The Beginning... Lyrics

Last night was the last night
You'll ever spend alone
Couldn't wait
Did it in the living room
Soon as I saw you, baby, I had plans
Plans to do it 'til we have a baby
Even if the world is crazy
Pick some names, boy or girl
Then we'll change, change the world

So after you change your clothes
Girl, if you change your mind
I'm ready, whatever time

It's the beginning of forever
You don't have to go
Sometimes you just know
It's the beginning of forever
It don't have to end
Keep doing it, and doing it again, oh
Keep doing it, and doing it again, oh

Last time was the last time
I was worn and done
You the best, that's why I want another one
Soon as I saw you, baby, I had plans
Planned to take you to my elevator
And cook a little breakfast later
Pick a place and go there, girl
Then we'll change, change the world

So after you change your clothes
Girl, if you change your mind
I'm ready, whatever time

It's the beginning of forever
You don't have to go
Sometimes you just know
It's the beginning of forever
It don't have to end
Keep doing it, and doing it again, oh
Keep doing it, and doing it again, oh

The Beginning...
  • This promo single is from John Legend's Love in the Future album. The track was produced by long-term collaborator Dave Tozer and Hit-Boy, whose credits collectively include Jay-Z, Rihanna and Mary J Blige. It was written by Roc Nation singer-songwriter James Fauntleroy, who has penned songs for and with the likes of Drake, Big Sean and Justin Timberlake.
  • Tozer told SonicScoop about the production of spacy, minimal track: "It's very minimal with some haunting sounds," he said. "I'm using the sounds of the Mellotron a lot, giving the track depth and heavy mood."
  • The track samples "Winter Song" by Sarah Bareilles and Ingrid Michelson. Hit Boy brought in the basic sample and basic drum pattern for the song.
  • Like many of the other Love in The Future tracks, this song concerns Legend's relationship with his partner, the model Chrissy Teigen. The lyrics were inspired by his expectancy of a happy future with his new girl after their first night spent together.
  • When Legend showcased Love In The Future in front of an intimate crowd in New York City, he revealed that Chrissy was left blushing after playing this song to her parents. "She got a little embarrassed. The second line is 'We couldn't wait, we did it in the living room,'" he laughed.

    Save the Night Lyrics

A little trouble in the city
    Trouble in my home
She told me love don't live here anymore
I wanna run to the light
It's too dark in this part of night
I need somebody who can make it right

    And it's on tonight
How about we go and Save the Night
I can see you want it and so do I
How about we go and save the night
    Let's save the night

I'm not a one man band
I want to sing a duet
You and me would sound much better
You look so good in my bed
And if your gonna go out
Your gonna go on with a bang
Let's save the night I'll be your superman

    And it's on tonight
How about we go and save the night
I can see you want it and so do I
How about we go and save the night
    Let's save the night

I see the night flashing before her eyes
Resuscitating bring it back to life

    And it's on tonight
How about we go and save the night
I can see you want it and so do I
How about we go and save the night
    Let's save the night

    Oh, let's save the night
    Let's save the night

    Save the Night
  • The Runners original demo for the song's chorus was in a completely different key. Co-producer Dave Tozer told SonicScoop how he went about altering it: "The first thing I did," he explained, "was change the key to put it in a better spot for John's range, then John and I rewrote the song, starting with the chorus melody, then we wrote the rest of the parts around it. We gave the verses more of a bluesy vibe and we added some 808s, a ton of claps, and really made those drums hit."

  • Legend penned this track with Kanye West and Jeff Bhasker, the man behind much of Yeezy's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. The song features a vocal contribution from Seal. Legend explained during his NYC iHeart Radio Live show how his collaboration with the English singer-songwriter came to be: "Kanye was working at the Mercer hotel in New York. He was mainly working on Watch the Throne at that time, with Jay-Z," he recalled. "He invited me over every once in a while to work on my album, when he had time to pull himself away from Watch the Throne. He ran into Seal in the lobby of the Mercer and invited him up to the room where we were working. Seal and I, Kanye and Jeff Bhasker wrote the song together in that moment."

"Whenever you write a song especially early in the process of the album, you never know what's gonna happen with it but this one came out beautifully," Legend added.

