Mr. Crowley Lyrics

Mr. Crowley, what went on in your head
Mr. Crowley, did you talk with the dead
Your lifestyle to me seemed so tragic
With the thrill of it all
You fooled all the people with magic
You waited on Satan's call

Mr. Charming, did you think you were pure
Mr. Alarming, in nocturnal rapport
Uncovering things that were sacred manifest on this earth
Conceived in the eye of a secret
And they scattered the afterbirth

Mr. Crowley, won't you ride my white horse
Mr. Crowley, it's symbolic of course
Approaching a time that is classic
I hear maidens call
Approaching a time that is drastic
Standing with their backs to the wall

Was it polemically sent
I want to know what you meant
I want to know
I want to know what you meant

Mr. Crowley Song Chart
  • This song is about Aleister Crowley, a British practitioner of black magic in the early 1900s. Known as "The Wickedest Man Alive," Jimmy Page based some of the Led Zeppelin album covers on his work.

The song helped Ozzy play up his mock-Satanic image, which he often did for effect. This his something he did in his band Black Sabbath, who likened their music to horror movies.
  • Ozzy mispronounces Crowley's last name. It is in fact pronounced with the first syllable sounding like "crow" in English. (thanks, Daz - Lufkin, TX)
  • Bob Daisley, who was the bass player on the album, wrote some of the lyric for this song. In our interview with Daisley , he explained: "I wanted to look at the darkness and question Aleister Crowley. 'Aleister, what were you thinking?' You know. All this darkness and negativity. So that was a snag that I put on it."
  • When Crowley was born they scattered the afterbirth because he had a birthmark shaped like a swastika. Ozzy sings about it in the line "They scattered the afterbirth."
  • In the liner notes for The Ozzman Cometh, Ozzy wrote, "I'd read several books about Aleister Crowley. He was a very weird guy and I always wanted to write a song about him. While we were recording the Blizzard of Ozz album there was a pack of tarot cards he had designed lying around the studio. Well one thing lead to another and the song 'Mr. Crowley' was born." (thanks, Matthew Daubert - Mequon, WI)
  • A live version of this song was released as the second single from the album, following "Crazy Train." This version was taken from a performance on October 2, 1980 when Ozzy and his band played the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton on their first UK tour. In the UK, the single was backed with the song "You Said It All," (taken from the same performance) which was not available on the album. In America, the single was released as an EP which also included a performance of "Suicide Solution" from that show.
  • Randy Rhoads played guitar on this track and co-wrote it with Ozzy and Bob Daisley. "Mr. Crowley" is a great example of both his striking guitar technique and creative riff-making, skills that helped Ozzy escape the long shadow of Black Sabbath and establish a solo career. Rhoads worked on two albums with Ozzy before his untimely death in 1982 at age 25. Rhoads died during a tour stop when he went up in a small plane and the pilot started buzzing the tour bus, trying to get a rise out of Osbourne, who was in it. The plane lost control and crashed, killing Rhoads, the pilot, and the tour hairdresser.
  • The line, "Won't you ride my white horse" is a drug reference. Crowley was a known user of opium.
  • Aleister Crowley would sometimes sign books and autographs, "Polemically Yours, Aleister Crowley," which inspired Bob Daisley to wrote the line "was it polemically sent?," which appears near the end of the song. "Polemically" means generating controversy.
  • Like the "Crazy Train" single, this one was credited to "Ozzy Osbourne Blizzard of Ozz" on the cover. Blizzard of Ozz was supposed to be the name of the band, but Jet Records turned it into an Ozzy Osbourne solo album when they released the album, which featured just Ozzy on the cover and his name in big letters.
  • Ion Vein covered this for the 1999 compilation Land of the Wizard: A Tribute to Ozzy Osbourne.
  • At least two Ozzy Osbourne tribute bands (one German, one American) have used the name Mr. Crowley. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for above 3)
  • This was included on Ozzy's 1987 album Tribute, which contained live tracks featuring Randy Rhoads.
  • Aleister Crowley was also the topic of the Bruce Dickinson (formerly and presently of Iron Maiden) song "Man of Sorrows" on the album Accident of Birth. The title of the song was a quote of Isaiah 53, supposedly a description of Jesus, whom Crowley hated; Dickinson is somewhat anti-Christian, and was not above assigning a title of Christ to the self-appointed antichrist.

