You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch Lyrics

You're a mean one, Mr Grinch
You really are a heel
You're as cuddly as a cactus
You're as charming as an eel
Mr. Grinch!
You're a bad banana
With a greasy black peel!

You're a monster, Mr. Grinch!
Your heart's an empty hole
Your brain is full of spiders
You've got garlic in your soul
Mr. Grinch!
I wouldn't touch you
With a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole!

You're a vile one, Mr. Grinch!
You have termites in your smile
You have all the tender sweetness
Of a seasick crocodile
Mr. Grinch!
Given the choice between the two of you
I'd take the seasick crocodile!

You're a foul one, Mr. Grinch!
You're a nasty, wasty skunk!
Your heart is full of unwashed socks
Your soul is full of gunk
Mr. Grinch!
The three words that best describe you
Are as follows, and I quote
"Stink, stank, stunk!"

You're a rotter, Mr. Grinch!
You're the king of sinful sots!
Your heart's a dead tomato
Splotched with moldy, purple spots
Mr. Grinch!
Your soul is an apalling dump-heap
Overflowing with the most disgraceful
Assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable
Mangled-up in tangled-up knots!

You nauseate me, Mr. Grinch!
With a nauseous super naus!
You're a crooked jerky jockey
And you drive a crooked hoss
Mr. Grinch!
You're a three-decker sauerkraut
And toadstool sandwich
With arsenic sauce!

You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch
  • This was written and recorded for the classic 1966 Dr. Seuss TV Holiday Special How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Seuss wrote the lyrics and Albert Hague wrote the music. The song appears three times in the special, starting when The Grinch begins crafting his impostor Santa suit. Each time it plays, we hear more about the despicable green guy, who eventually grows a heart. The version played on radio is a combination of the three show uses.
  • Thurl was the voice of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes "Tony The Tiger," one of the most famous advertising icons ever created. Tony The Tiger's catch phrase is "They're Great." Ravenscroft died in 2005 at age 91. (thanks, Jeff - Boston, MA, for above 2)
  • How The Grinch Stole Christmas was a book before it was made into a movie. Warner Brothers legend Chuck Jones did the animation.
  • In the movie, The Grinch is voiced by Boris Karloff, a famous horror movie actor. This led many people to believe he recorded the song.
  • In 2000, Ron Howard directed a live-action version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey. In the movie, Carrey sings this with rapper Busta Rhymes.
  • This can be heard in the 1990 movie Home Alone in a scene where Macaulay Culkin has fallen asleep watching the TV special.

Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground Lyrics

If you had not have fallen
Then I would not have found you
Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground
And I patched up your broken wing and hung around a while
Trying to keep your spirits up and your fever down

I knew someday that you would fly away
For love's the greatest healer to be found
So leave me if you need to, I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground

Fly on, fly on past, the speed of sound
I'd rather see you up than see you down
So leave me if you need to, I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground.

So leave me if you need to, I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground.

Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground
  • Nelson wrote and performed this song for his starring role as a Country singer in the movie Honeysuckle Rose (1981).
  • The origins of this song are a little murky. Some fans assume the title angel refers to the Hells Angels biker Charlie Magoo, a friend of Nelson's who was killed, though the singer won't confirm or deny it. He has hinted that it's about his former wife Connie Koepke. (thanks, Kyle - Sparta, NJ)
  • During live performances, Nelson sometimes dedicates this song to his son Billy, the third child from his first marriage to Martha Matthews, who committed suicide in 1991.
  • This was Nelson's seventh chart-topping solo hit on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
  • Bob Dylan covered this song while recording his 1983 album Infidels.
  • Nelson recorded a live version of this song with Patty Griffin for his 2005 album Songs for Tsunami Relief: Austin to South Asia to aid the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.

