Gush Lyrics

Gush, gush, gush,
Tell me when, gush
Make the pussy just gush
Make the pussy just gush
Make the pussy just gush
Make it, just gush
Make it, just gush
I make the pussy just gush
I make it, just gush

I'm imagining things
Do you wanna try?
Take off your halo and wings
Girl, I can make her fly

I don't know, what's come over me
My momma didn't raise me that way
You lit a fire, from inside of me
That'd light your seat ablaze, girl
Light that ass on fire

I could be the guy to treat you
To a nice movie, feed you
But I don't wanna mislead you
Tonight I think I wanna be dirty, girl
Do you wanna get dirty, girl? Come on
Light that ass on fire
Do you wanna get dirty, girl? C'mon let's go

Girl the world's watchin'
From sunset to midnight
They're tryna catch a glimpse (intimacy)
Of you and I

I don't know, I don' know what's come over me
My momma didn't raise me that way
You lit a fire, from inside of me
That'll light your seat ablaze, girl
Ha I light that ass on fire

I could be the guy to treat you
To a nice movie, feed you
But I don't wanna mislead you
Tonight I think I wanna be dirty, girl
Do you wanna get dirty, girl? Come on
Light that ass on fire
Do you wanna get dirty, girl? C'mon let's go

I don't know, what's come over me
My momma didn't raise me that way
You lit a fire, from inside of me
That'd leave those panties in flames, girl
I light that ass on fire

I could be the guy to treat you
To a nice movie, feed you
But I don't wanna mislead you
Tonight I think I wanna be dirty, girl
Do you wanna get dirty, girl? Come on
Light that ass on fire
Do you wanna get dirty, girl? C'mon let's go
Do you wanna get dirty, girl? Come on
Light that ass on fire
Do you wanna get dirty, girl? C'mon let's go
Do you wanna get dirty, girl? Come on
Light that ass on fire
Do you wanna get dirty, girl? C'mon let's go

  • G I R L's most explicit sex jam, this disconcertingly titled song (pronounced "goosh") finds Pharrell threatening a paramour to "leave those panties in flames." There are times where I get a little bit cute," Skateboard P had warned before he started playing the album at the listening party. "But I should be allowed to do that."
  • The song's hook of "Light that ass on fire," is a repeat of Pharrell's line on his 2003 Busta Rhymes collaboration "Light Ya Ass on Fire."

    Mayonaise Lyrics

Fool enough to almost be it
Cool enough to not quite see it
    Doomed
Pick your pockets full of sorrow
And run away with me tomorrow
    June

We'll try and ease the pain
But somehow we'll feel the same
    Well, no one knows
    Where our secrets go

I send a heart to all my dearies
When your life is so, so dreary
    Dream
I'm rumored to the straight and narrow
While the harlots of my perils
    Scream

    And I fail
But when I can, I will
    Try to understand
That when I can, I will

Mother weep the years I'm missing
All our time can't be given
    Back
Shut my mouth and strike the demons
That cursed you and your reasons
Out of hand and out of season
Out of love and out of feeling
    So bad

    When I can, I will
    Words defy the plan
    When I can, I will

Fool enough to almost be it
And cool enough to not quite see it
And old enough to always feel this
Always old, I'll always feel this

No more promise no more sorrow
    No longer will I follow
    Can anybody hear me
I just want to be me
    When I can, I will
    Try to understand
That when I can, I will

