Win Again Lyrics

I came out looking to party, and now I'm owning that building
You bitches can't get my spot until I start raising some children
These bitches all in they feelings, can't fuck with Nicki they know it
They know that Nicki a poet, pop me a bottle of Moet
They said I couldn't, but I did it though
Tell 'em I got that hour glass figure though
Can't stop me, don't watch me, you better just watch your nigga ho
I'm in that big boy, I am in beast mode
Beast make that g code
Bitches ain't got drive, these bitches gone get repo'd
I am a monster, this is ambition
This the type of car that you keep a bad bitch in

Not that I don't got good vision, but I don't see competition
They want me to come and help them but I am not a magician
I'm on them fo-fours I'm tipping, you better move out my way
I am not here to play, pinkprint can't be delayed

'Cause I Win Again, 'cause I win again, and I win again, and I win again,
And I win again, and I win again, and I win again, yeah I win again
Can't tell me nothing about it, your opinion isn't doubted
Go against me, then you made a mistake

Yo, yo, cause I came out, '09 when promoters brought wayne out
Lewinsky, like I couldn't get the stain out
I been bad, like cutting school, and staying out
I been hotter then vacationing, and laying out
I sat back, and watched how it was playing out
They diss me, but running and took the same route
Uh, but no, they not nicki, wrist on ice and yes my wrist bricky
If I leave, the game will miss nicki, not a website booking, money, this says 50
Pop bottles with my bitches and get pissy
This shit ain't got no more integrity
Don't write they raps, and plus they flow shitty
Don't make me expose you bitch, I'm too busy
Hoped on the bridge-y, New York City
Nicki still the queen, niggas already
(Hoped on the bridge-y, new york city
Nicki still the queen, niggas already)

I came in I told them that I would become the greatest
Muhammad ali, these bitches, and that can't be debated
I never chicken'd, I skated, I know they mad that I made it
All this money I made, all my bitches is laced

'Cause I win again, 'cause I win again, and I win again, and I win again,
And I win again, and I win again, and I win again, yeah I win again
Can't tell me nothing about it, your opinion isn't doubted
Go against me, then you made a mistake

So good, so real, so good, yeah
I'm a win again, I'm a win again

I'm Meryl Streep to all these bitches, they can't do what I do
Sometimes I just look in the mirror and I be like, "why you?"
Yeah, I know that they mad, but I'm a shit on my critics some more

I am
I am
I am still gonna do, what he sent me to do
That's kill, kill, everything in, everything in my way,
That's kill, kill, everything in, everything in my way,
That's kill, kill, everything in, everything in my way

They know I am a champion, no, champions do, it's all champions do

  • Minaj hammers here the fact here that she's a winner in the rap game:

Cause I win again, cause I win again
And I win again, and I win again, and I win again
And I win again, and I win again, yeah, I win again
Can't tell me nothing about it, your opinion is invalid
Go against me, then you made a mistake

According to Minaj, she wrote the song by freestyling in the booth as she loved Sak Pase's beat so much. The rapper, "then went home and made adjustments," before returning to the studio and laying the track down.

    Girls, Girls, Girls Lyrics

Friday night and I need a fight
My motorcycle and a switchblade knife
Handful of grease in my hair feels right
But what I need to get me tight are those

    Girls, Girls, Girls
    Long legs and burgundy lips
    Girls, girls, girls
Dancin' down on the Sunset Strip
    Girls, girls, girls
    Red lips, fingertips

Trick or treat, sweet to eat
On Halloween and New Year's Eve
Yankee girls you just can't be beat
But you're the best when you're off your feet

    Girls, girls, girls
At the dollhouse in Ft. Lauderdale
    Girls, Girls, Girls
    Rocking in Atlanta at Tattletails
    Girls, girls, girls
Raising hell at the Seventh Veil

    Have you read the news
    In the Soho Tribune
    Ya know she did me
Well then she broke my heart

I'm such a good good boy
I just need a new toy
    I tell ya what, girl
Dance for me, I'll keep you over-employed
    Just tell me a story
You know the one I mean

    Crazy Horse, Paris, France
    Forget the names, remember romance
I got the photos, a manage et trois
Musta broke those Frenchies laws with those

    Girls, girls, girls
    Body Shop and Marble Arch
    Girls, girls, girls
Tropicana's where I lost my heart

