Cinderella Man Lyrics

A modest man from Mandrake
Traveled rich to the city
He had a need to discover
A use for his newly-found wealth

Because he was human
Because he had goodness
Because he was moral
They called him insane

Delusions of grandeur
Visions of splendor
A manic-depressive
He walks in the rain

Eyes wide open
Heart undefended
Innocence untarnished

Cinderella Man
Doing what you can
They can't understand
What it means

Cinderella Man
Hang on to your plans
Try as they might
They cannot steal your dreams

In the betrayal of his love, he awakened
To face a world of cold reality
And a look in the eyes of the hungry
Awakened him to what he could do

He held up his riches
To challenge the hungry
Purposeful motion
For one so insane

They tried to fight him
Just couldn't beat him
This manic-depressive
Who walks in the rain

Cinderella Man
  • This is loosely based on a movie called Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, starring Gary Cooper as a man from a small town who inherits lots of money and moves to the big city.
  • Since joining the band in 1974, drummer Neil Peart has written the lyrics for Rush's songs. These lyrics are an exception - they were written by bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for above 2)
  • Neil Peart (from "A Condensed Rush Primer," A Farewell to Kings Tourbook: "'Cinderella Man' is a strong story written by Geddy with some help from Alex, and it concerns some of his reactions and feelings engendered by the film Mr. Deeds Goes To Town. This one features a very unusual (for us) middle instrumental section that might even be called (shudder) funky!" (thanks, Rick - Omaha, NE)

    Iron Sky Lyrics

We are proud individuals living on the city
But the flames couldn’t go much higher
We find gods and religions to
    To paint us with salvation
    But no one
    No nobody
    Can give you the power

    To rise over love
    And over hate
    Through this Iron Sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear and into freedom

    Oh, that’s life
    Left dripping down the walls
Of a dream that cannot breathe
    In this harsh reality
Mass confusion spoon fed to the blind
Serves now to define our cold society

From which we’ll rise over love
    Over hate
    From this iron sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear and into freedom

You just got to hold on!
You just got to hold on!

    Oh oh oh oh

(To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed
The bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress
The hate of men will pass, and dictators die
And the power they took from the people will return to the people
And so long as men die, liberty will never perish
Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men
Machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!
You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!
You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful
To make this life a wonderful adventure
    Let us use that power!
    Let us all unite!)

    And we’ll rise over love
    And over hate
    Through this iron sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear
    And into freedom
    Into freedom!

From which we’ll rise over love
    And over hate
    Through this iron sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear and into freedom
    Freedom!

Oh, from which we’ll rise over love
    And over hate
    Through this iron sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear and into freedom
    Freedom!

    Freedom!
    Rain on me!
    Rain on me!

    Iron Sky
  • This six-minute song finds Nutini urging politicians to turn modern fears "into freedom." He explained to The Sun: "The more I watch politicians in action, it just makes me angry. I watch certain politicians get asked questions that need answers and may just prance around with a big laugh and smile on my face. Politicians have an arrogance. I just do not understand. I've seen more constructive debate since high school."

"People get disillusioned and voting has little value to some people," he added. "That's sad."
  • The song features a sample from Charlie Chaplin's speech in his Hitler–lampooning 1940s film, The Great Dictator ("You are not machines! You are not cattle!").
  • A live performance of this song at London's Abbey Road studios saw an enthusiastic Adele tweet: "This is one of the best things I've ever seen in my life, hands down."
  • Paolo Nutini (from The Independent): "The world throws up new meanings for that one every day, but it's mainly that man-versus-machine thing. You know: you go into WH Smith these days and they steer you to the electronic checkout. I always think: 'Why so calm?' Don't you realize that thing that doesn't have a family to feed is going to have your job?"
  • A short film was released to accompany the song. Directed by Daniel Wolfe (Plan B), the nine-minute video offers a dystopian vision of the future, where people are suffering but are occasionally able to dance. According to the director he was sent the track by Nutini without any explanation, and the bleak future he created was inspired by Charlie Chaplin's speech that is sampled on the track.
  • This won for Best Track at the 2014 Q Awards.
  • Nutini told Q magazine he had to get permission from Charlie Chaplin's family to use the sample. He said: "To have them come back excited by the prospect only galvanized me more. To have Charlie Chaplin on your side certainly helps!"
  • Best remembered today as a comedian, Charlie Chaplin was also a talented composer. He penned "Smile" for the 1936 movie Modern Times, which became something standard with versions by Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Petula Clark, Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross. Thirty years later, another Charlie Chaplin tune, "This Is My Song," was a big hit for Petula Clark.