    Mayonaise
  • Billy Corgan got the title for this song after looking in his refrigerator. Corgan had many interesting names for songs. He said this about coming up with titles: "Say you write a song about a chandelier, and the chandelier gives off light. And the light is the color red and red reminds you of the color your not supposed to wear around a bull. So you name the song 'Cow.'"
  • The title is not the correct way to spell "Mayonnaise." Corgan also used alternate spellings with the song "Galapogos" (Galapagos) and the album Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness (Melancholy). (thanks, Cam - St. Catharines, Canada, for above 2)
  • According to Billy Corgan, when he wrote the lyric he just "threw together a bunch of weird one liners." He says that while the song doesn't have any continuity, it later made some sense to him, as he could see that it reflected what he was going through at the time.
  • In 1756 a sauce made from olive oil and egg yolks was invented by the French chef of Louis François Armand de Vignerot du Plessis, duc de Richelieu. While the Duke was defeating the British at the successful siege of the English-held St. Philip's Castle, his chef was creating a victory feast that included a sauce made of cream and eggs. When the chef realized that there was no cream in the kitchen, he improvised, substituting olive oil for the cream. Located in Mahón, port city and the capital of Minorca, the successful siege had resulted in the French's gain of the entire island. The chef named the new sauce "Mahonnaise", (or mayonnaise) in honor of the Duke's victory. (From the book Food for Thought: Extraordinary Little Chronicles of the World by Ed Pearce)
  • The distinctive guitar sound came about in a very lo-tech fashion. Corgan explained: "The origin of the squealing high note was, I bought this guitar for $65, and it was such a cheap guitar that every time I'd stop playing it would make that whistle. So when we wrote the song, we wrote in these parts that would stop so the whistle became part of the song because every time I would stop it would whistle."

    Gust of Wind Lyrics

My heart is filled, with love and care
Not an ounce of gas, I would get up there
    The answer's simple
    You lift me up
The view up here, I see all the stars
There go Venus, and there go Mars
    Somethin' you been through
    You're from above

Hey, when I first saw you, I got excited
Tried to keep my composure, tryna hide it
    But I didn't know
    I didn't let go
Then it occurred to me while tryna fight it
Just like a kite, you learn to ride it
    But I didn't know
You're s'posed to let it go

    Like a Gust of Wind
    You hit me off sometimes
    Like a gust of wind
You push me back every once in a while
    Like a gust of wind
You remind me there's someone up there
    Who whooshes in
The air I need to power myself

    When I open the window
    I wanna hug you
'Cause you remind me of the air
    I said yeah
'Cause when I'm feelin' real low
    I remember I love you
I put my hands in the air
    And you were there

With your love, I can board the skies
Finding a way that electrifies, mother's your other
    Cannot stow away
Telephone winds of the northern sky
Is the closest thing, and here is why
    'Cause we're color
    You blow me away

I need you, like I'm breathing
Music umbrellas can make one cover
Who cares if they don't see you?
Don't you know that they're the same?
I need it like I'm breathing
If you never discover, forever you'll suffer
Who cares if they don't see you?
You got until then to learn the way

    Like a gust of wind
    You hit me off sometimes
    Like a gust of wind
You push me back every once in a while
    Like a gust of wind
You remind me there's someone up there

    Gust of Wind
  • This song finds Pharrell in love with a lady who lifts him up mentally and emotionally like a force of nature. It features a vocal contribution from Daft Punk – the Robots previously recruited Pharrell to appear on their 2013 Random Access Memories album.
  • The song was inspired by Pharrell's wife, model and designer Helen Lasichanh. He explained to The Sun: "That song came to me in a dream. It's the only time it has ever happened to me in my life."

Pharrell continued: "I woke up and sang them to my girl and said: 'Babe, this is about you. It's about the divine force you have which could be compared to a gust of wind.' I told her: 'Like a gust of wind, you remind me there's someone out there who ushers in the air as I need to power in myself."

"And my wife was overjoyed when she first heard that song," he added. "She was also a little teary-eyed but then we have the Robots on there. It was like, 'Wow! Those guys are like, the next level."
  • This is Pharrell's "personal favorite" song on G I R L, and during the album's listening party he played it twice, excitedly jumping back to the start at the part where Hans Zimmer's string arrangement kicks in.
  • The offbeat electric guitar was played by 17-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter Francesco Yates, who is signed to Atlantic Records.
  • Pharrell takes the opportunity to rep his i am OTHER YouTube channel and cultural movement when he sings on the second verse: "Mothership Other cannot go away."
  • The song was mixed by former Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones collaborator Nathan "Mick" Guzauski. He was also the recording engineer for Random Access Memories.
  • Directed by British filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), the music video finds Pharrell walking through an autumnal forest in his trademark hat accompanied by some girls demonstrating their ribbon dancing skills. Daft Punk don't appear in the clip, however the French duo's famous helmets feature as ancient stone statues, which fly and glow during their chorus.

No More Mr. Nice Guy Lyrics

I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing
'Til they got a hold of me.
I opened doors for little old ladies,
I helped the blind to see.
I got no friends 'cause they read the papers.
They can't be seen with me and I'm gettin' real shot down
    And I'm feeling mean.

