Sloop John B Lyrics

We come on the Sloop John B
My grandfather and me
Around Nassau town we did roam
Drinking all night
Got into a fight
Well I feel so broke up
I want to go home

So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the main sail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up
I want to go home

The first mate he got drunk
And broke in the Cap'n's trunk
The constable had to come and take him away
Sheriff John Stone
Why don't you leave me alone, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up, I want to go home

So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the main sail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, let me go home
Why don't you let me go home
(Hoist up the John B's sail)
Hoist up the John B
I feel so broke up I want to go home
Let me go home

The poor cook he caught the fits
And threw away all my grits
And then he took and he ate up all of my corn
Let me go home
Why don't they let me go home
This is the worst trip I've ever been on

So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the main sail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, let me go home
Why don't you let me go home

Sloop John B Song Chart
  • This is a traditional West Indies tune about a sunken boat. It was adapted in 1951 by Lee Hays of the Weavers (as "The John B Sails") and revived in 1960 by Lonnie Donegan. The Beach Boys' folk music buff, Al Jardine, turned Brian Wilson onto the Kingston Trio's recording of the song. For their updated version, Wilson added elaborate vocals and a 12-string guitar part. He also changed some of the lyrics, including "This is the worst trip since I've been born" to "...I've ever been on" as a wink to acid culture.
  • The song was popularized by The Kingston Trio, who adapted it from a version in poet Carl Sandburg's 1927 songbook The American Songbag. The Kingston Trio's version stays true to the song's Calypso roots, and was released on their first album in 1958. Eight years later, The Beach Boys changed the title to "Sloop John B," and came away with a hit. Their debt to The Kingston Trio goes far beyond this song: The Beach Boys adopted the group's striped, short-sleeved shirts and wholesome persona as well. (thanks, rob - Birmingham, England)
  • This was the biggest hit from The Beach Boys landmark album Pet Sounds. The album was the brainchild of Brian Wilson, and he got the title when Beach Boy Mike Love suggested dogs were the only creatures that would like it. To keep the animal theme, Wilson put some barking dogs on the album.

With Wilson at the controls, the album was recorded at United Western Recorders in Los Angeles, in the studio known as "Western 3." Wilson coaxed a big sound out of the little room, which measured just 14' x 34'.
  • Brian Wilson hired 13 musicians to record this song on a midnight-3am session on July 12, 1965. The session players packed into United Western Recorders in Los Angeles that night were:
    Hal Blaine (drums)
    Carol Kaye (electric bass)
    Al De Lory (keyboards)
    Al Casey (guitar)
    Lyle Ritz (upright bass)
    Billy Strange (guitar)
    Jerry Cole (guitar)
    Frank Capp (Glockenspiel)
    Jay Migliori (clarinet)
Steve Douglas and Jim Horn (flutes)
    Jack Nimitz (sax)
    Charles Britz (engineer)

Billy Strange did some guitar overdubs at another session on December 29, 1965.
  • According to Pop historian Joseph Murrells, this was the Beach Boys' fastest selling record to date - over 500,000 within 2 weeks in the US alone. (thanks, Gary - Auckland, New Zealand)
  • During a discussion and performance at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles in January 2009 Wilson said that Pet Sounds was named using Phil Spector's initials. Wilson's approach to the producing of the album was influenced by Spector's "Wall of Sound" technique.
  • In the movie Forrest Gump, this plays when Forrest is in Vietnam, and the camera shows the latrines. The lines, "This is the worst trip I've ever been on... I wanna go home" are emphasized. (thanks, Natasha - Chico, CA)
  • In the days before digital, recording engineers had a limited number of tracks to work with, so they would sometimes mix-down their recordings to free up extra tracks (losing a generation of recording quality every time). "Sloop John B" was mixed down twice, while all the other songs on the album had at most one mix-down.

