Ice Cream Man Lyrics

(Dedicate one to the ladies...)
Now summertime's here babe, need somethin' to keep you cool
Ah now summertime's here babe, need somethin' to keep you cool
Better look out now though, Dave's got somethin' for you
Tell ya what it is
I'm your Ice Cream Man, stop me when I'm passin' by
Oh my my, I'm your ice cream man, stop me when I'm passin' by
See now all my flavors are guaranteed to satisfy
Hold on a second baby
I got good lemonade, ah, dixie cups
All flavors and push ups too
I'm your ice cream man, baby, stop me when I'm passin' by
See now all my flavors are guaranteed to satisfy
Hold on, one more
Well, I'm usually passin' by just about eleven o'clock

H huh, I never stop, I'm usually passin' by, just around eleven o'clock
And if you let me cool you one time, you'll be my regular stop
All right boys
I got good lemonade, ah, Dixie cups

I'll flavors and push ups too
I'm your ice cream man, stop me when I'm passin' by
See now all my flavors are guaranteed to satisfy
Yes I'm your ice cream man, stop me when I'm passin' by
I'm your ice cream man, stop me when I'm passin' by
They say all my flavors are guaranteed to satisfy
Ah, one time
I'm your ice cream man, stop me when I'm passin' by
I'm your ice cream man, stop me when I'm passin' by
They say all my flavors are guaranteed to satisfy
One time, boys
I'm your ice cream man
I'm your ice cream man
Be-be-be-be-be-be-be-baby
Ah my, my, my
All my flavors are guaranteed to satis-uh-fy

Ice Cream Man Song Chart
  • This was written and originally recorded by the Chicago blues musician John Brim. Born in 1922, Brim recorded this at Chess Records in 1953. In 1994, he released a compilation album called The Ice Cream Man.
  • This is one of David Lee Roth's favorites. He pushed to get it on Van Halen's first album as a tribute to the blues.
  • The first verse is just Roth singing and playing acoustic guitar. The full band joins in after that.
  • Like many American blues songs, the lyrics are loaded with double entendres, making it a perfect song for David Lee Roth to sing. At the beginning of the song, Roth says, "Dedicate one to the ladies," making it clear that when he brags that his "flavors are guaranteed to satisfy," he's not talking about the frozen treat.
  • This was one of two covers on Van Halen's first album. The other, "You Really Got Me," was their first single.
  • Van Halen included this on a cassette they gave Gene Simmons before they had a record deal. Simmons didn't like this song, but let them record it anyway when he flew them to New York to make a demo. They didn't get a deal out of it, but when Warner Brothers finally signed them, the songs on the demo, including this, made up much of their first two albums.
  • In 1659 the Sicilian chef Francesco Procopia dei Coltelli perfected the making of ice cream. Twenty seven years later dei Coltelli opened Le Procope, the first cafe in Paris. Here after being considered a dessert for royalty alone, ice cream was made available to the general public for the first time. When I Look Into Your Eyes Lyrics

I see forever when I look in your eyes
    You're all I ever wanted
I always want you to be mine
Let's make a promise till the end of time
    We'll always be together
And our love will never die

So here we are face to face
    And heart to heart
I want you to know we will
    Never be apart
Now I believe that wishes can come true
'Cause I see my whole world
    I see only you

When I Look Into Your Eyes
I can see how much I love you
    And it makes me realize
When I look into your eyes
I see all my dreams come true
When I look into your eyes

I've looked for you all of my life
    Now that I've found you
    We will never say goodbye
    I can't stop this feeling
    There's nothing I can do
'Cause I see everything when I look at you.

  • When it came time to write songs for FireHouse's second album, their primary songwriters set out to compose something similar to the big hit from their debut album, "Love of a Lifetime." CJ Snare (vocals) and Bill Leverty (guitar).

Once again, they came up with a big, romantic ballad, this time about seeing forever staring into a lover's eyes. It did the trick, becoming nearly as big a hit and fitting in very well among the hair metal power ballads of the early '90s.

