Inside Out Lyrics

Time's gone Inside Out
Time gets distorted with
This intense gravity
I don't got time for holy rollers
But then they wash my feet
And I won't be their soldier

There's intense gravity
Yeah, there's intense gravity
I'm just your satellite
I'm just your satellite

Ooh, and I know that time's gone inside out
And now it's only like we told you
Hm, oh then they wash my feet
They do not make me complete

Break out a character for me
Time keeps on going when
We got nothing else to give
We got nothing else to give

Ooh, 'cause our time's gone inside out
I don't make time for holy rollers
Hm, there's only you I need
They do not make me complete

Inside Out
  • This song was influenced by Dr Dre, whose album 2001 became stuck in frontman Britt Daniel's stereo. "To begin with it was just vocal and piano," he told NME. "Just a melancholy piano rhythm, but it didn't quite work. Just for fun we had Jim (Eno) play a Dre-like drum beat over it. Now it's my favorite track on the album."
  • The song's music video is based on the work of photographer Todd Baxter as we see various images morph into one another. Baxter created the artwork for the They Want My Soul album.
  • Britt Daniel recalled the story of this song to Uncut magazine: "We had a demo that was me singing on top of an eight-note toy piano - I was obsessed with Dr Dre, so this is our interpretation of him."

"I have this attraction to melancholy in music, the bitter longing in songs," he continued. "On 'Inside Out,' the chord changes alone evoke that."
  • Hunger TV asked Britt Daniel what Alex Fischel from Divine Fits, now playing with Spoon, brought to the sound of the band. Daniel explained: "First of all he's a really funny guy and fun dude to hang out with - he's kind of a wild man on stage - which I knew from playing with him in Divine Fits. But in terms of the record and sound - he can solo - so there are a few solos. You know that song 'Inside Out' has three solos in it? There's real instrumental vibes. I think that’s my favorite one. If Alex weren't in the band it would have had a totally different feel. The song started out with me playing eighth note piano - very, very basic - just piano and vocal and although that was really good it just wouldn't have been half or even a quarter as good as it has ended up being." Tenterfield Saddler Lyrics

The late George Wallno worked on High Street and lived on manners
52 years he sat on his verandah, made his saddles
And if you had questions about sheep or flowers or doves
You just asked the saddler, he lived without sin
They're building a library for him

    Time is a traveller
    Tenterfield Saddler
    Turn your head
Right again jackaroo, think I see kangaroo up ahead

The son of George Wallno went off and got married and had a war baby
But something was wrong and it's easier to drink than go crazy
And if there were questions about why the end was so sad
Well George had no answers about why her son ever has need of a gun

    Time is a traveller
    Tenterfield saddler
    Turn your head
Right again jackaroo, think I see kangaroo up ahead

The grandson of George has been all around the world and lives no special place
Changed his last name and he married a girl with an interesting face
He'd almost forgotten them both because of the life that he leads
There's nowhere for George and his library or the son with his gun to belong
    Except in this song

    Time is a traveller
    Tenterfield saddler
    Turn your head
Right again jackaroo, think I see kangaroo up ahead

    Time is a meddler
    Tenterfield Saddler
    Make a bet
    Fly away cockatoo
    Down on the ground
    Emu up ahead

    Time is a tale teller
    Tenterfield Saddler
    Turn your head
Right again jackaroo, think I see kangaroo up ahead

    Time is a tale teller
    Tenterfield Saddler
    Make a bet
    Fly away cockatoo
    Down on the ground
    Emu up ahead

    Tenterfield Saddler
  • "The late George Woolnough" is Peter's grandfather, who was the saddler in the Australian town of Tenterfield. He "worked on High Street, and lived on Manners", Manners being another street name. There is a library dedicated to him.
  • "The son of George Woolnough" - Peter's father - took to the bottle, and shot himself, inspiring the lines "something was wrong, and it's easier to drink than go crazy" and "George had no answers about why a son ever has need of a gun".
  • "The grandson of George" is Peter, who changed his name from Woolnough to Allen when he became part of "The Allen Brothers" with Chris Bell. He's "been all 'round the world and lives no special place", compared to a line from another song, "no matter how far or how wide I roam, I still call Australia home."
  • The "girl with an interesting face" is Liza Minnelli, who Allen married in 1967.

  • The first R&B act on the Top Dawg Entertainment roster, SZA earned the opportunity to open for Coldplay in 2013. So nervous was the New Jersey siren prior to the gig that she didn't sleep for two-and-a-half days beforehand.

The lyrics for this otherworldly track came to SZA after she'd guzzled several bottles of champagne that the band's frontman Chris Martin had given her after the show.

