It's Been Awhile Lyrics

And It's Been Awhile
Since I could hold my head up high
And it's been awhile
Since I first saw you
And it's been awhile
Since I could stand on my own two feet again
And it's been awhile
Since I could call you

And everything I can't remember
As fucked up as it all may seem
The consequences that I've rendered
I've stretched myself beyond my means

And it's been awhile
Since I can say that I wasn't addicted
And it's been awhile
Since I can say I love myself as well
And it's been awhile
Since I've gone and fucked things up just like I always do
And it's been awhile
But all that shit seems to disappear when I'm with you

And everything I can't remember
As fucked up as it all may seem
The consequences that I've rendered
I've gone and fucked things up again

Why must I feel this way?
Just make this go away
Just one more peaceful day!

And it's been awhile
Since I could look at myself straight
And it's been awhile
Since I said I'm sorry
And it's been awhile
Since I've seen the way the candles light your face
And it's been awhile
But I can still remember just the way you taste

And everything I can't remember
As fucked up as it all may seem to be I know it's me
I cannot blame this on my father
He did the best he could for me

And it's been awhile
Since I could hold my head up high
And it's been awhile
Since I said I'm sorry

  • In this song, Aaron Lewis sings about a girl who left a long time ago. He cant get over her and he feels ashamed of himself. (thanks, Brad - Geneva, NY)
  • In the video, the woman being sung to by Staind lead singer Aaron Lewis is actually his wife, Vanessa. They have been married since 1998. Vanessa likes to use her digital camera to record portions of every Staind concert. She gets shots of both the band and the crowd. Then the band sometimes watches the footage after the show.
  • The video was directed by Staind mentor and lead singer of Limp Bizkit, Fred Durst.
  • In 2001, NBC used this in promos for its show UC: Undercover.
  • A live version of this song appears at the end of Break The Cycle on some releases. (thanks, Elliot - St. Louis, MO)

    Slow Lyrics

    I’m Slowing down the tune
    I never liked it fast
You want to get there soon
I want to get there last

    It’s not because I’m old
It’s not the life I led
    I always liked it slow
    That’s what my momma said

    I’m lacing up my shoe
But I don’t want to run
I’ll get here when I do
    Don’t need no starting gun

    It’s not because I’m old
And it’s not what dying does
    I always liked it slow
    Slow is in my blood

    I always liked it slow:
    I never liked it fast
With you it’s got to go:
With me it’s got to last

    It’s not because I’m old
    It’s not because I’m dead
    I always liked it slow
    That’s what my momma said

    All your moves are swift
    All your turns are tight
    Let me catch my breath
I thought we had all night

I like to take my time
I like to linger as it flies
    A weekend on your lips
    A lifetime in your eyes

    I always liked it slow:
    I never liked it fast
With you it’s got to go:
With me it’s got to last

    It’s not because I’m old
It’s not the life I led
    I always liked it slow
    That’s what my momma said

    I’m slowing down the tune
    I never liked it fast
You want to get there soon
I want to get there last

    So baby let me go
    You’re wanted back in town
In case they want to know
I’m just trying to slow it down

  • This song finds Cohen arguing that his slowness is a lifelong predilection and not just a sign of encroaching mortality:

    It's not because I'm old
It's not the life I led
    I always liked it slow

Cohen is self-depreciating about his preference for a dilatory pace both in terms of slow sex ("Let me catch my breath. I thought we had all night") and his dedication to taking time to find the right words and the right melody for his creative output. "I've said it before - being a songwriter is like being a nun: you're married to a mystery," Cohen said to hearty laughter during a playback for the Popular Problems album. "My methods are obscure and not to be replicated. A song will yield itself if you stick with it long enough. But you've got to stick with it for a very long time."