    Girls, girls, girls
(Hey Tommy, check that out man)
    (What, Vince, where?)
    (Right there, man) (hey)
Hey baby, you wanna go somewhere? (girls, girls, girls)

  • This song is a tribute to strip clubs, seven of which are mentioned by name in the song:

    The Dollhouse in Ft. Lauderdale
    Tattletails in Atlanta
The Seventh Veil in Los Angeles
    Crazy Horse in Paris
The Body Shop in Los Angeles
    The Marble Arch, Vancouver
    The Tropicana, Los Angeles
The listening party for the album was held at a strip club in Hollywood.
  • The video was shot at The Seventh Veil, which is mentioned in the song. Directed by Wayne Isham, the clip was very racy for its time, featuring strippers in action. Predictably, it did very well on MTV.
  • Some of the girls that have been married and divorced by members of Mötley Crüe include Pamela Anderson, Elaine Irwin, Heather Locklear, Brandy Brandt, Heidi Mark and Donna D'Errico.
  • The first line of this song, "Friday night and I need a fight" is almost identical to the first line in Sweet's "Sweet F.A." Crue Bassist Nikki Sixx is a big fan of the Sweet and likely took inspiration from them in these lyrics. (thanks, Neil - Conroe, TX)
  • Lead singer Vince Neil has a tattoo that says "Girls, Girls, Girls." For a while, he owned a strip club in Japan that was also called "Girls, Girls, Girls."
  • The band was going to call the album "Entertainment Or Death." Their manager at the time, Doc Mcgee, had it tattooed to his arm, but a week later they changed the title to "Girls, Girls, Girls." (thanks, Søren - Horsens, Denmark)

  • This song about moving on and finding your true calling was written by Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman and lead singer Burton Cummings.

In our interview with Bachman , he explained that musically, the song was inspired by two tracks on the Buffalo Springfield Again album: "Rock & Roll Woman" and "Hung Upside Down." Neil Young of Buffalo Springfield (a fellow Canadian) played an acetate of the album for Cummings and Bachman when his travels took him to Winnipeg. The they heard it, they loved the country-rock sound and set out to write something like it. "That was our country-rock song," Bachman said. "Me and Burton trying to be like Neil and Stephen Stills."
  • According to Randy Bachman, the guitar lick on this song is an inversion of what Stephen Stills played on the Buffalo Springfield track "Hung Upside Down." When Bachman heard the theme song to the TV show Law & Order (composed by Mike Post), it sounded familiar. "It's the same riff," Bachman told us. "It's just recycling the riff in a different context."

Note that Bachman doesn't fault Post for lifting the riff: Randy believes that just about any modern music music is based on something that came before.

    Baby Got Back Lyrics

Oh, my, God Becky, look at her butt
It is so big, she looks like
One of those rap guys' girlfriends
But, ya know, who understands those rap guys?
They only talk to her, because,
She looks like a total prostitute, 'kay?
I mean, her butt, is just so big
I can't believe it's just so round, it's like out there
    I mean gross, look
    She's just so, black

I like big butts and I can not lie
    You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung, want to pull up tough
'Cause you notice that butt was stuffed
Deep in the jeans she's wearing
    I'm hooked and I can't stop staring
Oh baby, I want to get wit'cha
    And take your picture
My homeboys tried to warn me
But with that butt you got makes (me so horny)
    Ooh, Rump-o'-smooth-skin
You say you want to get in my Benz?
    Well, use me, use me
'Cause you ain't that average groupie
    I've seen her dancin'
    To hell with romancin'
    She's sweat, wet,
Got it goin' like a turbo 'Vette
    I'm tired of magazines
Sayin' flat butts are the thing
Take the average black man and ask him that
    She gotta pack much back
    So, fellas (Yeah) Fellas (Yeah)
Has your girlfriend got the butt? (Hell yeah)
Tell 'em to shake it (Shake it) Shake it (Shake it)
    Shake that healthy butt
Baby Got Back (L.A. fits with the Oakland booty)

Baby got back (L.A. fits with the Oakland booty)