  • This was the first song Miller let a rap group sample. He let Run-D.M.C. use it in 2001 with Everlast also on vocals. Miller agreed only after hearing the song and liking what they did with it.
  • In 2006, the band released a 30th Anniversary Edition of the Fly Like An Eagle album. Included as a bonus track was "Take The Joker And Run," which is an acoustic version of "Take the Money and Run" sung over an early version of "The Joker." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Take The Money And Run is also the name of an unrelated 1969 Woody Allen film. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • The song was done in a country style (with fiddles!) by the Canadian singer Julian Austin in 2000. It appears on his Back in Your Life album. Austin was born in St. John, New Brunswick. (thanks, Peter - Hamilton, Canada)
  • A soundalike version was used in a 2014 commercial for Taco Bell promoting their Crunchwrap Sliders.

    Sunny Disposition Lyrics

    She had a Sunny Disposition
He had a cloud that never went away
She woke up singing almost every day
    It turned him all around
And brought him in from the pouring rain

She had a sunny way of talking
And when she finished she'd always smile
It wasn't flashy but she had style
    She touched him so profound
That he was never to be the same

    First she had him walking
    Then he'd be talking
    Walking and talking
And soon he'd be laughing out loud

    Never would believe it
    If you couldn't see it
She came to be someone that he could not be without

    They made a sunny combination
You wouldn't think so but it was true
They heard a voice coming from the blue
    True love was calling out
And it was calling them both by name

    Started with a whisper
    Pretty soon he kissed her
    That's when that whisper
    Turn into a mighty roar

    More than just affection
    Made a real connection
That's when he knew she was what he was missing before

    She gave him plenty inspiration
And every song he wrote from then til now
Had something about it explaining how
    She turned his life around

    Before her sunny disposition
He didn't know where he was going
She had a funny way of knowing
    And knowing felt so right
    When she became his wife
    She brought her disposition

    The Jack Lyrics

    She gave me the queen
    She gave me the king
    She was wheelin' and dealin'
    Just doin' her thing
    She was holdin' a pair
    But I had to try
    Her deuce was wild
    But my ace was high
But how was I to know
That she'd been dealt with before
Said she'd never had a full house
    But I should have known
From the tattoo on her left leg
And the garter on her right
She'd have the card to bring me down
    If she played it right

She's got The Jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack
    She's got the jack

    Poker face was her name
    Poker face was her nature
    Poker straight was a game
If she knew she could get you
    She played 'em fast
    And she played 'em hard
    She could close her eyes
    And feel every card
But how was I to know
    That she'd been shuffled before
Said she'd never had a royal flush
    But I should have known
That all the cards were comin'
From the bottom of the pack
And if I'd known what she was dealin' out
    I'd have dealt it back

She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, and who knows what else?
She's got the jack, yeah, yeah
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, she's got the jack
She's got the jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack
    She's got the jack

She's got the jack, she's got the jack,
Oh, it was a bad deal, (jack)
She gave me the (jack), hey
She's got the (jack), she's got the (jack)
She's got the (jack), ooh can't you tell
She's got the (jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack, jack)

    The Jack Song Chart
  • This song is about a venereal disease - "The Jack" is Australian slang for Gonorrhea, which is also known as "The Clap." AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott explained the origin of the song in a 1976 interview with Sounds. Said Scott: "We were living with this houseful of ladies who were all very friendly and everyone in the band had got the jack. So we wrote this song and the first time we did it on stage they were all in the front row with no idea what was goin' to happen. When it came to repeatin' 'She's got the jack' I pointed at them one after another." Added guitarist Angus Young: "After that, wherever we did the song the girls in the audience would run to the back of the hall."
  • Bon Scott was known for his outrageous behavior both on and off stage. He told this story in the same Sounds interview: "One time I had the jack and this girl wanted f--kin' and she was so ugly I figured, s--t! Nobody else would have her so she wouldn't spread it. But when we'd finished she went next door to Phil (Rudd, their drummer) and gave it to him. And a few weeks later she sent him a doctor's bill for 35 dollars for the cure. Well, next time she came to a show I got her up on stage in the middle of 'The Jack' and explained how she'd got it wrong and it was me owed her the money." On mike that was.
  • AC/DC takes the music in their songs much more seriously than their lyrics. They would often finish songs by writing lyrics that amuse them, and this is a good example of that technique.
  • This was released in Australia in 1975 on AC/DC's second album, T.N.T. Their first two Australian releases were combined to form High Voltage in 1976, which was their first album released worldwide.
  • In concert, Bon Scott would sometimes share with the crowd a more direct set of lyrics than the one on the recording. He also did a bit where he would introduce the song by singing (to the tune of "Maria" from West Side Story):

Gonorrhea, I've just had my first dose of gonorrhea

Such poetry can be heard on AC/DC's 1978 live album If You Want Blood, You've Got It.
  • AC/DC played this before a crowd of 500,000 at show in Toronto in 2003. The concert, which also featured The Rolling Stones, Rush, and others, was a benefit for the city, which suffered a drop in tourism due to the spread of a rare disease called SARS (Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome). AC/DC had no problem singing about one disease at a benefit for another, and the fans didn't mind either.