    One Vision Lyrics

God works in mysterious ways, mysterious ways
Hey, one man one goal ha, one mission
One heart one soul just one solution
One flash of light yeah, one God, One Vision

    One flesh one bone
    One true religion
    One voice one hope
    One real decision
    Wowowowowowo gimme one vision
    Hey

    No wrong no right
I'm gonna tell you there's no black and no white
    No blood no stain
All we need is one world wide vision

    One flesh, One bone
    One true religion
    One race, One hope
    One real decision
Wowowowowo woh yeah oh yeah oh yeah

    I had a dream
    When I was young
    A dream of sweet illusion
A glimpse of hope and unity
And visions of one sweet union
    But a cold wind blows
    And a dark rain falls
And in my heart it shows
Look what they've done to my dream, yeah

    One vision
    So give me your hands
    Give me your hearts
    I'm ready
    There's only one direction
    One world one nation
    Yeah one vision

    No hate, No fight
    Just excitation
    All through the night
    It's a celebration
    Wowowowowowo yeah
One one one one one one one
One vision hey one vision one vision one vision one vision

    One flesh, One bone
    One true religion
    One voice, One hope
    One real decision

    Gimme one light, yeah
    Gimme one hope, hey

  • Queen was inspired to write this by their Live Aid appearance in 1985 - millions of people sharing one vision of a better world.

When the band was approached to perform at Live Aid, they were in a rut and reticent to appear. But after their show-stopping performance, they re-entered the studio with renewed energy. They were back in Munich (a place they had previously hit trouble during the Hot Space sessions), but this time spent a lot of time working in the studio, not being distracted by drugs or other distractions - unlike the earlier sessions.
  • All four band members helped write this. Most Queen songs were written separately, mostly out of a desire to keep writing credits to themselves - Brian May has often hinted in interviews that he was quite possessive of his own songs. But this also made sure their songs didn't all sound alike.

The idea of writing a song together came from Freddie Mercury. He rang the other three members and asked them to come to the studio, where the writing and recording sessions were taped.
  • The band decided that the song would be credited to all four of them, but it was basically composed by Brian May (chords) and Roger Taylor (lyrics). Freddie Mercury was in charge of production and arrangements, and he polished what the others composed.

This was one of the first times that the band distributed a joint songwriting credit; for their entire career songs had been credited to the original band member who wrote them, even if other band members contributed. For One Vision, the band decided on a joint credit, which would become the norm from next album The Miracle onwards.
  • The synth part in the intro was played by guitarist Brian May. The weird voice at the start actually says "God moves in mysterious ways," although is often misheard as "on the city streets today." (thanks, Sebas - Tokyo, Japan, for above 3)
  • The video was the first that Austrian duo The Torpedo Twins directed for Queen. They have worked on many Queen videos since.
  • In sports videos, this is often used as background music.
  • This was released as a single before the album was finished.
  • This was used in the 1986 movie Iron Eagle, starring Louis Gossett, Jr. It was like Top Gun, but not nearly as good.
  • The final line is an in-joke from Freddie Mercury, where he shouts "Fried chicken!" instead of "one vision." It's likely that this was merely a humorous aside rather than a caustic social commentary.
  • A documentary was made around the recording of this track, showing the band members working on the song in the studio with producer Mack (who had been working with the band since 1980). It shows the lyrics coming together (Taylor and Mercury discussing various ideas which "won't fit" before coming on "one true religion"), and a hilarious guide vocal take where Mercury sings the alternate lyrics "one dump, one turd, two tits, John Deacon!" in the chorus.

The band were reportedly unhappy with having a documentary crew around, feeling that it forced them to act up to the camera and didn't act naturally as themselves in the studio. Nevertheless, it has been included on many video compilations and the re-release of the A Kind of Magic album.
  • "One Vision" became the band's de facto opening song for the 1986 Magic tour, agreed by many to be the band's finest ever live shows.

