Jungleland Lyrics

The Rangers had a homecoming
In Harlem late last night
And the Magic Rat drove his sleek machine
Over the Jersey state line
Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge
Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain
The Rat pulls into town, rolls up his pants
Together they take a stab at romance
And disappear down Flamingo Lane

Well, the Maximum Lawmen run down Flamingo
Chasing the Rat and the barefoot girl
And the kids 'round there live just like shadows
Always quiet, holding hands
From the churches to the jails
Tonight all is silence in the world
As we take our stand
Down in Jungleland

The midnight gang's assembled
And picked a rendezvous for the night
They'll meet 'neath that giant Exxon sign
That brings this fair city light
Man, there's an opera out on the Turnpike
There's a ballet being fought out in the alley
Until the local cops, Cherry-Tops, rips this holy night
The street's alive as secret debts are paid
Contacts made, they flash unseen
Kids flash guitars just like switchblades
Hustling for the record machine
The hungry and the hunted
Explode into rock 'n' roll bands
That face off against each other out in the street
Down in Jungleland

In the parking lot the visionaries dress in the latest rage
Inside the backstreet girls are dancing
To the records that the DJ plays
Lonely-hearted lovers struggle in dark corners
Desperate as the night moves on
Just one look and a whisper, and they're gone

Beneath the city, two hearts beat
Soul engines running through a night so tender
In a bedroom locked in whispers
Of soft refusal and then surrender
In the tunnels uptown, the Rat's own dream guns him down
As shots echo down them hallways in the night
No one watches when the ambulance pulls away
Or as the girl shuts out the bedroom light

Outside the street's on fire in a real death waltz
Between what's flesh and what's fantasy
And the poets down here don't write nothing at all
They just stand back and let it all be
And in the quick of a knife, they reach for their moment
And try to make an honest stand
But they wind up wounded, not even dead
Tonight in Jungleland

Jungleland Song Chart
  • This is a poetic tale of life on the streets of New Jersey. Beginning with a simple piano intro, Springsteen goes through a series of abstract images and introduces a series of characters in the song, including Magic Rat and Barefoot Girl. It's a song that led to comparisons with Bob Dylan, notably Dylan's "Desolation Row."

Born To Run came with lyrics to the songs, so listeners could follow along. Reflecting on the album years later, Springsteen singled out the last verse of "Jungleland" as an example of his work that had "a lot of overblown romance, but still contained the seeds of realism."
  • Springsteen and the E Street Band performed this live for over a year before they recorded it. It developed into a longer song with a grand sax solo when it was finally released.
  • This features the piano of Roy Bittan. He joined The E Street Band for Born To Run after playing in orchestra pits on Broadway.
  • This was a highlight of Springsteen's 1999 reunion tour with The E Street Band. The tour went very well, and the band continued to play and record together.
  • Suki Lahav played the violin. She was the first female to play in Springsteen's band, and was with him from September 1974 - March 1975.
  • This is the last song on Born To Run, the breakthrough album for Springsteen. He tested the patience of Columbia Records by taking over a year to record it, refusing to release it until it was just right.
  • Clarence Clemons played a long sax solo on this. With his bright suits and large stature, he was the most notable and popular member of The E Street Band, and when it came to this song, he wasn't demure. "That’s one of the classic saxophone solos in the history of the world, if I may say so myself," he said. Clemons was disappointed when the song was not included on the 1995 Greatest Hits album.
  • As seen in the documentary Wings For Wheels on the 30th anniversary package of the album, one take of the song had a dramatic flamenco-style intro. (thanks, Marshall - Sacramento, CA)
  • Melissa Etheridge said in Rolling Stone magazines 100 Greatest Singers Of All Time issue: "When Bruce Springsteen does those wordless wails, like at the end of 'Jungleland,' that's the definition of rock & roll to me. He uses his whole body when he sings, and he puts out this enormous amount of force and emotion and passion." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Babies Lyrics

    Well it happened years ago,
When you lived on Stanhope Road.
    We listened to your sister,
When she came home from school,
'cause she was two years older,
And she had boys in her room.
We listened outside and heard her.

