Bed Peace

Los Angeles R&B singer songwriter Jhené Aiko began her career contributing backing vocals to recordings by the R&B boy band B2K. Her debut mixtape Sailing Soul, which was self-released in 2011, got her noticed and Aiko gained further attention after contributions to Big Sean's Hall Of Fame track "Beware" and Drake's Nothing Was The Same cuts, "From Time" and "Wu-Tang Forever." This was released as the lead single from Aiko's debut EP, Sail Out after she signed to Def Jam. "Sail Out basically means to be free," Aiko explained. "Go with the wind, you know, like a sailboat. I think that's really important when it comes to peace… inner peace especially. You can't help anyone else if you don't have it together for yourself."

The song features Childish Gambino, who combines rapping with writing for television, performing with his sketch group Derrick Comedy and acting on the NBC comedy Community under his real name of Donald Glover.

The single's artwork and video was inspired by John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1969 Bed-Ins for Peace protest against the Vietnam War. The clip finds Aiko and Gambino lying in bed in a Los Angeles hotel room while reporters interview them. They're both clad in all-white like Lennon and Ono's original protest. Aiko explained that it was her experience growing up in LA, which inspired her to advocate a movement for peace. "I grew up in LA, and there was a lot of stuff going on all the time," she stated. I've always been around noise and chaos."

Sail Out cruised to #8 on the Billboard Hot 200 Albums chart in its first week, making the record Def Jam Records' biggest-ever EP debut.

The song represents the fun and irresponsible side of Jhené Aiko. "When I wrote 'Bed Peace,' I knew that I wanted to make something more playful because I usually make sad songs about heartbreak," she told Radio.com . "So on this song, I took a different approach and decided to talk about what a perfect day would be like for me and a perfect lover. The song is all about slowing down every now and then and not worrying about anything but the moment."

Stay Ready

Aiko first collaborated with Kendrick Lamar on his 2010 track "Growing Apart (To Get Closer)," and this tune finds the LA songstress teaming up with the Compton rapper again. Aiko told Radio.com that after hearing Lamar spitting about monogamy on his verse, she decided to change her own lyrics up a bit. "When I recorded the song, I wanted to keep it simple and sexy," Aiko explained. "But when he sent me back his verse, I realized the song could be more than that, so I decided to elaborate on my original verse and stop being lazy."

Aiko also released an alternate version in which her alter ego J Henny replaced Kendrick Lamar's verse. She told Rap-Up.com that J Henny had a bit of fire in her. "She still sings, but she's more aggressive," Aiko explained. "She likes to really talk a lot of s--t and talk about things that a lot of R&B singers don’t talk about."

The Vapors

This was inspired by a G Pen Vaporizer that Aizo bought for smoking weed. She explained to Artist Direct : "The song started out with me talking about a guy and how I couldn't stop thinking about him. I was also writing the song while I was under the influence of this G Pen. For me, vaporizers give you a cleaner high. It's in small doses so it's not like you're out of this world, but they make you feel a certain way. I wanted it to be a double entendre."

"That was one of my favorite songs to write," Aiko continued. "I wanted to convey my feelings of how 'The Vapors' make me feel. Keep in mind it could be about a guy also. I wanted it to represent how I felt about both without compromising or lying about the other. If you take it as I'm talking about vaping weed or talking about a guy, it makes sense in both cases."

This song started off with a CD of beats given to her by Aiko's record label boss, producer No I.D. One of the instrumentals especially spoke to her. She told Artist Direct : "That's how I write. I will just write around his track and wait until I start saying or singing something along."

"I couldn't write anything to it," Aiko continued. "I was like, 'I love this track so far' so I went into the studio and just freestyle-d it. I was really going through it. I had just went through this heartbreak. I really felt like I wanted to tell that story. It was a freestyle."

Spotless Mind

First performed by Aiko during a performance in April 2014 at the Coachella festival, this smooth song was originally written by the singer in 2012. She recalled to Fader magazine: "I was on the Lauryn Hill and Nas tour, and I probably did it in 45 minutes in GarageBand. It's also very specific, a feel-good song."
