Don't Matter Lyrics

Such a swine, lips like wine but it Don't Matter to me
Take a turn before I burn and it don't matter to me
Like a snake awake and vague, it don't matter to me
I can fuck or I can fight, it don't matter to me

'Cause it's always the same
And I'm always the same, whoa

Uncle Sam, he looks ?, but it don't matter to me
I don't know where I'm gonna go, it don't matter to me
You could be ? my seed but it don't matter to me

'Cause it's always the same
And I'm always the same, whoa

I'm not a man everybody said but it don't matter to me
I get her feet on my seat but it don't matter to me
Break my heart tear me apart, it don't matter to me, no no
I put a shine in your eye it don't matter to me

'Cause it's always the same
And I'm always the same, whoa

Don't Matter
  • This energetic track was one of the last songs laid down for Mechanical Bull and was written and recorded in less than two hours. Drummer Nathan Followill told Jam! Music : "We took a page from Queens of the Stone Age's book and from beginning to end kept a beat that was pulsating. It was one of those things where it was over before it even began. We were like, 'Holy s---! That's a kick ass song but that's a single-worthy song!' That's one that literally developed out of thin air."
  • Guitarist Matthew Followill described this Punk powerhouse song of self-loathing to Reuters as, "the hardest rocking song that we've ever done, and it's the fastest, so that's new for us."
  • Vocalist Caleb Followill recalled to Billboard magazine that the band penned this after realizing that they needed a rocker. "We've got a lot of mid-tempos, but we needed something that rocks really good," he said. "Me and Matthew sat there and came up with a riff in about 15 minutes, and I just went in there and just sang it off the top of my head. We played it three times and we ended up keeping the first take."

    Everywhere Lyrics

    Can you hear me calling
    Out your name
    You know that I'm falling
And I don't know what to say

    I'll speak a little louder
    I'll even shout
    You know that I'm proud
And I can't get the words out

    Oh I,
I want to be with you Everywhere
    Oh I,
I want to be with you everywhere
    (Wanna be with you everywhere)

    Something's happening
    Happening to me
My friends say I'm acting peculiarly

    C'mon baby
    We better make a start
    You better make it soon
    Before you break my heart

    Oh I,
I want to be with you everywhere
    Oh I,
I want to be with you everywhere
    (Wanna be with you everywhere)

    Can you hear me calling
    Out your name
    You know that I'm falling
And I don't know what to say

    Come along baby
    We better make a start
    You better make it soon
    Before you break my heart

    Oh I,

  • Written and sung by Christine McVie, this is a straightforward love song. Stevie Nicks, the other female member of Fleetwood Mac, had a completely different songwriting style.
  • The video is based on the poem The Highwayman and follows the story of a traveler in love with the landlord's daughter.
  • The song re-entered the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart in March 2013 thanks to it soundtracking an advert for UK cell phone provider 3. The commercial featured some Shetland Ponies performing a variety of dance moves to the song.

    Family Tree Lyrics

I tell you now that I don't understand
Why everybody gives a big hi-damn
    Oh where I'm going to
Don't mean a thing to you

I see you sitting in your masquerade
I'd love to pour you some of my lemonade
    And get it off alright
We're caught in an early night

I know you hate me so, but I ain't gonna go
    I'm staying here all right

    I am your Family Tree
    I know your A to Z
This is a secret proposition lay your hands on me
Not gonna talk about darlin', its so neighborly

I see your hands are shaking but
My heart is breaking me down

Its a pretty day and I'm gonna get alright
I lost my head and you ain't nowhere in sight
I see you got it all wrong
I got no calls on my phone

I just keep holding out, until I find a doubt
    That you ain't coming home

    I am your family tree
    I know your A to Z
This is a secret proposition lay your hands on me
Not gonna talk about darlin', its so neighborly

I see your hands are shaking but
My heart is breaking me down

    I am your family tree
    I know your A to Z
This is a secret proposition lay your hands on me