    Alright.
Well that was alright for a while,
    But soon I wanted more.
I want to see as well as hear,
And so I hid inside her wardrobe.
    And she came round four,
And she was with some kid called David,
From the garage up the road.
I listened outside I heard her.
    Alright.

Oh I want to take you home.
I want to give you children.
You might be my girlfriend, yeah.

When I saw you next day,
    I really couldn't tell,
'cause you might go and tell your mother.
And so you went with Neve,
    And Neve was coming on,
And I thought I heard you laughing,
When his Mum and Dad were gone.
I listened outside, I heard you.
    Alright.

Oh I want to take you home.
I want to give you children.
You might be my girlfriend, yeah.

Well I guess it couldn't last too long.
    I came home one day,
And all her things were gone,
    I fell asleep inside.
    I never heard her come.
And then she opened up her wardrobe,
And I had to get it on.

    Oh, listen
We were on the bed when you came home,
I heard you stop outside the door.
    I know you won't believe it's true,
I only went with her 'cause she looks like you.
Oh I want to take you home.
I want to give you children.
You might be my girlfriend, yeah.

  • The 'Stanhope Road' mentioned in the lyrics are likely referencing a real-life Stanhope Road in the Intake district of Sheffield, where Jarvis Cocker was born and raised.
  • In 2009 on the Sky Arts show Jarvis Cocker: Songbook, Cocker discussed the song's genesis with Will Hodgkinson, noting that it came from drummer Nick Banks messing up some chords on the guitar, and Cocker overhearing this and running with the sounds these gaffed chords had generated to create the song.
  • Like a few other singles in the early 1990s for the band, "Babies" was released in several versions - originally as a 12" single for Gift Records in 1992, before a remixed version was put out on the Sisters EP in 1994 and made it onto their breakthrough album His 'N' Hers in the same year.
  • This tale of voyeurism, with Cocker singing about spying on two sisters, spawned a sequel in the Pulp song "Your Sister's Clothes," which takes place four years later.

    Backstreets Lyrics

One soft infested summer, me and Terry became friends
Trying in vain to breathe the fire we was born in
Catching rides to the outskirts, tying faith between our teeth
Sleeping in that old abandoned beach house, getting wasted in the heat
    And hiding on the backstreets
    Hiding on the backstreets
With a love so hard and filled with defeat
Running for our lives at night on them backstreets

Slow dancing in the dark on the beach at Stockton's Wing
Where desperate lovers park, we sat with the last of the Duke Street Kings
Huddled in our cars, waiting for the bells that ring
In the deep heart of the night they set us loose of everything
To go running on the backstreets
    Running on the backstreets
Terry, you swore we'd live forever
Taking it on them Backstreets together

Endless juke joints and Valentino drag
Where famous dancers scraped the tears up off the street, dressed down in rags
Running into the darkness, some hurt bad, some really dying
At night sometimes it seemed you could hear the whole damn city crying
Blame it on the lies that killed us, blame it on the truth that ran us down
You can blame it all on me, Terry, it don't matter to me now
When the breakdown hit at midnight, there was nothing to say
But I hated him, and I hated you when you went away

Laying here in the dark, you're like an angel on my chest
Just another tramp of hearts crying tears of faithlessness
Remember all the movies, Terry, we'd go see
Trying to learn to walk like the heroes we thought we had to be
And after all this time, to find we're just like all the rest
Stranded in the park and forced to confess
    To hiding on the backstreets
    Hiding on the backstreets
    Where we swore forever friends
On the backstreets until the end

    Hiding on the backstreets

  • This is an intense story about a broken relationship; a tale of losing a lover where the narrator seems more concerned about losing her as a friend. The girl in the song, Terry, is a character Springsteen created based on girls he knew.
  • This is one of several Springsteen songs featuring the first name of a girl who is not a specific real person. Besides Terry, Springsteen has also sung about Mary, Wendy, Sandy and Rosie.
  • "Backstreets" became the name of a popular Springsteen fan magazine that continues to publish.
  • This goes over very well when Springsteen plays it live. The version on the boxed set Live 1975-1985 was taken from a show at The Roxy in 1978.
  • A string section was brought in, but did not make the final mix.