    New Life Lyrics

    Suddenly everyting is fainting
Falling from a broken ladder's rung
There's a jolt exhilarating from the phone I'm holding
I hear the words of what I'll become

How eager the hands that reach for love

'Cause now there's a New Life to behold
And its the biggest part of my life to unfold

'Cause now she's telling me she'll have my baby
And a faithful father I am to be
When I'm looking into the eyes of our own baby
Will it bring new life into me?

    Deep inside must defy arrangement
I've been a stumblin' from the startin' blocks 'til now
And I'll always try to justify the way I've been behaving
Should I teach one not to know how?
How to live in a world we live in now

'Cause there's a beautiful life to behold
And its the biggest part of my life to unfold

'Cause now she's telling me she'll have my baby
And a father figure I am to be
When I'm looking into the eyes of our own baby
Will it bring new life into me?

    Oh please
    Oh please
    Oh please

    Bring new life

    New Life
  • Lead singer Shannon Hoon wrote the lyrics to this song after hearing that he was to be a father. They are about the struggles he had in life that he would teach his child to overcome.

Sadly, Hoon never got the chance to raise his daughter, as he died of a drug overdose in 1995 shortly after the album was released while the band was on tour. Nico Hoon was born just a few months before Shannon's death. The band did what they could to look after her, naming their next album after Nico with proceeds helping to support her financially. In 2013, Blind Melon bassist Brad Smith told us that Nico is still very much a part of their lives. "Nico comes out and stays with us every year," he said. "Every spring break, she comes out to California and she comes in my studio and we hang out and we write a song. I get her to sing on stuff. I still am very much in contact with Shannon's daughter Nico."
  • Soup was Blind Melon's second album. Their first album got a lot of attention because of the hit single "No Rain," but Soup was largely ignored and sold very poorly as radio stations and MTV abandoned Blind Melon. Brad Smith of Blind Melon says that despite its commercial failure, the album is an artistic success. "Our first record sold many, many more units than our second record, but the second record had a lot more critical acclaim to it," he said. "People recognize it as the truth and pure. And I think that's the earmark of a great record."

    Looking For Something Lyrics

    Another day is washed away
    And all alibis are out
And the hand that used to heal me only cursed me now
The echoes of a woman so kind
Rain like waterfalls and ice-cream on my worried mind
I lay there in the puddle of myself
Fishing from a brand new wish from that bucket down the well
And in her colors I find my faith
Cause I remember every word that lady used to say

She said that hearts can't break themselves
Looking For Something, leaving with nothing
    But souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, sweet mother of mine!
Be a long home without you
It's just a long way home without you
    Yeah, yeah!

That's my mother, like no other
Made me human, made me brother
And it's swelling with blister for my sake and my sisters
The guardian of my karma, keep my feet on terrain firmer
And then release me like a scient to the sky!

She said that hearts can't break themselves
Looking for something, leaving with nothing
    But souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, sweet mother of mine!
It's just a long way home

Sister, you have some hungry eyes
    And by back you're hypnotized
    Smiling faces in disguise
    By back you're hypnotized
    Keep going against the grain
And soon that's all, soon that's all you'll know
And soon that's all you'll know
    And let's get this straight
Sometimes you'll rise, and there's time you'll fall
After all, you're just blood and bones
And you don't owe no one, oh
No, you don't owe no one
So don't live like one price is right
Cause there is some things in your life that you can't fight!

