Jersey Girl Song Chart

Bruce Springsteen covered this song in concert on many occasions. He started performing it at a series of shows in 1981 at the new Meadowlands arena in New Jersey. Even though he did not write this, Springsteen feels the character is the same guy from his earlier songs "Sandy" and "Rosalita," who has now grown up and got the Jersey Girl.

Springsteen released this as the B-side of "Cover Me" in 1984. Two years later, he used the same version, taken from a show at The Meadowlands, on his boxed set Live 1975-1985. This is one of the few cover songs Springsteen released. Usually it was other artists performing his songs.

In 1981, Waits joined Springsteen on stage for this at a show in Los Angeles.

Despite her large cult following and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame career (she was inducted in 2007), this was Patti Smith's only hit, making it an anomaly in her discography, which was aimed at a far more narrow audience.

For many not familiar with Smith's career or the history of Punk, this is the only recognizable song of hers. The producers of the 2013 movie CBGB, played to this audience when they portrayed singing this song at the famous club in 1975 - two years before she recorded it and a year before it was written. In the film, Smith was played by Mickey Sumner, who is Sting's daughter.

Bruce Springsteen wrote this song. He gave it to Patti Smith in 1976 because he thought it would suit her voice. He was also in a legal battle with his manager, Mike Appel, that kept him from recording for almost three years.

Springsteen gave this to Smith with the music and the chorus. She filled in the lyrics one night while waiting for her husband to call.

Springsteen joined Smith on Stage several times in 1976-1977, while legal battles kept him from recording.

Smith bought her dad a new 1978 Cordoba with the money she made from this.

Smith's producer on the Easter album was Jimmy Iovine, who would go on to great things as a producer and entrepreneur, but was still getting started in the business at the time. "Because The Night" was his first hit as a producer, and he credits Bruce Springsteen for granting him the opportunity. Iovine had worked on Bruce's 1975 Born To Run album, and Springsteen have him the song to deliver to Smith. This "really launched by career," Iovine said.

Smith was hesitant to use a song written by someone else, but changed her mind when she heard Springsteen's demo.

After this song became a hit, Smith dismissed it as "commercial sh-t." She admitted that it was a well-written song, but didn't want it to define her career. (thanks, Adam - Dewsbury, England)

As The Boss was struggling to finish this song, he agreed to Jimmy Iovine's request that Patti Smith could complete it. Springsteen explained why to Mojo magazine August 2010: "It was a love song and I really wasn't writing them at the time. I wrote these very hidden love songs like For You, or Sandy, maybe even Thunder Road, but they were always coming from a different angle. My love songs were never straight out, they weren't direct. That song needed directness and at the time I was uncomfortable with it. I was hunkered down in my samurai position. Darkness… was about stripping away everything - relationships, everything - and getting down to the core of who you were. So that song is the great missing song from Darkness On The Edge. I could not have finished it as good as she did. She was in the midst of her love affair with Fred 'Sonic' Smith and she had it all right there on her sleeve. She put it down in a way that was just quite wonderful."

This song finds Gomez opening up about her relationship troubles with on-again, off-again boyfriend Justin Bieber. "I think the biggest problem I had this year, even with [Justin], is identity… I was trying to figure out what I'm doing. It was the first time I was constantly being kicked down," she told Ryan Seacrest regarding the scrutiny they faced. "I made some decisions that weren't great. So did he. We went through that to only make us better."

The singer told Ryan Seacrest the autobiographical cut and its accompanying video was approved by Bieber himself. "He thought it was beautiful. I think it was really hard. I think he was a little jealous of the video guy at first," she joked adding. "Honestly, music is an expression, and if you will be that voice for these girls, there are some people that feel this. This is universal."

Gomez also played the song to her good friend Taylor Swift before revealing it to the world. "So she came over to the house, and I played it. She had headphones in, and she watched the video, and then she just looked at me, then she looked back, and then played it three times over and over again," she recalled. "And I'm like, 'I want to know,' and she was like, 'Oh my God. This is amazing. I'm so excited for you.'"

The song title is a phrase that was first coined by Emily Dickinson in 1862 as part of the opening lines of a letter she wrote to a Mrs. Mary Bowles. They were penned by the poet to her friend on an occasion that Mr. Bowles had to travel away from his wife. ("When the Best is gone- I know that other things are not of consequence - the heart wants what it wants - or else it does not care").