  • Mac Powell wrote this song with Darius Rucker. Like Powell, the former Hootie & the Blowfish frontman has successfully swapped genres and become a country favorite. "I know that he put a lot of work into making that (switch) happen," said the Third Day frontman. "It's a little different in the sense that he wasn't really doing a lot of Hootie & the Blowfish and I'm still doing 100 Third Day dates a year. But it gave me hope that I can try it as well."
  • Powell explained to Taste of Country how the collaboration came about: "We met through that connector that's called Twitter," he said with a laugh. "I'm a fan of his, so as a fan, I can speak directly to him, and I think slowly through some other mutual fans that like my music, they said, 'You guys should get connected,' and I said, 'Well, I'm game.' And he said, 'I'm ready.' So we just started direct messaging each other on Twitter, and came up with a time, and I drove over to Charleston to his place."

"It was very - and I mean this in a good way - it was very business-like," Powell continued. "I got there, and he said, 'Hey, how ya doing, do you need some water? Alright, whatcha got? Let's get to work!" It wasn't until we were done that we got to share some stories and talk and get to know one another a little bit, but during that couple of hours, I showed him an idea and he was like, 'Great, let's get to work on that.'"

"We finished the song in an hour, and then he said, 'Well, what else you got?' And I showed him another idea, and he was like, 'Man, that's great too, let's work on that.' So in a good way, it was very business-like, because we knew we had to get to work," he added. "We didn't have time to shoot the bull. The reason we were there was to write together, and the other stuff would come later on. And it did."

    Thunder Road Lyrics

The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me

You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks

Oh oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road

Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken

There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines rolling on
But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind
    So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win

  • This was the first track on Born To Run, a crucial album for Springsteen. His first two albums sold poorly, and he was in danger of losing his record deal if he did not produce a hit. With songs like this one about escaping to the open road, he connected with an audience that proved extremely loyal.

He considered this song the "invitation" to the album, with the opening notes being the welcome. "Something is opening up," Springsteen said during his 2005 Storytellers appearance. "What I hoped it would be was the sense of a larger life, greater experience, sense of fun, the sense that your personal exploration and possibilities were all lying somewhere inside of you."
  • Springsteen took the title from a 1958 Robert Mitchum movie. He did not see the film, but got the idea from a poster for it in a theater lobby.
  • The vocal sound was inspired by Roy Orbison. Springsteen pays homage to him with the line: "The radio plays Roy Orbison singing for the lonely," a reference to Orbison's 1960 hit, "Only The Lonely."
  • The name of the girl mentioned at the beginning was changed several times. It had been Angelina and Chrissie before Springsteen settled on "Mary's dress waves."
  • The original title was "Wings For Wheels." It began as an outtake called "Glory Road."
  • Cars were very important growing up in New Jersey and show up in many of Springsteen songs. Bruce's first car was a '57 Chevy with orange flames painted on the hood.
  • This is a concert favorite that Springsteen has performed at many of his shows over the years.
  • At one point, Born To Run was going to be a concept album spanning the course of a day, with an acoustic version of this starting the album and the full band version closing it.
  • Springsteen's friend and future manager, Jon Landau, convinced him to record this at The Record Plant in New York instead of the low-budget studio he was using. Springsteen's current manager, Mike Appel, resented Landau's influence and would file a lawsuit that kept Springsteen from recording for 3 years.
  • Since the band didn't know the song very well, Springsteen used a version with just him at the piano to open a series of shows at The Bottom Line in New York City in 1975. Sponsored by a New York radio station, the disc jockey, Dave Herman, apologized on the air for not playing enough Springsteen the morning after the first show.
  • On November 3, 1980, Springsteen kicked off his tour to support the album in Ann Arbor, Michigan. For the encore, Bob Seger, who is to Michigan what Springsteen is to New Jersey, joined him onstage to perform this.
  • Has been performed live many different ways: with the full band, solo with guitar, solo with piano, slowed down, etc. The version on Live 1975-1985 features Springsteen singing over Roy Bittan's piano.
  • Bruce taped a performance of this that was played at the funeral of James Berger, a worker in the World Trade Center who helped people get out before he was killed when it collapsed. He was a big Springsteen fan and this was his favorite song. Bruce dedicated it to his sons.
  • This was also the first track on Springsteen's live album Hammersmith Odeon London 1975, which was recorded on November 18, 1975 during Springsteen's first concert in Europe. It was released on DVD in 2005, and on CD the following year. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Bed Of Lies Lyrics

