Everything Lyrics

Everything
  • This sweeping Rock anthem finds Nine Inch Nails at their grittiest and poppiest. Frontman Trent Reznor told UK newspaper The Sun: "I was trying to make something that leapt out of the speakers in a very unfamiliar way. At first listen, it might seem to be in praise of life but it's supposed to come off as an arrogant f--- you." I've survived. It also gets less triumphant and more reflective and melancholy towards the end."
  • Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham contributed synthesizers and backing vocals to this song. He also played the guitar on three other Hesitation Marks songs.

    In Two
  • This song features axe work by Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham, one of three songs on Hesitation Marks that he played guitar on. Said Trent Reznor, "I thought his style might be so out it would be in, compared to the alien landscapes we were dropping him into."

    Head Like A Hole Lyrics

God money I'll do anything for you.
God money just tell me what you want me to.
God money nail me up against the wall.
God money don't want everything he wants it all.
    No you can't take it
    No you can't take it
No you can't take that away from me
    No you can't take it
    No you can't take it
No you can't take that away from me
    Head Like A Hole.
    Black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
    Head like a hole.
    Black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
God money's not looking for the cure.
God money's not concerned with the sick among the pure.
God money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised.
God money's not one to choose
    No you can't take it
    No you can't take it
No you can't take that away from me
    No you can't take it
    No you can't take it
No you can't take that away from me
    Head like a hole.
    Black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
    Head like a hole.
    Black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You're going to get what you deserve.
    You know who you are.

    Head Like A Hole
  • This song is about the control that money has over people and the pain and suffering associated with it. "God Money" is just that. Money has become a god unto itself (especially in capitalist societies, like the one in America). Trent Reznor is basically saying he'd rather die than give in to temptation.
  • Both the song name and the moniker Nine Inch Nails were inspired by a quote by Al Jourgensen , lead singer of the metal band Ministry: "Listening to Ministry is like having a nine inch nail hammered into your head like a hole."
  • This was one of the 165 "lyrically questionable" songs pulled from the radio at the suggestion of Clear Channel Communications, a company that owned over 1,200 radio stations, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
  • The new wave/punk band Devo covered this for Jackie Chan's Hong Kong action flick Police Story 3: Super Cop in 1992.
  • The Vitamin String Quartet reworked this as part of their tribute to Pretty Hate Machine in 2005.
  • Former MTV VJ Lisa "Kennedy" Montgomery loudly sang this to Reznor when she first met him, embarrassing the singer and winning a $20 bet in the process.
  • This was used on Beavis and Butt-Head in the 1993 episode "Door to Door."

    Album: The Downward Spiral
    Released: 1994

    Heresy Lyrics

He sewed his eyes shut because he is afraid to see
He tries to tell me what I put inside of me
He's got the answers to ease my curiosity
He dreamed up a god and called it Christianity

Your god is dead and no one cares
If there is a hell I will see you there
He flexed his muscles to keep his flock of sheep in line
He made a virus that would kill off all the swine
His perfect kingdom of killing suffering and pain
Demands devotion atrocities done in his name

Your god is dead and no one cares
    Drowning in his own hypocrisy
And if there is a hell I will see you there
Burning with your god in humility
    Will you die for this?

    Heresy
  • This song is about confronting and questioning Christianity. The lyrics describe how Christianity is used to control people and how it contradicts itself: "His perfect kingdom of killing, suffering and pain demands devotion atrocities done in his name."
  • Nine Inch Nails mainman Trent Reznor explained that much of The Downward Spiral album dealt with how people were always trying to control you, and this song takes on a specific institution. He told Kerrang!: "Churches tell you to do this and that, or the punishment will be going to Hell. In every relationship you get into, someone wants to control it. I'm aware of that, I'm addressing it, I'm challenging it."

Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile Lyrics and Youtube Music Videos

    Album: The Fragile
    Released: 1999

    The Fragile Lyrics

    She shines
In a world full of ugliness
She matters when everything is meaningless

    Fragile
    She doesn't see her beauty
    She tries to get away
    Sometimes
It's just that nothing seems worth saving
I can't watch her slip away

I won't let you fall apart

She reads the minds of all the people as they pass her by
    Hoping someone can see
If I could fix myself I'd - but it's too late for me

I wont let you fall apart

We'll find the perfect place to go where we can run and hide
I'll build a wall and we can keep them on the other side
    ...but they keep waiting
    ...and picking...

It's something I have to do
    I was there, too
    Before everything else
    I was like you

    The Fragile
  • The album was recorded at Trent Reznor's Nothing Studios in New Orleans, using the latest and greatest in digital technology, including ProTools editing equipment. Reznor played most of the instruments, with guest musicians dropping by every now and then. With ProTools, Trent and engineer Alan Moulder were able to record lots of stuff and then mix and match as they saw fit. To create the percussion sounds on this song, they did a lot of experimenting with drums, rigging a drum kit to trigger a synthesizer in order to create a hybrid sound. They also gathered boxes, bottles, and some glass that they put into the bass drum. These various percussion sounds were recorded and turned into a loop for the basis of the track.
  • This is one of 23 tracks on The Fragile, which tell a story known only to Reznor. An earlier track is called "The Frail," which uses elements similar to the title track. While "The Fragile" finds Reznor singing to a girl and offering to look after her ("I won't let you fall apart"), it's part of a bigger picture which Trent later explained was his way of working out his issues with addiction.
