Lived a Lie

This is the first cut to be lifted from You Me At Six's fourth studio album, Cavalier Youth. It was the British band's first release following their new album deal with BMG.

You Me At Six worked on the song in Los Angeles with Neal Avron, who has worked with notable artists such as All Time Low, Forever the Sickest Kids and Yellowcard. The song was premiered on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show September 2, 2013.

Speaking with Kerrang! Magazine, vocalist Josh Franceschi explained the background to the song and why they incorporated marching band style drumming and gang vocals. "Through the last six years there would always be people who said, 'Oh I don't think you can do that.' But we always believed in ourselves even if nobody else did," he said. "Marching goes hand in hand with showing unity and 'we are believers' was a line that really needed to be exaggerated for people to get the point. Five people against the world – as corny as that sounds."

The song features on the soundtrack for the FIFA 14 computer game.

Francheschi explained to Kerrang! how the song came together: "We were listening to a lot of pop music," he said, "so we were like, 'We've got to make a big hooky chorus, without it being lame.' Matt (Barnes, bass) said, 'I'm not going to play for the whole first verse,' so, when the bass comes in, it sounds really big."

Franchesci told Kerrang! the lyrics are about being in You Me at Six. "At that time, everything was great in our little bubble," he said. "Then as soon as we went out of that bubble, we were like, 'What the f--- are we going to do?' It's about how, in music and life, you only really need to believe in yourself."

You Me at Six scored their first UK #1 album when Cavalier Youth topped the chart in its debut week.

Fresh Start Fever

This was the second single to be released from You Me At Six's fourth studio album, Cavalier Youth. Speaking with Kerrang! magazine, vocalist Josh Franceschi told the story of of this song. "When we started writing in the cottage we rented in Henley, Oxfordshire, we discussed how the album didn't yet have a song that represented what our band had been about until that point," he said. "We wanted to write a big pop-rock song, with exaggerated verses and a jump-up-and-down chorus."

"Neal (Avron, producer) brought all of his expertise of programmed drums and strings and horns, which gave the song a more layered texture," Franceschi added. "There is a group chant thing in the verse as well that was inspired more by hip-hop artists that we were listening to at the time."

This won Best Single at the 2014 Kerrang! Awards.

Franceschi told Kerrang!: "We wanted to start a new chapter. That's what this is about – moving forward."

Vocalist Josh Franceschi explained to Kerrang! magazine: "For me, burying the hatchet with people after there's been an issue has been something that I found difficult, and this song addresses that."

Rather than having an upbeat chorus the band slowed it down, made Chris Miller's guitar part very simple, and let the groove and the drums carry the chorus. Franceschi told Kerrang! that it's, "a sound we've never really created before."

This was a song that guitarist Max Helyer brought to the band. Vocalist Josh Franceschi recalled to Kerrang! magazine: "The rest of us didn't really get at first, but when we caught up with where he was coming from, we all fell in love with it. It's about accepting things won't always go your way, and it's got a really grungy vibe."

Franchesci added: "I recorded the vocals through a special microphone that helped capture the angst in it, and we recorded some of the drum parts on an iPhone in a basement to get a certain distorted sound."

Vocalist Josh Franceschi explained the background of the song to Kerrang! magazine: "Lyrically, it deals with the people we knew when we were younger," he said. "Whenever we came back off tour, we'd go to a bar and there'd be 20 or 30 of our mates. As you get older, your world gets smaller, and you long for those days, but you recognize there was an element of falseness to it. I got a lot of things off my chest here."

Vocalist Josh Franceschi told Kerrang! magazine: "This is the biggest departure on the album what the band normally do. We didn't really feel it would work as a full song, so we made it into a little interlude."

He added: "It's a love song about accepting your partner for who they are."

When Franceschi was laying down his vocals, producer Neal Avron (Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory) felt he wasn't chilled out enough, so the vocalist sarcastically offered to record them sitting outside. Avron took the bait and Franceschi recalled that he, "ended up sitting on a rocking chair in the garden, petting his dog and singing!"

This is the closing track of You Me At Six's fourth album, Cavalier Youth. The band's singer, Josh Franceschi, told Kerrang! magazine: "I did a lot of takes with 'Wild Ones' before everybody was happy with it. In the past, I'd write my lyrics, record them and say, 'right, finished.' It wasn't an open forum. This time we were a lot more open. We wanted the other guys to push us, and the lyrics you hear on this song were actually we recorded on my birthday. Originally I'd taken it off, and I was going to go spend the day with my girlfriend! That shows the desire we had to make the best album we possibly could."