Where Did My Baby Go Lyrics

I happened to notice a girl in a light shade of blue
I happened to see her, the sight of her leaves me confused
    She may not be you
But she looks just like you

You should've seen the way she wore her dress
    And her white stiletto shoes
You should've seen the way they looked on her
Just like the ones that I bought you
I searched for days on end to no avail
‘Til I found them in Peru
She must've been to Lima just as well
    Because she had them too
You should've seen her eyes, her lips, her face
She looked as sweet as honeydew
You should've seen the way she walked away
Oh, she swayed her hips like you
I was only several steps from her
    But she never noticed me
I took another sip of fine liqueur
It was quite a sight to see

I happened to notice a girl in a light shade of blue
I happened to see her, the sight of her leaves me confused
    She may not be you
But she looks just like you

You should've seen the way he stroked her hair
And the smile that lit her face
You should've seen the way he kissed her lips
Did it have the same sweet taste?
Though my mid, it might be running wild
    In constant search of you
It's funny how my eyes keep seeing things my heart
    Would not believe are true

I happened to notice a man in a dark shade of blue
Who happened to be with a woman who leaves me confused
    She may not be you
But she looks just like you

Maxine, she looks just like you
Maxine, she looks just like you
    Maxine, Maxine

    Where Did My Baby Go
  • Several critics have commented that this song sounds like something written by Burt Bacharach. However, Legend told Performing Songwriting magazine that any similarities were accidental. "I'm not really a student of his work," he said. "He was a prolific songwriter, and there are songs of his that I didn't even know I knew, like songs sung by Luther Vandross and Aretha Franklin. But I don't own any of his albums. It just so happened that I end up sounding like him."

"You listen to music and use it to try to create something new, and who knows what's going to come into your head," Legend continued."A song is a song. You produce a song, and at that moment when you produce it, that's when you take it into a genre. Before you produce it, it's just a song, and it could be any style depending on how you decide to mix it and arrange it. To me, when you evaluate songwriting, you don't do it on a genre basis. You ask, 'Is this a good song?'"

You & I (Nobody in the World) Lyrics

You fix your make up, just so
Guess you don't know, that your beautiful
Try on every dress that you own
You were fine in my eyes, a half hour ago

If your mirror won't make it any clearer I'll
Be the one to let you know

    Out of all the girls
You my one and only girl
Ain't nobody in the world tonight

All of the stars, you make them shine like they were ours
Ain't nobody in the world but you and I
    You and I
Ain't nobody in the world but you

You stop the room when we walk in
    Spotlights on everybody staring
Tell all of these boys, they wasting their time
Stop standing in line, cause you're all mine

And this evening I, won't let the feeling die
I never wanna leave your side

    Out of all the girls
You my one and only girl
Ain't nobody in the world tonight

All of the stars you make them shine like they were ours
Ain't nobody in the world but you and I
    You and I
    Ain't nobody in the world

You keep wondering if you're what I'm wanting
You don't even have to try

    You don't have to try
    Don't try
    Don't try
    You don't have to try

    Out of all the girls
You my one and only girl
Ain't nobody in the world tonight

All of the stars, they don't shine brighter than you are
Ain't nobody in the world but you and I
    You and I

You & I (Nobody in the World)
  • The fourth single from Love in the Future, this is a song of devotion to Legend's fiancée Chrissy Teigen. The track was serviced to urban adult contemporary radio in the US on April 29, 2014.
  • The track was produced by Legend's long-term collaborator Dave Tozer with Frank Ocean's production partner James "Malay" Ho. Tozer described its instrumentation to SonicScoop : "This song is a real journey," he said. "It's a nice breather for where it is on the record. It's got a moody guitar to set the tone, then it blossoms open. Then there's this '80s Linn drum snare giving it power in the second chorus. Then the horns, and the Moog synth. There's this big, climactic bridge, then it comes down to a whisper with this mournful Moog theremin sound. Then it builds back up - it's got great dynamics."
  • Directed by Mishka Kornai, the song's music video celebrates the natural beauty of women from all walks of life. The clip opens and closes with Chrissy Teigen and among the other famous faces that appear are transgender Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actress Tatyana Ali.

Legend explained regarding the inspiration for the clip: "When we shot the video, we wanted to examine the idea of what people see when they look in the mirror. We wanted to show all types of beauty and speak to the idea that each of them is special and beautiful."