She said that hearts can't break themselves
Looking for something, wind up with nothing
    But souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, sweet mother of mine!

She said that hearts can't break themselves
Looking for something, leaving with nothing
    But souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, learning to fly
She said that souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, learning to fly
    Oh souls can't save themselves
Learning to fly, learning to fly
Oh momma, how I love you!
Learning to fly, learning to fly
No momma, how I love you
Learning to fly, sweet mother of mine!

    Nobody to Love
  • Sigma is a duo consisting of Cameron Edwards and Joe Lenzie, who first met at Leeds University in 2006 at drum and bass nights. Once they had finished in Leeds, the pair relocated to London and formed their own record label, Life Recordings.

In 2010 Sigma hooked up with DJ Fresh to record "Lassitude." Released as the fifth single from Fresh's album Kryptonite it peaked at #98 on the UK Singles Chart.

Sigma released their debut single "Rudeboy" in December 2013 after signing with 3Beat. That song reached #56 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • This is Sigma's second single with 3Beat. Originally a bootleg remix of Kanye West's "Bound 2," it was released on January 24, 2014 for free download. After receiving support from major British radio stations the tune was reworked into an original track with Charlie Wilson's original vocal being covered by a session vocalist. The new version was dropped on April 6, 2014, topping the UK iTunes chart upon release.
  • It was the hook of "Bound 2" that drew Sigma to rework the tune. Joe Lenzie told Digital Spy : "We loved the sound of the piano chords and the Charlie Wilson vocal and we just thought that could really work as a drum and bass track."

"What we do when we have studio sessions is we spend a lot of time just listening to other stuff to try and see if we can get influence from different genres," he continued. "I think the fact that it was perfectly half speed for drum and bass as well that can be a big part of what's actually gonna work. You might hear something that's a great chord structure that you might think about remixing or whatever but if it's the wrong speed it just kind of kills the vibe."
  • So what does Kanye West think of Sigma's reworking of the song? Joe Lenzie said: "His management contacted us asking if we'd be prepared to somehow put together some exclusive VIP thing that he was gonna perform when he played at Wireless, but I think it was so last minute and we were in Miami at the time filming the video for 'Changing,' so we ended up just not doing it basically. But I'm assuming that that means that he must like it in one way I guess."
  • This was the first ever drum & bass track to hit 100 million YouTube views.

    Lakeside Park Lyrics

    Midway hawkers calling
    "Try your luck with me"
    Merry-go-round wheezing
    The same old melody
    A thousand ten-cent wonders
    Who could ask for more?
    A pocketful of silver
    The key to heaven's door

    Lakeside Park
    Willows in the breeze
    Lakeside Park
    So many memories
    Laughing rides
    Midway lights
    Shining stars on summer nights

    Days of barefoot freedom
    Racing with the waves
    Nights of starlit secrets
    Crackling driftwood flames
    Drinking by the lighthouse
    Smoking on the pier
    Still we saw the magic
    Fading every year

    Everyone would gather
    On the twenty-fourth of May
    Sitting in the sand
    To watch the fireworks display
    Dancing fires on the beach
    Singing songs together
    Though it's just a memory
    Some memories last forever

    Lakeside Park
  • The "Lakeside Park" is St. Catharine's, on Lake Ontario in Canada. Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart lived very near Lakeside Park and spent summers as a child working and playing there. This song details his memories, his time spent there, and of how it used to be before they changed it.
  • The lyrics mention the "24th of May" - This is Victoria Day, commemorating Queen Victoria's birthday. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington)
  • Neil Peart (from Traveling Music): "Another important setting in my childhood and early teens was Lakeside Park, in Port Dalhousie. When I was 14 and 15, I worked summers at Lakeside Park as a barker ('Catch a bubble, prize every time,' all day and night), and there was music: some of the kids brought transistor radios to work, and the music of that summer of 1966 played up and down the midway. At night, when the midway closed, we gathered around a fire on the beach, singing. Lakeside Park resonated in my life in so many deep ways, especially those fundamental exposures to music that would be forever important. It's all gone now. All that's left, apart from memories, is the old merry-go-round." (thanks, Rick - Omaha, NE)

