Appreciate
  • Paul McCartney cut this track with Giles Martin (son of Beatles producer George Martin) for his New album. The former Beatle recorded tracks for the record with several producers working in a number of locations ranging from New York to London's Abbey Road and his home studio in Sussex. After a while, he became concerned how the eclectic results would fit together. "I thought, 'Uh-oh, it's not a rock album, and it's not an acoustic album,'" he told Billboard magazine. "And then I thought back to the Beatles albums: There would be something like 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road?' right next to 'Blackbird' or 'Something' right next to 'She's So Heavy.' I mean, we really ran the changes! This has turned out a little bit like that. The continuing thing throughout that pulls it all together, I think, is the fact that it's me."
  • The song's music video is a collaboration with Newman, the robot, who was designed by Mervyn Millar and Ed Dimbleby for Significant Object Ltd. Speaking about Newman, McCartney said: "I woke up one morning with an image in my head of me standing with a large robot. I thought it might be something that could be used for the cover of my album New but instead the idea turned out to be for my music video for 'Appreciate.' Together with the people who had done the puppetry for the worldwide hit War Horse we developed the robot who became Newman."

Album: Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron
    Released: 1966

Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron Lyrics

    Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron
  • This is a novelty song about the imaginary World War I antics of Charlie Brown's pet beagle in the comic strip Peanuts. It spawned three sequels: "The Return of the Red Baron," "Snoopy's Christmas," and "Snoopy for President." Of the three, "The Return of the Red Baron" is the only one that hit the Hot 100 (#15), but "Snoopy's Christmas" became a seasonal favorite. Learn more about Snoopy and the real Red Baron in the Song Images .
  • There really was a Red Baron. His name was Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (Baron Von Richthofen), and just like the lyrics state, he had 80 confirmed kills as a fighter pilot in World War I. In the song, he meets his demise when Snoopy shoots him down in a dogfight, but in real life, he died when his plane crashed in France.
  • The German muttering as the beginning roughly translates to: "We will now sing together the song of a pig-headed dog, and our beloved Red Baron."

The band's singer Chris Nunley came up with this part and did the vocal. He was studying German in college at the time.
  • Like all of the band's Snoopy songs, this was written by their producer Phil Gernhard and Laurie Records staff songwriter Dick Holler.
  • Originally known as The Posmen, The Royal Guardsmen formed in Ocala, Florida, where they earned a deal with Laurie Records after developing a live following in the area.

    The band was comprised of:
    Barry Winslow (vocals, guitar)
    Chris Nunley (vocals)
    Tom Richards (guitar)
    Bill Balough (bass)
    Billy Taylor (organ)
    John Burdett (drums)

The "Royal Guardsmen" name came from a model of amplifier made by Vox called the Royal Guardsman. They took the name because it sounded British, which gave them the illusion of being part of the British Invasion.
  • In 1975 Charles Schultz told author David Manning White, "We threatened to put a stop to (the record) until we were included in the success." The band never met Snoopy's creator, though Chris says, "We heard through our label (Laurie) and producer that Charles Schultz liked our songs."
  • This song went to #2 US the last week of 1966. It was held out of the top spot by The Monkees song "I'm A Believer."
  • The Royal Guardsmen didn't set out to become Snoopy troubadours. Their first single was "Baby Let's Wait" (written by Lori Burton and Pam Sawyer), but it went nowhere. When this song became an unexpected breakout hit, further Snoopy songs followed - made possible in part because while the Red Baron is shot down at the end of this song, we never see the crash.

The band did have some minor hits with non-Snoopy material. "Airplane Song (My Airplane)" (#46) and "Wednesday" (#97) charted in 1967. The following year, "I Say Love," written by band members Bill Taylor Barry Winslow, made #72. "Baby Let's Wait" became their last Hot 100 hit when it was re-released and made #35.
  • Lead vocals on this and the other Snoopy songs were done by Barry Winslow, who played guitar in the group. This put their singer Chris Nunley in the position of gamely acting out the songs ("look... up in the sky...") during performances. Winslow told us, "I really wanted to split the chores with Chris, but the
    label said no."
  • This was a huge hit in Australia, where it went to #1 for five weeks in 1967. The last two weeks of that year, "Snoopy's Christmas" was the #1 song in that country.
  • The Royal Guardsmen reunited in 2005 to play some gigs. The following year, they released "Snoopy vs. Osama," which finds the cartoon beagle hunting down Osama bin Laden.

