This was written by Tony Macaulay, who co-wrote 4 other UK #1s: "Baby Now That I've Found You" for the Foundations, "Let The Heartaches Begin" for Long John Baldry, "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" for Edison Lighthouse and "Silver Lady" for David Soul.

David Soul played Hutch (the blonde) on the TV cop show Starsky & Hutch. Soul was a singer before he became an actor, and recorded folk and pop singles in the early '70s without any success. In desperation he sent a photograph of himself to the top New York entertainment agency William Morris. His ploy of disguising his face with a ski mask caught their imagination and he was immediately contracted to become the Covered Man, the resident singer on the Merv Griffin TV show. After completing the first series of Starsky & Hutch, Soul released an album before teaming up with Tony Macaulay and recording this, which became his first hit single. In the US this remained his only chart entry but in the UK he achieved four more Top 20 singles including another #1 with "Silver Lady" and a #2 with "Going In With My Eyes Wide Open."

Soul: (from 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh): "I made an album in San Francisco for Private Stock but there was nothing suitable for a single. The company told me that Tony Macaulay had some good tunes and he came over and played me Don't Give Up On Us and Going In With My Eyes Wide Open. Within 10 days, I had leant the songs and recorded them and Tony had mixed them and taken them back to England. They bazoomed to the top and they are 2 songs which have stood the test of time."

In the UK, this was the top single of 1977.

White Lightning

This song was written as a dedication to Def Leppard's deceased guitar player Steve Clark after his death in 1991. He was referred to as "White Lightning," as he was always running around the stage, but White lightning can also mean drugs, or your addiction of choice.

In the book MTV Ruled the World - The Early Years of Music Video, guitarist Phil Collen discussed the band's image: "You can say The Police, Madonna, and Michael Jackson, all these really young artists had very definite images. We didn't really consider that we had an image, but I think looking back, we actually did. The Police were kind of from the British punk scene... obviously not really, because they're some of the best pop songs I've ever heard in my life, Sting being just an amazing writer and the band having this great chemistry."

Further on he concludes: "It wasn't a sweaty, greasy, leather metal, which again, is what we actually came from in England... There was something that was a bit more clean-cut than your average Motorhead fan, but it wasn't as glossy as Duran Duran."

Michel Gondry directed the video. He has quite an imagination, and for this song, he had different characters representing different sounds in the song all moving around a circle.

What Sarah Said

Sarah is an acquaintance of lead singer Ben Gibbard. The narrator is the one that is dying. His wife is standing with him waiting for his inevitable death and he is saying that he knew death would come for one of them at some point. She shows her love by standing with him, and he asks her, "who's gonna watch you die?" because he will already be gone.

This song very nearly didn't make the album. Ben Gibbard said on his record label's website: "It stewed for a year and a half."

Gibbard (from his record label's website): "The song was inspired by a friend. She was walking with her husband one day and just burst into hysterical tears because she realized that one day one of the two of them would have to watch the other die."

In an article in Paste magazine, Gibbard wrote: "I feel that songwriters are held to a different standard than almost any other type of writer - some fans get genuinely upset if I admit that a song that they held close to their heart was not based on actual events in my life. Like 'What Sarah Said': I was never in a waiting room in a hospital waiting for news that somebody was going to die. I've been in hospital waiting rooms before, waiting for a doctor's appointment, and I got a sense of the general vibe of the room - not a joyous place - and I decided to set a song there."

Tessie

"Tessie" is a song from the Vaudeville era that became an anthem for the Boston Red Sox baseball team when the Dropkick Murphys recorded it. How did this happen? In our interview with Matt Kelly of the Dropkick Murphys, he explained: "The Red Sox pitched it to us. Dr. Charles Steinberg, who was involved with the Red Sox organization, was also a bit of a baseball historian. And I guess he had been talking with Jeff Horrigan, the sports writer, about how the song 'Tessie' was the unofficial anthem of the Royal Rooters, who were basically turn of the 20th Century Red Sox supporters. They were a supporters club, kind of like hooligans, if you want to put it in a soccer sense. They follow the team around and they even have a band in the stands and taunt the players on the other team. And they'd sing 'Tessie,' which was a Vaudeville hit at the time. It was a song about a woman singing to a parrot. Nothing to do with baseball. So they presented it to us: 'We'd like you to re-do this.' I'm not sure why they picked us, but thank God. We listened and thought, What are we gonna do with this pile of crap tune? If you could only have heard it - it just seemed unusable. So we deconstructed the whole tune, looking at the chord structure, and pieced it back together as maybe a Faces or Rolling Stones kind of live song, obviously with less talent. And then Jeff Horrigan and Ken (Casey), our bass player and fearless leader, got together and re-wrote the lyrics to have to do with the Sox and the Royal Rooters themselves. We recorded it, and it just took off. That was in the 2004 season, which was a very lucky thing for us, because that was, of course, the year that broke the curse. When 'Tessie' stopped being sung in 1918, that was the last year that the Sox had won the World Series, and it came back in 2004.