    We've Only Just Begun Lyrics

We've Only Just Begun to live
    White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way
    (We've only begun)

Before the risin' sun, we fly
    So many roads to choose
We'll start out walkin' and learn to run
    And yes, we've just begun

Sharing horizons that are new to us
Watching the signs along the way
Talkin' it over, just the two of us
    Workin' together day to day
    Together
And when the evening comes, we smile
    So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow
    And yes, we've just begun

Sharing horizons that are new to us
Watching the signs along the way
Talkin' it over, just the two of us
    Workin' together day to day
    Together

    We've Only Just Begun
  • This started out as a bank commercial. Songwriters Paul Williams and Roger Nichols were commissioned by an advertising agency to write it in 1968 for Crocker Bank, which was trying to attract young people and newlyweds to their institution. (thanks, Brian - Funchal Madeira, Portugal)
  • Paul Williams told us: "'It had all the romantic beginnings of a bank commercial' is the way I describe it. There was actually a wonderful writer named Tony Asher who wrote for this ad agency, and he'd had a skiing accident and he broke his arm, so he couldn't write or play the piano or whatever. So he suggested Roger Nichols and I as replacements to write this ad. The ad agency called us and said, "Look, we're going to show a young couple getting married, driving off into the sunset, and it's going to say, 'You've got a long way to go, we'd like to help you get there to the Crocker Bank.'" And I went, Okay, what rhymes with Crocker? Crocker what? And they said very specifically, "No we don't want a jingle." What they asked for is what we would today call a music video. It was going to show a young couple getting married, driving off into the sunset. After the ceremony, the first kiss and all. So Roger and I wrote the song that would play over that.

We wrote the first two verses of 'We've Only Just Begun.' We wrote a second version of the commercial that was a verse, and what became the bridge. We added a third verse just in case anybody would ever want to record it. And then I assumed that it would never, ever get cut again. Richard (Carpenter), I guess, heard me singing it on the TV commercial, and called and asked if there was a complete song. And we went, 'Well, funny you should ask.' And if there hadn't been a complete song, we would have lied and said, 'Well, of course there is,' and then sat down and written it. You know, songwriting in those days was like that, too. I remember finishing songs in the back seat of a publisher's car on the way to play it for a producer. I retained my rights as a writer, and the publisher retained his rights as well."
  • Williams went on to write several more hits for the Carpenters, as well as songs for Barbra Streisand, Carole King and Three Dog Night. He also worked on many films as both a songwriter and an actor, composing the classics "Evergreen" from A Star Is Born and "Rainbow Connection" for The Muppet Movie. He attributes his songwriting success to authenticity, explaining: "When 'We've Only Just Begun' was a #1 record, I think the #1 album in the country was "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida." So it was as far away from what was happening in the music scene as you can get. And yet it was a hit. I think it was a hit because of, obviously, Karen [Carpenter]'s amazing vocal, but I think that any time we write authentically and honestly about what's going on in the center of our chest, because people are so much alike, there's a big a chance that it's going on in the center of your chest, too." (Check out our interview with Paul Williams.)
  • This song is very popular at weddings, as the lyrics describe a couple starting a new life together and living in harmony: "Talking it over, just the two of us, working together day by day." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Grandma Got Run Over Lyrics

Grandma Got Run Over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and grandpa we believe
She'd been drinking too much eggnog,
And we begged her not to go
    But she forgot her medication
and she staggered out the door into the snow
When we found her Christmas morning,
At the scene of the attack,
She had hoof-prints on her forehead,
And incriminating Claus marks on her back

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and grandpa we believe

Now we're all so proud of grandpa,
He's been taking this so well
See him in there watching football,
Drinking beer and playing cards with cousin Mel
    It's not Christmas without Grandma
All the family's dressed in black
And we just can't help but wonder
Should we open up her gifts,
Or send them back (send them back)

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and grandpa we believe

Now the goose is on the table
And the pudding made of fig
And the blue and silver candles
That would just have matched the hair on grandma's wig
I've warned all my friends and neighbors
    Better watch out for yourselves,
They should never give a license
To a man who drives a sleigh
    And plays with elves

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and grandpa we believe

    Singin' grandpa
Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve
You can say there's no such thing as Santa
But as for me and grandpa we believe
    Merry Christmas

