Let the Music Do the Talking Lyrics

Rock-a-bye baby if you want to dance
Grab yourself a body and take a chance
They say one time around is all you get
But I'm still dancin' so you lost your bet
I got a hardcore mama with a hot hoochie coo
Make my wheels start spinnin' like a formula two
I got one for the money
Two for the show
Three for my honey
And four to let you know that I
Let the Music Do the Talking
Let the music do the talking
Let the music do the talking
Let the music do the talking
Cheesecake maybe if I take another bite
I'm a real fat city I'm an aero delight
Threw out my pipe and my alcoline
Got a squeaky clean body and a dirty mind
I'm a real fine dancer I'll be cutting rug
Got my brand new baby she's my brand new drug

Let the Music Do the Talking
  • Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry wrote this song after leaving the band in 1979. He recorded it with his own group, The Joe Perry Project, making it the title track of their 1980 album. When Perry returned to Aerosmith in 1984, the band signed a new record deal with Geffen Records and began to sober up, leading to their wildly successful comeback.

    Done with Mirrors was their first Geffen album, and a newly recorded "Let the Music Do the Talking" was the first single. This success would have to wait, however, as both the single and album sold poorly, mostly consumed by fans loyal to the band from their '70s heyday. Their resurgence would come two years later with the release of the Permanent Vacation album.
  • The Done with Mirrors album had an interesting packaging gimmick: the letters were printed backward so you had to hold it up to a mirror to read it. The single cover for this song was also printed this way.
  • Along with the rest of the album, this song was produced by Ted Templeman, best known for his work with Van Halen. It was Aerosmith's record company that paired them with Templeman, hoping he would deliver something along the lines of his previous Van Halen effort, 1984. Templeman and Aerosmith didn't click, and for their next album, Bruce Fairbairn was at the controls.
  • This is one of the few Aerosmith songs with no writing contribution from Steven Tyler. The entire song was written by Joe Perry; without Tyler's words, he simply wrote about how his music does the talking for him.
  • The band shot a video for this song, which was directed by Jerry Kramer, who had done a few Jefferson Starship videos and the Rod Stewart clip for "Some Guys Have All The Luck." Steven Tyler wanted to capture the live feel of the band, so the concept was footage show by a kid who sneaks a video camera into a show and films them performing this song.

    The clip was ignored by MTV, who only warmed to Aerosmith after Tyler and Joe Perry appeared in the Run-D.M.C. "Walk This Way" collaboration. Within a few years, Aerosmith would become one of the hottest bands on the network, thanks in part to Alicia Silverstone's appearances in their videos.

    Super Freak Lyrics

    She's a very kinky girl,
    The kind you don't take home to mother;
    She will never let your spirits down,
    Once you get her off the street.

    She likes the boys in the band,
    She says that I'm her all time fav'rite;
    When I make my move to her room,
    It's the right time; she's never hard to please.

    That girl is pretty wild now;
    The girl's a Super Freak;
    The kind of girl you read about
    In the new wave magazines.
    That girl is pretty kinky;
    The girl's a super freak;
    I'd really like to taste her
    Ev'ry time we meet.
    She's all right; she's all right;
    That girl's all right with me yeah.
    She's a super freak, super freak,
    She's super freaky; super freak, super freak.

    She's a very special girl,
    From her head down to her toenails;
    Yet she'll wait for me at backstage with her girlfriends,
    In a limousine.

    Three's not a crowd to her, she said;
    "Room 714, I'll be waiting."
    When I get there she's got incense, wine and candles;
    It's such a freaky scene.

    That girl is pretty wild now;
    The girl's a super freak;
    The kind of girl you read about
    In the new wave magazines.
    That girl is pretty kinky;
    The girl's a super freak;
    I'd really like to taste her
    Ev'ry time we meet.
    She's all right; she's all right;
    That girl's all right with me yeah.
    She's a super freak, super freak,
    She's super freaky; super freak, super freak.
    Temptations sing; oh, super freak,
    Super freak, the girl's a super freak; oh.

    She's a very kinky girl,
    The kind you don't take home to mother;
    She will never let your spirits down,
    Once you get her off the street.