It was hard work on the team's part, and luck of being in the right place at the right time for us. I would imagine if they'd blown it, that song would be forever known as an awful reminder of those sad times. (laughing) We were extremely lucky. It was awesome, too. We actually played the song in Fenway Park on the hallowed field - you're not even supposed to look at the grass, let alone be on it.

We were in the stands on the July 24, 2004 game where there was a bench-clearing brawl and A-Rod got a little slappy. We got to see these intense games first hand, and it was just ridiculous being able to be involved in that season. It's something to tell your grandkids about, because people waited so long, through so many blown victories, so many near misses. But so many decades and that finally happened. And wow, we were somehow involved. Responsible? No. But involved? Yes."

The Enemy Inside

This punchy and melodic six-minute track was released as the first single from Dream Theater's eponymous twelfth studio album. Guitarist John Petrucci explained why they decided to make this the Progressive Metal band's first self-titled record. "I see every new album as an opportunity to start over," he said, "to either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground. This is the first self-titled album of our career, and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We've fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic."

Petrucci discussed the song with MusicRadar.com : "'The Enemy Inside' is a great example of a song that hits you, it doesn't meander, and it has all of the compositional elements that make us unique," he said. "It has the metal parts, the prog parts, the solos, interludes, choruses – it's all there, but in a more concise way that packs a powerful punch."

"I wanted to write a fast-moving song on the seven-string with a big riff, a huge chorus and really fast, angular movements," Petrucci continued. "The irony is that we never intended for it to be a single, but it just kind of hooked everybody from the beginning. I always thought it would be a deeper cut on the album, more technical and fast, sort of a Panic Attack vibe. But it just turned out to be really catchy."

Asked by Ultimate-Guitar.com to define the kind of guitar sound he was going for on this track, Petrucci replied: "I describe it as a piece of chocolate cake and that was my goal in the studio. It's like I had a nice picture of a layered chocolate cake. Why chocolate cake? Well, chocolate cake is rich, creamy and it has layers. It's sweet but it has a lot of substance and has just the right amount of icing on the top. If you get this nice piece of chocolate cake there's nothing more satisfying than that. So I wanted that in a guitar sound - a chunky, rich, delicious sound (laughs)."

Petrucci told Music Radar regarding his guitar solo: "There's a bunch of different parts to the solo. I try to always keep it interesting, and I want everything to have a musical purpose. The solo comes in a little late; it goes right into the final chorus. It was sort of my job to come out of the previous vocal and get us to the end."

The song's music video was directed by Bill Fishman (the Ramones, Steve Ray Vaughan). The conceptual clip deals with the torment of a soldier who's struggling with reintegrating into his life back home due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Petrucci told Billboard magazine the PTSD subject matter seemed to really fit the song since it's fast-paced and has "kind of machine gun riffs. It almost makes you feel anxious."

He added: "Also at the time that we were in the studio working on the album and I was writing lyrics, the Boston Marathon bombings happened. There was a lot of discussion of terrorism and PTSD as if affects people who witness traumatic events like terrorism, so it was just very on my mind. It linked very well with the mood of the song, and as we started to get into it, I watched some documentaries and things like that. I was like, 'This is really something that needs to be written about.'"

Too Much

Drake debuted this piano-led track during his September 13, 2013 appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The Toronto rapper introduced the tune by saying that the words he was about to spit were out of care. "Before I do this song," he said, "I just want to say to my friends and family, I want the best for everybody and I love you all."

The song is in part a seize-the-day pep talk to a loved one. He raps:

Los Angeles singer-songwriter Jhené Aiko starts off the hook for this conversation between Drake and an old flame by singing: "I love me, I love me enough for the both of us." She explained to Rap Genius that it means: "I love myself enough to know what love actually is … I'm not concerned with you loving me or not…. that has nothing to do with the love I have for you. I am so full of love that I can love you and me… at the same damn time."

Drake mentions some girls from his past including Bria Myles from Macy's and how they inspired his rhymes:

Drake previously spoke about Bria Myles on "Bria's Interlude," a track from his So Far Gone mixtape, where he gives more background to how they met.

The song's melancholic piano riff was played by Chilly Gonzales. Drake first met the Paris-based Canadian pianist and producer through Gonzales' father, who lives in the same building as the Toronto MC. Amongst his other contributions to Drizzy's oeuvre was playing the piano outro on "Marvin's Room."

Drake also raps about "Courtney from Hooters on Peachtree," whom he'd hoped would be "the piece to complete me" until she got engaged to someone else. It didn't take long after the song's release for people to track her down. Courtney Janell works at the Hooters restaurant on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia and has made appearances in several music videos, including The-Dream's "Trilogy," as well as popping up on BET's The Game.