    Family Tree
  • Frontman Caleb Followill explained the song's meaning to The Sun: "While you'd expect the track 'Family Tree' to be about family, it's a song I wrote about a lot of stereotypes about the South," he said. "It's got humor in there, I hope. Even with my personal stuff I try to have fun – the hook of the chorus to that song is a joke."
  • The hip-shaking boogie shuffle has a louder, looser feel than most of the tracks on Kings of Leon's previous Only By The Night and Come Around Sundown sets. Drummer Nathan Followill told Rolling Stone: "'Family Tree' is a song that sounds like we picked up our instruments and went with a groove, and that's pretty much exactly how it happened. That song embodies the headspace we had going into that record."
  • Lead guitarist Matthew Followill told Billboard magazine that this is a weird song for him to play. He explained: "It's so rhythm heavy that there's not a lot of space for anything else, everything's covered. There's nothing I can do that sounds cool, it sounds cool just being like it is, with just the bass and the drums it sounds great. So I didn't write any big parts for that, a lot of it is kind of noodling."

Long Road Out Of Here Lyrics

    It's too late
    All the lights are out
    All the kids have played
Now I've lost my way, but anyway

    Heartache and pain baby
I know my name right now
    And you're calling me
And I need the ground as my final place
Oh, how you love me anyway

It's a Long Road Out Of Here
    Don't leave the light on
    I ain't coming home
    You gotta be strong

It's a long road out of here
When you love me like you do
Makes it hard for me to leave you

    Distance, my friends
It's closer when you reach the end
    Between time and space
    Oh, I can't erase, anyway

It's a long road out of here
    Don't leave the light on
    I ain't coming home
    You gotta be strong

It's a long road out of here
When you love me like you do
Makes it hard for me to leave you

And you carry all the weight of the world in your hands
And you're given all my love you never thought you had

And all I know to believe it is closing me eyes and all my dreams
But I guess I just want to go on and on
I guess I just want to go on and on
I guess I just want to go on and on
And I guess I just want to go on and on

I guess I just want to go on and on
I guess I just want to go on and on
I guess I just want to go on and on

    Wait 'til you're announced
We've not yet lost all our graces
The hounds will stay in chains
Look upon your greatness and she'll send the call out
    Send the call out

Call all the ladies out, they're in their finery
    A hundred jewels on throats
    A hundred jewels between teeth
Now bring my boys in, their skin in craters like the moon
The moon we love like a brother, while he glows through the room
Dancin' around the lies we tell
Dancin' around big eyes as well
Even the comatose, they don't dance and tell

We live in cities you'll never see onscreen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams
And you know we're on each other's Team

I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air
    So there

So all the cups got broke
    Shards beneath our feet
    But it wasn't my fault
And everyone's competing for a love they won't receive
Cause what this palace wants is release

We live in cities you'll never see onscreen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams
And you know we're on each other's team

I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air
    So there
I'm kind of older than I was when I reveled without a care
    So there

We live in cities you'll never see onscreen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams
And you know we're on each other's team

    We're on each other's team
And you know we're on each other's team

  • The third single from Lorde's debut album, Pure Heroine, finds the teenage singer touching on disconnection with modern pop music and the difference between on-screen portrayals and reality over a clap-along synth-heavy beat. She told Billboard magazine: There are a few lines which are kind of me being the 'realistic' pop star: 'We live in cities you'll never see on-screen,' which is like, no one comes to New Zealand, no one knows anything about New Zealand, and here I am, trying to grow up and become a person. I've been countering that with going to New York and seeing this place that's in every movie and every TV show. Part of me wanted to go back to writing for me and for my friends, and write something that I felt related to us a little bit."
  • Lorde told The Fader there are two lines on the song that are particularly important to her. She said: "One of them was: 'We live in cities you'll never see onscreen.' Because I like in Auckland, which is definitely not New York. It just felt important for me to be speaking for the minority. Coming from a small city, somewhere that feels unimportant, you just wanna get out of there. You're whole teenage life The other line is: 'I'm kind of over getting told to throw my hands up in the air.' Because, there's been so much of that in pop music, and I'm like, this is the stupidest thing. Being told to put your hands in the air? That's the last thing I wanna do right now. I just wanted to be a bit more realistic. I don't if that's relating to young people in general, or just people who listen to pop."
  • This along with all the other Pure Heroine tracks was penned by Lorde with producer Joel Little and recorded with him at Golden Age Studios in Auckland. Little recalled to Billboard magazine: "'Team' was a beat that I had floating around. I thought I'd be able to do something cool with it, but every time I started playing around with it, it didn't feel quite right. I was at home and I did a melody for the intro section, where it's just a double a cappella of her voice. It popped into my head and I was like, 'I can do something where it starts off super slow and dark and it's just her. If we can find a way to loop he last little bit and speed it up, then it will be a bit of a twist.' So I went into the studio with that idea, had her put the lyrics together for that intro, and it went from there. I'm proud of that song; it's a good one."
  • The song's music video was filmed in an abandoned building called the Red Hook Grain Terminal, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook. The clip was directed by Young Replicant (The xx) and features a society of acne-faced misfit teenagers, headed by Lorde. "It was important to me that we cast real people with real faces. [H]olla acne!," the singer said. "This video was borne from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was queen. I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn't need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger."
  • Like her hit "Royals," and many of her other tracks, this song uses a cold open, with Lorde singing right off the top. "Team" ends just as abruptly, with the song closing out all at once when she sings the last line, "And you know." This start-with-the-vocal approach was common in Punk Rock (listen to the Ramones for examples), but generally goes against convention, since musical intros can help ease the listener into the song and also give disc jockeys room to talk them up.
  • Like "Royals," this song relies on a simple percussion, this time with hand claps instead of snaps.
  • Most hit songs get to the chorus within the first 45 seconds, but this one waits a while. It's not until 1:05 that we hear the first chorus - about a third of the way into the song.

