Rusted Nail

This is the lead single from Siren Charms. Lead singer Anders Fridén explained to Finland's Kaaos TV that the choice was made by the band's record company. "All the songs, for me, are great," he said. "And for the first time… 'Cause usually, I'm, like, 'OK, this is the single, this is the video, this is how everything should be and look and whatever.' And now, it was, 'I can't pick and choose. Record company, you decide.' And I guess they took 'Rusted Nail', because it shows where In Flames are today, and it's a nice description of the album. It has a little bit of that and a little bit of this. To me, you could pick any song; I like them all."

The music video was shot by Swedish director Patric Ullaeus of the Revolver Film Company AB, who has previously worked with Hammerfall, Europe and Lacuna Coil among others.

In Flames open Siren Charms with this track. Guitarist Björn Gelotte explained why they decided to kick off the album with this tune: "To be honest, that's not the obvious opening track for In Flames," he told Artist Direct . "We're not Dream Theater or Meshuggah, but it's got a little bit of that twist and turn in the rhythm part to a degree. That was the main idea to begin with."

"That was the first thing I played around with when I started writing that song," he continued. "Then, we thought we should put something more straightforward as a chorus in there and make it a little bit more interesting when it comes to certain things and then be more straightforward when it comes to the obvious. It's a little bit of an experiment, but when you listen to it, you'll hear it's In Flames. In the end, it turned out to be a good opener."

Lead singer Anders Fridén explained to Finland's Kaaos TV why In Flames chose to title their eleventh studio album after this song. "The title, 'Siren Charms', a siren is in Greek mythology," he said. "It's like a womanly creature who sings nice songs and lures sailors to the depths. And I used that kind of image to describe something in life that will charm you, and she has to symbolize the good and the evil part, so to speak. So it covers the whole album and all the theme of the album, if there's a theme. And all the different songs are around this topic."

"[They're] not very happy songs…. I think it has a sad tone or something," he continued. "It was created under a lot of emotions and stress and inspiration as well, because of this time pressure, but it was supposed to be like that."

The ancient Greek myth of sea nymphs luring sailors on to rocks by their singing has been the inspiration for a number of songs. They include:

In Flames stickman Daniel Svensson explained his drumming approach on Siren Charms to Metal Ignition: "This time, on 'Siren Charms', most of the songs weren't even written when we entered the studio, so I really had to push myself, 'cause I only had two weeks to record all the tracks and come up with fills and stuff like that," he said. "But when [guitarist] Björn [Gelotte] has a riff, or presents a riff, we both know how the drums should sound like for it to be 'In-Flames-ish.' And then I try not to overplay and make too many weird and fast drum fills. I try to make them more melodic and fit the music more than [make them] fast or whatever."

"I think it's easy to ruin a song, or ruin the balance of a song, so you have to try to write tasteful fills," Svensson added. "And that's my approach [to] drumming."

Guitarist Björn Gelotte told Ultimate Guitar the story of this song: "It was actually one of the songs when we first wrote it and recorded it that we thought, 'Well this is probably gonna be the first single,'" he said. "Because it sounded like that when we had the right tempo and the chorus was a big one and the keys were in there so we knew we were gonna play this live."

"But it ended up we had so many songs we wanted to have as singles," he continued, "and in the end we just said, 'It doesn't really matter. Have the people that need to promote this decide what they think would be best.' This is how it ended up and everybody was super happy with either one."