    The God That Failed Lyrics

    The God That Failed
  • This song is about how people seem to rely too much on religion to help with their problems. When James Hetfield's mother had cancer, she didn't take medication because she believed faith would heal her. Some time later, she died. (thanks, Joseph - LA, CA)
  • Producer Bob Rock told Musicradar.com : "The God That Failed is deep. It's not just a cheap shot at religion; it's him tackling the subject in a very complex manner. Emotionally, it's as real as 'Nothing Else Matters.'"
  • The Black Album was the first Metallica record produced by Rock, which meant he had to change some of the band's working practices, including that of guitarist Kirk Hammett on this song. He recalled to Musicradar.com: "Working with Kirk on this song was interesting – and this goes for the whole record, too: I was told that he'd come in the last few weeks of making a record to do his guitar solos. I told everybody right off, 'Well, that's not how we're going to do things. He's going to play live, like everybody else.'

At first, Kirk was very uncomfortable with this approach, but he was game and played what he thought were guide solos. In many cases, including this one, his first ideas were the ones that we'd go back to and use when doing overdubs. He learned how to be spontaneous."

  • Heartbreakers guitarist and Hypnotic Eye co-producer Mike Campbell told Uncut magazine about the song's Byrds-style jangle: "That was a leftover from the Wildflowers era that Tom found a demo for and brought in. It dates back quite a way, so maybe that's why it got some of that jangle in it," he said. "I thought it sounded more like AC/DC! But yeah, Tom and I play guitar a certain way and from 'American Girl' onward, we found a harmonic, drone-y sound, sometimes with open strings – I guess you'd call it a jangle."

"We love Roger McGuinn, among many other guitar players," Campbell added, "so I love that sound, and it's tended to creep in throughout our career."

    She Talks To Angels
  • During VH1's The Black Crowes Storytellers, filmed at The Bottom Line in New York City on August 27, 1996, lead singer Chris Robinson explained that this song is not about "one" person, but rather a "hot dog" (as he put it) of people that they knew from the Atlanta club scene in their early days. "Not all the best parts" explained Chris, "or the best parts for you." Chris says that there was always a girl in the club scene back then with really dark makeup (like Siouxsie And The Banshees), and after thinking about her one day, he scribbled the lyric "she paints her eyes as black as night." He then went on to write an entire biography (completely made up, by the way) about her in the form of the song that then became "She Talks to Angels." (thanks, Jacob - Dallas, TX)
  • In our interview with Chris Robinson , who wrote this song with his bandmate/brother Rich, he said: "'She Talks to Angels' is a funny song in that so many people resonate with it. The dark details like drugs and things like that would be a part of growing up and being in this world, but when I wrote that song I had no idea - I hadn't done any of those things. I hadn't lived that - everything was in my imagination."
  • The Christian band Third Day has a song about the Black Crowes that references this song and others. It's called "Black Bird" and imitates their style. The song says that Third Day really likes The Black Crowes music but that they essentially need Jesus in their lives. There is a lyric in "Black Bird" that says "You say to talk to angels, well I say it's such a lie." (thanks, Bob - Omaha, NE)

    Playing Dumb Lyrics

    Playing Dumb
  • Tom Petty takes aim here at the sex abuse scandal within the Catholic church and the controversial financial settlements they eventually made. "If I was in a club, and I found out that there had been generations of people abusing children, and then that club was covering that up, I would quit the club," he told Billboard magazine. "And I wouldn't give them any more money."

"I just felt that I was being asked to play dumb," Petty added, describing how the song emerged. "That, 'OK, well, they paid some money, so it's all over.' I don't trust that."

In case you're wondering about Petty's own religious background, he was raised as an unconvinced Southern Baptist.
  • The song was included as a bonus track on the vinyl release of Hypnotic Eye.
  • Other songs that reference child abuse within the Catholic church include:

"Devil In A Midnight Mass" by Billy Talent.

    "Religion" by Public Image Ltd.

"Take Off Your Shoes" by Sinead O'Connor.

    "Dear Father" by Black Sabbath.

    Scarlet Begonias Lyrics

As I was walkin' down rub-a-dub square
Not a chill to the window but a little to the air
From another direction she was calling my eye
It could be an illusion but I might as well try
    Might as well try

She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes
And I knew without asking she was into the blues
She wore Scarlet Begonias tucked into her curls
I knew right away she was not like other girls, like other girls

Well I ain't never been right as I ain't never been wrong
As everything works out the way it does in this song
Cause once in a while you get shown in the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right

It was the summer of love and I thank the stars above
Because the women took a lovin' over me
And just to gain her trust, I bought a microbus
Because I sold off all my personal property

A tie-tie-dyed dress, she was a psychedelic mess
We toured to the north, south, east and west
    We sold some mushroom tea,
    We sold some ecstasy,
We sold nitrous, opium, acid, heroin and PCP
And now I hear the police coming after me
Yes now I hear the police coming after me
The one scarlet with the flowers in her hair,
She's got the police coming after me

Well there ain't nothing wrong with the way she moves
All scarlet begonias and a touch of the blues
And there ain't nothin' wrong with the love that's in her eyes
I had to learn the hard way just to let her pass by, let her pass by.
Oh just let her pass by

    Scarlet Begonias
  • This is a cover a Grateful Dead song. It is from their 1974 album, Mars Hotel.
  • The lyrics make reference to several drugs including acid, heroin, PCP, nitrous, ecstasy, mushroom tea, and opium. Both Sublime and the Grateful Dead were closely associated with drugs.
  • Sublime lead singer Brad Nowell died in May 1996 from a heroin overdose.
  • The backbeat in this song was taken from "Funky Drummer" by James Brown. An enormous number of songs have used that sample.