Do you ever think of me when you lie?
Lie down in your bed, your bed of lies
And I knew better than to look in your eyes
They only pretend you would be mine
And oh how you made me believe
You had me caught in every web that you weaved
But do you ever think of me when you lie?
Lie down in your bed, your bed of lies

You could never make eye contact
Everything you got was based off of my contacts
    You a fraud, but I'mma remain icon-stat
Balenciagas on my boots with the python strap
You was caught up in the rush, and you was caught up in the thrill of it
You was with me way before I hit a quarter mill' in it
Put you in the crib and you ain't never pay a bill in it
I was killin' it, man, you got me poppin' pills in it
I told Baby hit you, I said this nigga buggin'
'Cause I was doing it for us, I told 'em fuck the public
Couldn't believe that I was home alone, contemplating
Overdosin', no more coastin', no more toastin' over oceans
They say you don't know what you got 'til it's gone
They say that your darkest hour come before your dawn
But there was something that I should've asked all along
    I'mma ask on the song

Do you ever think of me when you lie?
Lie down in your bed, your bed of lies
And I knew better than to look in your eyes
They only pretend you would be mine
And you know how you made me believe
You had me caught in every web that you weaved
But do you ever think of me when you lie?
Lie down in your bed, your bed of lies

I just figured if you saw me, if you looked in my eyes
You'd remember our connection and be freed from the lies
I just figured I was something that you couldn't replace
But there was just a blank stare and I couldn't relate
    I just couldn't understand and I couldn't defend
What we had, what we shared, and I couldn't pretend
When the tears roll down it's like you ain't even notice 'em
If you had a heart, I was hoping that you would show it some
What the fuck you really telling me? What you telling me?
I could tell you lying, get the fuck out, don't yell at me
    I ain't mean to cut you, I ain't wanna catch a felony
This ain't How To Be A Player, you ain't Bill Bellamy
They say you don't know what you got 'til it's gone
They say that your darkest hour come before your dawn
But there was something that I should've asked, all along
    I'mma ask on the song

So does she know I've been in that bed before?
A thousand count, and not a single thread of truth
If I was just another girl
Then I'm ashamed to say that I'm not over you
There's one thing I need to know
So call me when you're not so busy just thinking of yourself

Do you ever think of me when you lie?
Lie down in your bed, your bed of lies
And I knew better than to look in your eyes
They only pretend you would be mine
And oh how you made me believe

  • This song was debuted by Nicki Minaj during her performance at the November 9, 2014 MTV European Music Awards, where it was the last part of a medley that also featured her hits "Super Bass" and "Anaconda."
  • The song features Skylar Grey on the hook. The singer-songwriter is no stranger to collaborations with rappers, having crooned on Dr Dre's "I Need a Doctor," Lupe Fiasco's "Words I Never Said" on T.I.'s "New National Anthem." She also wrote the chorus for Eminem and Rihanna's "Love The Way You Lie."
  • This finds Minaj rapping about a man, who was inattentive in their relationship and took advantage of her. It originated from Grey's demo, which the Queens MC picked up and added her own verses. "I don't know who actually played it for her initially, or the beginning of the song, but she somehow got it in her hands and finished it," Grey told Billboard magazine. "It's really great. She kind of poured her heart out on the verses. I personally think as a fan it's a nice contrast to her other singles on the record. You get to see another side of her."
  • It sounds like Minaj is addressing on the song Safaree "Scaff Beezy" Samuels, her rumored ex-boyfriend for over ten years. The pair allegedly went their separate ways in the summer of 2014 after a heated argument, which resulted in the Queens MC wrecking his Mercedes-Benz.
  • An all-red Nicki Minaj performed this song on the December 6, 2014 episode of Saturday Night Live with Skylar Grey. The rapper also delivered a medley of "All Things Go" and "Only," as well as featuring in several comedy sketches, which included an impersonation of Beyoncé .