    Grandma Got Run Over
  • This was recorded by the then husband-and-wife duo of Elmo Shropshire and Patsy Trigg, although Patsy does not sing or play an instrument on this song. It was released in 1979 in the San Francisco area where they lived, and each year more and more radio stations picked up on this holiday novelty classic, and by 1984 the song hit the national chart. Unfortunately, a year later Elmo and Patsy divorced. (thanks, Jeff - Boston, MA)
  • This was made into a TV special of the same name in 2000. After Grandma disappears on Christmas Eve, it's up to her grandson to find out what happened to her, prove Santa is real, and keep an evil family member from claiming her stuff. We won't tell you how it ends, but you'll be happy to know that it is available on DVD.
  • This was written by Randy Brooks, author of several other catchy novelty songs including "I'd Rather Be Sailin' with Governor Palin" and "It's Halloween (A Christmas Song)." Brooks played this while sitting in with Elmo and Patsy at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe in December 1978. After the show they asked him for a taped copy. Elmo and Patsy recorded their own version a year later and began selling it at their shows. A friend brought it to the attention of Gene Nelson of KSFO San Francisco. (thanks, Ekristheh - Halath, United States)
  • Dr. Elmo (a veterinarian) does more radio and TV interviews each holiday season than just about anyone - in 2005 he was on 11 TV shows in major markets, and did 150 radio interviews, most of which were syndicated to reach 3500 markets. Each morning during the holiday season, he starts his interviews at 4:30 - 5:00 AM (West Coast) and does an interview every 15 minutes until about 11:00 AM. Then he gets ready for his TV appearances, concert or personal appearances.
  • In 2005, this song sold on 200,000 CDs in retail stores, was downloaded over 100,000 times as a ringtone, and sold 40,000 downloads through Sony and 6,000 on iTunes.
  • There have been millions of plush reindeer toys sold at major retailers that sing Elmo's version of this song. It's the #1 plush toy sold during the holidays.
  • There was a "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" animation that played on the WB channel each year, several times, in prime time. Elmo wrote the 5 songs that are in this animation. He also narrates it and plays the part of Grandpa.
  • Elmo, who turned 70 in 2006, ran his first marathon (New York) in 2005. (thanks, Kathy - San Francisco, CA)
  • A group of high school students from South Mississippi recorded "Downtown Got Run Over By Katrina," which is a parody of the after-shocks that Gulf Coast residents felt following Hurricane Katrina in late 2005. The song created quite an interest during Christmas shopping season on the Mississippi/Louisiana Coast. Elmo gave them permission to use his tune. (thanks, Robby - Pascagoula, MS)

    Donde Esta Santa Claus Lyrics

    Mamacita, Donde Esta Santa Claus?
    Donde esta Santa Claus?
And the toys that he will leave.
Mamacita, oh, where is Santa Claus?
I look for him because it's a Christmas Eve.

I know that I should be sleeping,
But maybe he's not far away,
Out of the window I'm peeping,
Hoping to see him in his sleigh.

I hope he won't forget to clack his castinet,
    And to his reindeer, say,
"Oh Pancho, Oh! Vixen, Oh! Pedro, Oh! Blitzen,"
Ole! Ole! Ole! cha cha cha.

    Mamacita, donde esta Santa Claus?
    Oh! Where is Santa Claus?
    It's Christmas Eve.

    Mamacita, donde esta Santa Claus?
I look for him because it's Christmas Eve.

I know that I should be sleeping,
But maybe he's not far away,
Out of the window I'm peeping,
Hoping to see him in sleigh.

I hope he won't forget to crack his castinet,
    And to his reindeer, say,
"Oh Pancho, Oh! Vixen, Oh! Pedro, Oh! Blitzen,"
Ole! Ole! Ole! cha cha cha.

    Mamacita, donde esta Santa Claus?
    Oh! Where is Santa Claus?
    It's Christmas Eve.

    It's Christmas Eve.

