  • Indianapolis singer-songwriter Tiara Thomas first broke through when she featured on Wale's 2013 hit single "Bad." She signed in 2013 with producer Rico Love's Division 1 record label in a joint deal with Interscope Geffen A&M. This is Thomas' first single to be released from her debut solo album, The Bad Influence.
  • Thomas wrote the song with Rico Love when they were in Miami. She recalled to Artist Direct : "We did a week in the studio working. I sat down at the keyboard and played a little melody. We put some drums on it. We put the writing on there. It happened really organically."

"I remember Rico left the studio that night," Thomas continued. "There were like 16 bars for the rap, and I think I spent all night in the studio writing that rap. He came in the next day and listened to it, and we were both like, 'This is dope.'

"It sounds really different," she concluded. "I wanted my first single to be something that sounds different from all the other things on the radio. I wanted people to hear me rap and sing as well on my first look."
  • Thomas explained the song's meaning: "It's just a fun song talking about girls who use their money to get guys - not every girl though," she said.

"They just want one night," Thomas added. "It's just a fun song. It's not promiscuous. I'm not saying, 'Go out and have one-night stands with everyone.' It's what a lot of girls think sometimes."
  • The song's music clip is based on Thomas' favorite movie, the 1996 crime action flick, Set It Off. "I didn't want the video to follow the lyrics. I hate when the visual is really literal with the words of the song. I wanted my first video to be really cinematic," she explained. "We came up with a storyline that fit so we could use the Set It Off idea. It was a lot of fun. It turned out really good."

  • This is one of Springsteen's favorites. He almost always plays it at the impromptu bar gigs he is famous for on the Jersey Shore.

In concert, Springsteen often extends this to over 10 minutes. Perhaps the most compact version he ever played was at halftime of the 2009 Super Bowl, when he squeezed 4 songs into a 12 minute set.
  • Springsteen: "The first verse actually happened, the second verse mostly happened, the third verse, of course, is happening now."
  • Originally, this contained a 4th verse which mentioned Springsteen's father working on the Ford assembly line.
  • Springsteen performed this June 25, 1993 on the last David Letterman Show on NBC. Letterman is a huge fan but had never had Springsteen on. Bruce did go on the show a few more times after it moved to CBS.
  • This was one of 7 US top 10 hits on Born In The U.S.A. The band first recorded it in 1982, but it was not released until the album came out.
  • The video was directed by John Sayles, who also did Springsteen's promos for "Born In The U.S.A." and "I'm On Fire." In the video, Springsteen plays a cross between the character telling the story and the guy he's singing about. Julianne Phillips, who was Springsteen's wife at the time, appears in the video, as does Patti Scialfa, who later became the next Mrs. Springsteen.
  • On the day Springsteen released his album The Rising, he played a concert on The Today Show. This was the only song he played that was not on the new album.

    Luck Be A Lady Lyrics

    They call you lady luck
But there is room for doubt
At times you have a very un-lady-like way
    Of running out

Your on this date with me
    The pickin's have been lush
And yet before the evening is over
You might give me the brush

    You might forget your manners
    You might refuse to stay
And so the best that I can do is pray

    Luck Be A Lady tonight
    Luck be a lady tonight
Luck if you've been a lady to begin with
    Luck be a lady tonight

    Luck let a gentleman see
Just how nice a dame you can be
I know the way you've treated other guys you've been with
Luck be a lady with me

A lady never leaves her escort
It isn't fair, it isn't nice
A lady doesn't wander all over the room
And blow on some other guys dice

    Lets keep this party polite
Never get out of my sight
Stick with me baby, I'm the guy that you came in with
    Luck be a lady tonight

A lady never flirts with strangers
    She'd have a heart, she'd be nice
A lady doesn't wander all over the room
And blow on some other guys dice

    Lets keep this party polite
Never get out of my sight
Stick with me baby, I'm the guy that you came in with
    Luck be a lady tonight

  • Written by Frank Loesser in 1950 for the musical Guys and Dolls, this song was first performed onstage by Robert Alda as gambler Sky Masterson. Though Frank Sinatra would seem to be the obvious choice to play the lead role in the 1955 film version, he was assigned to Nathan Detroit, while Brando snagged the part of Masterson.

"Frank always lamented that he didn't have the Marlon Brando role, which he should have had because the songs were more adaptable to Frank. Brando couldn't really sing," Charles Pignone, Senior Vice President of Frank Sinatra Enterprises, explained in a Songfacts interview.