    No more Mister Nice Guy,
    No more Mister Clean,
    No more Mister Nice Guy,
They say he's sick, he's obscene.

I got no friends 'cause they read the papers.
They can't be seen with me and I'm gettin' real shot down
    And I'm feeling mean.

    No more Mister Nice Guy,
    No more Mister Clean,
    No more Mister Nice Guy,
They say he's sick, he's obscene.

My dog bit me on the leg today.
    My cat clawed my eyes.
Ma's been thrown out of the social circle,
    And dad has to hide.
    I went to church incognito.
When everybody rose, the Reverend Smith,
    He recognized me,
And punched me in the nose.
    No more Mister Nice Guy,
    No more Mister Clean,
    No more Mister Nice Guy,
They say he's sick, he's obscene.

    No More Mr. Nice Guy
  • Cooper wrote this song about the reaction of friends and family toward his over-the-top stage persona. The maniac he plays on stage goes over well with his audiences, but the folks in his mother's church groups were unsure how to handle it and were uncomfortable talking about it. This song was the shock rocker's declaration that the "gloves are off," and he's no longer going to apologize for his wild-man stage antics, as there are many worse things that he could be doing with his life.

The upbeat pop-rock anthem boasts an irresistible sing-along chorus that helped its chart fortunes.
  • Cooper co-wrote this song with Michael Bruce, who was a member of the original Alice Cooper Group. Bruce played guitar, keyboards and contributed vocals as a band member. He was also the group's chief songwriter and wrote or co-wrote many of their most-recognized songs, including "School's Out," "Under My Wheels," "I'm Eighteen," "Ballad of Dwight Fry," "Be My Lover," "Desperado" and "Billion Dollar Babies."
  • The lineup on this track was Cooper (vocals), Glen Buxton (lead guitar), Michael Bruce (rhythm guitar), Dennis Dunaway (bass) and Neal Smith (drums). In our interview with Smith , he explained that this song came at a time when the band was burnishing their Shock Rock for greater appeal. "'No More Mr. Nice Guy' is a good combination between the dark side and the commercial side," he said.
  • This was the third single from Billion Dollar Babies, the sixth studio album by Alice Cooper (the name of both the singer and the band at the time). This was the band's most commercially successful album. It topped the album charts in both the United States and the UK, and also made the Top 10 in Australia, Austria and Canada.

The album was produced by Bob Ezrin, who has produced many albums for Cooper - both the Alice Cooper band and his solo LPs. With this album, Ezrin aimed for a more polished sound, but the tracks still have Cooper's signature Hard Rock flavor. Ezrin was one of the most commercially successful and acclaimed producers of the 1970s. Highlights in his career include his production work for Pink Floyd's groundbreaking album The Wall and KISS's multi-platinum Destroyer. Other notable albums he's produced for Cooper include Welcome to My Nightmare, School's Out, Love It To Death and Lace and Whiskey. Cooper has described Ezrin as "our George Martin."
  • Pat Boone pulled off an ironic cover of this song for his album In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy, released in 1997. The Thrash Metal band Megadeth recorded a more sincere version for the 1989 horror film Shocker, which was later included on the band's EP Hidden Treasures in 1995.
  • This was featured in the 1993 movie Dazed and Confused during a scene where the school seniors (one of which was played by Ben Affleck) paddle a freshman per tradition. It was an appropriate choice, as the movie was set in 1976. When this scene was spoofed in the 2005 Family Guy episode "Jungle Love," the song was also used. The song also appears in the 2011 episode of The Simpsons titled "Love Is a Many Strangled Thing."
  • In 2010, Cooper rerecorded the song for the popular video game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.
  • Dave Mustaine, the frontman for Megadeth, became Alice Cooper's godson after Cooper became his mentor. When the video for Megadeth's version of this song was being shot in 1989, director Penelope Spheeris remembered Mustaine being so messed up on drugs he could not do the vocals and guitar playing at the same time, so the parts had to be recorded separately. It acts as an interlude track, with the sound of crashing waves morphing into bubbling synths, before Pharrell intones some pseudo-spiritual lyrics. Skateboard P said at the album's listening party that the song has a "meditative vibe."