    All right you Chipmunks
    Ready to sing your song
    I'll say we are, yeah
    Let's sing it now
    Okay, Simon?
    Okay
    Okay, Theodore?
    Okay
    Okay, Alvin? Alvin? Alvin
    Okay

    Christmas, Christmas time is near
Time for toys and time for cheer
We've been good but we can't last
    Hurry Christmas, hurry fast
Want a plane that loops the loop
Me, I want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
    Please Christmas, don't be late

    Okay fellas, get ready
    That was very good, Simon
    Naturally
    Very good Theodore
Ah, Alvin, you were a little flat, watch it
    Ah, Alvin, Alvin, Alvin
    Okay

Want a plane that loops the loop
I still want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
    Please Christmas, don't be late
We can hardly stand the wait
    Please Christmas, don't be late

    Very good, boys
Let's sing it again, yeah, lets sing it again
No, That's enough, lets not overdo it
What do you mean overdo it?
We want to sing it again
    Now wait a minute, boys
Why can't we sing it again?
Alvin, cut that out Theodore, just a minute
Simon will you cut that out, boys

    The Chipmunk Song
  • This was written and produced by Ross Bagdasarian (a.k.a. David Seville). The inspiration came to him from his youngest son, Adam, who had a habit of asking in September if it was Christmas yet. He figured if his son was already asking about the holiday so early, other kids probably were too.
  • The song went through three versions before Bagdasarian's family gave it the OK. The first version was an instrumental, the third was titled "In A Village Park," and the third and winner was "The Chipmunk Song." Bagdasarian came up with the idea for a trio of singing chipmunks after seeing one of those creatures on the road, refusing to move for his car.
  • Within three weeks of being released the song had sold over 2.5 million copies, making it the fastest-selling record of 1958. It hit #1 on December 22, 1958, and stayed there for four weeks. This is the last Christmas song to hit #1 in the US. (thanks, Jeff - Boston, MA, for above 3)
  • The Chipmunks were called Alvin, Simon and Theodore. They were named after Liberty Records president Al Bennett, owner Si Warnoker and the engineer on duty when it was recorded, Ted Keep.
  • This was the first Chipmunks single, although David Seville had previously recorded two singles using his pitched-up voice technique. The first was "Witch Doctor," which went to #1 US in April 1958. On that song, the chirpy voice represented the witch doctor, not a rodent. When Seville expanded the act he came up with the Chipmunks concept, creating three distinct characters, each with their own voices. "The Chipmunk Song" was their first single, and it set the stage for Chipmunk domination, which would later include TV series and movies.
  • The Chipmunks were very popular for the next few years; "Alvin's Harmonica" went to #3 in 1959, and the rodents got their on cartoon series - The Alvin Show - which ran from 1961-1962. They had some success with a 1964 album of Beatles covers, but by the end of the decade, it seemed that fad had passed.

Seville died of a heart attack in 1972, and in 1979, his son Ross Bagdasarian Jr. assumed control of The Chipmunks, doing the voices of David Seville, Alvin, and Simon, while Ross Jr's wife Janice Klarman did the voice for Theodore. In 1983, they got another TV series, Alvin and the Chipmunks, which ran until 1990. In the '00s, there was another Chipmunk resurgence, with a series of movies and some novelty cover songs that placed on the Hot 100 (their version of "Bad Day" made #67; "Funkytown" went to #86). In 2015 they got yet another TV series, this one called ALVINNN!!! and the Chipmunks.
  • Like many hit Christmas songs, this returned to the charts several times around the holiday season. Here are the chart placings on the Hot 100:

    1959, #41
    1960, #45
    1961, #39
    1962, #40

A new version of the song reached #66 in 2007, thanks to the box office success of the film Alvin And The Chipmunks.
  • This won three Grammy Awards: Best Comedy Performance, Best Recording For Children, and Best Engineered Record - Non-Classical (this one went to engineer Ted Keep, the namesake for Theodore).
  • Random trivia: Ross Bagdasarian can be seen playing the piano as a struggling composer in the Alfred Hitchcock movie classic Rear Window starring Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly. (thanks, Terry - Willmar, MN)

    Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo
  • Also known as "The Magic Song," this novelty number was penned by Al Hoffman, Mack David and Jerry Livingston for Disney's 1950 animated fairy tale Cinderella. The Fontane Sisters appeared on Perry Como's self-titled variety show dressed as mice and previewed a medley of songs from the film along with actress Ilene Woods, who played Cinderella. Como recorded "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" with the trio of New Jersey sisters with the film's "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" on the flip side.
  • In Cinderella, the Fairy Godmother (Verna Felton) performs this song as she transforms the title servant girl into an elegant princess for the royal ball. Felton was a popular character actress who loaned her voice to several other Disney films (she was Dumbo's mother, Flora the good fairy in Sleeping Beauty and the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, to name a few). She also appeared on I Love Lucy as Mrs. Porter, the tough-as-nails maid in "Lucy Hires a Maid" and gruff neighbor Mrs. Simpson in "Sales Resistance."
  • Pop singer Jo Stafford and actor/singer Gordon MacRae recorded this song just two months after Como in 1949. Their version peaked at #19 on the Billboard charts.
  • In Shrek 2 (2004), Fiona's Fairy Godmother, voiced by Absolutely Fabulous actress Jennifer Saunders, parodies this song.

    Macarena
  • This was originally released on a local label in Spain in 1993, where it did fairly well. The next year, the American label BMG bought the Spanish label and set out to make "Macarena" a hit in America. They marketed an English language version to dance clubs and cruise ships, then released it as a single in 1995. It was a minor hit until the summer of 1996, when the Macarena dance craze hit America. The song went to #1 in July and stayed there for 14 weeks.
  • Los Del Rio (Antonio Romeo Monge and Rafael Ruiz) are a Spanish flamenco-pop duo. They were inspired to record this on a trip to Venezuela when they spotted a beautiful flamenco dancer named Diana Patricia. When the song became a hit, she became known in Venezuela as "Macarena."
  • This was the first hit for Los Del Rio since 1962 and their only hit in the US.
  • "La Macarena" is one of 8 sections (known as "quarters") of Seville, Spain. That's where they got the name.
  • Macarena is a female name which means "Mother of God."
  • The song has been remixed many times. The US single was a remix by a Miami-based production team called The Bayside Boys. As with any good dance song sensation (like "The Twist"), it also spawned spin-offs. Here's a breakdown of the "Macarena"s that charted in America:

Bayside Boys mix (#45 in 1995)
Los Del Rio (the re-release, which went to #1 in 1996)
Los Del Rio [non stop] (#23 in 1996)
Los Del Mar (#71 in 1996 - "Mar" means "sea" in Spanish, while "Rio" is "river")
    GrooveGrass Boyz (#107 in 1997 )
"Macarena Christmas" by Los Del Rio (#57 in 1996)
  • This became a hit in Europe and Latin America in 1995 when it was released on a compilation CD called Macarena Club Cutz.
  • The meaning of the song changes depending on what mix you are listening to. In the original version, Macarena is upset because her boyfriend, Vitorino, has joined the army. She retaliates by going out on the town and carousing with other men. In the Bayside Boys mix, Macarena gets mad at her boyfriend and goes out to shake it while he's out of town. In this version, she seems to be more promiscuous. The Bayside Boys also made it a first person account, with the lyrics being the voice of Macarena.
  • This song stayed in the US Top 100 for 60 weeks, the one-time record for the longest run on the singles chart. In 1998 it was overtaken by LeAnn Rimes' How Do I Live, which spent 69 weeks in total in the Hot 100. The song's 33-week climb (over two separate chart runs) to the #1 position established the record for the longest journey to the Hot 100's summit.
  • Los Del Rio is named after the Virgin of Seville, the "Virgin Del Rocio" (Virgin of the Dew), which is equivalent to the Virgin Mary. The members of the group, who don't speak English, were convinced it was a gift of the "Virgin Del Rocio" when this became an international hit.
  • The chorus translates to English as: "Give your body joy, Macarena, that your body is to give joy and good things."
  • In the US, this was the biggest dance craze of the 1990's. It was played at weddings, office parties, cruise ships, and just about anywhere there was dancing. Like the earlier dance craze, the "Electric Slide," it was easy to learn and was done in a group, making it perfect for Americans who lacked rhythm.
  • The world record for the most people performing one dance at the same time was set by 50,000 people in Yankee stadium while dancing the "Macarena."
  • The Bayside Boys Mix version samples seven seconds in the laughter of Yazoo vocalist Alison Moyet. It was taken from Yazoo's 1982 single "Situation."