    Let's Celebrate

    I just wanna celebrate
    I just wanna celebrate
    Tonight we're making history
    I just wanna celebrate

We've been around the world, same song
Work hard, play hard, all day long
All the continents get jealous over me
You can see me 3D overseas
If you know me then you know where to find me
Off in the Bahamas with a bad one behind me
Now live it up, live it up, live it up
Baby pick it up, pick it up, pick it up
    And we gon'
    Boom boom around the world
    Boom boom no kidding girl
Boom boom that's the way we like to play
    We gon'
    Boom boom around the world
    Boom boom no kidding girl
Boom boom that's the way we like to play

    I just wanna celebrate
    I just wanna celebrate
    Tonight we're making history
    I just wanna celebrate

    Turn it up
    Turn it up

I've been patiently waiting for you to shake and shake it
    Make it or take it
The point is we made it
Courted by the game, call us Tom Brady
And it's not our fault that we have all the ladies
But it's hard to see these ladies when your middle name's Equator
All around the globe, matter fact see your later
They're great, we're great at world war, dominators
And we're also some smooth operators, and we gon'

    Boom boom around the world
    Boom boom no kidding girl
    Boom boom
That's the way we like to play
    We gon'
    Boom boom around the world
    Boom boom no kidding girl
Boom boom that's the way we like to play

    I just wanna celebrate
    I just wanna celebrate
    Tonight we're making history
    I just wanna celebrate

Live it up (Live it up), don't let life live you (Live you)
It's a good time (Good time), so we give you (Give you)
Now live it up, live it up, live it up, live it up, live it up
    What you wanna do?

    Big Balls Lyrics

I'm upper, upper class high society
    God's gift to ballroom notoriety
And I always fill my ballroom
    The event is never small
All the social papers say I've got the biggest balls of all

    [Chorus]
    I've got Big Balls
    I've got big balls
    And they're such big balls
    Dirty big balls
    And he's got big balls,
    And she's got big balls,
But we've got the biggest balls of them all!

And my balls are always bouncing
    My ballroom always full
And everybody comes and comes again
If your name is on the guest list
No one can take you higher
Everybody says I've got great balls of fire!

    [Chorus]

Some balls are held for charity
    And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure,
They're the balls that I like best.
And my balls are always bouncing,
To the left and to the right.
It's my belief that my big balls should be held every night.

    [Chorus]

And I'm just itching to tell you about them
Oh, we have such wonderful fun
    Seafood cocktail
    Crabs
    Crayfish

  • The title is a sexual play on words. The lyrics describe a cocktail ball, but there is obviously a double meaning.
  • AC/DC takes the music much more seriously than the lyrics to most of their songs. They often rattle off humorous lyrics so as not to be taken too seriously. Chuck Berry is a major influence on their lyrical style. He wrote many songs with highly suggestive lyrics, but presented them in a comical way so they did not seem offensive (see "My Ding-a-Ling").
  • Radio stations sometimes play the song together with "Rocker" because it's right after this on the album and the song starts up right away. Radio DJs just let the next song play since both the songs are short. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ)
  • An AC/DC tribute band from Norway and another from Texas are called Big Balls. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)

Let's stare, upon my head is three onyx
    Not again, not another excuse

Biting off more than your mouth can chew
Don't forget to compilate your fake quest
I don't want to be a man today
For all that you know, I'm the devil and the bullet
I am the trigger that will make you all obey

I'm gonna make you cry tonight
I'm gonna make you hate me

    Inside all my thoughts again
    I can't let go
In spite of you, I'm lost again
    I still don't know
    Disguise has shown me
What if I am followed - lonely
The status quo was not a punishment
But now it feels like home

You're as filthy as you thought you're guilty
Started with the end of the day
Black and white is such a fascist feeling
Right or wrong, and nothing to say
The last good five prints, straight enough to fingerprint
    But appreciated medical fiends
    Confiscate another classic inbred
Fuck it all - light the acetylene

No one is you as I can't explain
    Life keeps taking things away

    Inside all my thoughts again
    I can't let go
In spite of you, I'm lost again
    I still don't know
    Disguise has shown me
What if I am never lonely
The status quo was not a punishment
But now it feels like home

"The tough guys who came to kill, but stayed to rape and ravage."

