Don't Go Back To Rockville Lyrics

Looking at your watch a third time waiting in the station for a bus
Going to a place that's far, so far away and if that's not enough
Going where nobody says hello, they don't talk to anybody they don't know
You'll wind up in some factory that's full time filth and nowhere left to go
Walk home to an empty house, sit around all by yourself
I know it might sound strange, but I believe
You'll be coming back before too long

[Chorus]
Don't Go Back To Rockville,
Don't go back to Rockville,
Don't go back to Rockville
And waste another year

At night I drink myself to sleep and pretend
I don't care if you're not here with me
'Cause it's so much easier to handle
All my problems if I'm too far out to sea
But something better happen soon
Or it's gonna be too late to bring you back

[Chorus]

It's not as though I really need you
If you were here I'd only bleed you
But everybody else in town only wants to bring you down and
That's not how it ought to be
I know it might sound strange, but I believe
You'll be coming back before too long

[Chorus: x2]

Don't Go Back To Rockville
  • This is about Ingrid Schorr, a girl the band knew at the University of Georgia whose hometown was Rockville, Maryland. She got a lot of attention on campus as classmates lamented her departure.
  • This is one of the few R.E.M. songs where bass player Mike Mills wrote most of the lyrics and sings the lead vocal.
  • The band had already been playing this song in a much faster, punk-like style for a long time and didn't even consider it for the Reckoning album until their legal advisor, Bertis Downs, begged them to "at least do one take of it for me ... please!?!?"

Drummer Bill Berry remembers tweaking the song to mess with Downs: "To playfully suggest to him that the song wasn't in contention, we recorded a much slower version than he was accustomed to hearing and we sprinkled it with a Nashville twang to drive the point home. It started out silly, but when Mike added piano, the tune took on new light. Thanks, Bert!" (Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011)

    Skin Lyrics

Sarah Beth is scared to death
To hear what the doctor will say
    She hasn't been well
Since the day that she fell

And the bruises just won't go away
So she sits and see waits with her mother and dad
    Flips through an old magazine
'Til a the nurse with a smile

    Stands at the door
And says will you please come with me

Sarah Beth is scared to death
Cause the doctor just told her the news
Between the red cells and white
    Something's not right
But we're gonna take care of you

Six chances in ten it won't come back again
With the therapy were gonna try
    It's just been approved
    It's the strongest there is
I think we caught it in time

    Sarah Beth closes her eyes
    She dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love is holding her close
And the soft wind in blowing her hair

Sarah Beth is scared to death
As she sits holding her mom
Says it would be a mistake
    For someone to take
A girl with no hair to the prom

Oh, just this morning right there on her pillow
Was the cruelest of any surprise
And she cried when she gathered it all in her hands
The proof that she couldn't deny

    Sarah Beth closes her eyes
    She dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love was holding her close
And the soft wind is blowing her hair

    Its quarter to seven
    That boys at the door
And her daddy ushers him in
And when he takes off his cap
    They all start to cry
Cause this mornin' where his hair had been
    Softly she touches just Skin

    And they go dancin'
Around and around without any cares
And her very first true love was holding her close
And for a moment she isn't scared

  • This song's lyrics came from Anthony Burgess' classic book A Clockwork Orange, which was also made into a popular movie. "Durango Number 95" is the car they drive to a weird shack with a sign saying "HOME" on it; "Horrorshow" is the book's teenage slang (known as Nadsat) for "good."
  • "Krovvy" is Nadsat for "Blood."
  • This song was WWE wrestler Edge's theme for quite some time. It was also featured on WWE Smackdown Here Comes The Pain for the PS2.

    Go Or Go Ahead Lyrics

Thank you for the bitter knowledge
Guardian angels who left me stranded
It was worth it, feeling abandoned
Makes one hardened but what has happened to love

You got me writing lyrics on postcards
Then in the evening looking at the stars
But the brightest of the planets is Mars

Then what has happened to love
So I will opt for the big white limo
    Vanity fairgrounds and rebel angels
You can't be trusted with feathers so hollow
Your heaven's inventions, steel eyed vampires of love

You see over me, I'll never know
What you have shown to other eyes
Go Or Go Ahead and surprise me
Say you've lead the way to a mirage

Go or go ahead and just try me
Nowhere's now here smelling of junipers
Fell off the hay bales, I'm over the rainbows

But oh Medusa kiss me and crucify
This unholy notion of the mythic power of love
Look in her eyes, look in her eyes

