House of Lies Lyrics

House of Lies
  • Guitarist Mike Orlando explained this cut: "It's high energy with a cool groove and sexy bass line," he said. "It's about a strip club. You go into those places, and they're houses of lies. Make me feel good. Lie to me honey!"

    I Fought The Law Lyrics

Drinkin' beer in the hot sun
    I Fought The Law and
    I won
    I fought the law and
    I won

I needed sex and I got mine
    I fought the law and
    I won
    I fought the law and
    I won

    The law don't mean shit
If you got the right friends
    That's how this county's run
Twinkies are the best friend I ever had

    I fought the law and
    I won
    I fought the law and
    I won

I blew George and Harvey's brains out with my
    Six gun!
    I fought the law and
    I won
    I fought the law and
    I won

Gonna write my book and make a million
    I fought the law and
    I won
    I fought the law and
    I won

I'm the new folk hero of the Ku Klux Klan
My cop friend thinks it's fun
You can get away with murder if you got a badge

    I fought the law and
    I won
    I fought the law and
    I won
    I fought the law and
    I won
I AM the law so I won

    I Fought The Law
  • The song is about the murder of San Francisco mayor George Moscone and his aide Harvey Milk ("I blew George and Harvey's brains out with my six-gun") by police officer Dan White, who later managed to get out of a double murder sentence through a rather peculiar insanity defense - he claimed he went temporarily insane after eating too many Twinkies ("Twinkies are the best friends I ever had") even though there is evidence the murders were premeditated.
  • This song was featured in the second season Crime Story episode "Pauli Taglia's Dream." During portions of the titular dream, John Santucci lip-synchs to the song. (thanks, James - Tracy, CA)

    U Lyrics

TUrn your radio up, turn your radio up, yea yea
Turn your radio up, turn your radio up, yea yea

Ain't no other shawty out for you baby,
Put a million on that that that that,
I took my world and gave you half of it baby,
I pray you never give it back back back back.

    I love your style,
    I love your smile,
    I love your eyes,
They look like diamonds to me
So you could have it all,
    All of it baby,
In your favorite store blowin' stacks stacks stacks.

Because I know that all my dreams
    Are coming true yeah
    And I know-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow
I'll never feel the way I feel girl,
'Bout anyone but you, oh baby you yeah you,
You oh baby you yeah you,

See I'll go up and get a star for you baby
Pick it out and bring it back back back back
I'm glad you opened up your heart for me baby
    I ain't lying that's a fact fact fact fact

I remember us sitting up late in my one bedroom apartment
Memories runnin' thru my head head head head
You the only one I want if you were to leave me
I don't know what I would do instead stead stead stead
'Cause I love ya, I love ya
Even if I'm tempted I swear
I'll never put none of them others above ya
Hoping I can get along with your big brothers
'Cause I'm in it for the long haul like truckers
Cartier love, purple label kisses, just give me a minute
And I'll be making you my Mrs.
We can look exquisite, trips to the Pacific
Look up in the sky like look Mèma I did it

Because I know that all my dreams
    Are coming true yeah
    And I know-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow
I'll never feel the way I feel girl,
You oh baby you yeah you,
You oh baby you yeah you,
You oh baby you yeah you,
You oh baby you yeah you,

Turn your radio up, turn your radio up, yea yea
Turn your radio up, turn your radio up, yea yea
Baby throw your hands up, let's see you throw your hands up, yea yea
Let me see them hands up, let me see them hands up, yea yea
    (See I love you)

Because I know that all my dreams
    Are coming true yeah
    And I know-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow
I'll never feel the way I feel girl, 'bout anyone but

  • Austin made this song available to his fans on Valentine's Day 2014. However, it's hardly new. "'U' was actually the first song that I recorded when I moved to Miami about two years ago, so it's kind of old but I've always loved the song," he said on Live From MTV. "It's always been one of my favorites and I just thought it would be cool to release it as a Valentine's Day gift to my fans."
  • Halfway through the song, Austin reveals his rapping skills. "Hopefully I didn't sound too white," he joked to MTV.