Mama she has taught me well
Told me when I was young
"Son your life's an open book
Don't close it 'fore its done"

    "The brightest flame burns quickest"
That's what I heard her say
    A son's heart's owed to mother
But I must find my way

    Let my heart go
    Let your son grow
    Mama, let my heart go
Or let this heart be still
    Yeah, still

    Rebel, my new last name
    Wild blood in my veins
    Apron strings around my neck

    The mark that still remains
Left home at an early age
Of what I heard was wrong
    I never asked forgiveness
But what is said is done

    Let my heart go
    Let your son grow
    Mama, let my heart go
Or let this heart be still

    Never I ask of you
    But never I gave
But you gave me your emptiness that I'll take to my grave
    Never I ask of you
    But never I gave
But you gave me your emptiness that I'll take to my grave
So let this heart be still

    Mama, now I'm coming home
I'm not all you wished of me
A mother's love for her son
    Unspoken, and maybe
Yeah, I took your love for granted
And all the things you said to me
I need your arms to welcome me
    But, a cold stone's all I see

    Let my heart go
    Let your son grow
    Mama, let my heart go
Or let this heart be still
    Let my heart go
    Mama, let my heart go

You never let my heart go
So let this heart be still

    Never I ask of you
    But never I gave
But you gave me your emptiness that I'll take to my grave
    Never I ask of you
    But never I gave

    Mama Said
  • This is a song for James Hetfield's mother, who died of cancer when he was young. The song talks about his regrets of not being able to spend more time with her and how he hopes that she will still love him when he sees her again ("Mama now I'm coming home. I'm not all you wished of me. A mother's love for her son unspoken, help me be. Yeah I took your love for granted and all the things you said to me. I need your arms to welcome me. But a cold stone is all I see.") (thanks, Josh - El Paso, TX)
  • In an interview with Mojo magazine December 2008, Hetfield referred to this song about his mother as, "like a prodigal son song: leaving and then coming back and it's too late, you can't talk to her now." He added: "It was a realization that lots of questions went unanswered. 'I want to say this. I want to ask you this.' And you're unable to. But through therapy I was able to do a lot of grief work, about both parents."

Oh come on, come on, give me what I came for
I got treasure to hide, so let's keep it from the strangers, hey

When you bite on my lip
And hold my hand, and moan again, I'ma hold that ass
When you kiss on my lips
And hold my hand, and moan again, I'ma hold that ass

You don't know, I've been missin' you

    It Girl
  • Pharrell closes G I R L with this ode to the love of his life. He had been in a relationship with model/designer Helen Lasichanh for several years and they married in Miami on October 12, 2013.
  • G I R L is a tribute to ladies - physically and emotionally. The Neptunes producer's only previous solo album, 2006's In My Mind, received generally mixed reviews and had a disappointing commercial performance. Williams told GQ magazine how he got a call from Daft Punk's label, Columbia in Spring 2013. "And they're like, Look, we know that you're not interested in doing another solo album," he recalled. "But we know that you're going to change your mind. Even if you're not ready now, we know you're going to change your mind. And since we know that, we'd like to get ahead of it and change your mind and tell you, 'Look, here's a deal. Go make whatever album you want to make.'"

Pharrell took some convincing, but once he'd signed, he already knew what the album would be. "I instantly knew that the name of the album was called G I R L," he said, "and the reason why is because women and girls, for the most part, have just been so loyal to me and supported me."
  • The song finishes on a long instrumental fade with distorted guitar riffs, warping strings and chiming percussion behind which Pharrell repeats the word 'girl.' He explained at the listening party that it's a song written with live shows in mind, hence the funky breakdown.
  • The colorful animated video channels both Japanese anime and 64-bit video game styles as we see a cartoon version of Pharrell wearing his recognisable Vivienne Westwood hat.

Williams created the clip with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. The pair previously worked together in 2009, when they collaborated on a sculpture that allegedly sold for $2 million. The Neptunes producer also remixed the theme song to Murakami's film Jellyfish Eyes five years later.