    You Got Me Singing Lyrics

    You Got Me Singing
Even tho’ the news is bad
    You got me singing
The only song I ever had

    You got me singing
    Ever since the river died
    You got me thinking
Of the places we could hide

    You got me singing
Even though the world is gone
    You got me thinking
    I’d like to carry on

    You got me singing
Even tho’ it all looks grim
    You got me singing
    The Hallelujah hymn

    You got me singing
Like a prisoner in a jail
    You got me singing
Like my pardon’s in the mail

    You got me wishing
    Our little love would last
    You got me thinking
Like those people of the past

    You got me singing
Even though the world is gone
    You got me thinking
    I’d like to carry on

    You got me singing
Even tho’ it all went wrong

  • Popular Problems brings Cohen's near-apocalyptic vision outlined on "The Future" rudely into the present. "When I said: 'I've seen the future, brother, it is murder,' unfortunately, I think that vision has been realized," he told The Daily Telegraph.

However, this final uplifting track finds him in more optimistic mood as he croons, "The bulletin is: 'You got me singing even though the world is gone. You got me thinking I'd like to carry on.'" During a press conference at the Canadian High Commission, someone suggested this was evidence of hidden optimism. "Yeah, I'm a closet optimist," Cohen dryly responded.

  • Freddie Mercury wrote this song for his lover Tony Bastin after they broke up. The topic for the song, with the narrator taking the perspective of someone looking back on past memories of an old relationship/former love, is one Mercury would revisit on "It's A Hard Life" (The Works) and "You Don't Fool Me" (a song made up of sections of lyrics Mercury recorded before his death, and included on the posthumous Made in Heaven album in 1995).

All four members of Queen contributed songs, resulting in a constantly changing sound.
  • The song starts with a series of rushing noises played on an Oberheim OB-X synthesiser. The Game album was a significant turning point for the band - for many years, they proudly noted on their album sleeves that no synthesizers were used on their records - many would assume that to be the case due to the complex instrumentation and sounds the band would achieve via recording tricks and guitar effects/overdubs.

From The Game onwards, the band started to experiment more explicitly with synths, starting with this song and the likes of "Another One Bites The Dust." Session musician Fred Mandel, who played the famous solo in "I Want To Break Free" on a Roland synth keyboard, joked about this in the Days of Our Lives documentary: "The old records used to say prominently 'no synthesizers'. And then I come in like another schmuck and put synthesizers on everything!"
  • The cover of the single was the first time Mercury displayed his soon-to-be-famous moustache, which would become a huge part of his look for many years - although at the time hardcore Queen fans didn't like the change of image, even going as far as to send him disposable razors to shave it off.
  • The B-side to the single for "Play The Game" was "A Human Body," one of Queen's rarest compositions for many years - only being available on the original vinyl releases until it was finally included on the Singles Collection Volume 2 and on the bonus disc to the 2011 CD re-issue of The Game.
  • This song was covered by Jon Brion for the 2005 Queen tribute album Killer Queen. (thanks, Rachel - South Point, OH)

    Portal Lyrics

In the throes of the ruby red
    River that flows through this
Darkening concrete, devouring ghost afloat by
    I'm with them

Up in the current and, taking in whole
    I've been struggling, strangling
Others in toll have my eyes
    Gone missing

    Ooh
    Ooh
    Ooh
    Ooh

Imagining sequences, playing back visions by
    Stereo air and fragmenting emissions
    I've lost and found it
The loneliest thing in the shape of a fist
That I wish I could bring in this bitter abyss
    Is my petrified heart
    Still bound in

    Ooh
    Ooh
    Ooh
    Ooh

Out on a balcony, reaching out to
Design this epiphany and with the sidewalks
    Will do
    And I just,
In the processes through means to the end
It's the glass bottle vessel and
Depths that extend to the spins between us

If I could I'd cut through the cables and cords
    But I'd never be able,
My life's at the table with yours
    Immortal
Nothing is sacred and nothing is sure anymore
Except all that you are and stand for
    Got me toward your Portal
    Your portal, your portal
    Your portal
    Ooh
    Ooh

Lights added that she wrote the song during a very frustrated, uninspired time. "I felt like I lost my knack for writing, I was angry it wasn't coming easily, sort of like I was losing my purpose," she said. "It was sort of a cry for something sure during a time that I had a lot of questions."