    Vital Signs Lyrics

    Unstable condition
    A symptom of life
    In mental
    And environmental
    Change

    Atmospheric disturbance
    The feverish flux
    Of human interface
    And interchange

    The impulse is pure
    Sometimes our circuits get shorted
    By external interference

    Signals get crossed
    And the balance distorted
    By internal incoherence

    A tired mind become a shape-shifter
    Everybody need a mood lifter
    Everybody need reverse polarity

    Everybody got mixed feelings
About the function and the form
    Everybody got to deviate
    From the norm

    An ounce of perception
    A pound of obscure
    Process information
    At half-speed

    Pause
    Rewind, replay
    Warm memory chip
    Random sample
    Hold the one you need

    Leave out the fiction
    The fact is
    This friction
Will only be worn by persistence

    Leave out conditions
    Courageous convictions
Will drag the dream into existence

    A tired mind become a shape-shifter
    Everybody need a soft filter
    Everybody need reverse polarity

    Everybody got mixed feelings
About the function and the form
    Everybody got to elevate
    From the norm

    Vital Signs
  • Neil Peart (Guitar for the Practicing Musician, 1986): "At the end of an album it's impossible for us to judge which songs will truly be popular and which won't. We're inevitably surprised. And then there are songs like "Vital Signs" from our Moving Pictures album. At the time it was a very transitional song. Everybody had mixed feelings about it, but at the same time it expressed something essential that I wanted to say. That's a song that has a marriage of vocals and lyrics I'm very happy with. But it took our audience a long time to get it, because it was rhythmically very different for us and it demanded the audience to respond in a different rhythmic way. There was no heavy downbeat; it was al counterpoint between upbeat and downbeat, and there was some reflection of reggae influence and a reflection of the more refined areas of new wave music that we had sort of takes under our umbrella and made happen. That song took about three tours to catch on. It was kind of a baby for us. We kept playing it and wouldn't give up. We put it in our encore last tour-putting it in the most exciting part of the set possible-and just demanded that people accept it because we believed in it. I still think that song represents a culmination-the best combination of music, lyrics, rhythm. It opens up so many musical approaches, from being very simplistic and minimal to becoming very overplayed. Everything we wanted in the song is there. So that song was very special to us. But we had to wait. We had to be patient and wait for the audience to understand us." (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington)
  • In the Moving Pictures tour book, Peart added: "'Vital Signs' was the ultimate result, eclectic in the extreme, it embraces a wide variety of stylistic influences, ranging from the sixties to the present. Lyrically, it derives from my response to the terminology of 'Technospeak,' the language of electronics and computers, which often seems to parallel the human machine, in the functions and interrelationships they employ. It is interesting, if irrelevant, to speculate as to whether we impose our nature on the machines that we build, or whether they are merely governed by the inscrutable laws of Nature as we. (Perhaps Murphy's Laws?) Never mind!" (thanks, Nathan - Wichititty, KS)
  • Vocalist Geddy Lee recalled to The Plain Dealer newspaper in a 2011 interview: "That was a hoot to write. We wrote it in about 5 minutes in the studio. We just put it together quickly and had a lot of fun doing it. It's still fun to play. It's the quirkier side of Rush's sound, and I think there's always a need for that, to give your sound diversity."

    Time Has Come Lyrics

    Time Has Come
  • The lead single from Cult finds Anthony Raneri challenging himself to rise to the occasion. "It's meant to be more of an uplifting thing," said the singer. "If I want to make something of myself, build a legacy, accomplish something, then I've got to just go do it. The time is now to do something if you ever plan on it."
  • Anthony Raneri does some ghostwriting, and he wrote this song when he was working on a session for a Pop singer, which explains the smooth edges. Raneri won't give up the ghost by saying what artist he was writing for, but he told us: "'Time Has Come' was a really interesting one because I wrote it within a session where I was trying to write a Pop song for somebody else. So it was definitely a different approach. I wrote it completely within the computer on synthesizers and stuff like that. So it was a really unique approach for me to have as far as writing a Bayside song goes.