    Hey, hey glory child, hey

Hey glory child, don't you worry
    Stuttering, shaken off your fear
Beauty's never given in a hurry
So condescending, leave your questions here
Hey glory child, don't you worry
I can see your skeleton so clear
Doubting's only made your visions blurry
You're better off just looking in the mirror

Show me a better way, I wish you could
Show me a better way, I wish you would
    Come home today, you could
    Come home today

I am shooting stars you will never see me
    Watching over your every mistake
Digging out of graves is never easy
Handing you my shovel, here to take
Always playing catch me if you can
Gingerbread you heard I'm sweet to taste
Close your eyes let go and count to ten
I'll keep track of every moment wasted

Show me a better way, I wish you could
Show me a better way, I wish you would
    Come home today, you could
    Come home today

Dear God make me a bird, so I can fly far, far far away
Dear God make me a bird, so I can fly far, far far away
Dear God make me a bird, so I can fly far, far far away

Call your phone on a late night
I recall your soul had a taste like
    Gardens, flowers, Warm Winds

    The clouds below your feet
    Quit clipping on your wings
Sometimes we hate to leave somebody
    Whats happening to we?
Warm winds on a space ride
When I call your phone on a late night
I recall your soul had a taste like
    Gardens, flowers, Warm Winds

    The clouds below your feet
    Quit clipping on your wings
Sometimes we hate to leave somebody
    Whats happening to we?
Warm Winds on a space ride

Sometimes, I call your name out loud
Just to make sure it's you
Sometimes, I crack my veins open
Just to see if it's blue
    You clean me up

Show me a better way, I wish you could
Show me a better way, I wish you would
    Come home today, you could
    Come home today

Sometimes I bite my lips and close my eyes
    Just to pretend it's you
Long live, lonely thoughts on Thursday nights
That's when I think of you
    We were all thirteen once
Long live tramp stamps and Pepper Ann
You will never judge me for that
You will always love me for that

Warm Winds on a space ride

  • Solana Rowe is an American singer-songwriter from Maplewood, New Jersey who is better known as SZA. She first met members of Top Dawg Entertainment, the record label housing rappers Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and their Black Hippy crew, during the CMJ 2011. A friend attending the show with her persuaded TDE president Terrence "Punch" Henderson to listen to some of her material, which he liked. In July 2013 it was announced that SZA was the first R&B act on the TDE roster.
  • SZA recorded much of her debut Z album in Carson, California during the summer of 2013, where she shared accommodation with labelmate Rashad. The pair became friends and collaborated on each other's songs. SZA sang the hook on Rashad's 2013 single "Ronnie Drake" and Rashad returned the favor on this Mac Miller co-produced track.

"Him and all his producers would kick open my door in the morning and jump on the bed and light blunts at 9 AM," SZA recalled to Billboard magazine. "Now we're each other's security blanket, in a way. We just get each other really well."