I live my life like there's no tomorrow
And all I've got I had to steal
Least I don't need to beg or borrow
Yes I'm living at a pace that kills
    Runnin' With The Devil
    Runnin' with the devil
I found the simple life ain't so simple
When I jumped out on that road
I got no love, no love you'd call real
Ain't got nobody waiting at home
    Runnin' with the devil
    Runnin' with the devil
You know I, I found the simple life, weren't so simple, no

Runnin' With The Devil Song Chart
  • This is the first song on the first Van Halen album. It starts with a backwards blare of car horns, which was made by a contraption Eddie Van Halen put together using a bunch of horns, a car battery, and a footswitch. They used to use it when they played at clubs.
  • Van Halen included this song on a demo Gene Simmons produced for them in 1977. After seeing them in concert, Simmons flew the band to New York, bought them clothes, and set up a recording session. They didn't get a record deal out of it, but gained valuable experience.
  • Gene Simmons had the idea for the car horns at the beginning. He had the band do this on the 1977 "House Of Pain" demo he produced for them.
  • At one point, David Lee Roth says, "Goddamn it lady, you know I ain't lyin' too ya, I'm gonna tell you one time." Roth was never eloquent, but he was occasionally introspective (see "Hang 'Em High"), and even poetic (see "Secrets"). (thanks, Doug - Appleton, WI, for above 2)
  • The song contains many of the things Van Halen became famous for: David Lee Roth's squeal, Eddie's guitar solo, and Michael Anthony's backup vocals.
  • Eddie's guitar is on the cover of the album. He pieced it together using parts of different guitars until he got the sound and feel he wanted. It is striped black and white on the album, but Eddie later painted it red.
  • This was easy for the band to record because they did not use many studio tricks. They pretty much recorded what they had been playing live for years. Later Van Halen albums became much more complicated.
  • Van Halen opened concerts for Journey and Black Sabbath after releasing this album, helping it sell over 5 million copies as more people found out about them.
  • This gets constant play on classic rock radio. It was not played a lot when it first came out because nobody had heard of Van Halen, so it was never burned out.
  • Adam Sandler pretends to play this with a devil-horned blade he uses as a guitar at the beginning of the 2001 movie Little Nicky. The song also appears in the pilot for the 1999 TV series Freaks and Geeks, and in the movies Lost & Found (1999) and Ready To Rumble (2000).
  • This bears a strong resemblance to Pink Floyd's similarly titled song "Run Like Hell," particularly in the intro (one note on the bass played over and over interrupted by a guitar with echo). Both songs were released within a year of each other, so it is probably just a coincidence. (thanks, Eric - Suffern, NY)
  • This was featured in a 2016 commercial for the Acura NSX that first aired during the Super Bowl.

    Don't Treat Me Bad Lyrics

I never thought you'd hurt me
I guess you live and learn
That when you're playin' with fire you're bound to get burned
I've been mistreated, I've been used before
I get kicked in the face still I come back for more

But I won't cry no more 'cause the tears are all in vain
We can pick up the pieces and start it all again
Let's just get back to the way it was before
Oh, girl I can't take anymore

    [Chorus]
    Baby, Don't Treat Me Bad
Well, this could be the best thing that you'll ever have
    Baby, don't treat me bad
(Well) you can do anything, but baby, don't treat me bad
    Oh, don't treat me bad

I gave it everything, but you threw it all away
I can't take anymore of these games that you play
I've been through heartache and I've been through pain
And it's hard to believe you still treat me this way

But I won't cry no more 'cause the tears are all in vain
We can pick up the pieces and start it all again
Let's just get back to the way it was before
Oh, girl I can't take anymore

  • FireHouse is best-known for their sweeping power ballads, but before "Love of a Lifetime" came this song, which is an upbeat rocker about a guy who gets mistreated by his girl but can't give her up. Released as the band's debut single, it made an impressive showing on the US charts, but it soon became clear that these hair metal upstarts would be known for their love songs.
  • A band composition, this one was not about a specific person. In our interview with FireHouse frontman CJ Snare , he explained: "Sometimes songs really are personal and sometimes they really, really aren't. I remember sitting down at the piano and coming up with that chord progression, but it sounds really different on piano, obviously, than it did on guitar. I had the first verse, bridge, and chorus, and then I brought it to the other guys in the band and we hammered out the rest of the song. Mostly Bill [Leverty, guitarist] and myself."
  • The women in hair metal songs were often either heartbreaking vixens or deceitful dames getting a kiss-off. This song is a combination of both, as the singer can't give her up, but also warns her that he might be the best thing she's ever had. These songs blending swagger and vulnerability could help bolster a band's male fansbase, offsetting the wuss factor of their ballads.

FireHouse was clearly trying to introduce a devious and somewhat psychotic female character with this song, as evidenced by the video (directed by Mark Rezyka), which intercuts concert footage of the band with a girl destroying his stuff (Not my Hendrix poster!). The album cover also portrayed a lady of the unhinged variety, showing her in the foreground with a smoldering match while a house burns down behind her.

Take this pink ribbon off my eyes
    I'm exposed
    And it's no big surprise
    Don't you think I know
    Exactly where I stand
    This world is forcing me
    To hold your hand
'Cause I'm Just A Girl, little ol' me
Well don't let me out of your sight
Oh, I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite
So don't let me have any rights
Oh, I've had it up to here!