It was almost like being able to do a cover. It's like they do those punk-goes-pop compilations, and that's fun for a punk band to take a pop song and just rock it out. So I got to do that, except it was my own song. That was a really fun one to work on." (Here's the full Anthony Raneri interview .)
  • Asked by HMV.com why Bayside decided to title the record Cult, Raneri replied: "The word 'Cult' is a name that's followed our band around for the last few years. The fans just started calling themselves that a while back and we wanted to pay homage of them with that. Also, a real theme for this album is legacy, in terms of my lyrics and how we feel about the band, so it's a good name to sum up the history of the band."

    Available Light Lyrics

    The restless wind
    Has seen all things
    In every kind of light
    Rising with the full Moon
To go howling through the night

    The sleepless wind
    Has heard all things
    Between the sea and sky
In the canyons of the city
You can hear the buildings cry

    Oh the wind can carry
All the voices of the sea
    Oh the wind can carry
All the echoes home to me

    Run with wind and weather
To the music of the sea
    All four winds together
Can't bring the world to me
Chase the wind around the world
I want to look at life
    In the Available Light

    Play of light
    A photograph
The way I used to be
    Some half-forgotten stranger
Doesn't mean that much to me

    Trick of light
    Moving picture
    Moments caught in flight
    Make the shadows darker
Or the colors shine too bright

    Oh the light can carry
All the visions of the sea
    Oh the light can carry
    All the images to me

    Run to light from shadow
    Sun gives me no rest
    Promise offered in the east
    Broken in the west
Chase the sun around the world
I want to look at life
    In the available light

    All four winds together
Can't bring the world to me
Shadows hide the play of light
So much I want to see
Chase the light around the world
I want to look at life
    In the available light

    I'll go with the wind
    I'll stand in the light

    Available Light
  • Geddy Lee (Guitar World, March 1990): "On a tune like 'Available Light,' where the bass just provides some simple, low-end support, I'd rather play the keyboards and sing. It's just a question of what instrument will be rewarding to play from a player's point of view. If the keyboard is simply playing a strict, four-chord repeating pattern, then I'd rather just program it into some MIDI pedal and have some fun playing bass." Bear With Me
  • This song finds vocalist and lyricist Anthony Raneri putting the music business under the microscope, as well as Bayside's place within it. He said this song "has a lot to do with my career and my legacy as a musician. You look at bands like mine, and it's hard to ignore that a lot of Pop-Punk or mid-2000s Emo bands just sort of disappeared."

"Fortunately for us our band has been able to make it through a lot of that," Raneri added. "There are definitely days when I feel like I'm a novelty, but like the line in the song, I think I'm twice the man I used to be."

    Anagram Lyrics

There's a snake coming out of the darkness
    Parade from paradise
    End the need for Eden
    Chase the dreams of merchandise

There is tic and toc in atomic
    Leaders make a deal
    The cosmic is largely comic
    A con they couldn't conceal

There is no safe seat at the feast
Take your best stab at the beast
    The night is turning thin
The saint is turning to sin

    Raise the art to resistance
    Danger dare to be grand
    Pride reduced to humble pie
    Diamonds down to sand

Take heart from earth and weather
    The brightness of new birth
    Take heart from the harvest
Shave the harvest from the earth

    Reasoning is partly insane
    Image just an eyeless game
    The night is turning thin
The saint is turning to sin

    Miracles will have their claimers
    More will bow to Rome
He and she are in the house
But there's only me at home

Rose is a rose of splendor
Posed to respond in the end
    Lonely things like nights
I find, end finer with a friend