    Super Freak
  • This song is about a girl who is very adventurous sexually, especially with members of a band. A "Freak" is slang for someone willing to try various fetishes, thus a "Super Freak" will try just about anything. James was famous for his penchant toward "freakish" behavior, which got him in trouble with the law when he and his girlfriend were arrested for kidnapping another girl for sex.
  • This was the biggest hit for James. He had just modest success on the Hot 100 (where he never scored a Top 10 hit) but had four #1 R&B hits and was a prolific producer and innovator of Funk. Explaining how he came up with this song, he told Musician magazine in 1983: "I wanted to write a silly song. I was in the studio and everything else for the album (Street Songs) was done. I just put 'Super Freak' together really quickly. I wanted a silly song that had a bit of new wave texture to it. So I just came up with this silly little lick and expounded on it. I came up with the bass part first. Then I put a guitar on it and keyboards, doing the 'ehh ehh,' silly keyboard part. Then I found a tuning on my Oberheim OB-Xa that I'd been wanting to use for a long time – it sounds like ghosts. And I put a very operatic vocal structure on it 'cause I'm really into opera and classical music. You probably hear a lot of that in my music. So I put (sings in a deep voice) 'She's all right'; very operatic, sort of funny, stuff."
  • The famous bass line in this song was sampled by MC Hammer for his biggest hit, "U Can't Touch This." James filed suit against Hammer, which ended in an out-of-court settlement giving James a songwriting credit on the track. This resulted in James' only Grammy Award when "U Can't Touch This" won in 1991 for Best R&B Song.
  • This was released on Motown Records, and featured backup vocals by The Temptations, something James points out in the song when he screams: "Tempations sing." One of their members, Melvin Franklin, was Rick James' uncle.
  • "Super Freak" was released about five months after MTV went on the air, and Rick James made a slick video for the song hoping it would get some spins on the network. At the time, however, MTV refused to play videos by black artists, and they rejected this clip, continuing to feed America a steady stream of Rock and EuroPop. This refusal to play black music was a holdover from radio station programming, where conventional wisdom was that you would lose your white listeners if you played black music. The first black artist to make MTV with a new song was Musical Youth, who despite adapting a song about smoking marijuana, was a lot less scary to network executives than the glitter-vested James singing about kinky sex. This color barrier was shattered by Michael Jackson, who brought a new sound and sophistication to the network with the videos for his Thriller album.
  • Even though the network didn't play this video, Rick James eventually made peace with MTV and put their co-founder, Les Garland, in the video for Eddie Murphy's song "Party All the Time," which James produced. As for exactly why MTV passed on "Super Freak," their director of acquisitions, Carolyn Baker, explained in the book I Want My MTV: "It wasn't MTV that turned down 'Super Freak.' It was me. I tuned it down. You know why? Because there were half-naked women in it, and it was a piece of crap. As a black woman, I did not want that representing my people as the first black video on MTV."
  • Over the years, the word "Freak" became very popular and Hip Hop and R&B lyrics. It's a versatile word that can be used as both a verb ("Freak Me") and a noun ("The Freaks Come Out At Night"). Use of the word peaked in the mid-'90s with the phrase, "Get your freak on."
  • The Dutch dance duo The Beatfreakz covered this in 2006. Their version reached #7 in the UK, the first time this song charted in Britain as Rick James original version wasn't a hit there.
  • In the movie Little Miss Sunshine, the little girl Olive does a wonderfully inappropriate dance to this song in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant.
  • When James implores, "Blow, Danny!," he's talking to his sax player Daniel LeMelle just before his solo.
  • A Los Angeles DJ named Alonzo Miller is credited as a writer on this track along with James. Miller worked on the lyrics with James, helping tone them down so the song had a better chance of getting airplay and crossing over to a white audience. Miller was able to get the song played at the station where he worked, KACE.

    Opening Night
  • "Opening Night" is the opening number from the musical and 2005 film The Producers - no surprises there. Like the rest of the score, it was written by the multi-talented Mel Brooks. The song is performed by the Ensemble, and introduces Max Bialystock, who has just produced Funny Boy!, a musical version of Hamlet, which opens and closes the same night. Needless to say, the song is a joke at Bialystock's expense:

    "What he did to Shakespeare
    Booth did to Lincoln"
  • The original 1968 film The Producers did not include this song; of the musical numbers therein, only "We're Prisoners Of Love" and "Springtime For Hitler" were written by Mel Brooks.

    Genie On A Table Top
  • Is this song really about Louis Armstrong? Apparently so, although when he introduced it at the S.P.A.C.E. music venue in Evanston, Illinois on June 3, 2012, Al said it was a one of only two happy songs he had ever written - which is surely an exaggeration. Rock songs are written in metaphors, he said, but this one is written entirely in similes.

