The Divinity of Purpose

This was the title track to Hatebreed's sixth album, which followed their 2009 self-titled effort. They started putting riffs together in 2011 and played early versions of the songs when they toured with Five Finger Death Punch. They continued to refine the songs the following year when they toured with Lamb of God, making sure they played well in a live setting.

In our interview with Hatebreed lead singer/lyricist Jamey Jasta , he said: "A lot of people ask me what 'The Divinity of Purpose' is about, a lot of people think it's about a person. I think in the liner notes, because I had to write something, I might have alluded to that. But it could be about music, it could be about your dog, it could be about an ex or a family member. I like to have it be open to interpretation."

Honor Never Dies

"When you do something honorable for somebody, it lives on through that person," Hatebreed lead singer Jamey Jasta says by way of explaining this track. He got the idea for the song when he was visiting his grandfather in a veteran's hospital. He was talking to another patient, and was later told that this man hadn't had a visitor in over a year. This is when Jamey realized that you could be a war hero, yet still die alone.

In our interview with Jamey Jasta , he explained: "I wasn't coming from a place of anger, but I'm screaming in this aggressive way. I just wanted to have it represent the passion I felt about the topic."

As this song was coming together in the studio, the band knew they had something special. Jasta says they took a different approach in writing it. He told us: "That's the first song that I suggested we do two different guitar lines and a different bass line - and never follow everybody playing the same notes. And I think it gives an interesting sound - we've never done that before as a band. It gives an interesting temp change and mood shift from the riff in the verse to the chorus."

This rumination over distant youth serves as the emotional centerpiece of Burn Your Fire For No Witness, Angel Olsen's debut album with Jagjaguwar after a lengthy stint with her friend's label, Bathetic Records. It was also the Missouri-born singer-songwriter's first full band release, having enlisted her former Chicago cafe co-worker Josh Jaeger to play drums and the stickman's friend Stewart Bronaugh as bassist.

Olsen told Billboard magazine that she didn't originally intend to record the song. "It was one of the last things I had written and wasn't meant to be shared, but I ended up taking the album title from it," she said.

"A lot of the songs on the album are about knowing the self outside of everything else and I think of ('White Fire') as being from the perspective of this character who has grown old and is going back to the beginning of who they were," Olsen added. "They're thinking about how many times they were defiant and confident that they were doing the right thing, but in hindsight they're like 'Oh, that was kind of silly. I was so fierce and yet so wrong.'"

Heartbreak Dream

Who told Spin magazine that despite its title, this isn't a breakup song. She explained: "It's more about the kind of relationship that you probably should end but for some reason neither of you can - nobody's happy, nothing good is happening, you complain about it all the time, but you just don't end it."

She added: "A lot of my songs are like that, looking at complicated relationships rather than just being about being in love and being happy."

This song is a musical dichotomy: a lyric about pouring one's heart out over upbeat instrumentation. This was a conscious decision for Betty Who. "I didn't want to write songs that would always make you want to slit your wrists in the bathtub. I spent a lot of time writing those songs, I think those are the ones that come most naturally to me, How dark is that?" she told Radio.com . "So I have always loved the fact that I can sing music that's about [pain], but makes you dance, makes you feel good."

In an interview with Mojo magazine February 2008, bassist Colin Greenwood admitted that he felt in retrospect that Hail To The Thief should have been pruned of a few tracks including this one: "I didn't want 3 or 4 songs on there, because I thought some of the ideas we were trying out weren't completely finished." He then went on to give "The Gloaming" as an example. "We played it live and it was cool. My brother [Jonny] sampled each of the instruments on stage, cut them up then sent them back into the mix. It was so exciting, like a live DJ show, and Thom performed off of all of that. But it wasn't the same in the studio. For me, Hail To The Thief was more of a holding process, really."

Thom Yorke told the New Musical Express: "I don't know if you have this kind of experience in your job, but in mine, you meet people who have stopped being humans. You see, in an office, there is always an ambitious asshole who just doesn't care if he causes any disservice to anybody and who really thinks he's right to do so. Or if you meet a powerful politician, it's like an empty handshaking. The empty-eyed tornado. The Gloaming, according to me, explores this sick darkness which seems impossible to block." The Andy Capper directed video features The Black Lips playing live and wandering through their home city of Atlanta. The clip was inspired by Husker Du's "Don't Want to Know if You Are Lonely," which was shot on VHS. Capper explained to Vice: "For this one I just wanted the band to be in their hometown, being themselves, hanging with pals and performing."