    These Are The Times Lyrics

    These Are The Times
  • James Young: "These Are the Times is really an intervention song and what the lyrics are have kind of evolved - what they are at this stage and what they were when Tommy and I first wrote it. When we first started working on it was seven years ago, it was more about, Tommy was heavily involved, and still is, with drug interventions, and very supportive of a lot of groups that do work in that field and I've been through a number of those, notably with our dearly departed first drummer John Panozzo. The song was about intervening in someone's life, kind of in a way that Chuck (Panozzo), who is now openly a gay man who has come out and announced that he's HIV-positive and his struggles with this - it's about supporting him. Ultimately, what the lyrics finally evolved into, in a way, was the passing of my younger brother from a lymphoma and when we had to take him off life support. When we were in his room, everyone was around crying and it was very emotional and from the next room comes the sound of Jimi Hendrix' 'Purple Haze.' This is in the intensive care unit and I said, 'This is my brother speaking to me, speaking to us.' And it lightened the mood. 'I hear voices from beyond the veil,' it sort of inspired that line, Tommy and I collaborated on that. So that song has kind of become about helping those, that there is something to live for, for those that think there isn't." (thanks, Jayme - Stockbridge, MI)

I been there, gettin stroke and nothing to trap-uh
John could do, when surrounded with true
A man dies, baby born, as far as Peru
It's a simple proof between us and imposters
We hop in the air, and don't care what it costs us
Now I'm with NERD with a pit full of Martians
I guess you could say that we fly like saucers

    How Does It Feel?
  • Pharrell Williams was riding high as a producer in the mid 2000s, providing hit singles for the likes of Gwen Stefani, Ludacris, and Beyoncé. However, his debut solo album, a braggadocious rap record titled In My Mind, was a commercial disappointment. Reflecting back on this track during a 2014 interview with GQ magazine, Williams admitted his life at the time was without purpose. "That wasn't joy," he said. "That was just bragging. I wanted to be like Jay. I wanted to be like Puff. Those are their paths. I got my own path. But I didn't know what my path was. I knew that I was meant to do something different. I knew that I needed to inject purpose in my music. And I thought that was my path. I didn't realize that like, from '08 up until now was like, training. Like, keep putting purpose in everything you do. Don't worry about it; just put purpose in there."

    Jessie's Girl Lyrics

    Jessie is a friend,
Yeah I know he's been a good friend of mine
    But lately something's changed
    It ain't hard to define
    Jessie's got himself a girl
And I want to make her mine
And she's watching him with those eyes
And she's lovin' him with that body, I just know it
And he's holding her in his arms late, late at night

You know I wish that I had Jessie's Girl
    I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Why can't I find a woman like that

I'll play along with this charade
That doesn't seem to be a reason to change
You know I feel so dirty when they start talking cute
I want to tell her that I love but the point is probably moot
'Cause she's watching him with those eyes
And she's lovin' him with that body, I just know it
And he's holding her in his arms late, late at night

You know I wish that I had Jessie's girl
    I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Why can't I find a woman like that?

    Like Jessie's girl
    I wish that I had Jessie's girl
    Why can't I find a woman
Why can't I find a woman like that

And I'm lookin' in the mirror all the time
Wonderin' what she don't see in me
I've been funny; I've been cool with the lines
Ain't that the way love's supposed to be
Tell me why can't I find a woman like that

You know I wish that I had Jessie's girl
    I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Why can't I find a woman like that?
    Like Jessie's girl

    I wish that I had Jessie's girl
    I want, I want Jessie's girl

    Jessie's Girl
  • Who is Jessie's girl? We may never know, but in our interview with Rick Springfield , he told us the story. Said Rick: "I don't know her name. It was a brief relationship I had when I was making stained glass for a while. I was going to a stained glass class in Pasadena, and I met this guy and his girlfriend. I was completely turned on to his girlfriend, but she was just not interested. So I had a lot of sexual angst, and I went home and wrote a song about it. Then about 4 months later I stopped going to the class and lost contact with them. The only thing I remember is his name was Gary, so I changed the name, because 'Gary' didn't sing very well. But the whole thing is absolutely what I was feeling. He was getting it and I wasn't, and it was really tearing me up. And sexual angst is an amazing motivator to write a song. Actually, Oprah's people tried to find her, and they got as far back as finding the stained glass guy. I couldn't remember his name, but I said it was late '70s; they found him, and he had died 2 years earlier, and they'd thrown all his papers out a year after that. So we missed finding out who she was by a year."
  • This was Springfield's second Top 20 hit (the first being "Speak To The Sky" in 1971) and it was his only #1, where it stayed for two weeks in August, 1981. The popularity of the song and album that summer was bolstered by the fact that Springfield, also an actor, had landed the role of Dr. Noah Drake on the soap opera General Hospital earlier that spring. Springfield began acting in the mid-'70s when his music career had stalled and his then-girlfriend, actress Linda Blair, suggested he try it.