Forget about the ones that are crying
Look in her eyes, look in her eyes
Forget about the ones that are crying

    Agnus Dei
  • The song's title and all of its lyrics are Latin. "Agnus Dei" is a movement from a mass (older composers write many of these) and literally means:
    (Lamb of God) Agnus Dei
(qui tollis peccata mundi) who takes away the sins of the world
(dona nobis pachem) grant us peace.
  • In this song, Wainwright is asking for clemency from people who attack him and his music.
  • This is essentially a Classical song. It is a setting of the text of one movement from a mass done by Wainwright.
  • This is in Bb minor, which is a very rare key.
  • Wainwright did the string arrangement himself.
  • The creaking at the beginning is actually a violin (though Wainwright agrees that it sounds like a fart). It was created by pressing down about a quarter of the way up a string and rubbing the string along the fingerboard while damping the string with the pinky.

I used to think that I could not go on
And life was nothing but an awful song
But now I know the meaning of true love
I'm leaning on the everlasting arms

If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

    I Believe I Can Fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day (Night and day)
Spread my wings and fly away
    I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
    I believe I can fly
    I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly hoo

See I was on the verge of breaking down
Sometimes silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first I know it starts inside of me, ho oh

If I can see it hoo, then I can be it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

    I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky

    I Believe I Can Fly
  • Kelly wrote this for Space Jam, which was a kid's movie starring Michael Jordan in a world of cartoons (including Bugs Bunny). The song was much more popular than the movie and became an inspirational anthem often played at weddings and used in video tributes.
  • Kelly got an early copy of the movie to view for inspiration. According to Rolling Stone magazine, Kelly said: "I studied it and I prayed over it because I wanted the best thing to come out of it."
  • This won 1997 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television.
  • Kelly may claim that he believes he can fly in this song, but in reality the R&B superstar has a chronic fear of air travel. Kelly is so scared of planes that he even takes boats when he tours Europe.
  • Speaking to The Boombox , Kelly revealed his creative process for this song: "When I met Michael Jordan on a basketball court at an athletic club - we hooped together in Chicago - he came to me and asked me if I wanted to do a song for his upcoming movie. I was like, 'Yeah!' I didn't even ask what it was. [Eventually] he let me know what it was, we went to a screening to watch it and that's when I ended up coming up with 'I Believe I Can Fly.' I knew from the first melody that was gonna be the song that was gonna take me out of R&B and into another genre of music."

Kelly added that the Notorious B.I.G. came around while he was writing the song and immediately saw its hit potential. "I was in a hotel in a deep sleep, so I kinda dreamt that melody," he recalled. "I went down to the lobby and had the security unlock the piano because it was locked. I started messing around with three-finger chords to give myself a guide with the melody. And I started hearing… [hums the melody of 'I Believe I Can Fly']. I had a lot of 'duh duh duhs' before I actually wrote what it is. But after spending two hours at that piano, watching a whole 'lotta women and men coming in back and forth, I was over in that corner on that piano. By the time Biggie came in [the hotel] it was like two hours later, I had [begins singing] 'I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky, I think about it every night and day, spread my wings and fly away' - I had about that much. He was like, 'Oh, B, that's a big hit, son.' And it ended up being exactly that."
  • Kelly co-directed the music video with Hype Williams. For most of the clip, Kelly sings in a cornfield but he eventually meets a choir in an auditorium. Scenes from Space Jam are also shown on a screen in the background.

Oh Oh I Love Her So
  • The music was inspired by the Freddy Cannon song "Palisades Park," which was later recorded by the Ramones for their Brain Drain album. Perky songs from the '50s and '60s were a big influence on the group.
  • Running just 1:56 and with a very compact chorus, this song tells a story about falling in love by the soda machine at Burger King. The Ramones brand of punk rock was not so much about rebellion, but about presenting a different view. As such, their love songs were rather innocent, with endearing lines like "no one's gonna ever tear us apart cause she's my sweetheart."