In fact, Sinatra was instrumental in adapting the song: "When you hear 'Luck Be A Lady' and how it's done specifically in the play, Frank was the one that told Billy May how to arrange it and changed the tempo a bit so it would be different. Of course, it fits Frank like a glove," Pignone added.
  • Sinatra included the song in his concert repertoire and was gracious when referring to the role he lost to Brando. He would introduce the number by saying Brando was "not a great singer, but probably the greatest actor ever."
  • Sinatra recorded this as a duet with Chrissie Hynde for his 1994 album, Duets II.
  • This was prominently featured in the 1993 comedy Mrs. Doubtfire as Robin Williams first dons his disguise as a woman.
  • Sky Masterson had his money and his love life staked on a bet during "Luck Be a Lady," accompanied by an elaborate production number set in a sewer. But the musical's choreographer, Michael Kidd, had to convince director George S. Kaufman first. He recalled (as quoted in Susan Loesser's A Most Remarkable Fella):

"Now George was a very acerbic character. He examined everything with a dry sense of humor. He didn't particularly like musicals. When you did a song he would look at his watch. He said, 'Mike, I don't understand. How are you going to do a dance here? Do you mean to tell me we're going to have a scene where these tough gamblers will be standing around the stage while a bunch of dancers get up and do a dance?'

I said, 'I'll incorporate all the members of the cast into the crap game. I'll have Nathan taking a cut of every pot, I'll have Big Julie rolling. I'll have all the different characters participate.' George said, 'Well, I can't see it. It beats me.'

So I worked out the dance and came to show it to everybody, knowing that George was dead set against it. We did the number and George sat there with no sign of emotion. When it was over he turned to me and said, 'Mike, I hardly have to tell you you've done something very remarkable here. Okay, let's go on.' That was the biggest accolade you could get from George."
  • Loesser clashed with Sinatra during the making of the Guys and Dolls movie as Sinatra insisted on singing Nathan Detroit's numbers in his smooth signature style rather than adopt the gritty, tough-as-nails swagger Loesser had envisioned. According to Loesser's daughter, Susan, the songwriter refused to see the film and he and Sinatra never spoke again.

  • Like many Springsteen songs, this one contains a girl and a car, but it's filled with more frustration than possibility as he sings about getting the cold shoulder from the lady, who keeps knocking him "down."
  • This was the sixth of seven Top 10 US singles on the Born In The U.S.A. album. The album had been out for over a year by the time it was released as a single.

    I’m a Soldier of Fortune
    An ambassador of pain
I had the world on a string
Then I threw it all away

    I’m a prince of illusions
All spinning around in my brain
    There’s a mockingbird calling
And this is what he’s saying

    Girl stop rockin’
    You’re driving me insane
I’m going out of my mind
And I won’t be back again

I was driving down the street
And I saw you in the rain
    Now it’s breaking my heart
And I want you back again

    I was stirred and shaken
    Had a miracle in mind
In the heat of the night
    I left it all behind

    Girl stop rockin’
    You’re driving me insane
I’m going out of my mind
And I won’t be back again

    I’m a soldier of fortune
    An ambassador of pain
I had the world on a string
And I threw it all away

    Girl stop rockin’
    You’re driving me insane

  • Bryan Ferry collaborated with Johnny Marr on this contemplative tune. He told All Songs Considered hosts Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton about working with the former Smiths guitarist. "Johnny is a very good spirit. I mean, he's, he's got a true rock and roll spirit. He lives the music and he's fantastic," he said.

"[This song has] a very sort of tender sort of bit of guitar, really," Ferry added, "which started with this riff that Johnny was playing in the studio. And we built it up from that."

    No Surrender Lyrics

Well, we bursted out of class
Had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a three-minute record, baby
Than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear the neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes
    And follow your dreams down

    [Chorus:]
Well, we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
    No retreat, baby, No Surrender
Like soldiers in the winter's night
    With a vow to defend
    No retreat, baby, no surrender

Well, now young faces grow sad and old
And hearts of fire grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind
Now I'm ready to grow young again
And hear your sister's voice calling us home
    Across the open yards
Well maybe we'll cut someplace of own
With these drums and these guitars

'Cause we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
    No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers in the stormy night
    With a vow to defend
    No retreat, baby, no surrender

Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
You say it ain't ours anymore to win
    I want to sleep beneath
Peaceful skies in my lover's bed
With a wide open country in my eyes
And these romantic dreams in my head

Once we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
    No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers in a stormy night
    With a vow to defend
    No retreat, baby, no surrender

    Ohhhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhhh
    Ohhhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhhh

  • Springsteen wrote this about the inspirational power of rock music. It came to represent his friendship with members of his band.
  • This was the last song chosen for the album. E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt had to convince Springsteen to put it on. Van Zandt had left the band, but remained close to Springsteen and would eventually play with him again.
  • The original title was "Brothers Under The Bridges."
  • Part of the chorus provided the title for Jean-Claude Van Damme's first movie, No Retreat, No Surrender.
  • Springsteen often performed a slower version of this at concerts. The version on the box set Live 1975-1985 is a slower, solo performance.

