The Crying Game Lyrics

Here we go again, it's the game we love
Sheets all over the floor and they laced with drugs
You ain't play your cards right, you had the Ace of Clubs
Hit you with the Ace of Spade, in your face, and shrugged
Blood drippin' out your arm on my Asian rugs
We was just planning a wedding, caught cagin' doves
You was just tellin' your mans, that you hate the clubs
Now we in The Crying Game, heart laced with slugs

Are you alone?
Do you need someone?
Is it too late to talk?
Did I wait too long?
Thousand words don't change a thing
Is it only three?
Three words that you're missing?

Where did you go?
Couldn't see
I was too busy
Could've just said no
Where would you go?
I think I know

Who?
We're back to playing
We're back to playing
Who?
We're back to playing
The crying game

I could've given everything
Don't wanna let the tears begin
We're back to playing
The crying game
I could've given everything
Don't wanna let the tears begin
We're back to playing
The crying game

Welcome to the crying game where you lose your soul
Where it ain't no easy cash, you got to use the toll
Ain't no cruise control, you 'bout to lose control
Ain't no smilin' faces here, we slammin' doors and dishes
Sayin' we don't miss each other, but it's all fictitious
Sayin' that we had enough, but enough of what?
Another slap to the face, another uppercut
I'm just abusive by nature, not cause I hate ya
Not cause I wanna, guess I wanna imitate ya
I know it's hard, I know I intimidate ya
But is you stayin' or goin'?
I couldn't breathe and you ain't even know it
How come you never show it?
All this love you speak of
All I want is to love and to be loved
(To love and to be loved)

I'm losin' a thing I thought I'd win
And I'm coming undone
Cause the tears don't end

Where did you go?
Couldn't see
I was too busy
Could've just said no
Where would you go?
I think I know

Who?
We're back to playing
We're back to playing
Who?
We're back to playing
The crying game

I could've given everything
Don't wanna let the tears begin
We're back to playing
The crying game
I could've given everything
Don't wanna let the tears begin
We're back to playing
The crying game

Who?
Who?
Who?
Who?

The Crying Game Song Chart
  • Minaj wrote the lyric to this song about her ex-boyfriend Safaree Samuels. The couple had an 11-year relationship, and according to Minaj he wanted to get married, but she wanted to hold off.

Both Minaj and Samuels blame her rise to fame as a catalyst for their split, but for different reasons: Samuels says she started treating him like an employee, and Minaj says he changed when she became so successful.

"This business changed people that I really loved, and it's scary," Minaj said. "They start worshiping material things and forget about good, old-fashioned things like love and trust."

In the song, Minaj acknowledges she is partly to blame for it not working out: "I'm just abusive by nature, not cause I hate ya."
  • This song features a vocal contribution by Jessie Ware. It marks the first time the Trinidadian rapper and British singer have teamed up.
  • This shares its title with a 1992 movie and also its theme song, which was a hit for Boy George.
  • The production duo Pop & Oak sent Minaj the song's demo with Jessie Ware singing. The rapper asked Beyoncé to sing on it but they decided on "Feeling Myself" instead. "There was something so haunting about Jessie Ware's voice," Minaj said. "It had both (ex-boyfriend) Safaree and I in a trance for days."
  • Minaj didn't anticipate writing deeply personal tracks like this one when she set to work on The Pinkprint, but the album ended up being "an emotional roller coaster" for the singer, chronicling her real life ups and downs. "Brokenness leads to art sometimes, and I was really really broken writing this," she said of "The Crying Game."