Drake admitted to Vibe magazine that name-checking Courtney in this song was a mistake and a wake-up call. He said: "I've just gotten too big to do that. I never wanted to cause her any stress in her life, and I think she's such a good, wholehearted person. They made up this whole fake flyer online [about] hosting parties, which she doesn't. She's like the best girl ever. It was tough for me to watch that happen. I repeatedly kept apologizing. I didn't think it was that specific—she doesn't even work there anymore."

"I don't want to be looked at as a guy who exploits his relationships, but I feel it's okay because I'm not saying anything negative," Drake added. "I'm just telling the story and usually in their favor, usually saying I was the one that f---ed up. I don't know if I'm ever gonna continue with that formula, but it definitely gives people a more personable listen. And I feel like I've established these characters. Paris Morton is a character—I always check in with Paris, like 'this is happening, this is what it is.' I think people are intrigued, like 'Who is this girl that's your muse? Who is Bria? Why did she get an interlude?' With Courtney I just expected it to go a little better. It got blown out of proportion because she was too accessible. My apologies to her, formally."

Aiko told Radio.com about penning the hook for this Drake song: "I wanted to write something for him that he would like and the first thing I wrote was very personal," she said. "So when I got into the studio with him I laid down the hook, freestyled it. We had instant chemistry."

Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2

The outro to Drake's third album, Nothing Was The Same, features two penetrating verses from Jay Z on the first half of the song. The two superstar rappers previously joined forces on Hov's "Off That" from 2009's The Blueprint 3, and Drizzy's "Light Up" off 2010's Thank Me Later.

"Pound Cake" serves as a lead to the more celebratory "Paris Morton Music 2," where Drake asserts himself above all competition.

Drake's frequent producer Noah "40" Shebib told Rolling Stone that "Paris Morton Music" is exciting for the Toronto MC for a rap standpoint as he's "just getting off bars and different flows, I played it for J. Cole, on some rap buddy-buddy s--t, and he was like, 'Damn!'"

This song's refrain is a scratched-up sample of the hook from Wu-Tang's 1994 single "C.R.E.A.M." (The title stands for "Cash Rules Everything Around Me.")

Paris Morton is the female equivalent of an Aston Martin, whom Drake originally rapped about on his cut, "Paris Morton Music." Drake's verse, where he recalls the time he spent with the black model, was also included on Rick Ross' single "Aston Martin Music."

The song opens with a 35 second speech sample of the late jazzman Jimmy Smith. It was taken by the producer/DJ duo Christian Rich from "Jimmy Smith Rap," a track from his 1982 Off the Top album. Jimmy Smith's estate filed a lawsuit in April 2014 claiming Drake never got permission to use the sample, despite liner notes indicating that it had been approved.

Speaking during a CRWN interview with Hip-Hop journalist Elliott Wilson, Drake revealed that "Pound Cake" was originally recorded when he was working with Beyoncé, and Jay-Z originally penned his two verses for Magna Carta… Holy Grail. For the first time in his career, Jay sent Drake the acapellas of his pair of rhymes to use, and then Bio-1da and Noah "40" Shebib got to work on the beat.

Hova took the opportunity to stunt on Drake when he spits at the beginning of his first verse, "I had Benzes before you had braces." "I think Jay still gets his first line off there," Drake joked to MTV News. "He always takes his opportunity to remind me that he is the true big homey."

"With that said, sometimes I'll set out and have something different in mind for Jay, like, 'I wanna be in the club with Hov on this album'...but we always just end up rapping," he added. "I love rapping with that guy so much that it's tough to go in any different direction."

Drake described the song as the follow up to "Light Up," which, at the time, found Jay dropping some knowledge on his "lil bro." "This feature is part 2 to 'Light Up,' said Drake to MTV News. "A lot of the songs on this album are updates and while he was working on Magna Carta I was able to work get that song [from him]."

This samples Ellie Goulding's Halcyon track, "Don't Say a Word." Boi-1da recalled: "My producer Jordan Evans brought the Ellie Goulding sample to me and I was like, 'this is perfect.' Nothing sounds better than Ellie Goulding singing in the background while Jay Z is rapping."

Drake originally planned to release two versions of Nothing Was the Same. The second version that we never got to hear was meant to play in the reverse order starting with "Pound Cake." "It was a cool, different listening experience," Drake told Vibe magazine. "We never brought it into fruition; I think it was some iTunes [issue] or something like that."

This emotional song finds Drake describing an on-off poisonous relationship with a girl. Despite the fact that she is constantly running around the city partying and communication is a problem, he keeps finding ways to justify staying with her. "That one hits you in the heart," Drake told Rolling Stone. "It's painful and beautiful at the same time."