    Constellations Lyrics

The light was leaving and the west it was blue
The children's laughter saying they're skipping just like the stones they threw
The voices echoed across the ways, it's getting late

It was just another night with the sunset and
The moon rise not so far behind
To give us just enough light
To lay down underneath the stars listening to
Papa's translations of the stories across the sky, we drew our own Constellations

The west winds often last too long
But when they come down nothing ever feels the same
Sheltered under the Kamani tree waiting for the passing rain
Clouds keep moving to uncover the sea
Stars above us chasing the day away
To find the stories that we sometimes need
Listen close enough all else fades
    Fades away

It was just another night with the sunset and
The moon rise not so far behind
To give us just enough light
To lay down underneath the stars listening to
All the translations of the stories across the sky to do our own constellations

  • Johnson: "That's one I wrote while I was surfing. I was out longboarding in California. The sun had just set and the moon was rising so it was real nice. It was also summertime and warm, so I could stay out and surf for a while. I was alone, it was really calm and the wind was dead and it was a real magical night. The wind was nonexistent so you could hear things from really far away. And I could hear these kids who were laughing and skipping rocks on the beach. All their dads were there and it was kind of like dads' night out camping with the kids on the beach. The were all sitting around this little campfire and the kids were playing. And it just started getting me thinking about sailing canoe trips my father and I took around the island when I was younger. He'd always show me all the constellations up in the sky and tell me the stories about Pleiades being chased by Taurus the bull, Orion coming to save Pleiades and Orion's little dog following right next to him. Those stories always stuck with me, as did just the time we spent learning about the stars. It was a really nice thing. He always explained to me that the stars made him feel like he was never really lost. That if he found himself somewhere where he didn't know where he was and looked up into the sky at night, he could see where the stars were and put the puzzle together. It made him feel a little more at home anywhere he was in the world. I've noticed with myself now when I travel, that if I'm able to place a few of the constellations I'll get a better sense of where I am in the world."

    I've sealed myself in
    Laminated all of my skin
    Sellotaped my world in bits
    I must embrace paralysis

Only in you do we see ourselves
Only in you can we see our end
So sick and so tired of being 4 real

Only in you can we imagine our mend
So sick and so tired of being 4 real
Only the fiction still has the appeal

  • Bassist Nicky Wire penned the song's lyrics by text message and texted them out to vocalist James Dean Bradfield and drummer Sean Moore. He was stuck back home in Wales looking after sick members of his family while his bandmates were recording at Berlin's Hansa studios. Wire explained to The Quietus : "My Dad was in hospital, and my wife was in hospital, the kids had norovirus and I was just mopping up sick and s--t, amazingly I didn't get ill but everyone else was so poorly. I've never been through so many Flash wipes and so much Domestos in my entire life. I was walking round in rubber gloves. It was proper Howard Hughes, I had face masks on and everything, but there you go."