    Pinhead
  • Part of this song was inspired by a 1932 horror movie the band saw when they were on tour in Ohio in 1976. The movie was called Freaks, and the band saw it in an art house theater. At the end of the movie, there's a scene where the sideshow freaks rise up and take over, shouting, "We accept you, one of us, Gooble Gooble." This gave The Ramones the idea for their "Gabba Gabba Hey!" chant, which became their trademark phrase and a rallying cry for their fans.
  • Studio engineer Ed Stasium (from Hey! Ho! Let's Go! The Ramones Anthology by David Fricke): "We had fun with 'Pinhead.' They had this 'Gabba gabba hey' chant and I started messing with the vari-speed control on the tape machine, just as a joke. I'd speed it up and slow it down, and Dee Dee's going 'This is cool!.' It ended up being on the record. You can hear a little chipmunk voice going 'Gabba gabba.'"
  • A track from the second Ramones album, this song is about a dimwit who sees a nurse he fancies. The group didn't spend much time developing stories in their songs, and often sung about various mental disorders. Not everyone was in on the joke, but they were not out to offend: they just thought this stuff was funny.
  • The children's TV series Yo Gabba Gabba! borrowed its title from the Ramones' "Gabba Gabba Hey" chant.

    To Be A Pilgrim Lyrics

    To Be A Pilgrim
  • Also known by its first line "He Who Would Valiant Be," this hymn is an adaptation by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958).

The Pilgrim's Progress was published in 1678 by John Bunyan (1628-88); the poem "To Be A Pilgrim" is extracted from that work. Vaughan Williams collected a melody from a Mrs. Verral of the Sussex hamlet Monk's Gate, and also from a Mrs. Weobley of Herefordshire five years later. The instrumental is sometimes known as "Monk's Gate"; the words used in standard hymn books are also slightly different from the original by John Bunyan.
  • "He Who Would Valiant Be" was chosen by Margaret Thatcher to be sung at her funeral, which took place in April 2013. If nothing else, this was an improvement on "Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead," which after a sustained campaign by anti-Thatcherites reached #2 in the UK chart at that time.

Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue
  • Bass player Dee Dee Ramone wrote this song, which is about sniffing glue, a cheap and easy way to kill some brain cells. This is a pastime of bored teenage boys with bad judgment.
  • Running just 1:34, this song has minimalist lyrics driven by a propulsive beat. The words are simply these lines repeated three times:

Now I wanna sniff some glue
Now I wanna have somethin' to do
All the kids wanna sniff some glue
All the kids want somethin' to do
  • The Ramones didn't really want folks to sniff glue. Tommy Ramone explained in Hey! Ho! Let's Go! The Ramones Anthology by David Fricke: "I have a feeling Dee Dee was talking about his childhood, how he actually thought it was some kind of release when he was a kid. I thought of it as a parody. He might have been a little more serious."

Johnny Ramone added: "We couldn't write about love or cars, so we sang about this stuff, like glue sniffing. We thought it was funny. We thought we could get away with anything."
  • This is one of the tracks on the Ramones first album. On their follow-up, they included a song called "Carbona Not Glue," which is about graduating to cleaning solvent for a cheap high.

    Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment
  • Joey Ramone (from Hey! Ho! Let's Go! The Ramones Anthology by David Fricke): "'Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment' we all pretty much wrote together in Arturo's (Vega, the band's artistic director) loft. There was another loft where we rehearsed; we used to let Tommy live there. I remember it had fruit flies. Horrible things."
  • A track from the Ramones second album, this song runs a loud, fast, 1:38. It's about a guy who is losing his mind and wants a good helping of shock treatment to make him feel better. Like most Ramones songs, it's meant to be fun and also to provide relief from the disco music that was permeating the culture.
  • Per Gessle from Roxette recorded his own version of this song, which he included on the B-side of his 2002 cover of another Ramones song, "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend."

    [Chorus]

I'd really like to help you, man
I'd really like to help you, man
    Nervous messed up marionettes
Floating around on a prison ship

If you try the best you can
You can try the best you can
The best you can is good enough
You can try the best you can
You try the best you can

    Dinosaurs roaming the Earth
    Dinosaurs roaming the Earth
    Dinosaurs roaming the Earth

    Optimistic
  • During live performances, Thom Yorke has sung this version of the chorus:
"You can try the best you can, you can try the best you can. The best you can ain't good enough."

  • Yorke revealed in 2003 that the song's chorus ("You can try the best you can. You can try the best you can. The best you can is good enough.") came from words of encouragement he received from his partner, Rachel Owen. He was worried that "nothing we'd done was releasable."

    Talk Show Host Lyrics

    I want to
I want to be someone else or I'll explode
Floatin' upon this surface for the birds
    The birds
    The birds

    You want me?
Fuckin' well, come and find me
    I'll be waitin'
With a gun and a pack of sandwiches
    And nothin'
    Nothin'
    Nothin'

    You want me?
Well, come and break the door down
    You want me?
Fuckin' come and break the door down
    I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready
    I'm ready,
    I'm ready

    Talk Show Host
  • This has never been released on any official Radiohead album. It was released as a B-side to the single "Street Spirit (Fade Out)," the last track of their 1995 album The Bends. It also appears on the Australian compilation CD: Triple J's "J Files Presents The Greatest B-Sides of All Time".
  • This figured prominently in a key scene of Baz Luhrman's 1996 film William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet. Another Radiohead song, "Exit Music (for a Film)" plays over the closing credits of the same movie.