Doctors have come from distants cities, just to see me
Stand over my bed, disbelieving what they're seeing

1-They say I must be one of the wonders
    Of God's own creation
And as far as they see, they can offer
    No explanation

Newspapers ask intimate questions, want confessions
They reach into my head to steal, the glory of my story
    (repeat 1)

Ooo, I believe, fate, fate smiled
And destiny laughed as she came to my cradle
Know this child will be able
Laughed as my body she lifted
Know this child will be gifted
With love, with patience, and with faith
She'll make her way, she'll make her way

People see me I'm a challenge to your balance
I'm over your heads how I confound you
    And astound you
To know I must be one of the wonders
    (rpt...1)

Ooo, I believe, fate, fate smiled
And destiny laughed as she came to my cradle
Know this child will be able
Laughed as she came to my mother
Know this child will not suffer
Laughed as my body she lifted
Know this child will be gifted
With love, with patience and with faith
She'll make her way, she'll make her way

  • When she was a teenager, Natalie worked at a day camp for special needs children, many of whom had been institutionalized since infancy and abandoned by their parents. She mentioned that they seemed to have developed their own language to communicate with each other, especially the deaf and blind kids.

She wrote "Wonder" about one girl born with seemingly insurmountable physical handicaps who handled them with a great deal of personal grace. This girl was able to do this despite the odds, thanks to a loving and caring adoptive family. (thanks, Terry - Colchester, VT)
  • Natalie Merchant performed this song, along with "Carnival," on an episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by David Schwimmer in 1995.

One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
Two can be as bad as one
It's the loneliest number since the number one

No is the saddest experience you'll ever know
Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know

'Cause one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
One is the loneliest number, whoa-oh, worse than two

It's just no good anymore since you went away
Now I spend my time just making rhymes of yesterday

    One is the loneliest number
    One is the loneliest number
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do

    One is the loneliest
    One is the loneliest
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do

It's just no good anymore since you went away

  • This was written by Harry Nilsson, a popular songwriter who had hits as a singer with "Everybody's Talkin'" and "Without You." Nilsson was inspired to write "One" from the rhythm of a telephone busy signal that he kept hearing.
  • This is about loneliness. It was used in the film Recess: School's Out when the character of TJ is lonely and bored after all his friends go to summer camps. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • This was the first song on Three Dog Night's first album. It was one of 21 US Top 40 hits for the group, who did very well with songs written by other artists. Other hits by Three Dog Night include "Joy to the World" (written by Hoyt Axton), "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" (written by Randy Newman) and "The Show Must Go On" (written by Leo Sayer).
  • Aimee Mann covered this for the 1999 film Magnolia. It was used in the title sequence, and became part of a soundtrack that put Mann back in the spotlight. In the '80s, she was lead singer of the group Til Tuesday.
  • Three Dog Night had three members at the time that were capable of singing lead vocals. This track went to Chuck Negron.
  • In Episode 6, "Mistaken Identity" of Season 1 of the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Will and Carlton are locked in with a criminal who sings this song at the end of the show. (thanks, Stephen - Cupertino, CA)

I Will Be Here For You Lyrics

    When you feel the sunlight
    Fade into the cold night
    Don't know where to turn
I don't know where to turn
And all the dreams you're dreaming
    Seem to lose their meaning
    Let me in your world
Baby, let me in your world
All you need is someone you can hold
Don't be sad, you're not alone

I Will Be Here For You
    Somewhere in the night
    Somewhere in the night
I'll shine a light for you
    Somewhere in the night
    I'll be standing by
I will be here for you

    In this world of strangers
    Of cold and friendly faces
    Someone you can trust
Oh there's someone you can trust
    I will be your shelter
    I'll give you my shoulder
Just reach out for my love
    Reach out for my love
Call my name and my heart will hear
I will be there, there's nothing to fear