When I wake up in the morning, love
And the sunlight hurts my eyes

    Lovely Day
  • Skip Scarborough was a songwriter and producer who worked with Earth, Wind & Fire, Patti Labelle, LTD, and many other R&B stars before his death in 2003. He wrote the music for this song, and was also the inspiration for the lyrics Withers came up with. In our interview with Bill Withers, he explained: "Skip was a very nice, gentle man. The way Skip was, every day was just a lovely day. He was an optimist. If I had sat down with the same music and my collaborator had been somebody else with a different personality, it probably would have caused something else to cross my mind lyrically. It was a combination of the music and the person and the ambiance in the room."
  • Withers told us: "We're all sponges in a sense. You put us around very nice people, and the nice things come out in us. You put us around some jerks, and we practice being jerks. We all adjust. Did you ever notice the difference in the way you speak to your grandmother or your best contemporary friend? If I had sat down with the same music and my collaborator had been somebody else with a different personality, it probably would have caused something else to cross my mind lyrically."
  • In 1999, this was used in a series of very popular commercials for The Gap, where it helped sell a lot of Khakis. Many people discovered the song because of the commercial.
  • Near the end of the song, Withers holds a note for 18 seconds... "Lovely Daaaaaaaaay." This might be the longest held vocal note of any hit song.
  • In 1992, a group called The Soul System remade this into a dance song that was used in the movie The Bodyguard. It wasn't the first time one of Withers' songs was made into a dance hit - in 1987 Club Noveau had a #1 hit with a cover of "Lean On Me."
  • Artists who have covered this include Clarence Carter, Hootie & the Blowfish and Take 6. Luther Vandross also recorded it with Busta Rhymes on Vandross' last album Dance With My Father.

There lurks a mysterious, invisible force
    The Black Hole
    Of Cygnus X-1

Six stars of the northern cross
In mourning for their sister's loss
In a final flash of glory
    Nevermore to grace the night

    One
    Invisible
    To telescopic eye
    Infinity
The star that would not die

    All who dare
    To cross her course
    Are swallowed by
    A fearsome force

    Through the void
    To be destroyed
    Or is there something more?
    Atomized, at the core
    Or through the Astral Door
    To soar

    Two
I set a course just east of Lyra
    And northwest of Pegasus
Flew into the light of Deneb
    Sailed across the Milky Way

    On my ship, the 'Rocinante'
    Wheeling through the galaxies,
Headed for the heart of Cygnus
    Headlong into mystery

The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
    Nearer to my deadly goal
    Until the Black Hole
    Gains control

    Three
    Spinning, whirling
    Still descending
    Like a spiral sea
    Unending

    Sound and fury
    Drowns my heart
    Every nerve
    Is torn apart

    Pre-Road Downs Lyrics

    I have kissed you
    So I'll miss you
On the road I'll be wantin' you

    But I have you
    'Cause I love you
And you have me 'cause you love me too, yeah

    Felt forsaken
    You'll awaken
To the joys of livin' hand in glove

    And then I will
    Lend you my will
And your days will be filled with love

    Don't run the time approaches
    Hotels and midnight coaches
Be sure to hide the roaches

    Felt rejected
    As expected
You rejected all the thoughts of words

    So I'll pray with
    You to stay with
Me forever and we'll make it work

    Elevated
    You're elated
'Cause I've waited a year for you

    If you're thinkin'
    What I'm thinkin'
Then I'm gonna make my love to you

    Don't run the time approaches
    Hotels and midnight coaches
Be sure to hide the roaches

    Pre-Road Downs
  • Crosby, Stills & Nash first sung together during an informal jam at the house of Cass Elliot. The trio were so fond of the Mamas And The Papas' singer that she sung backing vocals on this song during the part that goes "Hotels and midnight coaches. Be sure to hide the roaches."

"She insisted, and with good reason," Nash recalled to Uncut magazine in 2014. "Nobody else would have the balls to do that, that we loved her dearly. So we agreed."

"I've always thought that Cass understood intuitively what the sound of me, David and Stephen singing together would sound like, and when she introduced me to them, she knew they were trying to put something together," Nash added.

Cass Elliot was the only person outside of the trio who sang on the Crosby, Stills & Nash album.
  • David Crosby commented to MusicRadar.com of this Graham Nash penned tune: "A Nash song after he realized that he could write rock 'n' roll – fierce rock 'n' roll."
  • The backwards guitar was played by Stephen Stills. Said an admiring Crosby: "This is real backwards guitar, and how he got it match up to the forwards stuff, I have no idea. He did it, and we looked him and thought, This guy is from f---ing Mars! I'm still freaked out by it."