  • This is Springsteen's musical autobiography. After touring relentlessly around the Jersey Shore, he finally signed a record deal and got some money. Springsteen called the song, "A kiss-off to everybody who counted you out, put you down, or decided you weren't good enough."
  • Springsteen considers this the best love song he ever wrote. It's proof that a love song does not have to be slow or sappy.
  • This is Springsteen's most popular live song. It was the last song before the encore at most of his shows from 1973-1984. In 1999 during his E-street Band reunion tour, Springsteen played 15 sold out shows at the Contential Airlines Arena (later known as the Izod centre), and he used this song to close out the final show of the stand. (thanks, Kyle - Belleville, Canada)
  • This became very popular in England when British TV aired a clip of Springsteen performing this at a concert in Phoenix in 1978.
  • The live film clip of this is the closest thing Springsteen had to a music video until he started making them in 1984, starting with "Dancing In The Dark."
  • The first time Springsteen performed this song was at a concert at Joe's Place in Boston on January 5, 1974.
  • This was one of the first songs to showcase Clarence Clemons on sax. With his bright suits and imposing size, he quickly became the most popular member of the E Street Band.
  • After appearing on the covers of Time and Newsweek in October,1975, Springsteen sometimes changed the words to "Tell your papa I ain't no freak, 'cause I got my picture on the cover of Time and Newsweek."
  • The audience always went crazy when Springsteen sang: "The record company, Rosie, just gave me a big advance." He got a $25,000 advance from Columbia Records when he signed his first record deal, proving to his father and others who doubted him that he did have a real job.
  • Springsteen never liked his nickname "The Boss," and sometimes sang: "You can call me Lieutenant, Rosie, but don't ever call me Boss."
  • Springsteen wrote this to be a live show-stopper. He was inspired by the Soul revues in the '60s where the artists would pour all their energy into their final song, and just when it seemed to be over, keep playing. He knew his audience would remember this when he played it.

    (Hey hey, Oh no no)

Her light is as loud as as many ambulances
As it takes to save a savior (whoa whoa whoa)

She floats through the room on a big balloon
Some say, "She's such a fake"
That her love is made up
    No, no no no

Let's have another toast to the Girl Almighty
    Let's pray we stay young
    Stay made of lightning

    Am I the only,
    Only believer?

    There's something happening here

    The only
    Only believer

    (There's something happening here,
I hope you feel what I'm feeling too)

I get down, I get down, I get down
    On my knees for ya
I get down, I get down, I get down
    On my knees
I get down on my knees for you

Her light is as loud as as many ambulances

    No, no no no

Let's have another toast to the girl almighty

    Let's pray we stay young
    Stay made of lightning

    Am I the only,
    Only believer?

    There's something happening here

    The only
    Only believer

    (There's something happening here,
I hope you feel what I'm feeling too)

I get down, I get down, I get down
    On my knees for ya

I get down, I get down, I get down
    On my knees
I get down on my knees for you

The E Street Shuffle Song Chart
  • The name "E Street" was taken from the name of a road in Belmar, New Jersey, where piano player David Sancious' mother lived. The band needed a name, and one day when they were driving there, Springsteen saw the sign for E Street and thought it should be the name of the band, so his backing group became the E Street Band. Sancious left the band after this album to form a jazz group with E Street drummer Earnest "Boom" Carter.
  • The music was based on "The Monkey Time," a 1963 hit for Chicago soul singer Major Lance.
  • This was the first track on Springsteen's second album, The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, which made full use of The E Street Band for the first time. Members of the band played on his first album, but it was mostly Bruce and his guitar.
  • The characters in the lyrics were based on people Springsteen knew when he was growing up in New Jersey.
  • Springsteen: "I wanted to invent a dance with no exact steps. It was just the dance you did every day and every night to get by."
  • Bette Midler covered this.