    Running to 3 minutes 47 seconds, the studio version is the 5th track on his 1993 Famous Last Words album, and yes, Satchmo does get a brief mention towards the end. In a simile, of course.

    We Can Do It Lyrics

    We Can Do It
  • The third song from the 2005 film The Producers is a duet between self-styled King of Broadway Max Bialystock and his accountant Leo Bloom. In the film version it begins in the office and finishes outside. In the London production at Theatre Royal Drury Lane it takes place entirely in his office. The programme gives the actual date as June 16, 1959, earlier than in the original 1968 film.

    Max is played by Fred Applegate; Leo by John Gordon Sinclair. What is it they can do? His latest show having closed on its opening night, Max is told that it would be possible to make more money with a flop than with a hit; the song is about him attempting to persuade the accountant to help him set up such a scheme.
  • Like the rest of the songs in the show, "We Can Do It" was written by Mel Brooks.

    Honey, This Mirror Isn't Big Enough For The Two Of Us
  • This is about a guy deciding that a fake life with a woman is leading him nowhere and he wants to cut it off. Despite the fact that he seems popular being with this woman and she wants him, he is drinking, they fight, and all of his friends are fake. It is a song about not selling out for the high life.
  • There are some drug references in this song, such as "Eating breakfast on a mirror," which implies doing cocaine after waking up. The controlling girlfriend doesn't want the singer to do them, and he resists.
  • More lyric interpretation:
    "The amount of pills I'm taking, counteracts the booze I'm drinking, And this vanity I'm breaking lets me live my life like this" - He's doing many things at once. The "vanity" could have a double meaning, literally it's a piece of furniture but it could also indicate how self-absorbed he is.

    "And you can cry all you want to, I don't care how much." - He doesn't care how much she cries and begs him to stop using drugs, he won't stop so she might as well give up.

    We're Prisoners Of Love
  • This is one of only two songs written by Mel Brooks for his 1968 film The Producers; the other is "Springtime For Hitler." Much later he would compose the entire score for the remake and stage musical.

    "We're Prisoners Of Love" sees crooked producer Max Bialystock a prisoner of Uncle Sam. In the 2005 version, this song is called simply "We're Prisoners Of Love". The title is also that of a musical written in Sing Sing prison after Max is convicted of a financial scam - the theme of the film. Happily though, on account of writing this musical he is pardoned.

    Cubicles
  • This song is about a guy (most likely a nerdy, self-conscious guy), who falls in love with a girl who works a few cubicles down from him in an office, but she leaves and his world falls apart. The whole CD has a lot to do with classic movie plots, with themes of vampires, zombies, office romance and lovers running from the law together.
  • This song is about rejection, but it's framed in the context of everyday office life. He writes love notes to a girl every day, but never has the nerve to give them to her, so tears them up and throws them out of the window. Then eventually, she switches jobs, and he says that whoever takes her place in her cubicle, it will only be a temporary stand in for her. And he starts to think that he's never going to meet anyone and he'll die alone. He Imagines things that they could have done together, that he knows that they will never do because he would never talk to her. It's about loving someone that you see regularly, but they don't even realize you exist.

    Spent a hour in the bathroom walked out looking like a model
    God! Doing what you do, got me Right There with Apollo
    On the moon, Who needs genies in a bottle girl
    If they already got you

    Boy you make me feel so lucky
    Finally the stars align
    Never has it been so easy, to be in love
    And to give you this heart of mine
    You know what I need (Eh!)
    I know what you like (Eh!)
    Put it all together baby we could be alright (Hey)
    How could this be wrong
    When it feels so right
    Yeah, I really love you I really love you

    And I'll never let you go
    You should know
    I'm never gonna change
    I'm always gonna stay
    You call for me, I'm right there (right there)
    Right there (right there)

    Sometimes I catch myself daydreaming
    Lost in in your eyes and I lose all track of time
    You know what I need (Eh!)
    I know what you like (Eh!)
    Put it all together baby we could be alright (Hey)
    How could this be wrong

    I'll always be right there

    Now if all fell through it
    Would you catch me before the pavement
    If my Benz turned back to Public Transportation
    Would you still be at home for me with the candles waiting
    And get my mind back adjacent to the place of a young visionary
    A player too, you know I have some girls missionary
    My black book, and numbers thicker than the dictionary
    And bible I got to recycle
    I love and I like you
    Five course meals even though you don't mind a drive-thru
    That's why I got you