The phrase is most closely associated with Woody Allen during a 2001 interview with Time magazine about his relationship with girlfriend Mia Farrow's daughter Soon-Yi. "The heart wants what it wants" was the director/actor's explanation for his behavior.

The emotional video was filmed over a year before the single was released. It opens with a recording of Gomez having an emotional breakdown about her relationship with Bieber, confessing, "You make me feel crazy, you make feel like it's my fault. I was in pain."

"They taped the mic underneath the table when I was shooting the video," Gomez told Ryan Seacrest. "And I had shot the video over a year ago. So, in that state -- where I was in that place emotionally -- I went in and I went into the room by myself, and I looked at the actual mirror in the music video, and I had a conversation [with] myself to every question I had in my mind in that moment: 'Wow, this feeling changes everything and you can't help it.'"

Like many hits of this time, a word in the title is stretched out when it is sung in the chorus. In this case, Gomez does an electronic stutter, singing "The heart wants what it wa-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ants." This is a good way to create an earworm, as the vocal becomes far more memorable. Other songs where you can hear this technique include "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift ("That's what they don't see-ee-ee") and "Lips Are Movin" by Meghan Trainor ("You can buy me diamond earrings and deny-eye-eye").

Selena Gomez's performance of the song during the 2014 American Music Awards was powerful and emotionally intense. She recalled her rendition to KAMP-FM's Carson Daly: "That's actually the only time that I've ever performed that song. I think it was a moment in my life where I felt a little attacked publicly a lot, and I was kinda dealing with some stuff," Gomez said. "I felt like it was my time and opportunity to be honest for the first time and not pretend that everything's OK and just kind of get that out there. And now I feel like a huge weight has lifted off of me."

Fire Song Chart

Springsteen wrote this for Elvis Presley, his idol growing up. He sent Elvis a demo of it in 1977, but Presley died soon after. The song would have fit well for Elvis, as it's about a passionate lust a couple has for each other.

Springsteen wrote this while he was waiting out litigation with his former manager. He couldn't record his own songs, but still did plenty of writing.

The singer Robert Gordon, who was a friend of Springsteen, was the first to record this - he released it on his 1978 album Fresh Fish Special. The song became a hit when the Pointer Sisters recorded it later in 1978 at the suggestion of their producer Richard Perry, their version hitting #2 in the US.

While many people who heard this song knew it had hit potential, Springsteen did not release it until 1986, as he was more concerned with the continuity of his albums than making hit records. Springsteen's version was included on his boxed set, Live 1975-1985. It was released as a single when the set came out.

Springsteen considered using this on Darkness On The Edge Of Town and The River, but decided it did not fit the mood of either album.

Indianapolis singer-songwriter Tiara Thomas first broke through when she featured on Wale's 2013 hit single "Bad." She signed in 2013 with producer Rico Love's Division 1 record label in a joint deal with Interscope Geffen A&M. This is Thomas' first single to be released from her debut solo album, The Bad Influence.

Thomas wrote the song with Rico Love when they were in Miami. She recalled to Artist Direct : "We did a week in the studio working. I sat down at the keyboard and played a little melody. We put some drums on it. We put the writing on there. It happened really organically."

"I remember Rico left the studio that night," Thomas continued. "There were like 16 bars for the rap, and I think I spent all night in the studio writing that rap. He came in the next day and listened to it, and we were both like, 'This is dope.'

"It sounds really different," she concluded. "I wanted my first single to be something that sounds different from all the other things on the radio. I wanted people to hear me rap and sing as well on my first look."

Thomas explained the song's meaning: "It's just a fun song talking about girls who use their money to get guys - not every girl though," she said.

"They just want one night," Thomas added. "It's just a fun song. It's not promiscuous. I'm not saying, 'Go out and have one-night stands with everyone.' It's what a lot of girls think sometimes."

The song's music clip is based on Thomas' favorite movie, the 1996 crime action flick, Set It Off. "I didn't want the video to follow the lyrics. I hate when the visual is really literal with the words of the song. I wanted my first video to be really cinematic," she explained. "We came up with a storyline that fit so we could use the Set It Off idea. It was a lot of fun. It turned out really good."

This is one of Springsteen's favorites. He almost always plays it at the impromptu bar gigs he is famous for on the Jersey Shore.

In concert, Springsteen often extends this to over 10 minutes. Perhaps the most compact version he ever played was at halftime of the 2009 Super Bowl, when he squeezed 4 songs into a 12 minute set.

