Thick as a Brick Song Chart

This was the only song on the album. Side 1 was "part 1," running 22:31, and side 2 was "part 2," clocking in at 21:05. Each side was over 20 minutes long.

A radio edit, running just 3:01, was sent to radio stations and is the version used on most compilation albums. Speaking with us in 2013, Ian Anderson explained: "back in 1972, you had to be aware of what was then called AOR radio - it was a delicate beast. It could only in most cases manage to play music that was in bite size portions. So we had to think about giving the option to American radio playing little edited sections of 'Thick As A Brick,' so they didn't have to delicately drop the needle into the middle of a long track or lift it off after the three and a half minutes. So we did that specially for American radio.

It was never released publicly in that form, but in limited editions which were sent out to radio stations in the US, which is the only place where the record got played, anyway. It never got played in the UK or anywhere in Europe, it was just not that kind of music."

"Thick as a brick" is a phrase meaning stubbornly dumb, as one's head is so thick that no new thoughts can enter it. The song starts with Ian Anderson expressing his low expectations for his target ("I may make you feel but I can't make you think") before singing about class structures, conformity, and the rigid moralistic beliefs of the establishment that perpetuates it.

The song follows a young boy who sees two career paths: soldier and artist. He chooses the life of a soldier, just like his father. We see him assimilate into the society he once rebelled against, becoming just like his dad.

With minimal meddling, the album took only two weeks to record, and was written in less than a month. The packaging was designed to look like a small-town newspaper called the St. Cleve Chronicle and Linwell Advertiser. When opened, the album revealed 12 pages of newspaper stories, making innovative use of the square foot of sleeve space with a fold-out so the Chronicle measured 12"x16".

Under the headline "Thick As A Brick," we learn that an 8-year-old boy genius named Gerald Bostock wrote the lyrics for a poetry competition, but was disqualified on moral grounds by the governing body, The Society for Literary Advancement and Gestation (SLAG). According to the story, Ian Anderson of the "Major Beat Group" Jethro Tull read the poem and wrote 45 minutes of "pop music" to accompany it.

The newspaper also contained ads, recipes, TV listings, a crossword puzzle, and a review of the album. Jethro Tull wasn't the first to use the newspaper theme for album art: The Four Seasons 1969 album Genuine Imitation Life Gazette was made to look like a newspaper with lyrics to the songs appearing as stories. It even had a comics-section insert.

In 2012, Ian Anderson recorded a sequel called Thick As A Brick 2 - Whatever Happened To Gerald Bostock? The album presents various outcomes for the now 48-year-old Bostock, including banker, preacher, soldier, and shop owner. Anderson says the album examines how "our own lives develop, change direction and ultimately conclude through chance encounters and interventions, however tiny and insignificant they might seem at the time."

Anderson had never performed the original Thick As A Brick in its entirety, but later in 2012, he began a tour where he played the entire album and its sequel.

This continued an experimental phase for Jethro Tull. Their previous album, Aqualung, was considered a "concept" album, with characters and themes continuing from one song to the next. This was considered "progressive" rock, with very obtuse lyrics and a great deal of production. This song seems to be a commentary on modern society and the human condition.

In 2001, this was used in a Hyundai commercial. Group leader Ian Anderson recorded a new version for the spot to avoid having other musicians butcher his song, as is often the case in commercials. He improvised an outro which he felt was the best part, but it was edited out. Anderson does not drive a Hyundai. He calls himself a "professional passenger."

In the digital age, an album containing just one song doesn't fit the download model. When the 40th Anniversary Special Edition was released in 2012, Ian Anderson divided the album into 8 different pieces that could be sold individually on iTunes and Amazon as $1.29 songs with titles like "The Poet and the Painter" and "See There a Man Is Born/Clear White Circles." "Some artists choose not to do that - famously Pink Floyd - and don't want to have their music unbundled to offer it in song length pieces," Anderson told us. "But I accept that that's the musical appetite of most folks these days. They don't really have the time or the concentration to listen to a whole album in one go. They want it in manageable pieces."

Jeremy Camp shared the personal story behind this song with NewReleaseTuesday : "A couple of years ago I released a book called I Still Believe," he explained. "From that, I shared more in-depth about what the Lord has done in my life, and more and more people have shared their stories with me. They have asked me questions about how I've managed with what I've been through, and they want to know how to deal with their issues."

Xanadu Song Chart

The word Xanadu showed up in the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834). Xanadu is the fictional name of the land where Khubla Khan ordered the dome to be built. The word Xanadu came to mean a paradise. In the movie Citizen Kane, Xanadu was the name of Charles Foster Kane's house.

This was written for the movie musical of the same name. Newton-John starred in the film with Gene Kelly. The movie was a bomb, but the soundtrack, which contained all songs by Newton-John and The Electric Light Orchestra, was a hit.

In the trailer for the film, Olivia-Newton John is billed as "the girl you loved in Grease." This song plays over the end of the trailer. Quite a bit is made of the singing and dancing and starring cast, not much is mentioned about the plot.