Barry Winslow became a Contemporary Christian artist, releasing an album called Transition in 2003.
  • In case they ran into copyright issues, the group recorded another version of this song called Squeaky vs. the Black Knight . It was never released, but promotional copies have appeared.

    Pray for Peace
  • Reba explained the background to this song. "Every time I watch the news, I'm just waiting for a story with a happy ending," she said. "Unfortunately you don't see those stories very often. I find myself praying for peace, and a better outcome for the world. 'Pray for Peace' is a song I wrote because I strongly believe in the power of prayer."
  • The idea for the song originally came to McEntire in 2013 as she was walking on her place in Gallatin, Tennessee. "For days I'd sing, 'Pray for Peace,' over and over," she said. "It wasn't until several months later did the other parts start to fall in place. Some, not until we got into the studio to record it."

"I feel this song is a gift from God," McEntire added. "I have never worked on a song as long as this one. It went from a bass drum, fiddle and singers to guest artist singing with me, adding more instruments and even a choir and a bagpipe!"

"It's an act of perseverance, prayer, hope, fellowship and mostly love," she concluded.
  • According to the singer's friend and fellow Country star Ronnie Dunn, McEntire released the video online via Facebook because "no record label knew what to do with it."
  • The song's music video features over 50 fan submission videos, as well as appearances by Kelly Clarkson, Ronnie Dunn and Caroline Kole.

After the clip's release, various celebrities including Amy Grant, Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman and The Band Perry posted their own "Pray for Peace" visuals in support of McEntire's message.
  • The lyrics were divinely inspired. "My front yard is my church. That's where I talk to God and pray, and I walk and look at the beautiful things He's created, McEntire told Taste of Country . "And so 'Pray for Peace' came to my mind. So I started praying for peace. A lot of things were going on at the time around the world that were really disturbing."

"Then a month or two later, I asked, 'Lord, what do you have in mind for me? What's my next project?'" she added. "And then He said, 'Why don't you pray for peace?' And that thought came to my mind, and I said, 'I've been doing that.' So I kept praying for peace. Then later, I kept thinking, 'Pray for peace, pray for peace.' Then a month or two later, He told me I should record it."

    Do It Again Lyrics

In the mornin' you go gunnin' for the man who stole your water
And you fire till he is done in but they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singin' as they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hangin' and they put you on the street

You go back, Jack, Do It Again, wheels turinin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again

When you know she's no high climber then you find your only friend
In a room with your two timer, and you're sure you're near the end
Then you love a little wild one, and she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smilin'; you'll be on your knees tomorrow

You go back, Jack, do it again, wheels turinin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again

    Now you swear and kick and beg us that you're not a gamblin' man;
Then you find you're back in Vegas with a handle in your hand
Your black cards can make you money so you hide them when you're able
In the land of milk and honey you must put them on the table

You go back, Jack, do it again, wheels turinin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again

    Do It Again
  • This was the breakout hit from Steely Dan's first album. Like many of their songs, it's hard to make sense of the lyrics, which seem to be about some combination of addiction, second chances and the inevitability of fate. It's an example of a Steely Dan song that doesn't make literal sense, but creates a mood.
  • The instrument used on the first instrumental break is an electric sitar, which was played by Steely Dan mainstay Denny Dias (who later became a computer programmer). This is followed by an organ solo, which was played by Donald Fagen. This was described in the album liner notes as "an inexpensive, imported plastic organ (an instrument which long ago fell into disuse in most rock circles)." This was later revealed to be a Yamaha YC-30 with something called a portamento ribbon, which could create the slide effect.
  • This was Steely Dan's first single. It became a hit in both the US and UK, earning the group a lot of press coverage. The group's sound was very unusual, and when asked to explain it, they sometimes described it as "smart rock."
  • In 1983, an Italian act called Club House released a mash-up of this song with Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," which was released as "Do It Again (Medley With Billie Jean)." It made #75 US and #11 UK.
  • On the original release of Can't Buy A Thrill, this song is credited as "Trad" (meaning "traditional," like many folk songs) in the album credits. This is a fairly typical Donald Fagen/Walter Becker prank. (thanks, Michael - Somerville, MA)
  • Waylon Jennings, Falco, Tori Amos and Smash Mouth have all covered this song.