Springsteen: "The first verse actually happened, the second verse mostly happened, the third verse, of course, is happening now."

Originally, this contained a 4th verse which mentioned Springsteen's father working on the Ford assembly line.

Springsteen performed this June 25, 1993 on the last David Letterman Show on NBC. Letterman is a huge fan but had never had Springsteen on. Bruce did go on the show a few more times after it moved to CBS.

This was one of 7 US top 10 hits on Born In The U.S.A. The band first recorded it in 1982, but it was not released until the album came out.

The video was directed by John Sayles, who also did Springsteen's promos for "Born In The U.S.A." and "I'm On Fire." In the video, Springsteen plays a cross between the character telling the story and the guy he's singing about. Julianne Phillips, who was Springsteen's wife at the time, appears in the video, as does Patti Scialfa, who later became the next Mrs. Springsteen.

On the day Springsteen released his album The Rising, he played a concert on The Today Show. This was the only song he played that was not on the new album.

Written by Frank Loesser in 1950 for the musical Guys and Dolls, this song was first performed onstage by Robert Alda as gambler Sky Masterson. Though Frank Sinatra would seem to be the obvious choice to play the lead role in the 1955 film version, he was assigned to Nathan Detroit, while Brando snagged the part of Masterson.

"Frank always lamented that he didn't have the Marlon Brando role, which he should have had because the songs were more adaptable to Frank. Brando couldn't really sing," Charles Pignone, Senior Vice President of Frank Sinatra Enterprises, explained in a Songfacts interview.

In fact, Sinatra was instrumental in adapting the song: "When you hear 'Luck Be A Lady' and how it's done specifically in the play, Frank was the one that told Billy May how to arrange it and changed the tempo a bit so it would be different. Of course, it fits Frank like a glove," Pignone added.

Sinatra included the song in his concert repertoire and was gracious when referring to the role he lost to Brando. He would introduce the number by saying Brando was "not a great singer, but probably the greatest actor ever."

Sinatra recorded this as a duet with Chrissie Hynde for his 1994 album, Duets II.

This was prominently featured in the 1993 comedy Mrs. Doubtfire as Robin Williams first dons his disguise as a woman.

Sky Masterson had his money and his love life staked on a bet during "Luck Be a Lady," accompanied by an elaborate production number set in a sewer. But the musical's choreographer, Michael Kidd, had to convince director George S. Kaufman first. He recalled (as quoted in Susan Loesser's A Most Remarkable Fella):

"Now George was a very acerbic character. He examined everything with a dry sense of humor. He didn't particularly like musicals. When you did a song he would look at his watch. He said, 'Mike, I don't understand. How are you going to do a dance here? Do you mean to tell me we're going to have a scene where these tough gamblers will be standing around the stage while a bunch of dancers get up and do a dance?'

I said, 'I'll incorporate all the members of the cast into the crap game. I'll have Nathan taking a cut of every pot, I'll have Big Julie rolling. I'll have all the different characters participate.' George said, 'Well, I can't see it. It beats me.'

So I worked out the dance and came to show it to everybody, knowing that George was dead set against it. We did the number and George sat there with no sign of emotion. When it was over he turned to me and said, 'Mike, I hardly have to tell you you've done something very remarkable here. Okay, let's go on.' That was the biggest accolade you could get from George."

Loesser clashed with Sinatra during the making of the Guys and Dolls movie as Sinatra insisted on singing Nathan Detroit's numbers in his smooth signature style rather than adopt the gritty, tough-as-nails swagger Loesser had envisioned. According to Loesser's daughter, Susan, the songwriter refused to see the film and he and Sinatra never spoke again.

Bryan Ferry collaborated with Johnny Marr on this contemplative tune. He told All Songs Considered hosts Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton about working with the former Smiths guitarist. Springsteen wrote this about the inspirational power of rock music. It came to represent his friendship with members of his band.

This was the last song chosen for the album. E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt had to convince Springsteen to put it on. Van Zandt had left the band, but remained close to Springsteen and would eventually play with him again.

The original title was "Brothers Under The Bridges."

Part of the chorus provided the title for Jean-Claude Van Damme's first movie, No Retreat, No Surrender.

Springsteen often performed a slower version of this at concerts. The version on the box set Live 1975-1985 is a slower, solo performance.

Taylor Swift scrawled a lyric from this song on her arm for a live show. She wrote: "We learned more from a three-minute record than we ever learned in school."