  • The B-Side of the 2014 single, "Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)," this song gets its title from a 17th century English play called 'Tis Pity She's a Whore.

A tragedy written by John Ford, 'Tis Pity She's a Whore was first performed around 1630. Ford's failure to condemn his protagonist's incestuous passion for his sister made the play one of the most controversial works in English literature.
  • Bowie said the song was inspired by the destruction of World War I. "If Vorticists wrote rock music it might have sounded like this," he said, referring to the short-lived modernist movement in British art and poetry that emerged just before the war began.

    90 to Nothing Song Chart
  • This is a song from Mac Powell's sophomore country solo album, Southpaw. The Alabama native is best known for fronting Christian rockers Third Day and was asked by Taste of Country if the writing process is different for his Nashville records in terms of the kind of subject matter he can consider. "Absolutely," Powell replied. "Doing Christian music, it's such a serious subject, and so there's so many songs that are serious. And it's hopeful, and it's encouraging, but what's so much fun about country music is being free to write these stories, to be just kind of able to make up stories."

Powell added that this song is, "just basically a girl broke my heart, and she's coming back to town so I'm leaving kind of story."

"Well, that's not really something that's true in my life, but I get to kind of play this character, It's like writing for a movie or TV show," he continued. "I get to play this character and totally make up this story, and that's fun. And it's not that it's not done in Christian music, but it's not done as much. In country music, that's kind of what it is."
  • The song is a collaboration with country music singer Travis Tritt, whom Powell first met many years previously. "People have told me that we have similar voices and I sound a little bit like him, when I know that actually he's a much better singer than I am," he explained laughing. "He's amazing."
  • Powell told Taste of Country how he penned the song with Tritt. "We met for dinner. We live about 20 minutes apart — I tell people there's something in the water, that's why we sound alike — but we hit it off, and it was great for me to ask some questions, bounce some ideas off of him and hear some stories from him about his past and his history in country music. So we kept saying, 'Hey, we've got to write some time,' and finally when it was time for me to go into the studio, I just texted him — I think it was only a day or two before — and I said, 'Hey, I know you're super busy, but I'm gonna be in the studio if you want to drop by and say hey, or play or sing on the record, or write some music. We're gonna be here.'"

"So he actually came over two days in a row, and we sat down and developed a couple of ideas that I had, and they ended up making the record," Powell continued. "And he actually ended up playing on the record, so it was a blast. Just to even hear him singing in the studio was amazing."

What Happened To Your Band Lyrics

Tonight, I feel like I just wanna let it go
And hang with a crowd that I don't even know
So I don't lose my mind
Back home, the words that I hear are so predictable
They fuck with my mind, make me miserable
    They gotta know first hand
    They wanna understand
    What Happened To Your Band?
    What are your future plans?
    I'm like your biggest fan
Where'd you go, I've been lost without you, baby
Time moves slow, I ain't seen you on the TV lately
I walk through the neighbourhood where I used to live
And the only thing that people ask me is
    What happened to your band?
    What happened to your band?
    What happened to your band?
    What are your future plans?
    I'm like your biggest fan
Where'd you go, I've been lost without you, baby

    Born In The U.S.A. Lyrics

Born In The U.S.A. Song Chart
  • Springsteen wrote this about the problems Vietnam veterans encountered when they returned to America. Vietnam was the first war the US didn't win, and while veterans of other wars received a hero's welcome, those who fought in Vietnam were mostly ignored when they returned to the states.
  • The original title was "Vietnam." The director Paul Schrader sent Springsteen a script for a movie called Born In The U.S.A., about a rock band struggling with life and religion. This gave Bruce the idea for the new title. Unfortunately for Schrader, when he was finally ready to make the movie in 1985, the title "Born In The U.S.A." was too associated with the song. Springsteen helped him out however, providing the song "Light Of Day," which became the new title for Schrader's movie and the feature song in the film.
  • This is one of the most misinterpreted songs ever. Most people thought it was a patriotic song about American pride, when it actually cast a shameful eye on how America treated its Vietnam veterans. Springsteen considers it one of his best songs, but it bothers him that it is so widely misinterpreted. With the rollicking rhythm, enthusiastic chorus, and patriotic album cover, it is easy to think this has more to do with American pride than Vietnam shame.
  • This is the first song and title track to one of the most popular albums ever - Born In The U.S.A. sold over 18 million copies. The single was released in England as a double A-side with "I'm On Fire."
It was the first song Springsteen wrote for the album. He first recorded it on January 3, 1982 on the tape that became his album Nebraska later that year.
  • While campaigning in New Jersey in 1984, Ronald Reagan said in his speech: "America's future rests in a thousand dreams inside your hearts. It rests in the message of hope in songs so many young Americans admire: New Jersey's own Bruce Springsteen. And helping you make those dreams come true is what this job of mine is all about."