    Angel in Blue Jeans Lyrics

And though I never got her name
Or time to find out anything
I loved her just the same
And though I rode a different road
    And sang a different song
I’ll love her till my last breaths gone
Like a river made of silver
Everyone came running to the scene
I was shot down in cold blood
By an Angel in Blue Jeans

Late that night she got away
I chased her to the turnpike
Then lost her where the music never plays
And though I rolled upon the stones and fell into the water
I’ll love her till my judgment day
Like a sunrise made of white lies
Everything was nothing as it seems
I was shot down in cold blood
By an angel in blue jeans

I hear voices calling all around
    I keep falling down
I think my heart could pound right out of me
I see a million different ways
To never leave this maze alive

I woke up in somebody’s arms
    Strange and so familiar
    Where nothing could go wrong
    Barely alive or nearly dead
Somehow awake in my own bed
    And there you are
Like a highway headed my way
    Life is but a dream
I was shot down by your love
My angel in blue jeans, oh

    Angel in Blue Jeans
  • The first single from Train's Bulletproof Picasso album finds Pat Monahan singing of falling in love at first sight with an "angel in blue jeans." Monahan penned the song with the New York-based Norwegian songwriting and music production team consisting of Espen Lind and Amund Bjørklund. The same trio also wrote Train's hit tunes "Hey Soul Sister" and "Drive By."
  • The song's Western-themed video features seasoned character actor Danny Trejo (Spy Kids, Machete) going against type by playing the good guy. (Monahan is the villain). New Girl's' Hannah Simone co-stars as the "angel in blue jeans." Monahan told Entertainment Tonight he thrived playing the baddie. "I think my face is really good at being a bad guy and it's great 'cause Danny, who usually is a bad guy, ends up being the hero, which is super cool," the vocalist said.
  • Trejo had to listen to the track around 50 times so he could lip syncs the words properly for the video. "I drove everybody crazy with it, but thank God everybody likes the song. Now everybody's singing it," he joked to ET. "This song is gonna be a hit, I'm telling you. Everybody's heard it. Low riders are all bumping it pretty loud!"
  • Monahan explained the song's meaning to Radio.com : "The song is literally about dreaming about trying to find that woman that did a magical thing to you and then you wake up from the dream at the end and you're laying next to her," he said. "And then you can relax."

(I don't know if you can, but can you get an order for Ons, that's O-N-S,
Junior Market, the address is 1934 East Anaheim, all the windows are
Busted out,... if he wants to)

    April 26th, 1992
There was a riot on the streets
    Tell me where were you?
You were sittin' home watchin' your TV
While I was participating in some anarchy
First spot we hit it was my liquor store
I finally got all that alcohol I can't afford
With red lights flashin', time to retire
And then we turned that liquor store into a structure fire
Next stop we hit, it was the music shop,
It only took one brick to make the window drop
Finally we got our own P.A.
Where do you think I got this guitar that you're hearing today?

(Call fire... respond Mobil station. Alamidos in Anaheim, it's uhh flaming up good)

When we returned to the pad to unload everything
It dawned on me that I need new home furnishings
So once again we filled the van until it was full
Since that day my livin' room's been much more comfortable
Cause everybody in the hood has had it up to here
It's getting harder, and harder, and harder each and every year
Some kids went in a store with their mother
I saw her when she came out she was gettin' some Pampers
They said it was for the black man
They said it was for the mexican
But not for the white man
But if you look at the streets, it wasn't about Rodney King
It's this fucked-up situation and these fucked-up police
It's about comin' up and stayin' on top
And screamin' 1-8-7 on a mother fuckin' cop
It's ain't in the paper, it's on the wall
    National guard
    Smoke from all around

  • This is about the riots that ensued after the Rodney King trial in Los Angeles, California. King was a black motorist who was beaten by four white police officers after they pulled him over. The incident was videotaped by someone who lived nearby and became a huge news story, dealing with issues of police brutality and race. The case went to trial in suburban Los Angeles, where the all-white jury acquitted the officers. Just hours after the verdict on April 29, 1992, riots broke out in the black sections of the city, prompting King's famous remark: "Can't we all just get along?"
  • In the lyrics, lead singer Brad Nowell says, "April 26, 1992" when referring to the date of the riots. This was a mistake - the date in the title is correct. (thanks, Curtis - Ottawa, Canada)
  • This contains samples of actual LAPD radio communications.
  • Miami is the first city mentioned in a long list of American cities where riots occurred. In the Doors song "Peace Frog," Jim Morrison did something similar when he named cities where the band ran into trouble with the law, including Miami.
  • This features samples from "La Di Da Di" by Doug E. Fresh featuring MC Ricky D, "Original Gangster of Hip-Hop" by Just Ice, and "Shook One (Part 1)" by Mobb Deep.