Drake used to drive around in his uncle's drop top Lexus before he was signed. He refers to this in the lyric, "My uncle say, 'You drive my whip like it's yours.'" The Toronto rapper also discussed this memory on "Started from the Bottom" when he rapped: "And my uncle calling me like 'Where ya at? I gave you the keys told ya bring it right back."

Scottish producer Hudson Mohawke supplied the beat. He also helped create the soundscapes on a couple of Kanye West's Yeezus tracks, "I Am a God" and "Blood On The Leaves." In addition, Mohawke released a self-titled EP as one half of the duo TNGHT with Canadian producer Lunice. The pair lent one of its beats to Lil Wayne for the I Am Not a Human Being Part II track, "Lay It Down."

The Toronto poet Kenza Samir helped Drake write this song. She recalled: "When I texted him, 'Isn't it amazing, how you talk all that s--- and still we lack communication,' he was like, 'Are you talking to me about me right now or is that for the song?'"

Speaking to Vibe Magazine, Drake was asked how he came up with such lines as: "Wish you would learn to love people and use things and not the other way around." He replied: "I just have a folder of lines. It's usually from conversations. I'll open up and see the last thing that I wrote down. [Scrolls phone] Like this'll probably never get used: 'I'm not gullible, I just trust you.' Someone must have said that to me. I kinda just write down these lines."

"Who helped me write on 'Connect' is this girl Kenza," Drake added. "She's a great girl and a phenomenal poetry writer. We just sit together and come up with the best way to say things. Actually, me and her did [the lyric] 'love people and use things and not the other way around.' It's cool to get another creative mind in there, just someone who's thinking solely about the words and not the melodies and placement. It's nice to read her poetry sometimes, I'll take from that."

It was the first vocal-less track the band had recorded since "Stream of Consciousness" from their 2003 LP, Train of Thought.

Guitarist John Petrucci explained to Ultimate-Guitar.com that the band were trying to set a mood with an instrumental track. "It's kinda like the idea was when we play live and before we hit the stage, we like to have some sort of like you said dramatic piece of music and something cinematic to bring us onstage," he said. "We've used the music from Psycho before and Hans Zimmer. The last tour was a piece from the movie Inception and just stuff that really sets the mood and you know the band's coming onstage. It was kinda like, 'Well, let's write our own. We can do this. How hard could it be?' So we wrote our own cinematic opening and the cool thing is it has real strings on it and it has that cinematic vibe but it's in the style of metal and it's kind of a progressive version of it. It's our spin on that type of opening."

The strings were arranged by Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess. They were played by a string ensemble, who were conducted by a young protégé of Rudess, Eren Basbug.

The second instrumental on Dream Theater following "False Awakening Suite," they were the first vocal-less tracks the band had recorded since "Stream of Consciousness" on their 2003 album, Train of Thought.

Guitarist John Petrucci told Ultimate-Guitar.com that it was inconceivable that the band couldn't have made the album without his JP13 guitar. He explained: "In a rock band or a metal band whatever, the guitar sounds kind of dictates the way the album is gonna sound. Because it's a featured instrument and it takes up so much and it will sort of shape the direction and overall sound of the song. If it's really heavy, percussive and aggressive, that's the way the song is gonna sound. It's a very powerful instrument because it dictates the landscape you're setting up. So that guitar and especially the 7-string version of it. I used on a lot of songs on the album. You can hear it on the instrumental 'Enigma Machine' and when that 7-string comes in it's just so heavy and huge. That couldn't have been done with another instrument - it had to sound like that."

Keyboardist Jordan Rudess' main riff came to him in his sleep the night before the band wrote the song. He recalled to MusicRadar.com : "I was running everything in my mind, 'it's gotta be catchy, it's gotta be progressive, there should be a theme,' all of that, and there it was! Behind The Veil

Keyboardist Jordan Rudess told the story of the song's creation to MusicRadar.com : "The intro was a lot of fun because I got to do my thing," he said. "It started out kind of orchestral, but then we thought that maybe we should go in another direction. People left it up to me somewhat, everybody was pretty busy with some other things, so I started working on a cinematic idea but one that wasn't orchestral; it would be more otherworldly."

"It wasn't going to use violins or trumpets or French horns," Rudess continued. "But it was going to use these other beautiful sounds. I called upon the Alchemy program because it has this Dream Voices collection of sounds. I had such a good time in the studio with Rich, just finding all of these sounds and saying, 'Oh, that's a great one. Let's record that.' And each sound would start to change the music and dictate where things were going. This song allowed me to use the Roli Seaboard, too, so I was able to call up some otherworldly sounds and instruments, as well."

"This song is another good example of what happens very naturally with us." concluded Rudess. "Dream Theater is something of a musical melting pot, so it makes sense and feels right for us to have a lot of different styles happening on top of each other. That feels more right than having something that is just one thing, one approach, throughout."