    16 Shades of Blue Lyrics

Are you telling me it's over disintegrating lost and there's nothing I can do
Before you drop another verbal bomb, can I arm myself
With Cezanne's 16 Shades of Blue

As my heart is slowly ripping into pieces
Disconnecting from the circuits of my mind
You'll get over it you say in time
    In time?
If the clocks are black absorbing everything but
A remembering how we made it that
    Clocks are black

You say get over it if 50 is the new black,
hooray this could be your lucky day
But my cables they are surging almost
    overloading as you disengage

Could your heart be slowly ripping into pieces
Disconnecting from the circuits of your mind
We'll get over it you say in time
    In time?
If the clocks are black absorbing everything but
A remembering how we made it that
    Clocks are black

    That's it you're done.
    You've screwed up your life
    Before it's begun
    There are those who say
I am now too old to play

See over there at 33 she fears she'll lose her job
Because they hear the ticking of her clock
At only 15 I said 15, they say her future's bleak
She should have started this at 3

As her heart is slowly ripping into pieces
Disconnecting from the circuits of her mind
She'll get over it you say in time
    In time? Stop Father Time
If the clocks are black absorbing everything but
A remembering how we made it that
    How our clocks are black

Before you drop another verbal bomb
    Can I arm myself

    16 Shades of Blue
  • This electronically assisted song is a meditation on aging. "I turned 50 this year – and certain people really helped me to see it in a different way and grab it with both hands," said Amos. "The song '16 Shades of Blue' talks about aging from many points of view. And as I started to dive into it, I started to learn from women of all ages that age was a difficult thing for them – whether you're talking to a 15-year-old who feels pressure to choose their career path for life or a 33-year-old who fears she won't get the promotion if it is known that she is planning a family. They all felt the pressures in the aging process."
  • A lifelong art lover, it was the work of French post-impressionist painter Paul Cezanne that inspired the song title. "I discovered Cezanne this past year," said Amos. "And I just never got it before. All my life I have been going to art and artists to hear. One day I was looking through a book and I started hearing when I stumbled upon Cezanne's The Black Clock. He was known to have at least 16 Shades of Blue as part of his color palette."
  • Amos told The Irish Times the story of the song. "Rhythms and music started happening in my head," she said. "Then I began reading that Rilke would say that he [Cezanne] would paint in at least 16 shades of blue at times. All of sudden, it just came together: a story about age, and what it means to turn different ages at different times."

"I was hearing from women about their different struggles with age, and quite frankly I wasn’t prepared for it," Amos added. "So as I was staring 50 straight in the eye, that then became the song."

    Black Rock Lyrics

On the Black Rock is where I spend my time
Writing a memory or writing a rhyme
Thinking about what is right or wrong
On the black rock is where I like to go
After a long night comin' home from the show
That's where I write my song all day long
    The black rock
    Sometimes, I just look around
Taking the feeling coming out from the ground
That's just something I do sometimes
And then I just come out the door
Taking the wind coming off of the shore
And that's just what I'm doing tonight
On the black rock is where I spend my time
Writing a memory or writing a rhyme
Thinking about what is right or wrong
On the black rock is where I like to go
After a long night comin' home from the show
That's where I write my song all day long
    The black rock
When you are on your own
Not speaking out is like fighting alone
And that is the worst damn way to fight
And when you are scared no more
You reach your hand out and just open the door
And that's just what I'm doing tonight
On the black rock is where I spend my time
Writing a memory or writing a rhyme
Thinking about what is right or wrong
On the black rock is where I like to go

So can these shoes take me to

    A vulnerable earth

And I can almost out run you

    Did I somehow become you

And there are forces of conflict
    Taking portions of my mind

    The fragments I must find

"Experiences stay with you. And you have to find a way to create with them. Or the voices in your head can intimidate you. Can make you doubt yourself. Self-doubt can be a harmful bully."