How Am I Supposed to Live Without You Lyrics

    I could hardly believe it
When I heard the news today
I had to come and get it straight from you
    They said you were leavin'
    Someone's swept your heart away
From the look upon your face,
    I see it's true
So tell me all about it
Tell me about the plans you're makin'
Then tell me one thing more before I go

Tell me how am supposed to live without you
Now that I've been lovin' you so long
How Am I Supposed to Live Without You
How am I supposed to carry on
When all that I've been livin 'for is gone

I didn't come here for cryin'
    Didn't come here to breakdown
It's just a dream of mine is coming to an end
And how can I blame you
When I build my world around
The hope that one day we'd be so much
    More than friends
And I don't wanna know the price I'm
    Gonna pay for dreaming
When even now it's more than I can take

How Am I Supposed to Live Without You Song Chart
  • Co-written by Bolton with Doug James, this is in the style of the soul songs of the '60s and '70s that often lamented the loss of a lover (like "Since I Lost My Baby" by The Temptations). Bolton did very well covering various Soul ballads from this era.
  • When Laura Branigan took this song to #12 in 1983, it marked Michael Bolton's first big hit as a songwriter. He was in the midst of a career transformation, having fronted the rock band Blackjack in 1979-1980 while still using his real name: Michael Bolotin. With Blackjack, he wrote the song "Love Me Tonight," which made #62 in 1979, but didn't crack the Hot 100 again until Branigan did "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You."

Bolton would soon take matters into his own hands and become a soft rock superstar performing his own songs, but in the mid-'80s he was just trying to write some hits. He told Bruce Pollock around this time: "Right now I've got songs on about 12 or 13 albums. I have no idea whether they're gonna be sung well, whether they'll be produced well, whether any of them will even be singles. But I'm hoping for hits."

Bolton released a self-titled solo album in 1983, the same year this song was a hit for Branigan, but it wasn't until his 1989 album Soul Provider, where he released his own version of this song, that his singing career took off.

Bolton also co-wrote "I Found Someone," which topped out at #90 in 1986 for Branigan, but made #10 when Cher recorded it in 1988.
  • This was the second single from Soul Provider (the title song was the first, peaking at #17). I was also Bolton's first #1 hit. He had another with "When a Man Loves a Woman" in 1991.
  • This song was originally offered to Air Supply to record. The group wanted to do it, but Clive Davis (executive producer and then-owner of Arista Records) wanted the chorus modified and Bolton didn't want any part of the song changed. As a result, Air Supply put the song on "indefinite hold." While Bolton was waiting for Air Supply to record it, he received word that Laura Branigan taped it - not from sheet music (the usual method) but from his demo tape. Branigan's version hit #12 on the Hot 100 and #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary music chart.
  • This won the 1989 Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male.

    What a Fool Believes Lyrics

He came from somewhere back in her long ago
    The sentimental fool don't see
    Trying hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life

    She musters a smile
    For his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
    Only to realize
    It never really was

    [Chorus]
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
    Anybody else would surely know
    He's watching her go

But What a Fool Believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
    What seems to be
    Is always better than nothing
And nothing at all keeps sending him

Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there's a place in her life
    Someday, somewhere, she will return

    [Chorus]

But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
    What seems to be
    Is always better than nothing
    There's nothing at all
But what a fool believes he sees

  • Kenny Loggins co-wrote this with Doobie Brothers lead singer Michael McDonald. Loggins put his version on his album Nightwatch, which was released in July 1978, five months before The Doobies included it on their Minute by Minute album. Loggins' version was never released as a single, but The Doobie Brothers took it to #1 in the US in April 1979.
  • This won Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The album won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus. These were the only Grammys the band ever won.
  • Producer Ted Templeman described this as a "floppy record" and wanted a "floppy feel" for the percussion. So he played drums alongside drummer Keith Knudson "to get the feeling right." They had been recording the song for five or six straight days when he made this decision.
  • This was the band's second US #1, after "Black Water." The Doobie Brothers took on a different sound when they lost lead singer Tom Johnston due to illness in the mid-'70s. Instead of the album rock they were known for, they had more of a soft rock sound with Michael McDonald as lead singer. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Michael McDonald wrote the original version of this song. He presented a fragment of it to Templeman, who encouraged him to continue working on it. Kenny Loggins came in when McDonald got stuck on the bridge of the song. Bassist Tiran Porter had suggested Loggins to McDonald because the two were good friends.
  • McDonald's concept for the lyric was a scenario where two people meet in a restaurant - two people who had a passionate relationship long ago. To the man, the affair was the best thing in his life; to the woman, it was fun, but it was time to move on. In the conversation, the man makes a complete fool of himself. When the woman excuses herself to leave, he doesn't get the message, believing he still has a shot and that their affair was much more meaningful than it actually was. Love makes a man a fool, and even a wise one can't reason it away.
  • While he was waiting for Loggins to arrive at his home, McDonald played some of the songs that were "in progress" and asked his sister Maureen which she thought was best. As Loggins was getting out of his car, he heard McDonald playing a fragment of this. According to Loggins, he heard about three-quarters of the verse's melody (no lyrics), but McDonald stopped at the bridge. Loggins' mind continued without a break... and the song's bridge was born. Then Loggins knocked on the door, introduced himself to McDonald, and demonstrated the bridge that he devised before the two of them could sit down. The lyrics were finished over the telephone the next day.
  • Minute by Minute was the only #1 album the band ever had. It went to #1 in the US but didn't even chart in the UK.
  • The Doobies used an analog synthesizer called a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 on this song.
  • This was the 500th #1 song of the Rock era (taken from when "Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley topped the US singles chart in 1955).

