This was originally a #5 hit for Gene Pitney in the UK in 1967. When Almond covered the song in 1989, he invited Pitney to sing on it with him, which Pitney was happy to do.

This hit #1 in many countries including the UK, but Pitney's record label refused to release it in America, where Pitney was from. They were afraid that young listeners who were not familiar with Pitney or Almond would think they were a gay couple.

Almond was a member of the group Soft Cell, who had a hit with "Tainted Love" and broke up in 1984. He went on to have a very successful solo career, with many hit songs in the UK.

Gene Pitney in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh: "I was in the UK and my agent asked me if I would like to re-record one of my hits with Marc Almond. I was happy with that because 'Tainted Love' is a classic. I was playing in Bristol and I had to be in London for 10 in the morning to record my vocal 3 or 4 times. Then I went up north for another show. Marc's arrangement was very different from mine, so I was singing it one way in the morning and a different way that night! Our 2 vocals were edited together and I couldn't believe the result because it sounded so like we were standing next to each other, and I had never met him."

Arnold and Pitney met up for the video at the Neon Junkyard in Las Vegas. Gene says, "It was the only place in the world where you could have a neon junkyard. It was full of old neon signs and they wired up these old signs and parts of them lit up. It freezes out there at night in the wintertime and the cameramen were wearing blankets and coats, but the record was booming across the desert and it sounded great."

In an interview with Mojo Magazine January 2008, Marc Almond was asked if he was aware of the cheese factor when he recorded this duet. Almond replied: "I'm not sure. I'd been doing that song in live shows, so I went to see him play at Bow Town Hall (in East London) to an audience of loyal housewives. Gene was a great singer, and a consummate professional, but he was in the cold winter of his career. I joked to EMI that maybe Gene would be interested in doing a guest backing vocal of the song. Clive Black called him up, and Gene was straight there, stripped off to the waist in the studio and giving it his all. I didn't think of it as camp or cheesy. I was simply thrilled that he was doing it. The record was #1 all over Europe, and Gene was soon back in all the big theatres."

English singer-songwriter Chloe Howl first came to attention with a trio of EPS released in 2013, featuring sassy observations on being a modern British teenager delivered over Electro-Pop beats. She signed to a recording contract with Columbia Records only weeks after finishing her exams and was shortlisted for the 2014 BRIT Awards: Critics' Choice Award eventually losing out to Sam Smith.

This angry, sweary tune about a feckless boyfriend was posted online by Howl as her debut single in late 2012. The teenage singer told Billboard magazine that she penned the song when she was, "16 or 17," after attending a terrible birthday party. "I had this sobering moment where I stepped back and saw everyone desperately trying to get together at the end of the night," Howl explained, "because they wouldn't have felt like the night had been a success unless they had gone off with someone. I kind of wanted to take the myth out of it, really, and so 'No Strings' came from observing that weird culture."

The song was included on the soundtrack for the movie Kick-Ass 2. "It's a cool one to be on," Howl told NME. "Teenage violence, teenage sex, teenage swearing."

Dog Years

The line, "Every dog has his day" is from a 1863 children's book called Water Babies by the English novelist and clergyman Charles Kingsley.

This song (on their 23rd album) contains the line "One sniff at the hydrant" - Rush's (13th album) Signals features on the cover a dog sniffing at the hydrant.

The line, "In the dog days, People look to Sirius" is a clever pun. One meaning is that in the summer people are often serious but as written it means that people are looking to the dog star "Sirius."

Doomsday Jesus

Black Label Society frontman Zakk Wylde wrote this song after the September 11 attacks on America. The "doomsday Jesus" refers to the vengeful God depicted in the Old Testament. Wylde felt that forgiveness was not the answer, and that the attackers were due retribution. "It's about kill or be killed," he told Total Guitar. "After a while you get smacked around for so f--king long, which is what these other c--ksuckers have been doing to America, it's like that's enough. We're putting the hammer down. This was used in the film Meet Me In St. Louis. Judy Garland starred in the film and added some of the lyrics. At first, the words were very dark and she didn't feel comfortable singing them in the scene, so she helped change them to lighten the mood of the song. It was still a very melancholy song, and included the line, "Until then we'll have to muddle through somehow." In the 1950s Frank Sinatra changed that lyric to, "Hang a shining star upon the highest bough." This is the way it was usually sung from that point forward, making it a much more uplifting song.