I like 'em round, and big
And when I'm throwin' a gig
I just can't help myself, I'm actin' like an animal
    Now here's my scandal
I want to get you home
    And ugh, double-up, ugh, ugh
    I ain't talkin' bout Playboy
'Cause silicone parts are made for toys
I want 'em real thick and juicy
    So find that juicy double
    Mix-a-Lot's in trouble
Beggin' for a piece of that bubble
So I'm lookin' at rock videos
    Knock-kneed bimbos walkin' like hoes
    You can have them bimbos
I'll keep my women like Flo Jo
A word to the thick soul sistas, I want to get with ya
I won't cuss or hit ya
But I gotta be straight when I say I want to fuck
    Til the break of dawn
    Baby got it goin' on
A lot of simps won't like this song
'Cause them punks like to hit it and quit it
And I'd rather stay and play
'Cause I'm long, and I'm strong
And I'm down to get the friction on
    So, ladies (yeah) Ladies (yeah)
If you want to role in my Mercedes (yeah)
Then turn around, stick it out
Even white boys got to shout
    Baby got back

    Baby got back
Yeah, baby, when it comes to females
    Cosmo ain't got nothin'
    To do with my selection
    Thirty six-twenty four- thirty six
Ha ha, only if she's 5'3

So your girlfriend rolls a Honda, playin' workout tapes by Fonda
But Fonda ain't got a motor in the back of her Honda
    My anaconda don't want none
    Unless you've got buns, hon
You can do side bends or sit-ups
But please don't lose that butt
Some brothers want to play that hard role
And tell you that the butt ain't gol'
So they toss it and leave it
And I pull up quick to retrieve it
    So Cosmo says you're fat
Well I ain't down with that
'Cause your waist is small and your curves are kickin'
    And I'm thinkin' bout stickin'
To the beanpole dames in the magazines
    You ain't it, Miss Thing
Give me a sista, I can't resist her
Red beans and rice didn't miss her
    Some knucklehead tried to dis
'Cause his girls are on my list
He had game but he chose to hit 'em
And I pull up quick to get wit 'em
So ladies, if the butt is round,
And you want a triple X throw down
    Dial 1-900-MIXALOT
    And kick them nasty thoughts
    Baby got back

    Baby got back

    Baby Got Back Song Chart
  • This song is about women with big butts, and the men who love them. Mix-a-Lot got the idea for this when he was watching the Super Bowl on TV. A Budweiser beer commercial came on with models who were way too skinny for his taste.
  • This started a trend of rap "booty" songs. Wreckx-N-Effect had a hit soon after with "Rump Shaker," and rappers have been singing the praises of "the bubble" ever since.
  • The outrageous video was briefly banned by MTV. This added to the song's popularity, as Mix-a-Lot played up the controversy. Years later, many rap videos featured dancers with big, healthy butts. The dancers in modern hip-hop videos usually have bigger rumps than those in "Baby Got Back," since in 1992, it was a lot harder to find models with a juicy bubble.
  • This song opens with two Valley Girls disparaging a black woman with a big butt. It was the first successful Valley Girl integration since the Frank Zappa song "Valley Girl."
  • This brought Sir Mix-a-Lot national fame; previously he was locally popular in Seattle. After trying to follow up with other butt-related songs, he fell into obscurity as a performer, but did have another hit as a songwriter: he wrote the Pussycat Dolls hit "Don't Cha" with Cee-Lo Green. Despite having just this one hit, he is still a big part of rap history - his old mixer is on display at the Experience Music Project in Seattle.
  • Cameron Diaz dances to this in the movie Charlie's Angels. It has also been used in the movies Happy Feet, Jackass: The Movie, Shrek and Shark Tale.
  • A young and nervous Ytossie from the reality TV show Temptation Island I was one of the bootie-shaking performers in the video for this song.
  • In 2005, this was used in back-to-school commercials for Target with the lyrics changed to "Baby Got Backpack."
  • This song has been covered by Throwdown, a Heavy Metal band, and Agent Felix, a Pop-Punk band. (thanks, Logan - Bellevue, WA)
  • Mix-a-Lot wasn't the first to use the phrase "Silicone Sisters" to refer to surgically enhanced women - Bruce Springsteen used it in his first single, "Blinded By The Light."
  • The sketch comedy show In Living Color did a parody of this by "Trail Mix-a-Lot" called "Baby Got Snacks." In this version, the front man (Jamie Foxx) raps about being into obese women. (thanks, Mike - Santa Barbara, CA)
  • A cover of the song was sung in the Glee episode 'Sadie Hawkins,' which aired on January 24, 2013 in the US. The Fox TV show's version was borrowed from an interpretation by singer-songwriter Jonathan Coulton, who was more than a little miffed not to be acknowledged. "It sounds like it actually uses the audio from my recording - not the vocals obviously, but the instruments sound EXTREMELY similar," he wrote on his blog.

