Thunder Road Song Chart

This was the first track on Born To Run, a crucial album for Springsteen. His first two albums sold poorly, and he was in danger of losing his record deal if he did not produce a hit. With songs like this one about escaping to the open road, he connected with an audience that proved extremely loyal.

He considered this song the "invitation" to the album, with the opening notes being the welcome. "Something is opening up," Springsteen said during his 2005 Storytellers appearance. "What I hoped it would be was the sense of a larger life, greater experience, sense of fun, the sense that your personal exploration and possibilities were all lying somewhere inside of you."

Springsteen took the title from a 1958 Robert Mitchum movie. He did not see the film, but got the idea from a poster for it in a theater lobby.

The vocal sound was inspired by Roy Orbison. Springsteen pays homage to him with the line: "The radio plays Roy Orbison singing for the lonely," a reference to Orbison's 1960 hit, "Only The Lonely."

The name of the girl mentioned at the beginning was changed several times. It had been Angelina and Chrissie before Springsteen settled on "Mary's dress waves."

The original title was "Wings For Wheels." It began as an outtake called "Glory Road."

Cars were very important growing up in New Jersey and show up in many of Springsteen songs. Bruce's first car was a '57 Chevy with orange flames painted on the hood.

This is a concert favorite that Springsteen has performed at many of his shows over the years.

At one point, Born To Run was going to be a concept album spanning the course of a day, with an acoustic version of this starting the album and the full band version closing it.

Springsteen's friend and future manager, Jon Landau, convinced him to record this at The Record Plant in New York instead of the low-budget studio he was using. Springsteen's current manager, Mike Appel, resented Landau's influence and would file a lawsuit that kept Springsteen from recording for 3 years.

Since the band didn't know the song very well, Springsteen used a version with just him at the piano to open a series of shows at The Bottom Line in New York City in 1975. Sponsored by a New York radio station, the disc jockey, Dave Herman, apologized on the air for not playing enough Springsteen the morning after the first show.

On November 3, 1980, Springsteen kicked off his tour to support the album in Ann Arbor, Michigan. For the encore, Bob Seger, who is to Michigan what Springsteen is to New Jersey, joined him onstage to perform this.

Has been performed live many different ways: with the full band, solo with guitar, solo with piano, slowed down, etc. The version on Live 1975-1985 features Springsteen singing over Roy Bittan's piano.

Bruce taped a performance of this that was played at the funeral of James Berger, a worker in the World Trade Center who helped people get out before he was killed when it collapsed. He was a big Springsteen fan and this was his favorite song. Bruce dedicated it to his sons.

This was also the first track on Springsteen's live album Hammersmith Odeon London 1975, which was recorded on November 18, 1975 during Springsteen's first concert in Europe. It was released on DVD in 2005, and on CD the following year. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

Bed Of Lies Song Chart

This song was debuted by Nicki Minaj during her performance at the November 9, 2014 MTV European Music Awards, where it was the last part of a medley that also featured her hits "Super Bass" and "Anaconda."

The song features Skylar Grey on the hook. The singer-songwriter is no stranger to collaborations with rappers, having crooned on Dr Dre's "I Need a Doctor," Lupe Fiasco's "Words I Never Said" on T.I.'s "New National Anthem." She also wrote the chorus for Eminem and Rihanna's "Love The Way You Lie."

This finds Minaj rapping about a man, who was inattentive in their relationship and took advantage of her. It originated from Grey's demo, which the Queens MC picked up and added her own verses. "I don't know who actually played it for her initially, or the beginning of the song, but she somehow got it in her hands and finished it," Grey told Billboard magazine. "It's really great. She kind of poured her heart out on the verses. I personally think as a fan it's a nice contrast to her other singles on the record. You get to see another side of her."

It sounds like Minaj is addressing on the song Safaree "Scaff Beezy" Samuels, her rumored ex-boyfriend for over ten years. The pair allegedly went their separate ways in the summer of 2014 after a heated argument, which resulted in the Queens MC wrecking his Mercedes-Benz.

An all-red Nicki Minaj performed this song on the December 6, 2014 episode of Saturday Night Live with Skylar Grey. The rapper also delivered a medley of "All Things Go" and "Only," as well as featuring in several comedy sketches, which included an impersonation of Beyoncé .

This is Springsteen's musical autobiography. After touring relentlessly around the Jersey Shore, he finally signed a record deal and got some money. Springsteen called the song, "A kiss-off to everybody who counted you out, put you down, or decided you weren't good enough."

After appearing on the covers of Time and Newsweek in October,1975, Springsteen sometimes changed the words to "Tell your papa I ain't no freak, 'cause I got my picture on the cover of Time and Newsweek."

The audience always went crazy when Springsteen sang: "The record company, Rosie, just gave me a big advance." He got a $25,000 advance from Columbia Records when he signed his first record deal, proving to his father and others who doubted him that he did have a real job.

Springsteen never liked his nickname "The Boss," and sometimes sang: "You can call me Lieutenant, Rosie, but don't ever call me Boss."

Springsteen wrote this to be a live show-stopper. He was inspired by the Soul revues in the '60s where the artists would pour all their energy into their final song, and just when it seemed to be over, keep playing. He knew his audience would remember this when he played it.

The name "E Street" was taken from the name of a road in Belmar, New Jersey, where piano player David Sancious' mother lived. The band needed a name, and one day when they were driving there, Springsteen saw the sign for E Street and thought it should be the name of the band, so his backing group became the E Street Band. Sancious left the band after this album to form a jazz group with E Street drummer Earnest "Boom" Carter.

The music was based on "The Monkey Time," a 1963 hit for Chicago soul singer Major Lance.

This was the first track on Springsteen's second album, The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, which made full use of The E Street Band for the first time. Members of the band played on his first album, but it was mostly Bruce and his guitar.

The characters in the lyrics were based on people Springsteen knew when he was growing up in New Jersey.

Springsteen wrote this after Columbia Records rejected his first attempt at an album, telling him to make some songs that could be played on the radio. He came up with this and "Blinded By The Light."

This was Springsteen's second single. It was released only in the US and did not chart.

The lyrics refer to "Route 88," a road that runs through Ocean County, New Jersey. Springsteen would later sing about "Highway 9" in "Born To Run."

Along with "Blinded By The Light," this was one of 2 songs on Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. featuring Clarence Clemons on saxophone. Springsteen's band didn't have a name when this was recorded. By his next album, they were The E Street Band - named after the street where they used to rehearse.

This has been a popular live song throughout Springsteen's career. He still occasionally plays it live.

Stalley ends his Ohio album with this collaboration with De La Soul. "I actually had the privilege of doing a show with them over in the Czech Republic. We did a festival together," the Ohio rapper recalled to Billboard magazine. "When I got off stage, Posdnuos stopped me and he was like, 'Keep on carrying the tradition.'"

"After that, we bumped into each other again at SXSW. That was around the time I was working on my album," Stalley continued. "I ran into them backstage -- they were actually about to go on with Gorillaz at the Fader Fort. We were talking and I was like, 'Man, I'm working on the album right now.' He was like, 'Send me something if you want us to get on something.' 'Navajo Rugs' was the perfect record for them to jump on."

"That to me is like a classic hip-hop record," he concluded. "You don't hear much of that these days in 2014. I just really wanted one of those posse cut type of tracks where everybody's just displaying their lyricism."