The song was first published in 1943 with lyrics by Ralph Blane and music by Hugh Martin. The song brought comfort to many American soldiers who were fighting overseas during World War II.

One of the most popular versions of this song was recorded by the Carpenters and released in 1978 on their Christmas Portrait, the bittersweet lyrics falling right in Karen Carpenter's wheelhouse. The song was revived again in 1987 when The Pretenders contributed their version of the song to the 1987 charity album A Very Special Christmas, which featured many holiday classics recorded by some of the most popular artists of the time. These versions of the song by the Carpenters and The Pretenders are the ones that dominate airplay of the song, but other popular versions have been recorded by Michael Bublé, Luther Vandross, Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride, Little Big Town and Keyshia Cole.

James Taylor recorded his version using the original, more melancholy lyrics, shortly before September 11, 2001 and scheduled to be released the following spring. After the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, Taylor and his friends agreed to release the song prior to Christmas. Taylor's version with the original lyrics captured the appropriate mood for that Christmas season.

Sam Smith's 2014 version of the ballad resulted in its first Hot 100 appearance. The previous best chart-placing had been Michael Buble's version, which peaked at #119 in 2011.

Frank Sinatra's version was used in the 2012 movie Silver Linings Playbook, starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

Mel Torme's version was used in the 1990 John Hughes comedy Home Alone, starring Macaulay Culkin.

The Manhattans are a Rhythm and Blues vocal group from Jersey City who first formed in 1962 and have performed with changing membership since then. This moving song is about the end of a longtime love due to "obligations" and "ties." He asks the woman he's breaking up with to be stoic and remember him with love rather than falling apart and trying to stay together.

The song became The Manhattans biggest hit, reaching the top of the charts in the US and staying there for two weeks.

The song was written by Manhattans member Winfred "Blue" Lovett. He said in an interview that he envisaged Glen Campbell singing his tune. Said Lovett: "Back then I was into listening a lot to country things. Lionel Richie jumped the gun on me, but I had been listening for three or four years. I liked a lot of things Glen Campbell was doing... and Charley Pride."

"Kiss and Say Goodbye" was produced by the Philadelphia-based record producer Bobby Martin, a former member of the MFSB band of session musicians and recorded in 1975 at Joe Tarsia's Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. It would be a full year until it was released, possibly as the label was concerned about dropping a ballad during the Disco explosion. "We thought that 'Kiss and Say Goodbye' would be the wrong song to release, and we were very much upset with Columbia choosing a R&B-Country song during the disco era," said Lovett. "And how wrong we were!"

Columbia issued two different singles: the full version aimed toward the R&B market, which included a mid-song rap and an edited "pop" edition without the spoken part. Lovett said: "Pop stations didn't like the rap the way I was talking, like Barry White, Isaac Hayes or Lou Rawls. They didn't like that talking in the beginning. They felt it would sell better, if it was without the rap. I was fine with that. Whatever would sell records that was fine." (Source of quotes Soul Express )

This was the second single to earn platinum certification status, after the RIAA established the designation in 1976. (Labelmate Johnnie Taylor's "Disco Lady" had been the first a few months earlier.)

Strauss was a German composer who wrote what he called "Tone Poems," which were classical pieces in one movement inspired by some kind of literary or visual art. This was inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's book of the same name.

This is famous for its use in the 1968 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Jamie Quinn is a London-based Drum and Bass producer and DJ, who records under the name of Matrix. In 2002 Quinn had a hit as one-half of the house duo, Goldtrix. "It's Love (Trippin')," which peaked at #6 on the UK singles chart, as well as topping Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Songs. In 2005, Quinn started working with Liverpool-based producer Brendan "Futurebound" Collins and the pair gained their first UK Top 40 single when "All I Know" peaked at #29.