Coulon added: "They got in touch with my peeps to basically say that they're within their legal rights to do this, and that I should be happy for the exposure (even though they do not credit me, and have not even publicly acknowledged that it's my version - so you know, it's kind of SECRET exposure)."
  • Speaking with TMZ in 2014, Sir Mix-A-Lot said that Jennifer Lopez was the inspiration for the song, particularly during her time on In Living Color as one of the show's Fly Girl dancers.

    Try Again Lyrics

It's been a long time (long time), we shouldn't of left you (left you),
Without a dope beat to step to (step to, step to, step to, step to).
It's been a long time (long time), we shouldn't of left you (left you),
Without a dope beat to step to (step to, step to, step to, step to).

What would you do, to get to me?
What would you say, to have your way?
Would you give it up or Try Again?
If I hesitate to let you in?
Now would you be yourself, or play a role?
Tell all the boys, or keep it low?
If I say no, would you turn away,
Or play me off or would you stay?
    Oh

If at first you don't succeed (first you don't succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again
Cause if at first you don't succeed (first you don't succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, dust yourself off and try again, try again

I'm into you, you into me? But I can't let it go, so easily.
Not 'till I see, where this could be, could be eternally, or just week.
You know our chemistry, it's off the chain.
It's perfect now, but will it change?
    This ain't a yes, this ain't a no.
Just do your thang, and we'll see how it goes.
    Ooooh

If at first you don't succeed (first you don't succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again
Cause if at first you don't succeed (first you don't succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, dust yourself off and try again, try again

See you don't wanna throw it all away.
I might be shy on the first day,
But what about the next day? (huh, huh, huh, huh)
See you don't wanna throw it all away.
I might be buggin' on the first day,
But what about the next day? (huh, huh, huh, huh)

If at first you don't succeed (first you don't succeed),
Dust yourself off, and try again
You can dust it off and try again, try again

  • This was featured in the movie Romeo Must Die. Aaliyah stared in the movie opposite Jet Li. It was her first film role, and a promising start to her acting career. Unfortunately, Aaliyah appeared in just one more movie: Queen of the Damned, which was released after her death.
  • Timbaland produced this song and wrote it with Stephen Garrett; the pair had previously collaborated on the Ginuwine song "Pony" and on Aaliyah's first hit "Are You That Somebody?," which was used on the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack. Garrett, who was in a group called Playa, died in 2008 from a rare medical condition. He was 33.
  • The "It's been a long time, we shouldn't have left you... without a dope beat to step to" line is a variation on a lyric from the 1987 Eric B. & Rakim song "I Know You Got Soul," where Rakim raps: "It's been a long time, I shouldn't have left you... without a strong rhyme to step to."
  • This was the first song to top the Hot 100 based on airplay alone, without any sales figures being included. Until December 5, 1998, a song had to be issued as a single to make the chart (which is why songs like "Stairway To Heaven" and "Don't Speak" didn't place). "Try Again" wasn't released as a commercial single until it fell from #1 - if you wanted to own it before then, you had to buy the Romeo Must Die soundtrack.
  • This won MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video and Best Video For A Film.
  • This got a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. It lost to "He Wasn't Man Enough" by Toni Braxton.
  • The video features Aaliyah's Romeo Must Die co-star, Jet Li. It was directed by Wayne Isham, whose many credits include "Piece Of Me" by Britney Spears and "All The Right Moves" by OneRepublic.
  • This was used in a 2013 episode of The Mindy Project in a scene where the character Danny does a dance routine to it as a secret Santa gift for Mindy.

    Siberian Khatru Lyrics

    Sing, bird of prey;
Beauty begins at the foot of you. Do you believe the manner?
    Gold stainless nail,
Torn through the distance of man
    As they regard the summit.

Even Siberia goes through the motions.
    Hold out and hold up;
    Hold down the window.
    Outbound, river,
Hold out the morning that comes into view.
    Bluetail, tailfly.
River running right on over my head.

    How does she sing?
Who holds the ring? And ring and you will find me coming.
    Cold reigning king,
Hold all the secrets from you
    As they produce the movement.

Even Siberia goes through the motions.
    Hold out and hold up;
    Hold down the window.
    Outbound, river,
Hold out the morning that comes into view.
    Bluetail, tailfly.
River running right over the outboard, river,
    Bluetail, tailfly,
    Luther, in time.
    dude'ndoodit, dah, d't-d't-dah.