    Glory Lyrics

One day when the Glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
Oh one day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
    Oh glory (Glory, glory)
    Oh (Glory, glory)

Hands to the Heavens, no man, no weapon
Formed against, yes glory is destined
Every day women and men become legends
Sins that go against our skin become blessings
The movement is a rhythm to us
Freedom is like religion to us
    Justice is juxtapositionin' us
Justice for all just ain't specific enough
One son died, his spirit is revisitin' us
Truant livin' livin' in us, resistance is us
That's why Rosa sat on the bus
That's why we walk through Ferguson with our hands up
When it go down we woman and man up
They say, "Stay down", and we stand up
Shots, we on the ground, the camera panned up
King pointed to the mountain top and we ran up

One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
Oh one day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
    Oh glory (Glory, glory)
    Oh (Glory, glory)

Now the war is not over, victory isn't won
And we'll fight on to the finish, then when it's all done
We'll cry glory, oh glory (Glory, glory)
    Oh (Glory, glory)
We'll cry glory, oh glory (Glory, glory)
    Oh (Glory, glory)

Selma's now for every man, woman and child
Even Jesus got his crown in front of a crowd
They marched with the torch, we gon' run with it now
Never look back, we done gone hundreds of miles
From dark roads he rose, to become a hero
Facin' the league of justice, his power was the people
Enemy is lethal, a king became regal
Saw the face of Jim Crow under a bald eagle
The biggest weapon is to stay peaceful
We sing, our music is the cuts that we bleed through
Somewhere in the dream we had an epiphany
Now we right the wrongs in history
No one can win the war individually
It takes the wisdom of the elders and young people's energy
Welcome to the story we call victory
The comin' of the Lord, my eyes have seen the glory

One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
Oh one day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
    Oh glory (Glory, glory)
    Oh (Glory, glory)
    Oh glory (Glory, glory)
    Hey (Glory, glory)

When the war is won, when it's all said and done
    We'll cry glory (Glory, glory)
    Oh (Glory, glory)

    Glory Song Chart
  • This motivational anthem was recorded by John Legend and Common for the American historical drama film Selma. The movie recounts the three 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches that lead to President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
  • The ballad resonates with both the film and current social unrest. Common references in the first of his two verses Michael Brown's August 2014 shooting by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri as a counterpart to the historical events the movie chronicles.

One son died, his spirit is revisitin' us
Truant livin' livin' in us, resistance is us
That's why Rosa sat on the bus
That's why we walk through Ferguson with our hands up

"This is not only for paying honor to those who lived in these times during the '60s, but also really relevant to today," Common told Billboard magazine. "You can look at what's going on in Ferguson, and it's not a far comparison to what happened to Jimmy Lee Jackson during the time of the civil rights movement that is shown in the film. So I really was thinking about encouraging people that we've come a long way, but we've still got some fighting to do, and we are capable. We've got to carry this torch and take it to the next level."
  • It was Common's idea to bring Legend aboard for the song's hook. "One day I was sitting in my bedroom and I thought, 'Man, John Legend would be the perfect voice to combine with to tell this story.' He was in London when I reached out to him, and I told him everything about Selma in about a five-minute conversation, because he was preparing for a show," the rapper recalled. "He said he wouldn't be back in L.A. for a minute but said he could go in the studio on a day off and come up with some ideas."

Legend sent him back a piano demo of the chorus, leaving Common to come up with the verses.
  • There is no percussion on the tune as Common wanted it to encompass classic protest song elements. "This is not a rap song," he maintained. "It's a beautiful song like the way when you heard Bob Dylan or Stevie Wonder singing songs or John Lennon doing 'Imagine.' I wanted people to really hear what was being said. We don't have a drumbeat to it. It's just vocal, piano and an orchestra arrangement. We wanted it to have an intimacy, but for it to be majestic, because it's for Dr. King."
  • This won Best Original Song at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards. Common said in his acceptance speech: "As I got to know the people of the Civil Rights Movement I realized I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand, but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty. Selma has awakened my humanity."
  • John Legend told Billboard magazine the story of the song. "Common came to me and he said, 'We need a song for the end title,'" he recalled. "And I didn't have any expectations beyond trying to write a great song that fits the film and honors the subject matter, which was really important for me."

"We wanted something powerful that captured the social importance of the movement and of the film, and he suggested a few titles to me, one of which was 'Glory.' And that was the one that felt most resonant to me for a chorus to build on," Legend continued. "One day I was in London with a few hours off thinking about the idea of glory, and started singing this chorus I had already started sketching. And I recorded the piano and the vocal and sent it to Common."

"I wanted something that tied the spirit of Selma with what was happening in the streets at the time we were writing," he concluded, "which was people protesting in Missouri and eventually New York about injustice and police brutality."
  • Legend and Common sang this song to close out the Grammy Awards in 2015.
  • This won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2015. When Common and John Legend performed it at the ceremony, it got a rousing reception, with some in the audience moved to tears. In accepting the award, both artists spoke about the march from Selma and its impact today. Legend quoted Nina Simone, saying, "It's an artist's duty to reflect the times in which we live." He added: "We wrote this song for a film that was based on events that were 50 years ago, but we say that Selma is now, because the struggle for justice is right now."