The tortured serum, that's my friend
When the evidence came, I committed the flood
Can you stand on your faith with your feet on the bible?
Who could ask for a better disciple
What's the point, I'm not sure I can
I'll never dig another grave, I'm afraid of what I'll find
If it hurts then you're too woe
I'll take your shit and gut your fucking goat

I'm gonna make you cry tonight
I need you to hate me

    Inside all my thoughts again
    I can't let go
In spite of you, I'm lost again
    I still don't know

  • This song is about the anger that kicked in as frontman Corey Taylor struggled to come to terms with the death of Slipknot founder member and bassist Paul Gray. He told Kerrang!: "It's almost like 'Goodbye' is slowly getting to your feet, 'Nomadic' is the splint that happens once you do get to your feet. And there's almost a misogynist kind of vibe to it, where it's like men shouldn't cry, or are afraid to show their true feelings, and this is the gnarly, aggressive repercussions of trying to hold it in, and standing out and try and put on a sense of bravado when inside you really just sinking fast in the quicksand."

    T.N.T. Song Chart
  • This was originally released in 1975 in AC/DC's home country Australia on their second album, which was also called T.N.T. Their first two Australian releases were combined to form High Voltage, which was released worldwide. The album fared well in Europe, but met stiff resistance in America: Rolling Stone called it an "all time low" for hard rock in their scathing review.
  • This was one of AC/DC's first singles with Bon Scott on lead vocals. Originally a roadie, he took over lead vocals when their first singer, Dave Evans, didn't show up for a gig.
  • AC/DC found a good way to capture the energy of their live shows for the High Voltage album: they went into the studio and recorded right after gigs. The result was a very raw, but energetic sound, smoothed out with production by Harry Vanda and George Young (brother of Angus and Malcolm), who were members of the group The Easybeats, best known for their hit "Friday On My Mind."
  • T.N.T. stands for Trinitrotoluene, an explosive compound. It was popularized in Road Runner cartoons when the Coyote would buy explosive items (from Acme) labeled "T.N.T." in an attempt to blow up the Road Runner. To this date, the coyote has not been able to harm the Road Runner in any way, and has done much more damage to himself through careless use of Acme products.

    Gets crushed by governed people
    With jealousy and ignorance
    And all that coven equals
    This one, it isn't special
    Collections made of clay
    I'm waiting for the punishment
I know it’s on my way

(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)

    Irreverence is my disease
It's secondhand, but you know me
The son of a bitch is on his knees
The last man standing gets no pity

    Somewhere on a toilet wall
I read the words you form along
To form a life, they're for my life
And I find myself a truth
Something so profound and now it's sitting there
Surrounded by the damage of the state
    Another victim of the refuse
Now I've been saying this for years
    But you don't comprehend it
I fight hell and I fight fear
    Because I understand it
    Androgyny and insults
Your choice, don't wanna be difficult
You want to win the war?
    Know what you're fighting for

(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)

    Irreverence is my disease
It's secondhand, but you know me
The son of a bitch is on his knees
The last man standing gets no pity
With the angel eyes and demon seeds
You're missing what you really need
When all is said and done, you'll see
The last man standing gets no pity
    (No pity)
    (No pity)
    (No pity)
    (No pity)
    (No pity)

(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)

    Custer Song Chart
  • George Armstrong Custer was a Civil War hero and subsequently a ruthless Indian fighter. He is famous for the Battle of the Little Bighorn, commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand, in which a force of 650 men led by Custer, suffered a severe defeat to around 2,500 Indian warriors.

The death of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray and the controversial departure of drummer Joey Jordison meant many doubed whether the band could reach the same heights. This song finds Corey Taylor digging in his heels against all the scoffers. He told Kerrang!: "This is focusing that anger towards the outside world – the people who on one hand want to make us martyrs, but at the same time want to make us bastards."

"And metaphorically," he added, "it's about charging into our last stand, and it's basically saying, 'You know what? Just when you think you've written our history, we're going to rewrite it again, and basically show you that we can take all the abuse that you put out there, and we're not going to lose a step, we're not going to lose an inch, we're not going to lose any ground – we're going to keep coming.'"
  • Here are some more fun facts about George Armstrong Custer from The Encyclopedia of Trivia :

Custer was ranked 34th out of 34 in his West Point United States military Academy graduating class.

In 1864 he was given command of General Phillip Sheridan's Third Cavalry Division as a Major General. The 23-year-old George Custer was the youngest US army officer ever to become a general. When the American Civil War ended he returned to his regular rank of captain.

A redhead with a big moustache. Custer was nicknamed by the Sioux "Yellow Hair the Woman Killer" and "Long Hair."