  • In this song, Ozzy ridicules televangelist (and longtime foe) Jimmy Swaggart, referring to him as "Jimmy Sinner."

The song was written by Osbourne, his guitarist Zakk Wylde, and his bass player Bob Daisley . Daisley, who wrote the lyric, originally mentioned Swaggart by name, but decided it would be more effective to keep it nonspecific.
  • In 1985, after a teenager killed himself while listening to Ozzy's song "Suicide Solution," Swaggart went on a crusade against rock music and took every opportunity to point out Osbourne's depravity. Ozzy got the last laugh in 1987 when Swaggart was caught with a prostitute and admitted an addiction to pornography. Swaggart became known as one of the biggest hypocrites ever to walk the earth, while Ozzy got his own TV show.
  • Ozzy used an English church as his stage to skewer Swaggart in the music video, but events took an unexpected turn when some of his guests befouled the chapel. "When the music went on, the pigs all took a massive s--t at the same time," he remembered. "Because it was so f---ing loud in there. My wife went, 'Oh, f---!' The playback started and they all went pfffffftttt! Sixty pigs s--tting! I had a pair of brand-new suede boots on, and I never wore them again. I couldn't get the f---ing smell of pig s--t out of them."

But every time I look at you I just don't care
'Cause all I wanna be, yeah all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah
Is somebody to you (yeah you!)

    I used to ride around
    I didn't wanna settle down
But now I wake each day
Looking for a way that I can see your face (Yeah you!)
    I've got your photograph
But baby I need more than that
I need to know your lips
Nothing ever mattered to me more than this (Yeah you!)

  • The Vamps teamed up with the US singer Demi Lovato for a new single version, which was played for the first time on Capital FM on May 18, 2014. Asked by MTV UK how the collaboration came about, Connor replied: "We were just working with the same producers as her and she came in and did her parts the week after we recorded which was very lovely of her."

Bradley added: "We always knew we wanted a feature on that song and Demi nailed it."
  • Asked by Digital Spy what a 'vamp' is, Tristan replied: "A vamp is putting things together, putting ideas together, it's like an expression. That's how we came together, like throwing weird things together on YouTube and stuff."
  • After arriving at #10 on the Billboard 200, the Somebody to You EP earned the dubious distinction of the biggest ever second-week drop on the chart for a top 10-debuting album, when it plummeted 182 places to #192.

    The Four Horsemen Lyrics

    The Four Horsemen
  • Dave Mustaine brought this song to the band and worked on it with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. At the time, they called it "The Mechanix," and included it on their 1992 demo cassette No Life 'Til Leather.

After Mustaine was fired from the band in 1983, Metallica released Kill 'Em All with a re-worked version of this song renamed "The Four Horsemen." Mustaine's new group, Megadeth, released it as "Mechanix" as the last track on their first album, Killing Is My Business....
Mustaine's version has completely different lyrics, but the music is very similar. Since the Metallica song had been out for a while, Mustaine would often introduce "Mechanix" in concert by explaining that it was a track he wrote with Metallica. (thanks, Terry - Belleville, Canada)
  • "The Four Horsemen" is a biblical reference. In The New Testament, "The Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse" go in different directions to spread the word of the end of the world. The concept of The Four Horsemen is not limited to The Bible. In 1924, a sportswriter referred to The Notre Dame football team's backfield as "The Four Horsemen," and the school had the players pose on horses with their uniforms on to publicize the team, which was coached by the legendary Knute Rockne. The photo became famous when it was picked up by wire services and the nickname stuck. For Metallica, The Four Horsemen could refer to the four members of the band.
  • Dave Mustaine claims credit for the title. A group called Gamma (led by Ronnie Montrose) has a song called
"Four Horsemen" that Mustaine played in his pre-Metallica band, Panic. He would refer to Metallica as "The Four Horsemen" and suggested they cover the Gamma song. The band never did the cover, but they did appropriate the title.
  • The bit of "Sweet Home Alabama" in the middle of the song came about after Dave Mustaine had been listening to some Lynryd Skynyrd. When the band was working on the song, Mustaine played played some of "Alabama" because, as he says, he was "being a jerk." His little joke worked, however, and the final product ended up including the bit of the Skynyrd classic.
  • James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Dave Mustaine are the credited writers on this track. Mustaine also got credits on the Kill 'Em All tracks "Jump in the Fire," "Phantom Lord" and "Metal Militia."
  • Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of Iron Maiden, has called Metallica "the f--king bane of my life." In the Iron Maiden computer game Ed Hunter, there is a level set in Hell in which you can kill the "four horsemen." (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • Metallica has a habit of cutting the song in half by skipping the jam-like solo on the bridge of the song. It wasn't until December 7, 2011, on their 30th anniversary, that they played "The Four Horsemen" from beginning to end, including the bridge solo. (thanks, Cristian - Bellflower, CA)
  • The original album title was "Metal Up Yer Ass," with artwork of an arm holding a knife coming out of a toilet bowl. They thought it might cause problems, so they toned it down to Kill 'Em All, with a bloody hammer as artwork.

