  • The first song that Kentucky-born coal miner's daughter Angaleena Presley learned to play on the guitar was "Mama Tried" by Merle Haggard. It was her father who taught the song at the age of 15 and within a year or so Presley was penning her own material.
  • This was the first ever song Presley wrote. She recalled to American Songwriter magazine: "It was so awful. I was a senior in high school and I wrote a song called 'Fairy Tale Land.' It was about me venturing off into the world and leaving my fairy tale life behind. My mom liked it and encouraged me to write more. About 20 songs later I wrote something that made me think, "hmmm … this one might be kinda good."
  • Presley told CMT News she wrote this when she was 16-years-old. "It was about me moving away and going to college and leaving your parents," she explained. "It was awful. I would die if anyone heard it."

    "It was no 'Honky Tonk Girl,' that's for sure," she added.

  • Angaleena's former Kentucky coal miner father, Jimmy Presley, opens the title song of her debut solo album with a personal narrative. Many of the tracks on American Middle Class revolve around the struggles of people working to make ends meet. "You keep doing it. You be proud of it," she told Country Weekly. "I feel like it's a necessary evil. You recognize yourself as one of the heroes of the country."
  • The song features one of Presley's biggest musical heroes, Patty Loveless, whom she met through her fellow Pistol Annies member Miranda Lambert. "They had toured together in Switzerland. She had came out to a Pistol Annies show in Atlanta, and we clicked instantly - like we were kindred spirits," Presley explained to Billboard magazine. "I was at her house one weekend, cooking and singing, and I played her the rough of the record. She gravitated toward 'American Middle Class.' She said it was kind of a modern-day 'Coal Miner's Daughter.' I asked her to sing on it, and she did."
  • Presley explained the song's meaning to Billboard: "It's my story of how I grew up - right at poverty's door," she said. "We were going to fake it till we make it. My mom would cut the little Keds signs and hot-glue them to dollar store shoes so her daughter had Keds and she could hold her head up and be proud until you have something to be proud of. It works."

    "I'm so proud my parents had that work ethic," Presley continued. "They pushed me. They made me go to college, and then I got my degree and said, 'Here, Mom. I'm going to Nashville.' But I have all these stories to write about, and I definitely wouldn't have as many to write about if they hadn't forced me to grow up before I came here.''

  • Presley penned this song with Sarah Siskind, who has also written for Alison Krauss. It finds her venting about her no-good former hubby. "I had gotten pregnant three months after knowing my ex-husband," she recalled to Radio.com . "We were both wild, living the artist lifestyle and I got pregnant and I grew up and he really struggled with it. He just couldn't do it. I went to write that day and I just started venting to [Siskind] because a lot of times writing appointments that's like our therapy. We can't really afford therapy at that stage in our career so we are literally each others' therapists."

    The writing session found Presley expressing her anger to Siskund about her ex. "I'm in there and I'm going, 'I don't know. I've read all these books and I bought a nightgown.' He was a drinker. He loved his beer and he just couldn't figure out how to not do it," she explained. "'I buy the groceries, I wear my lipstick.' And [Siskind's] sitting there going, 'You know that's our song.' And I'm like, 'I'm not writing a song, I just came here to talk."