The moment that I step outside
    So many reasons
For me to run and hide
I can't do the little things
    I hold so dear
'Cause it's all those little things
    That I fear

    'Cause I'm just a girl
    I'd rather not be
'Cause they won't let me drive
    Late at night
    Oh I'm just a girl
Guess I'm some kind of freak
'Cause they all sit and stare
    With their eyes
    Oh I'm just a girl
Take a good look at me
    Just your typical prototype
Oh, I've had it up to here!

Oh, am I making myself clear?

    I'm just a girl
I'm just a girl in the world
That's all that you'll let me be!

Oh I'm just a girl, living in captivity
    Your rule of thumb
    Make me worry some
Oh I'm just a girl, what's my destiny?
    What I've succumbed to
    Is making me numb
Oh I'm just a girl, my apologies
What I've become is so burdensome
Oh I'm just a girl, lucky me
    Twiddle-dum there's no comparison

Oh, I've had it up to!

  • This was written by Gwen Stefani after her brother Eric, No Doubt's primary songwriter up to then, left the band. She wrote it about being frustrated at her father being overprotective due to her gender, saying at the time: "I wouldn't trade being female, for anything, but the guys don't understand what a burden it can be sometimes."
  • For years the band was trying to get played on Los Angeles radio station KROQ, but were ignored. Finally KROQ began playing this song, and got massive amounts of requests for it, fulfilling the band's dream.
  • No Doubt made their late night TV debut on The Conan O'Brien Show playing this song. They later performed the song on David Letterman's show.
  • No Doubt were touring as the opening act for Bush when this became a hit. Stefani started going out with Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale, and they got engaged in 2001. They tied the knot on September 14th, 2002. Even Gavin's dog was in attendance. (thanks, Dani - Regina, Canada)
  • The band is from California. The album title is a play on "Magic Kingdom," the nickname for Disneyland.
  • This was played over the opening credits of the '97 box office hit Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, starring Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe from Friends) and Oscar winner Mira Sorvino. (thanks, Britney - Calabasas, CA)
  • No Doubt performed this at the 2003 Super Bowl between the Bucs and Raiders. Unlike Shania Twain, who was on before her, Gwen Stefani did not lip-sync. After they performed the song, Sting came out and sang "Message In A Bottle" with them. The game aired on ABC, which is owned by Disney, who was either willing to overlook the "Tragic Kingdom" album title or didn't know about it.
  • This plays in Clueless at the beginning of the movie when Cher goes to pick up Dionne and she just rolls over everything.
  • Regarding the video, Stefani recalled to MTV News that she bought the red, white and blue tennis top she wore during her performance of the song in the bathroom at a thrift store. She then applied fake diamonds to it, an early indicator of her talent for clothes designing. Did you spot the very pregnant girl, who has a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo? That’s Stefani’s younger sister, Jill.
  • When playing this at a Virgin Megastore in Costa Mesa, California, lead singer Gwen Stefani's mother asked her not to swear because their relatives were present. When Gwen swore, her mother refused to speak to her for a week.

  • This song was written by Patti Smith and her late husband, Fred "Sonic" Smith. Patti told NME how they tried to infuse the spirit of the '60s into a modern protest song: "We had both protested the Vietnam War when we were young. We had been part of the '60s, where our cultural voice was really strong, and we were trying to write a song that would reintroduce that kind of energy. It's sad for me but quite beautiful. It was really Fred's song - even though I wrote the words, he wrote the music; the concept was his, and he wanted it to be a song that people sang all over the world to inspire them for different causes. And he didn't live to see that happen, but I have. I've seen people. I've walked in marches all over the world where people spontaneously started singing it, you know, whether it's been in Paris or with the Palestinians or, you know, in Spain or New York City, Washington D.C. - and it's so moving for me to see his dream realized."
  • Patti remembers the moment Fred burst into their kitchen with the idea for this song: "It was around 1986. I was in the kitchen. My late husband was writing music, and he was a great songwriter, Fred "Sonic" Smith, and we were writing some songs together. And I was peeling potatoes, and I remember I was in a bad mood because I had, you know, I was making dinner and washing the clothes and peeling potatoes. And in the middle of it, Fred came in and said, 'Tricia, people have the power, write it.' And I was standing there with a potato peeler thinking I'd like to have the power to make him peel these potatoes, that's what I'd like... but I kept him.