    Different Strings Lyrics

Who's come to slay the dragon
    Come to watch him fall
Making arrows out of pointed words
    Giant killers, at the call
    Too much fuss and bother
    Too much contradiction
    And confusion
    Peel away the mystery
Here's a clue to some real motivation

    All there really is
    The two of us
And we both know why we've come along
    Nothing to explain
    It's a part of us
To be found within a song

    What happened to our innocence
Did it go out of style?
    Along with our naivete?
    No longer a child
    Different eyes see different things
    Different hearts
    Beat on Different Strings
    But there are times
    For you and me
    When all such things agree

  • This song's lyrics were written solely by Geddy Lee. It's the last Rush song in which Neil Peart does not have lyric credit.
  • The song reminds us to choose our words carefully. Do not ruin what we have. Be kind, as we all see life just a bit differently, yet we're all the same.

    Fake Plastic Trees Lyrics

Her green plastic watering can for
    her fake Chinese rubber plant
    In the fake plastic earth

What she bought from a rubber man
In a town full of rubber bands
    to get rid of itself

It wears her out, it wears her out
It wears her out, it wears her out

She lives with a broken man
    A cracked polystyreneman
    Who just crumbles and burns

    He used to do surgery
    For girls in the eighties
    But gravity always wins

And it wears him out, it wears him out
It wears him out, it wears him

She Looks like the real thing
She tastes like the real thing
    My fake plastic love

But I can't help the feeling
I could blow through the ceiling
If I just turn and run

And it wears me out, it wears me out
It wears me out, it wears me out

If i could be who you wanted
If i could be who you wanted all the time, all the time

    Fake Plastic Trees
  • According to Thom Yorke, this is a song about an area in east London called Canary Wharf, which was built on unused wasteland by the docks of the Thames. The area was supposed to be a major business district, but it was hurt by a market downturn in the '90s. Canary Wharf was landscaped with a lot of artificial plants, which is where the title came from.
  • In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Yorke said that this was the song where he found his lyrical voice. He cut the vocal, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, in one take, then the band filled in its parts around him. Yorke said the song began as "A very nice melody which I had no idea what to do with, then you wake up and find your head singing some words to it."
  • This was featured in the 1995 film Clueless.
  • The band were finding it difficult to nail this song and decided to take a break and catch a Jeff Buckley gig at Highbury. When they returned to the studio mesmerized by Buckley's set, Yorke sang the song twice before breaking down into tears.
  • According to Q magazine April 2008, Jonny Greenwood played on this an old Hammond organ, whose tone controls required resetting after every bar.

    Beautymark
  • This song is about Rufus' mother, Kate McGarrigle. According to Wainwright, they commonly make songs that are about each other, and this was in response to McGarrigle's "First Born" (A song about Rufus). Some lines that refer to her: "I never had your black hair, and hazel eyes," "I had no radio shows nor did I have homemade clothes, homemade curtains of the same material." The song ends very happily when Rufus decides "I may not be so manly, but still I know you love me, even if I don't have your beauty mark."

I Walk The Line Revisited Lyrics

I'm back on board that '49 Ford in 1956
Long before the sun came up way out in the sticks
The headlight showed a two rut roadway, back up in the pines
First time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I got my thrill behind the wheel upon my daddy?s lap
Grandpa rode co-pilot with a flashlight and a map
Cane pole out the window it was in the summertime
First time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

I never will forget that day, I know the time and place
Sounded like the whole thing came right down from outer space
I still can see those headlights and that dashboard in my mind
The first time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day's through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line

All these long years later it's still music to my ears
I swear it sounds as good right now as anything I hear
I've seen the Mona Lisa, I've heard Shakespeare read real fine
Just like hearing Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've know proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line

Because you're mine, I walk the line

    I Walk The Line Revisited
  • Crowell wrote this about how Johnny Cash's song "I Walk The Line" changed his life when he first heard it as a kid. He was married to Cash's daughter Rosanne from 1979-1992 and produced most of her early work.
  • Crowell got Cash to sing the chorus from "I Walk the Line" for the song.