Custer's numerous beagles, wolfhounds and foxhounds shared his food tent and bed to the annoyance of his wife. His two favorite pets were Turk, a white bulldog and Byron, a greyhound.

As George Custer and his 7th Cavalry left Fort Abraham Lincoln in the Dakota Territory for the Little Big Horn, the band played "The Girl I Left Behind Me."

Custer's last stand was immortalized in Larry Verne's whimsical 1960 #1 hit "Mr. Custer."
  • The song's live music video was filmed during Slipknot's appearance in the 2014 fall at their Knotfest concert in San Bernardino, California.

    Touch Too Much Lyrics

It was one of those nights
When you turned out the lights
    And everything comes into view
    She was taking her time
    I was losing my mind
There was nothing that she wouldn't do
    It wasn't the first
    It wasn't the last
She knew we was making love
    I was so satisfied
    Deep down inside
Like a hand in a velvet glove

Seems like a touch, a Touch Too Much
Seems like a touch, a touch too much
Too much for my body, too much for my brain
This kind of woman's gonna drive me insane
She's got a touch, a touch too much

She had the face of an angel
    Smiling with sin
A body of Venus with arms
    Dealing with danger
    Stroking my skin
Let the thunder and lightening start
    It wasn't the first
    It wasn't the last
It wasn't that she didn't care
    She wanted it hard
    And wanted it fast
She liked it done medium rare

Seems like a touch, a touch too much
Seems like a touch, a touch too much
Too much for my body, too much for my brain
This kind of woman's gonna drive me insane
She's got a touch, a touch too much

Seems like a touch, touch too much
You know it's much too much, much too much
I really want to feel your touch too much
Girl you know you're getting me much too much
    Seems like a touch
    Just a dirty little touch
    I really need your touch
'Cause you're much too much too much

Seems like a touch, a touch too much
Seems like a touch, a touch too much
Too much for my body, too much for my brain
This kind of woman's gonna drive me insane
She's got a touch, a touch too much

  • This is about the dangers of excess, which the band was quite familiar with. They were notorious for their wild parties, girls, and drinking. Lead singer Bon Scott drank himself to death six months after this was released.
  • Released as a single, this became just the second AC/DC song to chart in the UK, following "Rock 'N' Roll Damnation," which made #24.
  • Bon Scott's last performance was when he lip-synched this song when the band performed it on Top of the Pops, a popular British music show. The show aired February 7, 1980; Scott died 12 days later.
  • Considering how many of their songs are about drinking, it is surprising that AC/DC guitarist Angus Young didn't touch the stuff. When he was young, a bad encounter with Bond 7 Australian whiskey turned him off from alcohol.

If Rain Is What You Want Lyrics

    It’s been years since anyone
    Could be a friend
It’s the fear that kills the feeling
    In the end
    Can we face it?
    Can we shape it?
    Can we really die?
If Rain Is What You Want
All you have to do is close your eyes
    Just close your eyes

    I have watched your resurrection
    Start to crawl
Is there any chance in hell? (Any chance in hell?)
    Any chance at all?
Do we need it? Do we see it?
    Is it really there?
If rain is what you want
    Then take your seats
    Enjoy the fall
    Enjoy the fall

    (Enjoy the fall)
The only thing deeper than my last breath
The only thing darker than my last death
    Is the panic, the static
I've come back from the dead
    For my solace
    We'll never sleep again

    In these diamonds
    We’re left with colored glass
    As pressure takes its toll
    We will outlast
But you can’t break my heart
As long as I can be myself
    I’ll never fall apart
And you can’t take me in
If I’m not broken, break me down
So I will never feel alone again

The only thing deeper than my last breath
The only thing darker than my last death
    Is the panic, the static
I've come back from the dead
    For my solace
    We'll never sleep again

    My solace
    We'll never sleep again

    My solace
    We'll never sleep again

    My solace
    We'll never sleep again

    My solace
    We'll never sleep again

  • Slipknot lost their bassist Paul Gray in 2010 after he accidentally overdosed. The title of .5: The Gray Chapter and many of its lyrics reference the fallen soldier, including this closing track. Frontman Corey Taylor told Kerrang! "This is the melancholy look at how people wanted us to deal with Paul's death, and listening to that song I see us on a stage, just in silence, and millions of people looking at us with ideas of how we should grieve already set in their minds, and maybe that's completely opposite with how we were trying to deal with it, and lyrically it's us saying, 'Look, we're the only ones that really understand what we're going through. You can expect us to break down and cry, but at some point we have to stand back up.'"