I hear in the rate of her heart
A tear in the heat of the art

    The night turns thin
    The saint turns to sin

  • Within each line of the song is a word that contains letters from another word. For example:
"There is no safe SEAT at the FEAST
Take your best STAB at the BEAST
    The NIGHT is wearing THIN
The SAINT is turning to SIN"
(thanks, Matthew Daubert - Mequon, WI)
  • Geddy Lee (from "Rush Profiled!"): "It doesn't really say one thing; it says a bunch of little things, and I think that's OK as long as it sounds good. You know, as long as it rolls off the tongue kind of thing? So I think different songs are different exercises, to a degree, and I think that if they feel like exercises, then there's something wrong with the song. But if they can slip by in a kind of cohesive and fluid way, or if the effect is to be disjoint, and sometimes that's what you're after. Sometimes you want it to be jarring and disjointed and nonsensical. I think it depends on what you're trying to do, and whether you've achieved it in your mind, and whether it actually worked, and 'Anagram,' I think, did work, even though it's a game - the whole song is a game. The choruses are quite smooth and quite interesting, and they have a nice sound to them and they kind of mock the whole song itself, so I think it was effective there."
  • (for Mongo) Is added to the name of this song title on the album. It's a joke from the movie Blazing Saddles, referring to the "Candygram for Mongo" scene, according to Geddy on "Rockline" 12/4/89. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for above 2)

    Morning
  • This track sets Morning Phase's dreamy mood, with Beck intoning, "Woke up this morning. From a long night in the storm." The album has a specific theme with all 12 songs are set in dawn's early light, the start of a day when a things can falter or start afresh. "It's not heavy-handed, but it's in there," Beck told Rolling Stone of the concept.

"There's this feeling of tumult and uncertainty, getting through that long, dark night of the soul – whatever you want to call it," he added, cracking a laugh. "These songs were about coming out of that – how things do get better."
  • Beck discussed the album title with Uncut magazine: "The album is called Morning Phase, but I suppose there was that double meaning there, 'mourning.' When I'm trying to come up with a title that sums up a group of songs, honestly, I'm just looking for something that doesn't make me cringe – or doesn't make me cringe too much," he said. "These songs, they're personal, their simple in that way."

"A lot of them referenced the morning, or the mourning of something," he continued. "And I kept thinking about this word 'phase.' Those two words came together, and really it felt like the closest approximation of the sound was going for."

    The Camera Eye Lyrics

    Grim-faced and forbidding
    Their faces closed tight
An angular mass of New Yorkers
    Pacing in rhythm
    Race the oncoming night
They chase through the streets of Manhattan
    Head-first humanity
    Pause at a light
Then flow through the streets of the city

    They seem oblivious
    To a soft spring rain
    Like an English rain
    So light, yet endless
    From a leaden sky

    The buildings are lost
    In their limitless rise
    My feet catch the pulse
    And the purposeful stride

I feel the sense of possibilities
I feel the wrench of hard realities
The focus is sharp in the city

    Wide-angle watcher
    On life's ancient tales
Steeped in the history of London
    Green and Grey washes
    In a wispy white veil
Mist in the streets of Westminster
    Wistful and weathered
    The pride still prevails
Alive in the streets of the city

    Are they oblivious
    To this quality?
    A quality of light
    Unique to every city's streets

    Pavements may teem
    With intense energy
    But the city is calm
    In this violent sea

    The Camera Eye
  • This song highlights the cultural differences between the cities of New York and London.
  • At 10:56, this was the last song Rush recorded that was over 10 minutes long.
  • This is the #1 fan requested song for Rush to perform live. Rush has not performed it completely live since Tour of the Nadars in 1982. They performed it in an abbreviated version the following tour, and it was last played live May 1983. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for all above)
  • 8:56 into the song, in the background you can hear what appears to be Geddy, burp and say "Oh gawd." Most Rush fans believe this is an "English greeting," something like, "Ello, Mornin' Gov'ner." Another possibility is that he's saying, "More Dub," requesting a monitor adjustment in his headphones. (thanks, Eddy - Ilion, NY)