    You could buy me diamonds
    You could buy me pearls
Take me on a cruise around the world
Baby you know I'm worth it
    Dinner lit by candles
    Run my bubble bath
Make love tenderly to last, to last
Cause baby you know I'm worth it

Wanna please wanna keep wanna treat your woman right
Not just dough but to show that you know she is worth your time
You will lose if you chose to refuse to put her first
She will if she can find a man who knows her worth

    [Chorus]
Cause a real man, knows a real woman when he sees her
And a real woman knows a real man ain't afraid to please her
And a real woman knows a real man always comes first
And a real man just can't deny A Woman's Worth

    If you treat me fairly
I'll give you all my goods
Treat you like a real woman should
Baby I know you're worth it
    If you never play me
    Promise not to bluff
I'll hold you down when shit gets rough
Cause baby I know you're worth it

She walks the mile makes you smile all the while being true
Don't take for granted the passions that she has for you
You will lose if you chose to refuse to put her first
She will if she can find a man who knows her worth

    Muscle Memory Lyrics

After having spent a fast year
Waiting for the next time I can get you close
I grew used to being back here
Like a chorus synth line soldier at his post

    You call and I respond
    The sparrow and the song
I miss you when you're gone

    When I am alone, I
See you in the dark, I
    Talk into the empty
    Like you were with me
    Started on a cold night
Felt you in the low light
    Noticing the reflex
    Taking over me

I see you when I reach
    Muscle Memory

Again, off into the next fall
I am on the back steps tryin' to let you in
See you standin' in the front hall
Maybe this is madness underneath my skin

    Guess the misery spawns
    Or the body it haunts
And we do what it wants

    When I am alone, I
See you in the dark, I
    Talk into the empty
    Like you were with me
    Started on a cold night
Felt you in the low light
    Noticing the reflex
    Taking over me

I see you when I reach
    Muscle memory
I feel you when I sleep
    Muscle memory

    When you feel the chains
    Of a thousand words
    And I speak your name
    Like I know you heard

    I can feel you there
    I can hear you move
    And it moves me, too

    When I'm playin' games
    When I'm drinkin' wine
    And I see your glass
    Sittin' next to mine

    I can feel you there
    When you're not at home
    Like I'm not alone

    When I am alone, I
See you in the dark, I
    Talk into the empty
    Like you were with me
    Started on a cold night

I got a little change in my pocket goin' jing-a-ling-a-ling
Wants to call you on the telephone baby, a-give you a ring
But each time we talk, I get the same old thing
Always no hug-ee no kiss-ee until I get a weddin' ring
My honey my baby, don't put my love upon no shelf
She said don't hand me no lines and Keep Your Hands To Yourself

B-B-B-baby baby baby why you wan' treat me this way
You know I'm still your lover boy I still feel the same way
That's when she told me a story, 'bout free milk and a cow
And said no hug-ee no kiss-ee until I get a weddin' vow
My honey my baby, don't put my love upon no shelf
She said don't hand me no lines and keep your hands to yourself

    (Go man go)

    Hold it here
See I wanted her real bad, and I was about to give in
But that's when she started talking about true love,
    Started talking about sin
And I said, honey I'll live with you for the rest of my life,
She said no hug-ee no kiss-ee until you make me your wife-a
My honey my baby, don't put my love upon no shelf

  • Lead singer Dan Baird wrote this about the problems their drummer was having with his girlfriend. He wrote it in one sitting on their tour bus.
  • The video portrayed a shotgun wedding, complete with very pregnant bride and actual shotgun. It was directed by Bill Fishman, whose other credits include the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated" and Good Charlotte's "Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous."
  • This was the only hit for the Georgia Satellites, although Dan Baird had a hit as a solo artist in 1992 with "I Love You Period."
  • Many people thought the line "I've got a little change in my pocket, going jingle, linga, ling" was a reference to masturbation. The group denied this.
  • The group was signed to Elektra Records after executives heard a cheaply made 8-track demo of this song. Elektra gave the band a 5-figure budget to cut an entire album of material, but despite attempting several different recordings of "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," none of these takes were as good as the demo. The demo was included on the album, and that is the version you hear. (thanks, Dan - Montreal, Canada)