"Out of misery a flower blossomed," Wire continued. "We'd arranged this two week session in Hansa which I was so looking forward to, and everyone did get slightly better so I thought I might go for the last four days- and then I got snowed in. James said, 'Have you got anything going?' So I texted him that and within two days they'd done that track. I didn't even write it down on paper, which I've never done before."
  • Wire explained the song's meaning to The Quietus: "It's about crawling through the ship wreckage and still trying," he said, "I guess like a junkie will try and get some semblance of justification and routine, I'm always obsessed with how, in whatever situation I'm in, trying to invent that one bit of stability to keep it all together."
  • That's Sean Moore playing the flugelhorn (a kind of trumpet) solo. Wire commented to The Quietus, "It's very 'God Only Knows', something about it lifts the song out of the pit. Something about how you've been through all of that and now you're out."

  • On this song, Jack speaks in Italian (oi lienda, bella che fa?) then in Spanish (bonita, bonita que tal?) then in French (belle, Je ne comprends pas francais) then, of course, in English (So you'll have to speak to me some other way!).
  • This one is not to be taken seriously - Johnson refers to it "a joke." Said Johnson: "My wife speaks a little bit of French. We went traveling around Europe together years ago. It's probably the oldest song I have. I kind of learned these bossa nova chords. And I was joking with her, basically saying, 'Hey beautiful' in a lot of different languages and then said, 'Je ne comprend pas francais,' which is 'I don't understand' in French, 'So you'll have to speak to me some other way.' I toyed around with that in the studio and ended up liking it and put it on the record."

Lost on my own in the blazing sun
Down through the streets of Tokyo
Feeling like an alien is so much fun
This place somehow feels like a second home

I dream of the Tokyo skyline
I miss the emptiness and the silence
    I long for the non-communication
Everything is happily lost in translation

    I miss the Tokyo skyline
I miss the smog and the sunshine
Every night I sit and remember
This love I feel for a modern wonder

I dream of the Tokyo skyline
I miss the emptiness and the silence
    I long for the non-communication

    (I Miss The) Tokyo Skyline
  • Nicky Wire's lyrics for this song are about the band being completely seduced by Tokyo. He told The Quietus : "I think we all were when we first went there and we did the 'Motorcycle Emptiness' video, it's the first place we ever got a gold disc. I'll never forget, we turned up at the airport at six in the morning and there were hundreds of people, we all looked behind us because we thought The Black Crowes were there or something. We realised they were all waiting for us, and thought, 'Fu--ing hell!' It was such an indelible scar. It's the most alien culture I've ever been to, in a good way, and I've loved the feeling of safety. Whenever we go back there's a special bond."
  • Vocalist James Dean Bradfield described this track to NME as having a "fragility, but it's not mournful or dampened."
  • Here are three more songs that were inspired by the Japanese city:

    "Tokyo Melody" by Helmut Zacharias.

    "Elephant Song" by Enemy.

    "Paris, Tokyo" by Lupe Fiasco.

Pedant's corner: Actually, Tokyo isn't officially a city. In 1943 Tokyo Metropolis was formed from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture and the city of Tokyo. Since then, Tokyo has been commonly referred to as a "metropolitan prefecture."

    Crying Shame Lyrics

    It's such a tight game
    Will it ever stop?
How will this all play out?
Both sides out of mind now

By now we should know how to communicate instead of coming to blows
We're on the road and there ain't no stopping us now
    We're burning under control
Isn't it strange how we're all burning
    Under the same sun
By now they say if it's a war for peace
    It's the same old game
But do we really want to blame?
We could close our eyes it's still there
We could say it's us against them
We could try but nobody wins
Gravity has got a hold on us all
We could try to put it out
    But it's a growing flame
    Using fear as fuel
    Burning down our name
And it won't take too long
Cause words are burned the same
Then who are we gonna blame
    Now and all

It's such a crying, crying, Crying Shame
It's such a crying, crying, crying shame
It's such a crying, crying, crying shame
    Shame shame shame

By now it's beginning to show
A number of people their numbers that ain't coming home
I could close my eyes it's still there
    Close my mind, be alone
I could close my heart and not care
But gravity has got a hold on us all
It's a terrific price to pay
But in the true sense of the word
Are we using what we've learned
In the true sense of the word
Are we losing what we were

    It's such a tight game
    Will it ever stop?
It's not for me to say
And is it in our blood?
Or is it just our fate?
And how will this all play out?
Both sides out of my mind now
Who are we gonna blame all and all?