    I Wanna Get Better Lyrics

Hey, I hear the voice of a preacher from the back room
Calling my name and I follow just to find you
I trace the faith to a broken down television and put on the weather
And I've trained myself to give up on the past 'cause
I frozen time between hearses and caskets
Lost control when I panicked at the acid test

    I Wanna Get Better

While my friends were getting high and chasing girls down parkway lines
I was losing my mind 'cause the love, the love, the love, the love, the love
That I gave wasted on a nice face
In a blaze of fear I put a helmet on a helmet
Counting seconds through the night and got carried away
So now I'm standing on the overpass screaming at the cars,

    Hey, I wanna get better!

I didn’t know I was lonely 'til I saw your face
I wanna get better, better, better, better,
    I wanna get better
I didn't know I was broken 'til I wanted to change
I wanna get better, better, better, better,
    I wanna get better

I go up to my room and there's girls on the ceiling
Cut out their pictures and I chase that feeling
Of an eighteen year old who didn't know what loss was

    Now I'm a stranger

And I miss the days of a life still permanent
Mourn the years before I got carried away
So now I'm staring at the interstate screaming at myself,

    Hey, I wanna get better!

I didn't know I was lonely 'til I saw your face
I wanna get better, better, better, better,
    I wanna get better
I didn't know I was broken 'til I wanted to change
I wanna get better, better, better, better,
    I wanna get better

Better, 'cause I'm sleeping in the back of a taxi
I'm screaming from my bedroom window
Even if its gonna kill me

Woke up this morning early before my family
From this dream where she was trying to show me
How a life can move from the darkness
    She said to get better

So I put a bullet where I shoulda put a helmet
And I crash my car 'cause I wanna get carried away
That's why I'm standing on the overpass screaming at myself

    Hey, I wanna get better!

I didn't know I was lonely 'til I saw your face
I wanna get better, better, better, better,
    I wanna get better
I didn't know I was broken 'til I wanted to change
I wanna get better, better, better, better,

    I Wanna Get Better
  • This ecstatic slice of electro-pop is the first single to be released by Bleachers, a side project of fun's Jack Antonoff. The project grew from various song ideas that the guitarist had whilst on an international tour supporting fun's Some Nights album. Often he would wake up in the middle of the night in his tour bus with something, "I don't really take pictures or write in a journal," Antonoff told Billboard magazine, "so the past two years of being on the road and seeing the entire world is documented in the Bleachers album, more than anything else."
  • Taylor Swift and Hayley Williams both gave Antonoff feedback on Bleachers' music, and may have had a hand in selecting this as the first single. "I sent Taylor and Hayley the song a couple weeks ago, and was like 'What do you think of the mix?'" he told MTV News. "I want to hear it through other people's ears. Something as broad as song structure or picking a single, or as small as 'Does this master have too much low end?' I want honest opinions from my friends and people I respect."
  • Antonoff co-produced the song with John Hill (M.I.A., Shakira). He also sang lead vocals and played all the instruments. The fun. guitarist recorded some of the vocals in a hotel room in Malaysia, shouting out the chorus in an empty room while his bandmate Nate Ruess prepared for their upcoming concert and continued to work on the tune as he toured the world. Antonoff told MTV News: "I did the vocals in my hotel room in Malaysia, with a laptop and a mic, and then the next day I was in South Korea, and I started mixing, and then I flew home from South Korea and John and I met in New York and we went though it there. And that's the vibe of all of it; do a guitar part here, a vocal part there, build this thing all over the world."
  • American photographer and video director Autumn de Wilde shot her daughter for the single's cover.
  • Girls creator and star Lena Dunham also happens to be Antonoff's girlfriend. She tweeted when the single was
Released: "I would be in love with this song even if I wasn't in love with its singer."
  • Lena Dunham directed the song's music video, which finds Antonoff playing a therapist. We see him listening to a mixed bag of patients complaining about their problems, with the twist being he's worse off than any of them. You might recognize Mary Kay Place, who is best known for portraying Loretta Haggers on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman as a troubled housewife, and Parks And Recreation comic actress, Retta, as a woman annoyed by her husband.
  • Antonoff told Rolling Stone that he sees this song as "the story of my existence so far and a lot of the things I struggled with."