Speaking of Linda Blair, when Springfield and Blair were dating, Blair was just 15 years old while Springfield was 25. They only lived together for one year, and according to an interview on VH1's Behind the Music, Blair said, "He's someone I'll always love" while Springfield says that of all his former girlfriends, Blair is the only one he remains friends with. Remember that this was 1974, when standards were a little more relaxed, and median age of consent for most of Springfield's native country of Australia is 16. (thanks, Dawn - Highlands Ranch, CO)
  • Spingfield's take on relationships: "We’re clueless. Desperately clueless. Everybody is on relationships. Truly, I remember being a jerk because I thought that’s what girls wanted. You only really learn about women when you get into a long relationship, unless you got a really great dad – a really clued-in father – or a really open mom."
  • This was the #1 song in the United States when MTV launched on August 1, 1981. The video became a favorite on the fledgling network, as the photogenic Springfield starred in a well-produced promo where he used his acting skills to portray his angst.

Springfield says it's his only video where he took creative control, storyboarding it himself. The scene where he smashes the mirror remains an iconic clip; it was the most expensive part of the video, since Rick estimates that went through 24 mirrors.
  • In the category of weird covers, this song was covered by The Chipmunks, using the same instrumental backing track, no less. Check out their 1982 album Chipmunk Rock if you just have to have it.
  • This song was used in the movie 13 Going On 30 starring Jennifer Garner. (thanks, Julian - Anaheim, CA)

    Sanctified Lyrics

There's a few million angels movin' around me
I just worship thee, for all he's done for me
It's a new day, I have been born again
I've been born again, I've been born again
In His spirit, and His name
    I'm Sanctified!
    Lord I testify
    He's right by my side
    I believe it be
His word is so clear to me
    Yeah, yeah

OK all I want is 100 million dollars and a bad bitch
Plus that paper chasin', it done turn me to a savage
Groupies in the lobby they just tryna get established
God, I've been guilty, fornicatin' from my status

All I wanted was 100 million dollars and a bad bitch
Plus that paper chasin', it done turn me to a savage
Groupies in the lobby they just tryna get established
God, I've been guilty, fornicatin' from my status

Niggas be lovin' the old Ye, they sayin' the new Ye, that nigga be spazzin'
But when Ali turn up and be Ali, you can't ever take that nigga back to Cassius
So you can gon' and make them lies, but I'm so sanctified
I don't sweat it, wipe my forehead with a handkerchief
And wash my sins in the blood of Jesus
People sayin', "Ye we need another Yeezus"
Lames try to tell me, "Cut the wilin' out, out"
But who the fuck is you reachin'
Pass me 30 bottles, champagne procession
That's that Holy water, sanctified refreshments
God sent me a message, said I'm too aggressive
    Really!? Me!? Too aggressive!?

Feel his blessings wash away my sins
I'm sanctified and, I have been born again
Now I proclaim, hallowed be thy name, oh

All I want is 100 million dollars and a bad bitch
Plus that paper chasin', it done turn me to a savage
Groupies in the lobby they just tryna get established
God, I've been guilty, fornicatin' from my status

Keys to my success, I get new keys and new address
Bitches that I date don't get degrees but they can dress
Felatio's amazin', make grilled cheese for you, the best
Major coke figure, I'm the fresh David Koresh
Soldiers all in Al-Qaeda, new Mercades for cadets
Balmain uniform, you know Donda designed the vest
Double M, that be the Army, better yet the Navy
Baby seen me in that Wraith, wanna have my baby
All I wanted was a hundred million dollars and a bad bitch
Now I want two hundred and menage in my palace
Walkin' out the jeweler with no mothafuckin' balance
Somewhere in Jamaica I'm still holdin' on my chalice
Rims on my Ferrari, my bitch said that I went childish
'Til I fucked the girl, the girl tweeted that I was stylish
When we fucked again, she said "That was just some foul shit"
I walk into the room, you can even hear all the silence

