If You Love Somebody Set Them Free Song Chart

Written by Sting, this was the first single released from his solo debut album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles.

Sting wrote this in response to "Every Breath You Take," his monumental hit with The Police. He explained in Lyrics By Sting: "This song was as much a hymn to my newfound freedom as it was an antidote to the brooding issues of control and surveillance that haunted "Every Breath You Take." Perhaps the highest compliment you can pay to a partner is 'I don't own you - you're free.' If you were to try to possess them in the obvious way, you could never appreciate them in the way that really counts. There are too many prisons in the world already."

Sting assembled a group of jazz musicians, including bass player Darryl Jones (who went on to join The Rolling Stones in 1993), sax player Branford Marsalis, keyboardist Kenny Kirkland and drummer Omar Hakim, and headed to Barbados to record this album at Eddy Grant's studio.

The album's title was inspired by an odd dream Sting had when he first arrived in Barbados. He remembered in Lyrics By Sting: "I dreamed I was sitting in the walled garden behind my house in Hampstead, under a lilac tree on a well-manicured lawn, surrounded by beautiful rosebushes. Suddenly the bricks from the wall exploded into the garden and I turned to see the head of an enormous turtle emerging from the darkness, followed by four or five others. They were not only the size of a man, they were also blue and had an air of being immensely cool, like hepcats, insouciant and fearless. They didn't harm me but with an almost casual violence commenced to destroy my genteel English garden, digging up the lawn with their claws, chomping at the rosebushes, bulldozing the lilac tree. Total mayhem: I woke up to the sound of Branford in the room upstairs, riffing wildly on the tenor sax, followed by his unmistakable laughter."

The music video, directed by Godley and Creme, was shot on a soundstage in Paris.

This song reflected Sting's fear of commitment. He told Musician in 1985: "In relationships I feel very susceptible to entrapment. I see the bars go up and I try and escape, usually in the most violent and vicious way. I've destroyed one person totally; I've left people in a bloody pulp as I've felt the bars go up. If anything, 'Set Them Free' is a kind of warning. I'm not really into the idea of permanent relationships. I find that phoney, shallow and unrealistic in many ways. That's not to say the relationships I have are in any way inferior. I think they're more intense because of that belief."

Sting told Rolling Stone in 1985: "I've been through periods of wanting to be possessed, by my parents, my girlfriends. I don't want to be owned anymore."

This is one of several Sting songs to feature the word "love" in the title. Others include "Love is the Seventh Wave," "Sacred Love," and "Send Your Love."

In Daniel Rachel's book The Art of Noise: Conversations with Great Songwriters, Sting spoke about the power of the word: "It's an easy word to say, love. It's shorthand for something that's very complex. There's a huge spectrum of meaning within the word love. What is love, from lust to devotion to worship? It's not something I'm very conscious of. I wasn't aware that I used the word love a lot."

U2 wrote this for the soundtrack of the Wim Wenders movie of the same name. In the movie, angels come to earth and assume human form.

In 2000, Bono teamed up with Wenders to write the movie The Million Dollar Hotel. Wenders directed the film, which stars Mel Gibson and Milla Jovovich.

Bono's duet with Frank Sinatra, "I've got you under my skin," is the B-side of the single.

On the 2001 Elevation tour, while The Edge played the acoustic intro, Bono would say "This is from the period where we got art-y, we went to Berlin, and started out on two extraordinary albums by our point of view (Achtung Baby and Zooropa). Then we thought we were genius. Pop we just floated out there.. this song was kind of a diary of the float.. you find some extraordinary things while you are out there." The Soul Cages Song Chart

This was the third single from the Soul Cages album. Although it didn't chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, it did peak at #7 on the Mainstream Rock chart and #9 on the Modern Rock chart.

The roots of this song are buried in British folklore. Sting explained in Lyrics By Sting: "There is an old British folktale about the souls of the dead being kept under the sea in the lobster cages of a creature who is half man, half fish. Anyone who dares try to free the souls of the dead must go under the sea himself and drink with the creature. If he drinks him under the table, the souls will go free. If, on the other hand, the creature prevails, the challenger will be imprisoned forever in the cages at the bottom of the sea. You need a strong stomach to treat with this creature."

This won the first Grammy Award in the inaugural Best Rock Song category in 1992, beating Metallica's "Enter Sandman," Jane's Addiction's "Been Caught Stealing," Bryan Adams' "Can't Stop This Thing We Started," Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Learning To Fly," and Queensryche's "Silent Lucidity."

Numb Song Chart

The Edge sang the lead vocal. This is only the third time he did this, the other instances being "Seconds" from War and "Van Diemen's Land" from Rattle & Hum.

The backing drumbeat was taken from the Nazi propaganda film Triumph Of The Will, which shows an 11 year-old boy playing drums at the 1936 Olympics.

This started as an outtake from the Achtung Baby sessions called "Down All The Days."

The Edge wrote the entire song, even the lyrics. He had recently gone through a divorce.

The video showed members of the band methodically tying ropes around The Edge.

My Funny Friend and Me Song Chart

Sting wrote this with pianist Dave Hartley for what would eventually become Disney's animated film The Emperor's New Groove, a project that began as Kingdom of the Sun. The production was plagued with issues that extended to the music when the studio found demographic research that suggested modern children tuned out during sequences with characters singing. They told Sting, who had written eight songs for the film, that they were eliminating song numbers for characters in favor of background music. In fact, they were scrapping the whole original story, so most of the songs wouldn't even make sense if they did use them.

