Vocalist Neil Tennant told Electronic Beats magazine about this song: "There's a quote by the British actor Michael Gambon, who was asked to describe what he did for a living—as an actor obviously—and he said, 'Shouting in the evening!' And the lyric is actually really taken from Lionel Richie 'Dancing On The Ceiling': 'Oh what a feeling, shouting in the evening.' [laughs] No really, it's, 'Oh what a feeling. This paean to raving started off as a joke based on the fact that dance songs don't have vocals anymore (Hence the line "I like the singer, he's lonely and strange – every track has a vocal, and that makes a change). However it then turned into something more heartfelt. Vocalist Neil Tennant recalled to Pop Justice : "I can remember us being on the Discovery tour in Brazil, and on the last night of the tour we were all on the dancefloor – me, our dancers, Chris Lowe, Chris Heath, in this club in either Sao Paulo or Rio, and it was just . I remember having a very similar experience when we were somewhere during the era when 'Music Sounds Better With You' was out, which is quite a long time ago…"

"You couldn't get enough of that record at the time," he continued. "I remember looking around and everyone was just so happy. Also with 'Vocal', while I didn't do the rave thing in 1988 and 1989, Chris saw the light then and I was thinking of that from his perspective. It's actually a very sincere song."

The video was produced and directed by the filmmaker and photographer Joost Vandebrug. It contains a collection of amateur footage shot at raves in the late 1980s, as well as material filmed in the infamous Haçienda in Manchester.

This was the final track on Electric, the Pet Shop Boys' first independently released album. It was issued through the duo's own x2 label, via Kobalt Label Services.

Electric debuted at #26 on the Billboard 200, the Pet Shop Boys' highest charting album in nearly 20 years. They last went higher with 1993's Very, which arrived and peaked at #20.

Plumb originally penned this song with her longtime producer Matt Bronleewe as a song competition entry for a commercial campaign. She explained to Billboard magazine: "They wanted something hopeful, something summer-y. We came up with a theme of, 'by ourselves we're good, but together we really make a great team.'"

This is a song about mortality and what to do with the time we're here. "This last year," Bareilles said, "I've been thinking about my life on a grander scale. It feels good to me to tap into a higher sense of consciousness."

Bareilles wrote this song with Fun's Jack Antonoff. The pair were introduced through their mutual friend, Sara Quin, one half of twin sister duo Tegan and Sara, who felt the two would hit it off. The first time they sat down to write together, Antonoff played the singer a few demos that he had been working on, one of them being the instrumental for "Brave." Along with "Roots In Stereo," this was one of two tracks from the Testify album that P.O.D. worked on with the Jewish reggae artist Matisyahu. Lead singer Sonny Sandoval said: "This is a Psalm of David. Matis had dug into his Scriptures and chose this one. The lyrics read, 'Even if there would be an army against me, my heart would not fear.' King David placed his heart and trust into the God he believed in. This is a worship song for us."

When Sara Bareilles moved from Los Angeles to New York she fell in love with the city but was forced to relinquish her boyfriend. She laments on this piano ballad:

Reelin' In The Years

This song is about recalling times with a girlfriend and a romantic breakup. It's one of the most popular Steely Dan songs, but also one of their least favorite. In Rolling Stone, September 17, 2009, Donald Fagan said, "It's dumb but effective." Walter Becker added, "It's no fun."

Steely Dan are known for their meticulous sound - every note must be perfect. This song is sometimes criticized for bringing on overly polished mainstream '70s music.

Elliot Randall, who was not a member of Steely Dan, stopped by on an invite from Skunk Baxter while they were recording this and ended up playing the guitar solo. This was one of the first of many times Walter Becker and Donald Fagen would use studio musicians, and by their fourth album, nearly every player was a studio musician. Randall also played on their albums Katy Lied and The Royal Scam.

The quadraphonic mix of this song has extra Elliot Randall guitar fills not heard on the familiar stereo version.

Randall's guitar solo earned high praise from Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page. According to Classic Rock magazine (January 1999), Page has said it is his favorite guitar solo of all time.