    Right There
  • This mid-tempo love song finds Ariana trading verses with G.O.O.D. Music MC Big Sean about their feelings on relationships. Whilst Grande croons more traditionally romantic sentiments Sean bigs up his attraction to females. "My black book of numbers thicker than the dictionary," he boasts. The track was made available as a free download for fans who pre-order Ariana's Yours Truly album.
  • Ariana told MTV News that she considers the song to be, "kind of like the sequel to 'The Way.'"
  • Ariana and Sean have been friends for a while, but she was waiting for the perfect tune to collaborate with the rapper. "We wanted to have writing sessions and, like, jam together but we never found the time and we never found the right song," she said. "We were talking about a few other songs together but it just never worked out and it never was the right moment and then finally 'Right There' came along. And we were like 'Oh this is it'."
  • Producer Harmony Samuels sampled the jazz funk loop from Lil Kim's hip-hop tune "Crush On You." The rapper's 1996 hit single interpolated The Jeff Lorber Fusion's "Rain Dance" from their 1979 album Water Sign.
  • The song's music video was directed by Nev Todorovic and produced by Allysa Pankiw of the Young Astronauts, the same pair that worked on Arina's "Almost Is Never Enough" clip. It is based on Baz Luhrmann's 1996 take on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and focuses on the story's masquerade ball, where Grande's Juliet locks eyes with Romeo. The latter is played by American actor and son of Arnie, Patrick Schwarzenegger (Grown Ups 2), whilst Big Sean portrays "The Priest."

    Todorovic told MTV News that the references to Baz Luhrmann's 1996 re-telling of the play was something that they hadn't originally intended on. "The religious symbolism and the costume party are all from the original Shakespearean play," he explained. "But as we were planning the shoot, and especially on set, we started seeing more of those similarities emerge. Like if you notice, we had an Astronaut in the masquerade ball and everyone is comparing it to Paul Rudd's character, but really it was an homage to our team The Young Astronauts!"

  • Adam "King Ad-rock" Horovitz talks about this song in the liner notes of the Beastie Boys anthology: "Sabotage was recorded as an instrumental, and the vocals weren't added until two weeks before the record was completed. It was the last song on Ill Communication to be finished."
  • The video, which was directed by Spike Jonze, was a parody of '70s cop shows such as CHiPs and Hawaii Five-0. It featured the 3 Beasties with shaggy hair and huge sunglasses, running around the city chasing a man with a briefcase and doing other cop stuff. The video won several MTV awards.
  • Adam "MCA" Yauch recalled to Q magazine April 2008 how the video came about: "Adam (Ad-Rock Horovitz) wanted us to do a photo shoot as undercover cops on a stake-out, sitting in a car, surrounded by coffee cups and doughnut wrappers. We mentioned it to Spike and he said, 'Let's do it'."

    False alarm there's still a charm for me
    Just wait and see

    If each man had his freedom
    And it was ours to say
    How to behave, ho who's to say

    So picture me in a hospital
    Blood runs raw and the bags are full of
    You're terrible and I'm invincible
    Picture me in a hospital

This collaboration with vocalist Peter Doherty was inspired by his slow, painful, but ultimately full recovery. He told NME: "This is about Peter coming to visit me after my car accident. One of my first memories was the paramedic telling me I'd broken my spine in three places. Then my next memory is on a slab with doctors all around me. We're feelin' good from the pills we took
    Oh, baby, don't gimme that look

    We ain't much to look at so
    Close your eyes, here we go
    We're playin' at the talent show
    Playin' at the talent show
    Come on along, here we go
    Playin' at the talent show
    Hop a ride, here we go
    Playin' at the talent show

    Well it's the biggest thing in my life I guess
    Look at us all, we're nervous wrecks
    Hey, we go on next

    Talent show
    Talent show
    Playin' at the talent show
    Playin' at the talent show

    Wish us luck if you can't go
    Playin' at the talent show
    An empty seat in the front row
    We might even win this time, guys, you never know

    It's too late to turn back, here we go...

    Talent Show
  • While performing this on an MTV awards show, the line "Feelin' good from the pills we took" was bleeped. As an subtle "screw you" to the show, they replaced "It's too late to turn back" with "It's too late to take pills" for the rest of the song. This incident is further evidence of why they never were as famous as they could have been.
  • The tune and chorus were lifted from their song "Portland."
