there could be no bass, and the bass is very important in this one. There is also a twelve-string line at one point in the song and the guitar solo that has to be pulled off. The middle section was another issue.
  • Jimmy Page used regular distortion on this song, as well as an obscure effect called a called a blue box, which is a fuzz/octave pedal. This fuzzes (or distorts) the guitar, then drops it down two whole octaves. James Taylor's bassist has used this effect. (thanks, John - Boca Raton, FL, for above 2)
  • Mexican rockers Mana recorded this for the Spanish language market edition of the Tribute album Encomium. It's the only officially-released Led Zeppelin cover song in Spanish (thanks, Sergio - San Diego, CA).

    We are each other’s hemispheres

I am fine tuning my soul
    To the universal wavelength
No one is a lover alone
    I propose an Atom Dance
Our hearts are coral reefs in low tide
Love is the ocean we crave
    Restlessly turning around and around
    I am dancing towards transformation
Learning by love to open it all
    Let this ugly wound relief
    We fear unconditional heart space
    Healed by atom dance

When you feel the flow as primal love
Enter the pain and dance with me!
    We are each other’s hemispheres

We aim at peeling off dead layers of loveless love
No one is a lover alone
Most hearts fear their own home
    Come in themselves fully
    It scares them all

When you feel the flow as primal love
Enter the pain and dance with me!

No one is a lover alone, no one
Most hearts fear their own home

You are my same hemisphere, hemisphere
    The atoms are dancing, dancing

No one is a lover alone, no
Most hearts fear their own home

You are my same hemisphere, hemisphere
    The atoms are dancing, dancing

    Atoms are laughing at last

  • Vulnicura describes Björk's heartbreak over the ending of her long-term relationship with the artist Matthew Barney. Written in a 5/4 time signature, this song finds the storm clouds begin to lift, as she begins the healing process.
  • The song features guest vocals by Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons. The New York singer and Björk are frequent collaborators: the pair duetted on the Antony and the Johnsons number "Flétta" and Hegarty also provided vocals to two tracks on Bjork's Volta album, "The Dull Flame of Desire" and "My Juvenile."
  • This one of several tracks on Vulnicura that was produced by Venezuelan producer Arca, (aka Alejandro Ghersi, who previously worked with Kanye West and FKA Twigs). He told Fader how he came to work with the Icelandic artist. "A while ago, [Björk's manager] reached out to me, and very respectfully and gracefully expressed that she liked [2013 mixtape] &&&&&—in a very pure [way] and without any expectation," Arca explained. "I couldn't have ever expected that, I was so happy."

"We wrote back and forth a few times, and she finished her tour here in London and asked me if I knew anyone who could DJ for a casual after-party," he continued. "I volunteered, of course, and this weird electric thing happened. I felt so comfortable around her, and it developed from there. We met up one time to see if there was some kind of possible chemistry [between us] and sure enough, there was. I've learned a lot from every musical collaboration I've ever had, but there's something about my relationship with Björk that is special to me."