So for the next few nights, I really contemplated - because Fred was very political, and we talked about it, what we wanted to do with this line, which was Fred's. And what we wanted to do was remind the listener of their individual power but also of the collective power of the people, how we can do anything. That's why at the end it goes, 'I believe everything we dream can come to pass, through our union we can turn the world around, we can turn the earth's revolution.' We wrote it consciously together to inspire people, to inspire people to come together."
  • This song hit #19 on the Mainstream Rock chart.

    Diary Of Torture Song Chart
  • This death metal track would be lurid enough if it were not grounded solidly in fact. Subtitled "Robert Berdella," the Chicago band based it on the crimes of this little known but incredibly depraved serial killer.

On April 2, 1988, a young man naked but for a dog collar (though not the type worn by vicars), jumped from an upper floor window of a house in Kansas City. The man who escaped from 4315 Charlotte Street had injured his foot in the fall, but his other injuries were shocking in the extreme; he had been imprisoned for weeks and had been repeatedly tortured. His appearance in such bizarre circumstances led to the arrest of Robert Andrew Berdella.

The details of Berdella's crimes need not be spelled out here, it will suffice to say that he is known to have committed at least six murders. Although murder was capital in Kansas, Berdella escaped the death penalty, but died in prison of a heart attack in October 1992 aged 43. He did indeed keep a diary of torture. Fallin' Song Chart
  • This opens with a bit of classical music by Chopin, who Keys called "my dawg." She studied artists like Chopin, Beethoven, and Mozart when she played the piano growing up (she was born Alicia Augello-Cook, but took the stage name Keys because of the piano imagery).

Unlike modern samples, classical music is fair game for reinterpretation, and can be used without paying for it. Since it is hundreds of years old, there is no one who can claim rights to the music and collect publishing/songwriting royalties.
  • This was the first single from Keys, who was 20 years old when it was released, but had started writing the song three years earlier. A prodigy who signed with Columbia records when she was 16, Keys wrote the song while she was at the label. Her Columbia album never materialized, as she never clicked with their vision. When she was 18, she left for J Records, a new label founded by Clive Davis. Under Davis, she was given more creative freedom, which worked out very well. "Fallin'" was a huge hit and validated Davis' strategy.
  • This song is about the emotions that occur when you care very deeply for a person. Keys was going through a turbulent relationship when she wrote it, which inspired the song. It was a case of young love being vivid, as it was a new experience. "Your first one affects you even more so because you don't have the experience to know how to play it," Keys said. "You're tripping your way through it, and those hardships and good times and just growing is how 'Fallin'' developed."

Keys says that writing the song helped her work things out in the relationship.
  • The video shows Keys visiting her boyfriend... in jail.

The scenes showing Key visiting her incarcerated boyfriend complimented the song's ruminations on the pain of love. They were inspired by the case of Santra Rucker, who was sentenced to 13 consecutive life sentences for conspiracy to sell drugs because her boyfriend was a dealer. The story struck home with Keys, who became a pen pal with the imprisoned Rucker. The singer told The Guardian: "I wanted to show the realism behind love.... I know people who've gone to jail. It don't mean you stop loving them. It could be me in there."

Keys wanted to play the convict in the video, but her record company didn't want her showing up in prison garb in her first clip. It was a rare instance of Keys being overruled in a creative decision, but it was probably the right call, as the video showcased her striking beauty in a number of backdrops.
  • The music video was directed by Chris Robinson, who helmed clips for many R&B/Hip-Hop acts including Usher ("The Color of Love"), Erykah Badu ("Love of My Life") and Boyz II Men ("The Color of Love").
  • The success of this song led to great anticipation for the album, which debuted at #1 and stayed there for three weeks, even beating out P. Diddy's album.

On the strength of this single, the album Songs In A minor sold over 11 million copies worldwide. It was a good time for album sales, as digital distribution (legal and otherwise) encouraged single song downloads over the next few years.
  • Clive Davis had Keys perform this at his Grammy party, which was attended by lots of industry bigwigs. This led to an appearance on Jay Leno, which got her a great deal of publicity.
  • Keys got a big break when she performed this on Oprah before the album was released. Clive Davis wrote Oprah a personal letter to help get her on show.
  • According to Keys, her mother, who raised her on her own (her dad split when she was two years old), helped inspire this song. Her mom could drive Alicia crazy at times, but her love for her was unwavering.
  • This won the 2001 MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist In A Video. Keys performed this on the show, opening with a piano piece by Beethoven.
  • Despite the backing of Clive Davis, it was feared that this song wouldn't get playlisted. However, it went on to become one of the best-selling singles of 2001. Keys later reflected to Entertainment Weekly: ''There were so many people who didn't believe in it, because it went so much against the state of radio at the time. And just the journey of writing it - about how when you love someone but you're in and out, the struggle... When I sing it, I remember the years and years it took to get to a place where people would hear it, and I'm just so grateful."
  • Keys performed this on the 2001 season premiere of Saturday Night Live.
  • This won the 2001 Grammys for Song of the Year, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B Song. Keys performed this on the show and also won awards for Best New Artist and Best R&B Album.
  • Keys performed a version of this with Elmo on Sesame Street called "Dancin'."
  • In 2003, after the second season of American Idol, judge Simon Cowell banned this song from the show because contestants kept singing it and the judges couldn't take it any more. It wasn't the only song to get the Idol ax; others to share this honor include "Candle In The Wind" and "I Will Always Love You."