And the most up on the stones
    Something wicked this way comes

    The world pass in
    He will show you mercy
He will make you his home
    Something wicked this way comes

Hit and [?] to come in
    And drank with him
    He won't be alone
    Something wicked this way comes

    You will fall from grace
And you make me to see his face
He was catch out of hell
    Something wicked this way comes
    Something wicked this way comes

The lights are orange, you never know
    He'll fall a bomb stone
    Something wicked this way comes
    Something wicked
    Something wicked
    Something wicked
    Something wicked
    Something wicked
    Something wicked
    No mercy
    No mercy
    No love
    No love
    No mercy, mercy
    No mercy
    Something wicked
    Something wicked
    Something wicked
    Something wicked
    Something wicked
    Something wicked
    Something wicked

  • When Lucinda Williams was kindergarten age in the late '50s, she and her father, the poet Miller Williams, were invited guests at the Southern Gothic writer Flannery O'Connor's Milledgeville, Georgia house. A decade later, Williams picked up a few books written by O'Connor and immediately ate her darkly humorous short stories up.

"Her stuff influenced and inspired me," Williams told the Tallahassee Democrat. "I read all of it. I just devoured it. I related to it. It just seemed so real to me. I had seen these people. They were real people to me. ... My song 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' is straight from Flannery O'Connor."
  • Williams recalled her fifteen and sixteen-year self devouring Flannery O'Connor's stories to Believer magazine: "Her stuff was so descriptive," she said. "You could just see it—a picture of what she was talking about. I loved that kind of writing, that very descriptive, realistic writing."

"I learned that instead of just saying 'I just left this last town,' why not say the name of the town? Williams added. "Describe the town. Don't just say 'I put my shoes on today,' say 'I put my cracked leather shoes on.'"

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) Lyrics

When I wake up yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you
If I get drunk yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I have yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's havering to you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1,000 miles

To fall down at your door
When I'm working yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I'll do

I'll pass almost every penny on to you
When I come home yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old well I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's growing old with you

When I'm lonely yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's lonely without you
When I'm dreaming yes I know I'm gonna dream
Dream about the time when I'm with you

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) Song Chart
  • The Proclaimers are the Scottish twins Craig and Charlie Reid. This is their only hit in America, but four of their other songs made the UK Top 40, including their first hit, "Letter From America," which went to #3 in 1987.
  • This song is about being devoted to a woman and wanting to spend the rest of your life with her. And it's all sung in a Scottish accent.
  • In the line "I'm gonna be the one who's havering for you," 'havering' means babbling on.
  • This was written in 1988 and released on The Proclaimers album Sunshine On Leith. It became a hit when the song was used in the 1993 movie Benny And Joon, starring Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson.
  • Craig Reid in the Daily Mail, March 23, 2007: "I can remember sitting at the piano and the chords just came to me. I reckon I just wrote the whole thing in 45 minutes. I knew that it was a good song, maybe even a single, but I had no idea how popular it would become."
  • This was a hit in the US after being featured in the movie Benny & Joon after the director heard the song being played on his personal stereo by Mary Ann Waterston. The Proclaimers had no idea it would be featured in the film.
  • It was a #1 hit in Australia.
  • This song was adopted as a theme song by Hibernian Football Club in Scotland.
  • In March 2007 The Proclaimers teamed up with British comedians Peter Kay and Matt Lucas to release a new version for the charity Comic Relief, which topped the UK charts. Peter Kay stars as his wheelchair bound character the Phoenix Club boss Brian Potter and Matt Lucas in turn appears as his similarly wheelchair bound Little Britain character Andy Pipkin. The comedians duet on the first 2 verses of the song before the Proclaimers take over.

