This was written by the British group Joy Division, but they never recorded it. After Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis died in 1980, remaining members formed New Order and released this in 1981 on their album Ceremony.

This appears on the soundtrack for The Crow: City Of Angels.

Bomb

This song was inspired by the frequent IRA bombings in Ireland. The lyrics are intended to tell the story of a fellow who is just out shopping and ends up killed as an innocent bystander in an IRA bombing. Centuries of feuding between the Protestants and the Catholics have caused many deaths and severe injuries, not just to the people involved in the conflicts, but to innocent bystanders as well.

The song takes a cynical view of violence, as evident in the last two lines: "Of all the bravest stands in time/You stoop so low you'll never rise."

Letting The Cables Sleep

This about a close friend of lead singer Gavin Rossdale who had the HIV illness, but didn't tell anyone for 6 months because was ashamed. When Gavin found out, he felt real bad that his friend didn't feel comfortable talking about it, and wrote this about breaking the silence. (thanks, davey - leeds, England)

The "cables" refer to power cables. "Letting the cables sleep" means turning off the electricity and taking a rest.

In the video, if you look close enough, Gavin Rossdale is wearing a ring on his left hand. I took it as him being married and visiting a girl he used to (and supposedly now doesn't) have feelings for. They end up having sex, and realize they still want to be together, but are too afraid to tell each other. The girl just leaves before she says something she will regret. If you analyze the video, you see that when they touch there is color. As their hands touch, his world is tinted with her color. And when he smears paint on the walls, the colors are similar to the colors she wears, displaying a sense of longing. "Whatever you say is alright..." but she can't speak, adding some depth to the lyrics, and as she leaves she is signing to him that she's sorry. On the street you see that the bassist for Bush is playing on a corner, which is peculiar because a bass isn't really a solo instrument. The first single from Man On The Run, this song received its world premiere on the September 9, 2014 episode of The Kevin & Bean Show. Gavin Rossdale told the two radio presenters: "It comes from the record Man On The Run, 'Man On The Run' being this concept, a cross section of all of our lives. Trying to fit everything in. Trying to be successful. Trying to be the best we can and the challenges that go with that, for guys and girls, and the only way out is through being the uplifting concepts of the way I try and do it."

Rossdale explained to The Pulse of Radio about the approach he took to the song's subject matter. "It's obviously an old tenet, you know, the only way out is through, and I just think that for everybody that's a comforting thought," he said. This is the title track of Bush's sixth studio album. The song finds frontman Gavin Rossdale singing of feeling "the walls closing in," as he nears his 49th birthday. "When you first began writing songs, you see the world as infinite, and your time as infinite, because that's the nature of being young," he explained to Rolling Stone. "As you get older, you see it as chapters."

"The title 'Man on the Run' is meant as a universal take on a slice of my life and the people I come across," Rossdale added. "It just seems that the doors are closing and everyone is trying to figure out their way. It's the most universal title I've ever had. I always figure everyone is on the run."

Comedown Song Chart

Lead singer Gavin Rossdale wrote this about his ex-girlfriend, Suze DiMarchi. She was lead singer of a band called Baby Animals.

Rossdale had written songs with other people, but this was the first one he wrote on his own. It gave him a lot of confidence and inspired him to keep writing.

Rossdale said of this song: "It was written in the context of half regret, half celebration and just being objective about the situation of coming down from that high and dealing with those intense emotions."

Everything Zen Song Chart

This was the first single from Bush. The lyrics are about youth culture.

Lead singer Gavin Rossdale made reference to two of his favorite people in one of the lyrics: Tom Waits and Allan Ginsburg. The line "Rain Dogs howl for the century" refers to the Waits album Rain Dogs (also a "song), and the Ginsburg poem Howl.

The line "Minnie Mouse has grown up a cow, Dave's on sale again" refers to David Bowie, whose song "Life On Mars" contains the line: "Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow, Lennon's on sale again."

In an interview with Guitar World, guitarist Nigel Pulsford said that the solo in the song was "Probably recorded after a few drinks." (thanks, Corey - Boston, MA)

This was the first song Bush made a video for. It was directed by Matt Mahurin, who had done videos for U2, Peter Gabriel, and Alice in Chains.

This song helped bring the word "asshole" into the mainstream. The first verse contains the line "Should I fly Los Angeles, find my asshole brother," which most radio stations left as is. This type of profanity would have been removed just a few years earlier, but standards of acceptable profanity were being lowered. The TV show NYPD Blue was using it on primetime US TV, something that had never been done before.

KROQ, an influential radio station in Los Angeles, started playing this in 1994. Their airplay helped break the song in the US.

Bush included two versions of this song on their 1997 album Deconstructed: The Lhasa Fever Mix and the Derek DeLarge Mix. In the DeLarge Mix, you can hear Gavin Rossdale's ex-girlfriend Jasmine Lewis (subject of "Glycerine"), singing "no sex in your violence."

In 1996, No Doubt was Bush's opening act for about three months on an American tour. During this tour, Rossdale took up with No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani, leading Rossdale's bandmates to refer to this song as "Everything Gwen." Stefani and Rossdale later married.
