Lead singer Corey Taylor: "It's about the last time I tried to commit suicide, and more to the point, the first day I figured out what life was all about. It's about the last day in a life I don't want to remember and about the first day in a life that I am living right now."

When asked why he wanted to kill himself, Taylor said: "Why does any 17-year-old guy want to kill themselves? A chick of course! I thought she was the be and end all of everything and when you are that age, those emotions won't let you f---ing consider reality. I was in a really, really painful place. I put 31 slashes on my arm and I took a bottle of pills and a friend found me and took me to hospital. Luckily the cuts weren't too deep but I still have the scars. They pumped my stomach, which was a completely f---ing horrific experience, one that I don't wish on anyone. They make you drink this stuff which tastes like maple syrup, which is why I can't eat pancakes for the rest of my life, that induces you to vomit uncontrollably. Spit It Out

This was written in retaliation to childish mudslinging by a handful of individuals who worked at a local radio station in Des Moines, Iowa, where the band is from. These individuals worked hard to keep Slipknot off the air.

This was broadcast in fragments on Mancow's Morning Madhouse after the station threatened to pull Mancow's show from their station. It was also right after Slipknot were pulled from a slot on a live concert in Chicago hosted by Mancow; thanks to same said individuals at the aforementioned radio station.

The digi-pak of Slipknot's self-titled release includes a rough mix of this song known as the "hyper version." (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for all above)

The video is based on the movie The Shining, directed by Stanley Kubrick, but using the members of Slipknot in the main roles. Kubrick touched on themes of madness and mental breakdowns in a lot of his films, as do many Slipknot songs. (thanks, James - Dartmouth, Canada)

Slipknot drummer Chris Fehn (#3) talks about shooting videos: "The video that we did for 'Spit It Out,' Ice-T showed up, so it was rad, dude. We got to meet Ice-T, and he hung out on the video shoot and everything, and took pictures with us. That's the coolest thing. Otherwise, they suck, dude. It's so boring. Like, you play the song a million times, you know, and you can barely hear it through these stupid little monitors they give you. It's just such a long, drawn-out day that it's tough. Whenever Slipknot play "Spit It Out" live, they do what's called the "zero bulls--t" at the bridge. Corey tells all the fans in the crowd to get down on their knees and jump up when he says "jump the f--k up," at which point the crowd goes crazy. 742617000027 was the shipping code on their 1996 self-released album, Mate, Feed, Kill, Repeat. All the band members wear that number on their jumpsuits.

This is about a man who keeps having repetitive black and white dreams about laying in a bathtub full of his own blood with his wrists slit. One day he wakes up and sees that his dream has become a reality, but he doesn't want to believe it and he tries to fall back asleep again.

Slipknot drummer Chris Fehn (#3) told us about this track: "It was just a basic song. We didn't know it was going to be that popular. The funny thing is the record label, especially new guys at the record label, were coming around when we started getting big, and they're like, 'Oh, the next record you can write like three Wait And Bleeds.' And we're just like, You are an idiot. Therefore, we don't do that. But obviously the band, believe it or not, we have so much control over what we do that we don't write anything for money, we don't write anything for popularity, we have to like it first. The Negative One Song Chart

The first song to be released by Slipknot, following the death of bassist Paul Gray in 2010 and the departure of drummer Joey Jordison in 2013, this finds Corey Taylor shouting/screaming:

It has been speculated that the lyrics are about Jordison, who was assigned "1" as his numbered alias shortly after Slipknot's formation. Speaking to Metal Hammer, Corey Taylor put the argument to rest, denying Jordison was the singer's muse for the song. "'The Negative One' was about me, not about Joey, and that's why the song says, 'Your choices are the negative one and me,' which is the two kind of colliding together," he said. "'The Devil In I' is the same, which you'd think would be f---ing apparent."

"We all have so many different sides to ourselves, but especially with this band," Taylor added. "When we get together, there's something about the music we make that really unleashes the crazy, dark s--t inside of us. And that song in particular is about, basically, embracing it again, giving into it and letting it have its say. Because if you don't, then you sit on it and you repress and it blows up in really negative ways. So, that song is about freeing it."