It doesn't even matter how hard you try
    Keep that in mind
    I designed this rhyme
    To explain in due time
    All I know
    Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
    The clock ticks life away

    It's so unreal
    Didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on, but you didn't even know
Wasted it all just to watch you go
    I kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
    What it meant to me
Will eventually be a memory of a time when

    I tried so hard
    And got so far
    But In The End
    It doesn't even matter
    I had to fall
    To lose it all
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter

One thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try,
    Keep that in mind
    I designed this rhyme,
To remind myself of a time when
    I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
    I'm surprised it got so
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me in the end
    You kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when

    I tried so hard
    And got so far
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter
    I had to fall
    To lose it all
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter

I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
    For all this
There's only one thing you should know
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
    For all this
There's only one thing you should know

    I tried so hard
    And got so far
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter
    I had to fall
    To lose it all
    But in the end
    It doesn't even matter

  • The lyrics are based on the struggles lead singer Chester Bennington went through growing up. He was often picked on.
  • This video was shot on a Los Angeles sound stage. The statue's head, where the band is performing, was built there, but the rest was CGI. The areas where Mike is standing "in the desert" are real - he was sitting on real grass and he was walking on real stones, but they were about 10 feet by 5 feet. The rest was, you guessed it, CGI. Halfway through filming, directors Joe Hahn and Nathan Cox decided to set water pipes off above the band, so they all got completely soaked. Nathan could see how irritated the band were by this, so he invited his friend (who's in a Bluegrass band) over and he performed some Linkin Park songs, including an hilarious version of "Crawling." In the video, if you look very closely, you can see Joe's belt buckle, which says "MR HAHN." The song is about feeling like there's no point in living, and was originally seen as being very negative, so the video was very positive. It's like a cycle of life (the song starts and ends with the piano) - the desert is very dead, but the rain comes and at the end, there's flowers and rivers and butterflies. • In March 2001, 15-year-old Charles Andrew Williams shot and killed two of his classmates at his high school in Santee, California. He left a note for his father with the lyrics to this as an attempt to explain his feelings. The key lines were "I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end, it doesn't really matter."
  • The video was shot in a California desert while the band was between stops on the 2001 Ozzfest tour.
  • Hybrid Theory was the #1 selling album of 2001.
  • This was the third single from Linkin Park's first album. Their first two singles were "One Step Closer" and "Crawling." All three songs explore the dark side of growing up.
  • "Hybrid Theory" is the original name of the band. They decided to use it as the album title.
  • This was released as a single about nine months after the album. It took a while for the album to catch on, but it eventually sold very well.
  • On their 2002 album Reanimation, this was remixed by Kutmasta Kurt with vocals by Motion Man. The title was changed to "Enth E Nd," and it was given a hip-hop sound.
  • At the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, this won for Best Rock Video. Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth, who were touring together at the time, presented the award. Before announcing the winner, Roth asked Hagar what his favorite Linkin Park song was, and Hagar said he didn't know any Linkin Park songs.
  • Mike Shinoda: "I remember putting this together in our rehearsal studio on Hollywood and Vine, working overnight in a room with no windows. I had no idea what time of day it was; I just slept when I was tired, and worked on this song until it took shape. The first guy to hear it was Rob, who told me (I'm paraphrasing) that this was 'exactly the kind of song he wanted us to write." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

  • Also known as "The Worms Crawl In," this delightful ditty is thought to have originated from the First World War or earlier. Certainly fragments of the lyrics predate the 20th Century, and although our ancestors lacked the technology that makes possible gory horror films like ...Dream Warriors, they certainly did not lack lurid imaginations.

Whether or not it is entirely or partly of American origin, it was popularized by the New England author Alvin Schwartz (1927-92), who included the lyrics of what might be called his version in Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark. This 1981 book was written for children, though many people - including those who run the American Library Association - did not consider it entirely suitable for young minds.