    Phantom Limb
  • Alice in Chains singer William DuVall told Drowned in Sound the story of the song: "'Phantom Limb' was a musical demo that was sent to me, which I immediately reacted to, and within a day or so had written all the words for it," he said. "Within the first few minutes, I had a couple of lines for it, and over the next day or so, I refined it. All that stuff happened pretty quickly."

"Basically within 48 hours of them sending the musical demo, I sent them back a fully formed vocal track, pretty much what you here on the record," Duvall continued. "The actual recording was reproducing what I did at home. It never had a solo, so at one point where we were at Hanson, deep into recording, [Jerry] Cantrell asked me, 'Do you wanna play the solo on that, 'Cause I don't have anything.'"
  • Asked by Guitar Player magazine how he would characterize his guitar role in Alice in Chains, DuVall replied: "It's everything from writing riffs to providing counterpoint to what Cantrell is doing to doubling what he's doing to playing solos. I do the solo on 'Phantom Limb' on this new album. So, it's really everything that you would expect from a two-guitar band."

"My being in the group also gives the band another guitar player who can write things, and we've also turned into a bit more of a jamming outfit when we rehearse," he added. "I'm told they didn't really do a whole lot of that before. But that's sort of where I come from: a jamming background. I'll start up something and see where it goes in rehearsal. That's a different way of interacting, which is cool."

    Wind Of Change Lyrics

    I follow the Moskva
    Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the Wind Of Change
    An August summer night
    Soldiers passing by
Listening to the wind of change

    The world is closing in
    Did you ever think
That we could be so close, like brothers
    The future's in the air
    I can feel it everywhere
Blowing with the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
    On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away (dream away)
    In the wind of change

    Walking down the street
    Distant memories
Are buried in the past forever
    I follow the Moskva
    Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
    On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams (share their dreams)
    With you and me
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night (the glory night)
Where the children of tomorrow dream away (dream away)
In the wind of change (the wind of change)

    The wind of change
Blows straight into the face of time
Like a stormwind that will ring the freedom bell
    For peace of mind
    Let your balalaika sing
What my guitar wants to say

Take me to the magic of the moment
    On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams (share their dreams)
With you and me (with you and me)
Take me to the magic of the moment
    On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away (dream away)
In the wind of change (in the wind of change)

    Wind Of Change
  • The band wrote this during a visit to Moscow in 1989. The previous year, they became the first hard-rock band to play in Russia, and they returned to play the Moscow Music Peace Festival. At this show, they were inspired by the sight of thousands of Russians cheering them on even though they were a German band. In our interview with Scorpions guitarist Rudolf Schenker, he called this song, "a kind of message soundtrack to the world's most peaceful revolution on earth."
  • Lead singer Klaus Meine told NME: "Everyone was there: the Red Army, journalists, musicians from Germany, from America, from Russia-the whole world on one boat. It was like a vision; everyone was talking the same language. It was a very positive vibe. That night was the basic inspiration for Wind Of Change."
  • In 1990, this became the unofficial anthem for the German Reunification, an event that politically lasted from the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 to the official reunification on October 3, 1990. (thanks, Martin - Rostock, Germany)