Feel his blessings wash away my sins
I'm sanctified and, I have been born again
Now I proclaim, hallowed be thy name, oh

    Sanctified
  • This Mastermind cut features a verse from Kanye West in which he pokes fun at the public perception that he's too aggressive. The rapper brought along G.O.O.D. Music signee Big Sean to spit the hook. Big Sean put out his verse that didn’t make the song as a free download a couple of days after the release of Mastermind.
  • DJ Mustard supplied the gospel-laced beat. The producer recalled to Billboard magazine how he got a call to meet West for the first time in a studio in Santa Barbara, California ."I didn't know who's project it was for, I just knew that I was going to get to work with Kanye," he said. "I've been a fan of his for a minute, so I was just kind of soaking up game and watching him do what he does."
  • That's Soul great Betty Wright singing the intro and bridge. The Miami-based singer-songwriter joined the family Gospel group the Echoes of Joy in 1956 and made her first records for Deep City at the age of thirteen. She won fame in the 1970s with the hits "Clean Up Woman" and "Where Is The Love," winning the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues song for the latter.

Wright's songs have been much sampled over the years, but producer Mike Dean confirmed that her contribution on this cut is not borrowed - they got the soul legend to come into the studio and croon some notes.
  • The song took a long time to complete. Ross recalled to The Sun newspaper: "The chorus started out as a sample. Then we tried a vocalist, then another, then another... In the end, we just said: 'Let's get a real gospel singer to give us that feeling.' I reached out to look beautiful, talented, Betty Wright, who has always been shining in Miami, and she showed some love and it paid off."

    Danny Boy Lyrics

Oh, Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side.
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling,
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow,
It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,
Oh, Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so!

But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,
If I am dead, as dead I well may be,
You'll come and find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be,
For you will bend and tell me that you love me,
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me!

    Danny Boy
  • Originally set to the tune of the ancient melody "The Londonderry Air," this song has been rumored to have been written about a father singing to his son, who apparently was named Danny. The song was based on a story about an Irish father whose son was eventually going off to war in Ireland.
  • Many of the traditional versions have only four verses, but the most recognized version, and the most common one for Ireland, has six verses in total. (thanks, Annabelle - Eugene, OR)
  • Some of the many artists who recorded this include Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Johnny Cash, Patti LaBelle, Glen Miller and Elvis Presley.
  • Tradition links the composition of the piece to a seventeenth century blind harpist, Rory Dall O'Cahan. In 1851, Jane Ross, of Limavady, Co Londonderry, wrote down the music after hearing it played by an itinerant fiddler. The "Londonderry Air" became popular with the Irish diaspora, especially in America, and in 1910, Frederick Edward Weatherly, an English lawyer, who is thought never to have set foot in Ireland, wrote the words.

According to the book Sunshine and in Shadow: The Family Story of Danny Boy written by Weatherly's great grandson Anthony Mann, after Weatherly penned the lyrics, he struggled to find the right melody for the song. Eventually Weatherly's sister-in-law, Margaret Enright, an Irish American known as Jess, introduced the tune he was looking for when she sung "Londonderry Air" to the lyricist while visiting his home in 1912. Weatherly shaped the lyrics to the tune and published "Danny Boy" soon after. However, Frederic never acknowledged Jess's contribution, which caused a major division in the family. Mann explained to The Irish Times: "Jess, who resented for the rest of her life the fact that Fred had taken this melody and made it his own, went on (with Eddie) to die in poverty while Fred enjoyed both fame and wealth."
  • Prudish Victorians, concerned that "Londonderry Air" bore too close a resemblance to the phrase "London derrière," preferred to refer to it by the title "An Air From County Derry."
  • If you don't like this song or are just sick of it, you're not the only one. When we asked Matt Kelly of the Dropkick Murphys about his favorite Irish songs, he replied: "I love 'Come Out Ye Black and Tans,' 'At The Rising of the Moon' is a great tune, and 'My Brother Sylveste' is a great song. Those are some of the bigger ones. You know, if I never heard 'Oh, Danny Boy' or 'Smile Again,' it would be just fine."
