Slumville Sunrise

This song finds Bugg thinking back to his childhood on Nottingham's Clifton Estate. It was released as the second single from the Rick Rubin produced Shangri La set. "'Slumville Sunrise' is the first track I wrote for the album," Bugg told NME. "It's kind of one last look back to where I came from."

The heist movie themed video was helmed by Shane Meadows and co-stars Andrew Shim from the director's This Is England film in full Elvis gear. Bugg makes his acting debut in two scenes that frame the song.

Messed Up Kids

Bugg wrote this song in Nashville with Raconteurs singer and guitarist Brendan Benson. It finds him singing about returning home to Clifton, Nottingham after all his success. "That song is written from a different perspective of going back," Bugg told The Sun. "When I go back to Clifton the main concerns are money and finding ways to pay bills and buy things, It was just very strange for me after all that's happened."

"There's a lot of guilt," he added. "Why should I be able to go to all these lovely places? The more you start earning and the better you do it seems the more people want to give you things. I've been given clothes, an expensive Ralph Lauren leather jacket. I'm hardly going to say no. I buy things and people ask, 'Why did you buy it?' It's simple. Because I wanted to and because I now can."

Bugg said in the lead up to making Shangri-La that he wouldn't be able to write about the council estates and characters of Nottingham any more now that he's touring the world and selling thousands of albums. While this is true for the majority of the album, this song finds him singing about teenage drug dealers and prostitutes in his home town. "I'll never forget where I'm from," he told NME. "I'm speaking about it from a place that I really knew, but now I'm on the outside looking in. There's a feeling of guilt involved that people live like that and that's the way it is. People living on this estate and trying to make a living and there I am. I got to live my dream."

Bugg had a short relationship with her, and after their breakup, tabloid gossip was that the singer was devastated. He explained: "People were making stories about it so I made mine from it."

The song was dropped from the final tracklisting of Shangri-La and replaced by "Kitchen Table." "Not because of the subject," said Bugg, "but when the final mixes came back it was one of them that didn't seem as strong."

This acoustic lament about the end of a relationship is one of several songs on Shangri La where Bugg addresses romance. He explained to The Sun: "The only reason I wrote the songs was because I don't really talk about stuff like that."

Many fans suggest this song is about Bugg's short relationship with top model Cara Delevingne. Such lyrical allusions to dating a celebrity as "All the time people follow us where we go," and "all of these people want us to fail," appear to confirm this, though Bugg has declined to comment.

Bugg described American Idol as a "dream smasher" after performing this song on the show. The singer-songwriter told BBC's Newsbeat program that he was personally asked to perform by one of the judges. "It was quite sad," he said. "We ended up doing the show because one of the judges, Keith Urban, wanted us. [But] it's cruel. It's like, 'Thanks for coming on but you'll never get a contract.' It's the dream smasher."

Bugg penned this song with Raconteurs singer and guitarist Brendan Benson and the singer's longtime collaborator, Iain Archer from Snow Patrol. It was one of three songs written by the trio that ended up on Shangri La, the others being "Messed Up Kids" and "Kingpin."

"That came from my publishing end," Bugg recalled to Billboard magazine. "I was very sceptical about three guys in a room trying to write tunes, but I gave it a try and thought maybe I'd learn a thing or two. We just jammed around in the studio and it was fun and natural for a few days. So that was pretty sweet."