    Hold down the window;
Hold out the morning that comes into view.
    Warm side, the tower;
Green leaves reveal the heart spoken Khatru.

    Gold stainless nail,
Torn through the distance of man as they regard the summit.
    Cold reigning king,
    Shelter the women that sing
    As they produce the movement.
    River running right on over,
    Then over my head.
    Outboard, river.

    Bluetail, tailfly,
    Luther, in time,
    Suntower, asking,
    Cover, lover,
    June cast, moon fast,
    As one changes,
    Heart gold, leaver,
    Soul mark, mover,
    Christian, changer,
    Called out, saviour,
    Moon gate, climber,
    Turn round, glider.

    Siberian Khatru Song Chart
  • The closing track on the Close To The Edge album, this song is about unity across cultures. Jon Anderson , who wrote the lyric, has given different accounts of what "Khatru" means. He has said that it means "winter," and also that it translates to "as you wish" in Yemenite Hebrew.

The meaning of the song is more clear: Anderson is expressing how Siberians go through the same emotions that he does. They're people like us, just geographically distant. We may be from different places, but we're all basically the same. (thanks, Dino - Bandung, Indonesia)
  • Jon Anderson is credited with writing the lyric to this song, with keyboard player Rick Wakeman, guitarist Steve Howe and Anderson credited for composing the music. The songwriting credits on Yes songs can be deceptive, since the full band was usually involved in some aspect of working up the song.

Howe said that this song was one of their more collaborative efforts. "That song came together with the arranging skills of the band," he told Guitar World. "Jon had the rough idea of the song, and Chris [Squire], Bill [Bruford], Rick and me would collaborate on getting the riffs together."
  • Eddy Offord, who produced the album, remembers using a primitive studio technique to get a swirling sound in the mix: he had an assistant attach a microphone to a cable and swing it around the room to get a Doppler effect.

Dirty South, can y'all really feel me
    East coast feel me

Dirty South, can y'all really feel me
    East coast feel me
    West coast feel me

Boy, I been watching you like a hawk in the sky
That flies, cause you were my prey (my prey)
Boy, I promise you if we keep bumpin' heads
I know that one of these days (days)
We goin' hook it up while we talk on the phone
But see, I don't know if that's good
I been holding back this secret from you
I probably shouldn't tell it but

If I, if I let you know
    You can't tell nobody
    I'm talking bout nobody
    Are you responsible
Boy I gotta watch my back
    'Cause I'm not just anybody
Is it my goal, is it your goal
    Sometimes I'm goody-goody
    Right now I'm naughty naughty
    Say yes or say no
    Cause I really need somebody
    Tell me your that somebody

Boy, won't you pick me up at the park right now
Up the block, while everyone sleeps (sleeps, sleeps)
I'll be waiting there with my lugs, my loads, my hat
    Just so I'm low key
If you tell the world (don't sleep, you know that we'll be weak)
Oh boy, see I'm trusting you with my heart, my soul

Are You That Somebody? Song Chart
  • The song finds Aaliyah offering a late-night tryst to a guy she's had her eye on for a while. She insists on discretion however, repeatedly asking him, "Are you responsible?"
  • Timbaland wrote this song with Stephen "Static Major" Garrett, who co-wrote most of Aaliyah's other hits along with songs for Ginuwine ("So Anxious," "Pony") and his group Playa ("Cheers 2 U," "Don't Stop The Music").

In the December 2008 issue of Vibe magazine, Garrett mentions that Aaliyah did not initially like this song and another Static wrote for her, "Try Again." She recorded them both, though, and they became big hits for her. Aaliyah didn't write songs, but prided herself on being able to interpret them.
  • Timbaland produced this song, incorporating the clean percussion sound that powered many of his productions. Often working with Missy Elliott and Melvin "Magoo" Barcliff, he became one of the hottest producers of this era, and Aaliyah was one of his biggest stars. She had previously worked with R. Kelly and Jermaine Dupri.
  • Aaliyah was 19 when this was released in 1998, but she was already a seasoned pro: her first album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, was issued in 1994.
  • A key component to this song is the baby giggling and cooing in the background. This was a unique production element that played to Aaliyah's nickname: "baby girl," which is how Timbaland addresses her in his rap.