It's such a crying, crying crying shame
It's such a crying, crying crying shame
It's such a crying, crying crying shame, shame, shame

    Crying Shame
  • Johnson said of this song: "I had a few of the lines for it here and there. But what really inspired me to write the rest of it was an interview with Kurt Vonnegut I read where he was asked if he felt that the leaders of today - cultural, political, and artistic - were being responsible to their society. And he had this line that I thought was great where he said, 'Forget about society. What about humanity in general?' And so that was the idea for the song. The first line is, 'By now we should know how to communicate instead of coming to blows.' It just seems that in this day and age with email and telephones, it's crazy how we still have wars. It seems that everything should be able to be worked out through a conversation by now, if there's just a little bit of compassion on every side."

As Holy As The Soil (That Buries Your Skin) Lyrics

As Holy As The Soil (That Buries Your Skin)
  • Bassist Nicky Wire's lyrics for this song were originally about the Manic's original guitarist and lyricist Richey Edwards, who disappeared on February 1, 1995. He told The Quietus : "I think this is as close to a love song to Richey as we're ever going to write. It's the oldest song on the album, I wrote the music and the words and I'd kept it hidden for about three years, because it's one of those topics you just feel a bit… but then you realise it's 20 years. We've done stuff like 'Cardiff Afterlife' and 'Nobody Loved You', but they were a bit more autobiographical - this is more, 'Fu--ing hell, it would be good if you were around, if you just turned up one day. Imagine how many festivals we could headline?' At which he would laugh. I just miss his pulverising intellect. It's not just us - I think the musical landscape misses him."

"Then I lost a really good friend at Sony, our product manager for the last five years," Wire continued, "and he died really young, so I changed a couple of lyrics because it had an awful impact. It became this song about redemptive loss."
  • Wire sings on this song rather than The Manic's regular vocalist, James Dean Bradfield. The bassist told The Quietus: "I think this is my best vocal, I put a lot of work into it. James said he thought this is the one my voice should be on, because it's got that sort of cracked frailty in the verses. I'm dreading playing it live - I don't like singing live."

    Sitting, Waiting, Wishing Lyrics

Well I was Sitting, Waiting, Wishing
    You believed in superstitions
Then maybe you'd see the signs

Lord knows that this world is cruel
And I ain't the Lord no I'm just a fool
And a loving somebody don't make them love you

Must I always be waiting, waiting on you?
Must I always be playing, playing your fool?

I sang your songs, I danced your dance
I gave your friends all a chance
Putting up with them wasn't worth never having you

Aw, maybe you've been through this before
But it's my first time so please ignore
The next few lines 'cause they're directed at you

I can't always be waiting, waiting on you
I can't always be playing, playing your fool

    I keep playing your part
    But it's not my scene
    Want this plot to twist
    I've had enough mystery

    Keep building it up
But then you're shooting me down
    But I'm already down
    Just wait a minute

    Just sitting, waiting
    Just wait a minute
    Just sitting, waiting

Well if I was in your position
I'd put down all my ammunition
I'd wonder why it had taken me so long

But Lord knows that I'm not you
And if I was I wouldn't be so cruel
'Cause waiting on love ain't so easy to do

Must I always be waiting, waiting on you?
Must I always be playing, playing your fool?

No I can't always be waiting, waiting on you
I can't always be playing, playing your fool, fool

    Sitting, Waiting, Wishing
  • Jack Johnson explained: "A friend of mine was trying to get this girl, and I tried to write a song that would help him have a laugh at himself because he was spending so much time trying to get her and it obviously wasn't leading anywhere. That was one just to cheer up a friend."
  • Directed by The Malloy Brothers, the music video was shot in one take and played backwards, a technique pioneered by the director Spike Jonze in his video for "Drop" by The Pharcyde, and used by Coldplay in their video for "The Scientist." The challenge for the performer in these videos is singing the song backwards, which Johnson had to learn.