Springsteen talked about this in a 2005 interview with National Public Radio. Said Bruce: "This was when the Republicans first mastered the art of co-opting anything and everything that seemed fundamentally American, and if you were on the other side, you were somehow unpatriotic. I make American music, and I write about the place I live and who I am in my lifetime. Those are the things I'm going to struggle for and fight for."
Speaking of how the song was misinterpreted, he added: "In my songs, the spiritual part, the hope part is in the choruses. The blues, and your daily realities are in the details of the verses. The spiritual comes out in the choruses, which I got from Gospel music and the church."
  • Chrysler offered Springsteen $12 million to use this in an ad campaign with Bruce. Springsteen turned them down so they used "The Pride Is Back" by Kenny Rogers instead. Springsteen has never let his music be used to sell products.
  • This song inspired the famous Annie Leibowitz photo of Springsteen's butt against the backdrop of an American flag. Bruce had to be convinced to use it as the album's cover. Some people thought it depicted Springsteen urinating on the flag.
Looking back on the cover in a 1996 interview with NME, Springsteen said: "I was probably working out my own insecurities, y'know? That particular image is probably the only time I look back over pictures of the band and it feels like a caricature to me."
  • According to Max Weinberg, Bruce attempted to do the song in a rockabilly trio style, with a country beat.
  • The drum solo towards the end of the song was completely improvised. Drummer Max Weinberg said that the band was recording in an oval-shaped studio, with the musicians separated into different parts. Springsteen, at the front, suddenly turned towards Weinberg (at the back) after singing and waved his hands in the air frantically to signal drumming. Weinberg then nailed it.
  • Eight minutes were cut from the song, which Max Weinberg said went on into a psychedelic jam. (thanks, Marshall - Sacramento, CA, for above 3)
  • Bruce performed solo, acoustic versions on his tours in 1996 and 1999. He wanted to make sure the audience understood the song.
  • Springsteen allowed notorious rap group The 2 Live Crew to sample this for their song "Banned In The U.S.A." in 1990, after the group was arrested for performing songs with obscene lyrics. Bruce felt they had a constitutional right to say whatever they wanted in their songs.
  • This was recorded live in the studio in three takes.
  • Richard "Cheech" Marin parodied this in the song "Born In East L.A.," which came from his 1987 movie of the same name. Sample lyrics:
"Next thing I know, I'm in a foreign land
People talkin' so fast, I couldn't understand." (thanks, Margaret - Buellton, CA)
  • Born In The U.S.A. was the first CD manufactured in the United States for commercial release. It was pressed when CBS Records opened its CD manufacturing plant in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1984. Discs previously had been imported from Japan.
  • The children's TV show Sesame Street reworked this as "Barn In The U.S.A.," credited to Bruce Stringbean and the S. Street Band. Check out the album cover in Song Images. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 2)
  • Springsteen's fist-pumping recitations of this lament for the plight of the Vietnam War veterans during his 1984-85 Born In The USA tour contributed to its mis-reading as a patriotic song by US right-wingers. Critic Greil Marcus wrote: "Clearly the key to the enormous explosion of Bruce's popularity is the misunderstanding… He is a tribute to the fact that people hear what they want to hear."
  • The video was directed by John Sayles, who wrote the screenplay for the 1978 movie Piranha and later directed the films Lone Star, Honeydripper and Eight Men Out . Most of the video is footage of Springsteen performing the song in concert - he wore the same outfit for a few consecutive shows so Sayles could get the shots (Springsteen didn't want to lip-synch). Other footage came from a Vietnamese neighborhood in Los Angeles and Springsteen's old stomping ground, Asbury Park, New Jersey. The video stuck to the true meaning of the song, with shots of factory workers, regular folks walking the streets, soldiers training for combat, and a line of guys waiting for payday loans. Sayles said in the book I Want My MTV: "It was right around the time that Ronald Reagan had co-opted 'Born In The U.S.A.' and Reagan, his policies were everything that the song was complaining about. I think some of the energy of the performance came from Bruce deciding, 'I'm going to claim this song back from Reagan.'"
  • This was not the first hit song to tell a story about a Vietnam veteran's return to America. In 1982, The Charlie Daniels Band took "Still in Saigon" to #22 in America. That song was written by Dan Daley, who felt that only two artists were right for it. "Since it was such a political song, the strategy was there were only two artists that it would make sense to give it to," Daley told us . "One was Bruce Springsteen and the other was Charlie Daniels. Because both had made public statements in support of Vietnam veterans."