    Three Little Pigs Lyrics

Why don't you, sit right back,
And I, I may tell you, a tale.
A tale of three, little pigs,
    And a big, bad, wolf.

Well the first little piggy, well he was kinda hip.
He spent most of his days, just a dreaming of the city.
And then one day, he bought a guitar.
He moved to Hollywood, to become a star.
But, living on the farm, he knew nothing of the city.
Built his house out of straw, what a pity.
And then one day, jamming on some chords,
Along came the wolf, knocking on his door.

Little Pig, Little Pig, let me in.
Not by the hair of my chinny, chin, chin!
Little Pig, little pig, let me in.
Not by the hair of my chinny, chin, chin!
Well I'm huffing, I'm puffing, I'll blow your house in.
Huffing, puffin, blow your house in.
Huffing, puffin, blow your house in.
Huffing and a puffin and I'll blow your house in!

Well the second little piggy, well he was kinda stoked.
He spent most of his time just a ganga smoking.
Huffing and a puffin down on Venice Beach.
Getting paid money for religious speech.
He built his shelter from what he garbage picked.
Mostly made up of old cans and sticks.
Then one day he was cranking out Bob Marley,
And along came the Wolf on his big bad Harley.

Well the third little piggy, the grade A student.
His daddy was a rock star, named Pig Nugent.
Earned his Masters Degree, from Harvard College.
Built his house from his architect knowledge.
    A tri-level mansion, Hollywood Hills.
Daddy's rock stardom, paid for the bills.
And then one day came the old house smasher
The big bad wolf, the little piggy slasher.

    Well the big bad Wolf,
Well he huffed, and he puffed, all that he could.
And low and behold the little piggy's house stood.
"It's made out of concrete!" The little piggy shouted.
The wolf just frowned, as he pouted.
So they called nine-eleven, like any piggy would.
The sent out Rambo, just as fast, as they could.

"Yo, wolf-face, I'm your worst nightmare, your ass is mine!"

Well the wolf fell dead as you can plainly see.
That's to end the story, for you and me.
If you still give a listen, you just may,
Here the big wolf or little piggy say.

Huffing, puffin, blow your house in.
Huffing and a puffin and I'll blow your house in!
Huffing and a puffin and I'll blow your house in!
Huffing and a puffin and I'll blow your house in!
Huffing and a puffin and I'll blow your house in!

"And the moral of the story is,
A band with no talent can easily amuse
Idiots, with a stupid, puppet show."

  • This, and all the other songs on the album, were all first released on video in 1992. They all had videos accompanying the songs, and it could not be purchased in a music-only format. Because of this, the band billed itself as the world's first video-only band, even though they had released an EP and some singles before the video.
  • The video for this song features a clay-animated reenactment of the fairy tale about the Three Little Pigs. The song tells a distorted version of the classic children's story, with the first two pigs living a slacker lifestyle and the third a very successful pig who summons Rambo to kill the wolf.
  • This features a Beastie Boys-style rap as it tries to parody early attempts at combining rap and rock. Green Jelly was a novelty rap/rock outfit, and this was their only hit.
  • Maynard James Keenan and Danny Carey both were members of Green Jelly before forming Tool. Keenan sings the pig part on this song: "Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin."
  • The group was called Green Jello when this was first released, the name chosen to reflect both the hate the band had for that flavor and the sound they made. They had to change it to Green Jelly after General Foods, the owner of the Jello brand, demanded a name change.
  • The video was directed by Fred Stuhr, who also worked with Tool. He died in a car accident in 1997.