The original version returned to the British chart at #37 the same week the Comic Relief version entered the chart at #3 making The Proclaimers become the first act in over 20 years to chart simultaneously with two different recordings of the same song. The last person to achieve this was Lulu, who in the last week of July 1986 had both her original 1964 recording of "Shout" in the Top 75 alongside a brand new "86" version.
  • By 2002, 500 miles just wasn't enough, as Vanessa Carlton used the same lyrical theme, but with twice the distance, in her song "A Thousand Miles."
  • Country duo Haley & Michaels covered this for their 2014 eponymous debut EP. "When I heard it, I listened to it, and I felt like, 'Wait a second, this could take on a whole different meaning if a man and woman were singing it to each other,'" Haley said. "I bounced it off Ryan, and he had actually just heard it, and it was one of those things, it was on both of our minds, and we just started playing it to see what it would sound like."
  • This was featured in a beloved Budweiser commercial that aired during the 2015 Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. A sequel to the previous year's "Puppy Love" spot where the Budweiser Clydesdales befriend a golden retriever puppy, this one finds the dog getting lost, and the horses saving him from a wolf and guiding him home. The song was used to convey the lengths that living creatures will go for love.

The version used in the commercial is a downtempo take on the song performed by Sleeping at Last , which is the one-man operation of Ryan O'Neal. He released the song in 2013.

    Killers & Kings Lyrics

Dark lady read me the future!
    The ancient verse hidden away
I turn from the ever-gray, and

    Tarot cards keep us enraptured!
    Open mind become the sage
    Let this unlock the cage!

    Ancient power
    Darkest hour
Open your third eye and you'll see

    (Killers and kings!)
    Inheritors of Earth
    (Killers and kings!)
    From death there comes rebirth
And as an army we will sing
    A diamond bears our ring
    Killers and kings

Look to Earth, summon the master
    Awake the human living inside
    Ecclessiasticide.

    The hangman gives into temperance
The sun shines over the fool
    High priestess, spreads her rule

    Death and rebirth
    Decay and mirth
Open your third eye and you'll see

    (Killers and kings!)
    Inheritors of Earth
    (Killers and kings!)
    From death there comes rebirth
And as an army we will sing
    A diamond bears our ring
    Killers and kings

    The diamond bears our ring!!
    Yeah!!
    Oh!

The king of pentacles is here
Strength and fortitude help to push away the fear
We stand atop the mountain with the hermit and the lamp
As the lovers in the knight of swords give in to the damned

    What do The cards say?
    The prophecy remains
The devil in the emperor could keep us locked in chains
And the death card doesn't mean you die
It means a change is coming that you simply can't deny

    Reborn!
    Rebirth!
    From death comes rebirth!

    (Killers and kings!)
    Inheritors of Earth
    (Killers and kings!)
    From death there comes rebirth
And as an army we will sing
    A diamond bears our ring
    Killers and kings

    (Killers and kings!)
    Inheritors of Earth
    (Killers and kings!)
    From death there comes rebirth
And as an army we will sing
    A diamond bears our ring
    Killers and kings

  • This is a track from Machine Head's Bloodstone & Diamonds album. Frontman Rob Flynn blogged regarding the long player: "It's still what I would just call classic metal, but we've simplified beats, simplified riffs, taken the unnecessary complicated-ness of something and made it simple. I've even applied that to my lyrics, where I've stripped out a lot of extra words ('the's,' 'and's,' etc), and invented a lyrical technique I call 'clustering,' where you cluster vowels or cluster 'plosives' ('K's,' 'T's,' 'Ch's') together to make it sound heavier, or flow better. It doesn't read all that poetically, but in the song it sounds really cool. "

"I've also really worked hard on sharpening up my rhyme schemes, finding clever places to place rhymes, instead of the usual place at the end of a line, or even again, 'clustering' rhymes. It makes an abstract concept like 'Killers & Kings' (which references 20+ Tarot Cards, and that I'm very proud of the end result) to have a real meaning."
  • A 10-inch vinyl single containing the "demo" version of the song was originally released on April 19, 2014, as part of that year's Record Store Day.