Newton-John recorded this with The Electric Light Orchestra. Although the song is noted for being performed with Olivia Newton John for the movie Xanadu, The Electric Light Orchestra had in fact performed the song with Jeff Lynne taking over the lyrics in a more mellow sounding vocal to Olivia's operatic sounding voice. For those of you who have heard of this film's reputation but not yet seen it, you might be asking yourself, "What on earth is so terrible about it?" It's famous for being a box-office flop, but what, did it stink all over? And you might even go hunting down reviews online, only to find a queue of user reviews on IMDB defending it for dear life and crying that it's not that bad.

Here's the gist of it:

The concept, story, and overall dialog is pathetic, even though everything else is great.

They blew $20 million cool ones on the budget for this in 1980! Consider that Star Wars, released just three years previously, had a budget of $11 million. And there's no way Xanadu would have outsold The Force, even with dialogue by Shakespeare.

It's basically a roller-disco fantasy made at a time when (a) disco, (b) roller-skating, and (c) fantasy all became as dead as fried chicken. It was the dawn of the '80s; Reagan was in office and people wanted either hard sci-fi or down-home country folk, and it was time for heavy metal and greed.

The studio executives made bone-headed decisions slapping this together, like with the animated sequence in the middle which just confused the bejabbers out of everybody. It was basically just thrown in for the sole purpose of Universal thumbing their nose at Disney.

Key words from above point: "slapped together." Including one each of every kind of music genre. The whole thing plays like it was built by sugar-hyped six-year-olds who couldn't resist gluing on "one more cool thing," whether it fit or not.

Nevertheless, it is a guilty pleasure, Olivia sings her sweet little heart out, Gene dances up a storm, ELO rocks out, and it's all now an interesting historical period piece with a modern-day cult following.

The One Song Chart

This anthemic tune was written the night before Kodaline engineer Phil Magee's wedding, and performed for the first time at the ceremony. "There were only 100 people there but it was scarier than playing Glastonbury," vocalist Stephen Garrigan told Q magazine.

Garrigan wrote the song for the happy couple as a last minute wedding present. "Like an idiot, I left writing it until the night before," he recalled.

Other songs originally written as wedding presents, which became successful releases in their own right include "The Day Before You" by Rascal Flatts and "Love Song" by The Cure.

Kodaline hadn't planned to record this for their Coming Up For Air album. During a gig in Toronto, a fan proposed to his fiancée onstage. She said yes, so Kodaline played Phil Magee's wedding song to mark the occasion. Some fans at that Toronto concert recorded their own version of the song and put it up on YouTube. Kodaline were so pleased with it, they decided to record the tune. Garrigan told Radio.com : "It's weird that it took somebody covering our own song to actually make us think about recording it and putting it on the album. That was definitely a first."

This is a "confession" of Jim Morrison's aims in life. To the end of the night was his aim through many ways of speeding up death, a kind of death through hallucinations and visions into other worlds (drugs). This helped The Doors get a record deal. They included it on a demo they made for Aura Records in 1965. It didn't get them signed, but they landed a deal with Electra 2 years later.

This was the first song on The Doors first album, and also their first single. It got some airplay on Los Angeles radio stations after their friends and fans kept requesting it.

The original line in the chorus was "She gets high." Elektra records censored "high," making it sound like, "she get uuggh," but the "high" line can be heard in live versions. You can also hear the song as intended in the 1999 reissue of the album, which was overseen by their original engineer Bruce Botnick. He also replaced Jim Morrison's "f--k"s on "The End."

Jim Morrison got some of the lyrics from John Rechy's 1963 book "City of Night."

The guitar melody was inspired by Paul Butterfield's "Shake Your Money Maker."

John Densmore added the knocking drum sound by hitting his drumstick sideways across the snare.

This was one of 6 songs The Doors recorded for a demo on Aura Records while they were trying to get signed in 1965. Robby Krieger was not yet with the group.

The vocals are a mix of two of Morrison's takes.

In year 2000, the surviving members of The Doors taped a VH1 Storytellers episode with guest vocalists filling in for Morrison. Scott Weiland from The Stone Temple Pilots sang on this track.

This was included on the Doors tribute album Stoned Immaculate , with Scott Weiland on vocals.

As John Densmore states in The Doors Box Set , the beat of this song was inspired by Brazilian Bossa Nova like Joao Gilberto and Tom Jobim.

In The Doors Box Set, Ray Manzarek said this was the last song they played live. It was during the Isle of the Wight Festival in the summer of 1970. The festival occurred while Morrison was on trial in Miami faced with charges of indecent exposure, and the band got a special five days of recess to be in England and get back to US. "This was to be the first gig of an European tour just as Miami was to be the first gig of a 20-city US tour. We never got beyond the first date of either one," said Ray. New York-based MisterWives came together after frontwoman Mandy Lee decided she needed a band to give her songs some additional instrumentation. "I remember my old manager told me about backing tracks, and I was like, 'Wait, what?,'" she told Billboard magazine. "For me, that was something I was never going to touch."

Lee hooked up with Etienne Bowler, Will Hehir, Marc Campbell and Dr. Blum and the quintet came up with a gender-corrected version of the Mormon term "sister wife" for the group's name.

This is a track from MisterWives' debut album Our Own House. "We hope 'Hurricane' is an anthem for those who believe in individuality and don't give a f--k about what others think," Lee told Billboard.