Please believe that, meaning that I keep it a stack

Spit hollow tipped shells at the Narcs with quickness

Been a long time, change gonna come son, I'm optimistic
I hold the steel like Ron O'Neal

Never win, never will, yes I can, yes I will
Put a dot upon your knot then I drill through your grill
Like a dentist, my apprentice speaks with a vengeance
Demented scientists counting bodies in the trenches
That's judges off the benches, got inches for y'all wenches
We plant those hot seeds then drove in cold winters

  • The first single from Wu Tang Clan's A Better Tomorrow album, this takes its name from the late actor who played coke dealer Youngblood Priest in the 1972 Blaxploitation classic Super Fly. RZA compares himself to Ron O'Neal in his verse when the rapper declares that he will win just like O'Neal's Super Fly character does at the end of the movie.
  • The entire Wu-Tang Clan performed the song on the August 6, 2014 episode of The Daily Show. "I think we've been so blessed to have the same job for the past 21 years and not hurt nobody doing it," Method Man said about their performance. "As soon as we came together for one common cause, we knew that what we were doing was something different and something great. And it showed and proved in the end."

Through these misty eyes I see lonely skies
    Lonely road to Babylon
    Where's my family
    And my country
    heaven knows where I belong

    Pack my bags tonight
    Here's one Jacobite
Who must leave or surely die
    Put me on a train
In the pouring rain say farewell
    but don't say goodbye

Seagull carry me, over land and sea
To my own folk, that's where I want to be
    Every beat of my heart
    Tears me further apart
I'm lost and alone in the dark
    I'm going home

    One more glass of wine
    Just for auld lang syne
And the girl I left behind
How I miss her now In my darkest hour
And the way our arms entwine

Seagull carry me, over land and sea
To my own folk, that's where I want to be
    Every beat of my heart
    Tears me further apart
I'm lost and alone in the dark
    I'm going home

    And we'll drink a toast
    To the blood red rose
    Cheer a while the
    Emerald Isle
    And to the northern lights
    And the swirling pipes
How they make a grown man cry

Seagull carry me, over land and sea
To my own folk, that's where I want to be
    Every beat of my heart
    Tears me further apart
I'm lost and alone in the dark
    I'm going home

  • This song was originally recorded by Johnny Otis in 1952. Knight recorded it for local label Huntom Records, then had singles on 2 other labels sink without a trace, before having their fortunes change in a most unusual way. With Dave "Baby" Cortez, who had a #1 hit with "The Happy Organ" in 1959 playing on organ, they re-recorded this for Fury Records. As the new version, credited to "Gladys Knight & The Pips," started climbing the charts, Vee Jay Records bought the original from Huntom and issued it credited to "Pips." Eventually, the original Vee Jay single hit #6 as the newer Fury single stalled at #45.

  • A thumbscrew is a torture device. The Jesus Lizard frontman David Yow wrote this song about his landlord, who was giving him problems. In the song, Yow envisions torturing this guy:

    We will get the thumbscrews
And put him in his place
    Leave a great big hole
Where he used to keep his face

In our interview with Yow , he explained that the landlord started out "a really, really swell guy," but he quickly turned on him. "He went from being kind of a friend to an enemy," Yow said. "That song and 'Good Riddance,' which was also on the same record, were written about that guy."

You've Got to Hide Your Love Away Lyrics

Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
    If she's gone I can't go on
    Feelin' two-foot small

    Everywhere people stare
    Each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
    And I hear them say

Hey You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
Hey you've got to hide your love away
    How could I even try
    I can never win

    Hearing them, seeing them
    In the state I'm in
How could she say to me
    Love will find a way

    Gather round all you clowns
    Let me hear you say
Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away

  • Scratch Acid lead singer David Yow wrote this song when he was experiencing an acute form of heartache. It was so bad, he considered eating him self to cure the condition. "My girlfriend, Carla, who was just a sweet, wonderful, beautiful girl, had dumped me," he told us. "A few of the songs on that first Scratch Acid record are kind of about her and 'Cannibal' is one of them. I mean, after she dumped me, I just felt sick for so long. I had headaches, I had stomachaches. My heart was broken." (here's the full David Yow interview .)
  • This was the first track on the first Scratch Acid album. The group never had much commercial success, but was a favorite of Kurt Cobain and led to the band The Jesus Lizard, which was formed by two of its members, David Yow and David Sims.