"I was disappointed to say the least, pointing out that my favorite Disney movie, The Jungle Book, would never have been completed if such research was correct," he wrote in Lyrics By Sting.

Luckily, the rejected songs were still included on the film's soundtrack. The nightmarish production was also captured on the documentary The Sweatbox, produced and directed by Sting's wife, Trudie Styler.

This peaked at #24 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Singles chart.

This was nominated for Best Original Song at the 2001 Academy Awards ceremony. It lost to Bob Dylan's "Things Have Changed" from the comedy Wonder Boys.

No Money No Love Song Chart

This is one of three tracks on Listen that Dutch sibling electronic music duo Showtek show up on. After laying down "Bad" with Guetta in 2013, the Janssen brothers spent a fortnight working on new songs with him in the studio in January 2014. It then took the trio another half a year to complete "No Money, No Love" and "Sun Goes Down" due to their touring schedules.

Showtek explained the collaboration to Billboard magazine: "David enters the studio with a song as an idea of how the song should be about. For him, it starts with a lyric, and for us it's about having a catchy melody. When you put that together, you have great ingredients that can work together."

"We made 25 versions of "No Money No Love," because he's really detail-oriented and everything must be perfect," they added. "It took at least six months, because you don't see each other every day to make it really fit and have new vocal sessions and trips to see each other."

The song features vocal contributions from the Swedish singer and rapper Elliphant and the UK Garage legend Ms. Dynamite. The later also supplied vocals on Katy B's second single, "Lights On" and the DJ Fresh Versus Jay Fray hit track "Dibby Dibby Sound."

From Into The Heart by Niall Stokes: "It's a song about a man living on little or no romance," Bono says. "It's a song about women - or a woman - but it's addressed to him." Bono talks a bit about theology and about El Shadi - the third and least used name for God in the Bible, which translates as "the breasted one." "I've always believed that the spirit is a feminine thing," he says. "Mysterious Ways" is not about a particular woman. It is about women in general, and the way they entrance, and often dominate men. Says Bono, "At times I do tend to idealize women. It's easy to fall into the trap of separating them into angels and devils for the sake of the drama. But there's no way that there's ever anything anti-women involved. Our songs are not politically correct. They are written from a man's point of view. He's wrestling with different things, there's a flash of anger and hurt here and there. While recording this in Berlin, U2 came up with the basis for their song "One." In a rush of creativity, they put together "One" and finished "Mysterious Ways" later. This was very refreshing for the band - they were having a hard time coming up with anything and even considered breaking up.

The line: "If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel - on your knees boy!" is probably a reference to oral sex, although it can have a more innocent religious meaning.

Bono performed this on the Zoo TV tour in character as The Fly, a parody of an egomaniacal rock star, wearing huge sunglasses and leather.

U2 performed this on the Zoo TV tour with a bellydancer on stage for visual aids. The Edge took up with Morleigh Steinberg, who was the dancer for part of the tour. He went on to marry her. (thanks, Viv - Windhoek, Africa)

This is one of three Listen tracks that features the Dutch sibling electronic music duo Showtek; these Janssen brothers also show up on "Bad" and "No Money No Love." Frequent Showtek collaborator Sonny Wilson and Canadian reggae-pop band Magic! also contributed to the track.

Showtek told Billboard magazine about their collaborations with Guetta. "Our whole career started as producers, we never dreamed of becoming performing Djs," they said. "When we started making music, it was a hobby that started when we were 15 or 16. Working with David was a great chance to try producing pop, reggae and the dance music from nowadays. The songs definitely have a good Showtek touch but also more crossover pop and reggae styles from David."

"It's fun to try and do different stuff and experiment and see where you can go with it," Showtek added. "It's good to be diverse and try different stuff. David is very good to work with. He has the ability to put things together I'd never think of, he's been doing it already for like 15 years. He's very good at knowing what to put together with what and have a vision for how it should be produced. Putting a different style vocal with a different sound and find the right people to work with."

Bono sang this as Judas in a biblical setting. It contains sexual imagery between Judas and Jesus that is open for interpretation.

U2 also released this on the Until The End Of The World soundtrack in 1991. Bono and film director Wim Wenders collaborated together on the soundtrack. They asked contemporary artists to imagine what they would sound like in 2001, the time that the film is set.

There is another version of this song on the Shalom 3 disc bootleg called "I Feel Free." (thanks, James - Knoxville, TN, for above 2)

This was used in the trailer for the 2000 movie Proof Of Life.

U2 played this when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Bono introduced the song by saying it was, "A little Pop diddy - a conversation between Jesus and Judas."

This was the first new song to be released by Faith Mo More, since the band originally disbanded in 1998. Keyboardist Roddy Bottum said, "It feels apt that the first track we're releasing is 'Motherf--ker,' a song about accountability. Basically we've created, recorded and mixed a new body of work by ourselves and we're releasing it on our own label. It's a huge deal for us to only have ourselves to answer to at this point in our career and the song is about that, where the buck stops via the basic imagery of foie gras production, bondage... y'know, stuff like that."

The song was first played on a concert in July 2014's British Summer Time Hyde Park concert, along with another new Faith No More tune titled called "Superhero."

A seven-inch single containing the song was released on Record Store Day's Black Friday, November 28, 2014 with a limited print of 5,000 copies.