The song's music video was directed by percussionist Shawn Crahan with Darren Craig (Rihanna's "What Now"). Crahan has helmed most of Slipknot's music videos and concert documentaries.

Taylor told Rolling Stone says the song is about himself coming to terms with the loss of Paul Gray, which left him with a feeling of powerlessness. "It's about, 'Why didn't I think of something?'" he said. "'Why didn't I do something? Why didn't I try to be a better friend, to be a better brother?' You'll keep yourself awake nights thinking that s--t. You have to turn on yourself and go, 'You can mourn this person. You can keep this person in your heart, but life is life. It's just something that you can't control.'"

Skeptic Song Chart

Slipknot's .5: The Gray Chapter is their first album not to feature bassist Paul Gray, who accidentally overdosed in 2010. The album title and many of the lyrics reference their fallen colleague particularly on this song. XIX Song Chart

The title of .5: The Gray Chapter and many of its songs concern Slipknot's founder bassist Paul Gray, who accidentally overdosed in 2010. This is the album's opening track, which was constructed by percussionist Shawn Crahan as an eulogy for their fallen friend. The drummer admitted to Rolling Stone that when he first heard the lyrics that frontman Corey Taylor wrote to accompany his instrumentation, they drove him to tears. "I don't usually let people see me cry," he said. "It's too hard. But when I heard what Corey Taylor sang on the song 'XIX,' I cried and cried and cried. It hurt so bad."

Corey Taylor explained the song's title to Kerrang!: "It's pronounced 'XX,' but it's supposed to represent a couple of different things," he said. "It's the 19th year of the band's existence, and it's also a metaphor for stage two, because track one on the Iowa album was '515,' and this is XIX, So in Roman numerals it's almost like a double of that. So it represents a new start, and seeing where the road leads to."

Taylor added: "Lyrically, it's really about getting back up on your feet after getting smashed in the mouth, basically. It's just kind of the start of, you know, what would become to me the second stage of the band's career."

Corey Taylor told Kerrang!: "What you hear on the record is what we did on the very first demo. It's all me, all raw, in one take, the first time we recorded it."

The song's title is a war cry. Frontman Corey Taylor explained to Kerrang!: "To me, I hear this song and I see us – and not to be weird – but charging down the hill towards the doubters, the naysayers, the people who might have thought that this band was down and out. This song is about the big changes that the band has seen in the six years since they released All Hope Is Gone and lost their bassist Paul Gray. Corey Taylor explained to Kerrang!: "It's basically trying to deal with this love-hate situation that we have, with not only the business side of it, but just the way that the game is played."

"We are great students of the game, but at the same time it's like there were so many people who want to take advantage of the fact that people pour into their hearts into this industry, and their love and creativity into the music, and they tried to take advantage of that," he continued. "This is us trying to make peace with the evils that can come with that. The vultures are definitely circling the meat half the time."

"There's the old adage, 'Be careful what you wish for,' and, 'Be careful doing what you love, because sometimes it will turn on you.' And, you know, anytime you mix something that you love and business, you're gonna find the rusty cracks in there that piss you off," Taylor continued. "So that song, really, is about how much I still love making music, but also how much I just hate the business side, the numbers side, the people in the suits who try to run stuff, and having to deal with them and having to learn how to talk to them."

"And, you know, it's frustrating sometimes, but it is what it is," he concluded. "And luckily, we got a great song out of it, and we were able to really paint something really cool with it and just be able to put it out there for people to dig."

Custer Song Chart

George Armstrong Custer was a Civil War hero and subsequently a ruthless Indian fighter. He is famous for the Battle of the Little Bighorn, commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand, in which a force of 650 men led by Custer, suffered a severe defeat to around 2,500 Indian warriors.

The death of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray and the controversial departure of drummer Joey Jordison meant many doubed whether the band could reach the same heights.