Antonoff 's struggles include a damaging acid trip and the death of his younger sister in 2001. "A lot of things on the album, including this song, are about loss," he added. "It feels joyous, but for me it's very desperate."
  • This was the hardest song to finish on the Strange Desire album. Antonoff explained to MTV UK: "I did that first, and the track was really exciting. The track stood on its own as its own thing. I thought maybe I'd give it to a rapper because it kinda felt a little bit in that world. But I had the concept, and I wanted to put that in that track."

"Then it got really stressful because I knew I wanted to tell my whole life story condensed into three verses to give weight to the idea of 'I Wanna Get Better,'" he continued. "And you have to say something beyond that to make it feel real. It had to be perfect because I was condensing all of me into one song."

"Lyrically it was really hard, but also the melody," Antonoff added. "The way I wanted the lyrics delivered. How it's kinda jerky and spoken and sang at the same time. I feel like when you hear 'I Wanna Get Better' it feels very off the cuff. It feels like I'm sorta talking and singing and then singing the hook and chorus. But sometimes those things that feel really natural feel the longest."
  • On September 28, 2015 Bleachers released Terrible Thrills Vol. 2, a re-imagining of the Strange Desire tracks featuring a selection of female vocalists. The record acted as a follow-up to Terrible Thrills Vol. 1, which saw Scarlett Johansson, Charlotte Caffey , Amanda Palmer and Tegan and Sara among others covering tracks by Antonoff's previous band Steel Train's self-titled 2010 album.

This song was re-worked by R&B singer Tinashe. Antonoff commented to Billboard magazine: "It's a really personal song, and it was hard for me to imagine anyone else doing it, but stylistically her and I are so incredibly different that I was fascinated to hear what she'd do with it, and I completely loved it. It just felt like the different expression of a song that, to me, was so stamped in one way."

    Time Stand Still Lyrics

I turn my back to the wind
    To catch my breath,
    Before I start off again
    Driven on,
    Without a moment to spend
    To pass an evening
With a drink and a friend

I let my skin get too thin
    I'd like to pause,
    No matter what I pretend
    Like some pilgrim
    Who learns to transcend
    Learns to live
As if each step was the end

    Time Stand Still
    I'm not looking back
But I want to look around me now
    See more of the people
And the places that surround me now

    Freeze this moment
    A little bit longer
    Make each sensation
    A little bit stronger
    Experience slips away

I turn my face to the sun
    Close my eyes,
    Let my defenses down
    All those wounds
    That I can't get unwound

I let my past go too fast
    No time to pause
If I could slow it all down
    Like some captain,
    Whose ship runs aground
I can wait until the tide
    Comes around

    Make each impression
    A little bit stronger
    Freeze this motion
    A little bit longer
    The innocence slips away

    Summer's going fast
    Nights growing colder
    Children growing up
    Old friends growing older
    Experience slips away

    Time Stand Still
  • Aimee Mann from the group 'Til Tuesday sang backing vocals and appeared in the music video.
Geddy Lee (1988): "We knew that the part she sings on was a feminine part. We didn't want to use a keyboard or have Alex or myself sing it, so we started looking for a female singer. It's a very attractive opportunity for us to work with a female singer. We just looked until we found a voice, that was suitable. In listening to Aimee's last record, we loved the way she sang, so we just asked her."
  • Neil Peart (1988): "My first idea was to write about time and the first song I wrote was 'Time Stand Still'. But the more I thought about it and played around with the ideas, the more expanded idea of temperamental barriers took shape. 'Time Stand Still' applies to that concept in that it deals with the attitude of enjoying life and not letting it whisk by without appreciating it."