I will be here for you
    Somewhere in the night
    Somewhere in the night
I'll shine a light for you
    Somewhere in the night
    I'll be standing by
I will be here for you

I will be here for you
    Somewhere in the night
    Somewhere in the night
I'll shine a light for you
    Somewhere in the night
    I'll be standing by

I will be here for you
    Somewhere in the night

I Will Be Here For You
  • Michael W. Smith wrote this song with hitmaking songwriter Diane Warren. Released as a single from Smith's Change The World album it topped the Adult Contemporary chart for two weeks and also reached #27 on the Hot 100.
  • Warren doesn't do many co-writes, so Smith was very grateful for the opportunity to pen a song with the hitmaker. He told us how the collaboration came about. "I was on Geffen Records then, and John Coladnor, our guy there, set that whole thing up," he said. "And we seemed to hit it off and I got pretty comfortable pretty quick.

"But, obviously, yeah, you're around this girl who's written all these great hit songs. And we got in the studio and I started coming up with this piano melody and all of a sudden we had a song. And little did I know that it ended being a #1 AC pop song."

It's Still Rock And Roll To Me Lyrics

What's the matter with the clothes I'm wearing?
"Can't you tell that your tie's too wide? "
Maybe I should buy some old tab collars?
"Welcome back to the age of jive.
Where have you been hidin' out lately, honey?
You can't dress trashy till you spend a lot of money."
Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound
Funny, but It's Still Rock And Roll To Me

What's the matter with the car I'm driving?
"Can't you tell that it's out of style? "
Should I get a set of white wall tires?
"Are you gonna cruise the miracle mile?
Nowadays you can't be too sentimental
Your best bet's a true baby blue Continental."
Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk
It's still rock and roll to me

Oh, it doesn't matter what they say in the papers
'Cause it's always been the same old scene.
There's a new band in town
But you can't get the sound from a story in a magazine
    Aimed at your average teen

How about a pair of pink sidewinders
And a bright orange pair of pants?
"You could really be a Beau Brummel baby
If you just give it half a chance.
Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers,
You get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers."
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways
It's still rock and roll to me

What's the matter with the crowd I'm seeing?
"Don't you know that they're out of touch? "
Should I try to be a straight 'A' student?
"If you are then you think too much.
Don't you know about the new fashion honey?
All you need are looks and a whole lotta money."
It's the next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways
It's still rock and roll to me

Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound
Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me

It's Still Rock And Roll To Me
  • In this song, Billy Joel was making a comment on musical styles and trends. At the end of the Disco era, the music press began touting the "New Wave" sound, which included bands like The Police and The Cars. Joel thought that this new sound was just a variation on Power-Pop that had been around since the '60s. He didn't have a problem with music, just the way it was being categorized. "I like it, but it's not particularly new," he said.
  • Around this time, Joel was often abased in the music press as a provider of middle-of-the-road dreck. Popular artists are often targets for journalist derision, but while most of these artists choose to ignore it, Joel responded in this song. The lines, "It doesn't matter what they say in the papers, 'cause it's always been the same old scene." and "There's a new band in town, but you can't get the sound from a story in a magazine," were specifically written to attack the press that was bringing him down by pointing out that the only way to know what a band sound like is to listen to it.

"Sometimes the press gave me a hard time, and liked giving them a hard time back," Joel told Howard Stern in 2014. "In my neighborhood, somebody hits you, you hit them right back."
  • One of Joel's most popular songs, this was his first #1 hit on the Hot 100, spending two weeks at the top spot in July, 1980. The single was certified Platinum, which at the time meant sales in excess of 2 million.

Joel would score two more #1 hits in America: "Tell Her About It" and "We Didn't Start The Fire."
  • "Miracle Mile," as mentioned in the line "Should I get a set of white wall tires? Are you gonna cruise a miracle mile?" is a stretch of road (about a mile long) full of various stores in Manhasset, Long Island near where Joel grew up. (thanks, Nicole - Garden City, NY)
  • After he wrote this song, Joel says he realized that the chords were the same ones Bob Dylan used on "Lay Lady Lay."