Many rumors floated around as to the identity of the baby (a popular one was that it came from a home video of Aaliyah when she was little), but the "happy baby" came from a CD from a sound effects library.

The same sound was used in Prince's song "Delirious," which in turn was sampled from the 1968 song "Countdown to 6," by Perrey and Kingsley.
  • This was featured in the movie Dr. Dolittle, starring Eddie Murphy. The soundtrack featured several other Timbaland productions, including "Same Ol' G" by Ginuwine and an All Saints cover of "Lady Marmalade."

He and Stephen Garrett put the song together on very short notice when they got the call to produce a track for the film. Timbaland remembers the gig paying $400,000.
  • Timbaland did the rap at the end of the song, which has nothing to do with the storyline of the song but serves as effective promotion for him and Aaliyah - by mentioning their names, it ensured that listeners would know the artist and producer when they heard it on the radio. When Timbaland introduces himself as "The man from the big VA," he's referring to his home state of Virginia.
  • This was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal in 1999.
  • The video gets very literal with the "watching you like a hawk" line, showing Aaliyah handling the bird. Other than that, most of the clip (directed by Mark Gerard) is comprised of group dance scenes starring Aaliyah's abs.

  • Written by frontman Tomas Kalnoky, this is the ninth track from the ska punk band's debut album.
  • The lines "Don't forget I connect and I read every word you said" and "If you hate me so much, then stop singing my songs" were a response to Catch 22's song "Hard to Impress," which called out Kalnoky, who was once their frontman but later left the band to focus on his education. I'm lying alone with my head on the phone
Thinking of you till it hurts
I know you hurt too but what else can we do
    Tormented and torn apart
I wish I could carry your smile and my heart
For times when my life seems so low
It would make me believe what tomorrow could bring
When today doesn't really know, doesn't really know

I'm all out of love, I'm so lost without you
I know you were right believing for so long
I'm all out of love, what am I without you
I can't be too late to say that I was so wrong

I want you to come back and carry me home
Away from this long lonely nights
I'm reaching for you, are you feeling it too
Does the feeling seem oh so right
And what would you say if I called on you now
And said that I can't hold on
There's no easy way, it gets harder each day
Please love me or I'll be gone, I'll be gone

I'm all out of love, I'm so lost without you
I know you were right believing for so long
I'm all out of love, what am I without you
I can't be too late to say that I was so wrong

Oh, what are you thinking of
    What are you thinking of

All Out Of Love Song Chart
  • Air Supply had eleven Top 40 US hits, five of which have the word "Love" in the title. This song deals with the unrequited love of a singer who feels lost without the object of his affection.
  • Air Supply formed in 1975 when Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met as cast members on the stage musical Jesus Christ Superstar. In 1978 they toured their home country of Australia with Rod Stewart. They were then invited to tour North America with Stewart, enabling them to break into the American market. The following year, Clive Davis signed them to Arista Records and released "Lost in Love" internationally. "All Out Of Love" was their next single on Arista.
  • In their native Australia, Air Supply released this song in 1978, but for the 1980 international release with Arista Records, Clive Davis ordered some changes to the song. Graham Russell told us: "Originally it was, 'I'm all out of love, I want to arrest you.' By that I mean, 'I want to get your attention.' In Australia nobody questioned it, and it was a #1 song in Australia in '78. Clive heard it, he says, 'Oh, no, that's too weird.' It had already been a hit. He said, 'In America they won't understand that.' So he said, 'What about 'I'm all out of love, I'm so lost without you'?' And I thought, Yeah, that sounds great. I mean, at first I thought, Oh, I don't know if I want to change it. But Clive said, 'It's a great song and it could be a massive hit, but you just need to change a couple of lines.' It was that line, and there was another line: 'I know you were right.' 'I'm all out of love, I'm so lost without you, I know you were right.' But funnily enough, we'll never know if it would have worked the other way. And I doubt it, to be honest. Because Clive is usually right."

So do Australians really walk around going "I want to arrest you"? We asked Graham if this was a common saying down under. He replied: "It really isn't. I think it was just me using a weird word. But, you know, now I think of it, it's definitely very weird. There are certain words that you just don't use when you're writing songs. And 'arrest' is one of them. Words like 'cabbage' or 'cauliflower,' like that. There are certain words that just aren't poetic. And 'arrest' is one of them. And I really don't know why I used it. But Clive called me on it, and the rest became history." (Check out our interview with Graham Russell .)
  • This was used in the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder, and also in the rather dark film Happiness, where a couple dances to it in a bar.
  • This was Air Supply's only chart entry in the UK. They fared much better in the US. (thanks, Emery - London, England)

  • An early AC/DC track, this one plays off their band name, keeping with the electricity theme as Bon Scott sings about their "high voltage rock and roll." The band would produce many more songs about rock and roll over the next four decades, and these tracks were often the showstoppers at their concerts.
  • AC/DC's first album, released in 1975 only in Australia, was called High Voltage, but this song wasn't part of it. "High Voltage" the song was released as a standalone single, reaching #6 in Australia and goosing sales of the album.

Another Australia-only album (T.N.T.) followed later that year, and in 1976 tracks from these first two albums were compiled, along with this song, for another album called High Voltage that was given international release and set the stage for the band's rise to stardom. The "High Voltage" single was also released internationally in 1976, and a video was made to promote the song.
  • This was the first AC/DC song that drummer Phil Rudd played on.

    Well we got no class
    And we got no principals
    And we got no intelligence
We can't even think of a word that rhymes

    Well we can't salute ya

    No more pencils
    No more books
    No more teacher's
    Dirty looks
    Out for summer
    Out till fall
    We might not come
    Back at all

    School's Out Song Chart
  • The title (and song) were inspired by a warning often said in Bowery Boys movies in which one of the characters declares to another, "School is out," meaning "to wise up." The Bowery Boys were characters featured in 48 movies that ran from 1946-1958. They were young tough guys in New York City who were always finding trouble. The movies ran on American TV throughout the '60s and '70s, eating up a lot of air time on independent stations. It was one of these TV viewing that Cooper saw. In the film, the character Sach (Huntz Hall) did something dumb, which prompted one of the other guys to say, "Hey, Sach, School's Out!" Cooper like the way the phrase sounded, and used it as the basis for this song.
  • This is a fixture at Cooper's concerts. He says the difference between him and guys like Marilyn Manson is that he leaves the crowd in a good mood. His shows are meant to be fun, not depressing.
  • This was released in the summer of 1972, when school really was out. It's since become an anthem for summer vacation.
  • Cooper wrote this song with his guitarist Michael Bruce. At the time, "Alice Cooper" was the name of the band, not just the lead singer, and all members contributed to their songwriting. Bruce also wrote the group's songs "Caught In A Dream" and "Be My Lover," and co-wrote "No More Mr. Nice Guy" with Cooper.
  • This was Cooper's biggest hit; it was especially popular in the UK where it topped the chart for three weeks. A concert staple, it is usually the last song he plays at his shows.
  • The chorus of children who sing on this was put together by producer Bob Ezrin. In 1979, Ezrin used another kid's chorus when he produced "Another Brick In The Wall (part II)" for Pink Floyd. He liked the idea of hearing children's voices on songs about school. In this song, they sing the children's rhyme "No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers' dirty looks."
  • In a 2008 Esquire interview, Cooper said: "When we did 'School's Out,' I knew we had just done the national anthem. I've become the Francis Scott Key of the last day of school."
  • The album opened like a school desk and contained a pair of paper panties. This is the kind of "added value" you just don't get with CDs.
  • Soul Asylum covered this for the 1998 movie The Faculty.
  • Cooper recorded a new version of this with Swedish pop group The A-Teens in 2002. It was an odd pairing, but the A-Teens claimed Cooper did not scare them. Cooper said that was because they had never seen his stage show. The lyrics of the new version were altered from "School's been blown to pieces" to "I'm bored to pieces."
  • Cooper starred in a TV commercial for Staples where a young girl is forced to shop for school supplies while a Muzak version of this song plays. She looks at Cooper and says, "I thought you said School's out forever." He replies, "No, the song goes, 'School's out for summer. Nice try, though." At this point, the real version of the song kicks in. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • On May 13, 2009, Cooper performed this song at the Arizona State University graduation ceremonies with his son Dash's band, Runaway Phoenix. Alice wore his varsity letter sweater from Cortez High (Class of '66) for the performance, which preceded a speech by US President Barack Obama. Cooper's son Dash was attending the ASU journalism school.
  • This was slated for the 1992 film Wayne's World, where Cooper was to perform it before meeting Wayne and Garth backstage. Shortly before filming began, Cooper's manager Shep Gordon changed the playbook and told the film's producers that Alice would be performing a new song instead: "Feed My Frankenstein."
