It Girl Lyrics

You the It Girl, hey hey, my inspiration
My compass spinnin', baby, it's the right destination, oh
Oh come on, come on, give me what I came for
I got treasure to hide, so let's keep it from the strangers, hey

Your waves, they wash all over me
Your tides, they pull me back to sea
When you bite on my lip
And hold my hand, and moan again, I'ma hold that ass
When you kiss on my lips
And hold my hand, and moan again, I'ma hold that ass

You don't know, I've been missin' you
Baby when you, go
Only way you could do that girl to me

You the it girl, hey hey, my inspiration
My compass spinnin', baby, it's the right destination, oh
Oh come on, come on, give me what I came for
I got treasure to hide, so let's keep it from the strangers, hey

Your waves, they wash all over me
Your tides, they pull me back to sea
When you bite on my lip
And hold my hand, and moan again, I'ma hold that ass
When you kiss on my lips
And hold my hand, and moan again, I'ma hold that ass

You don't know, I've been missin' you
Baby when you, go, I'm be missin' you
Truly gettin' me high, I be missin' you
You make me downright seasick
Oh the only way you can do that girl to me

You the it girl, hey hey, my inspiration
My compass spinnin', baby, it's the right destination, oh
Oh come on, come on, tell me what I came for
I got treasure to hide, so let's keep it from the strangers, hey

Your waves, they wash all over me
Your tides, they pull me back to sea
When you bite on my lip
And hold my hand, and moan again, I'ma hold that ass
When you kiss on my lips
And hold my hand, and moan again, I'ma holdin' ass

It Girl
  • Pharrell closes G I R L with this ode to the love of his life. He had been in a relationship with model/designer Helen Lasichanh for several years and they married in Miami on October 12, 2013.
  • G I R L is a tribute to ladies - physically and emotionally. The Neptunes producer's only previous solo album, 2006's In My Mind, received generally mixed reviews and had a disappointing commercial performance. Williams told GQ magazine how he got a call from Daft Punk's label, Columbia in Spring 2013. "And they're like, Look, we know that you're not interested in doing another solo album," he recalled. "But we know that you're going to change your mind. Even if you're not ready now, we know you're going to change your mind. And since we know that, we'd like to get ahead of it and change your mind and tell you, 'Look, here's a deal. Go make whatever album you want to make.'"

Pharrell took some convincing, but once he'd signed, he already knew what the album would be. "I instantly knew that the name of the album was called G I R L," he said, "and the reason why is because women and girls, for the most part, have just been so loyal to me and supported me."
  • The song finishes on a long instrumental fade with distorted guitar riffs, warping strings and chiming percussion behind which Pharrell repeats the word 'girl.' He explained at the listening party that it's a song written with live shows in mind, hence the funky breakdown.
  • The colorful animated video channels both Japanese anime and 64-bit video game styles as we see a cartoon version of Pharrell wearing his recognisable Vivienne Westwood hat.

Williams created the clip with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. The pair previously worked together in 2009, when they collaborated on a sculpture that allegedly sold for $2 million. The Neptunes producer also remixed the theme song to Murakami's film Jellyfish Eyes five years later.

    These Are The Times Lyrics

    These Are The Times
  • James Young: "These Are the Times is really an intervention song and what the lyrics are have kind of evolved - what they are at this stage and what they were when Tommy and I first wrote it. When we first started working on it was seven years ago, it was more about, Tommy was heavily involved, and still is, with drug interventions, and very supportive of a lot of groups that do work in that field and I've been through a number of those, notably with our dearly departed first drummer John Panozzo. The song was about intervening in someone's life, kind of in a way that Chuck (Panozzo), who is now openly a gay man who has come out and announced that he's HIV-positive and his struggles with this - it's about supporting him. Ultimately, what the lyrics finally evolved into, in a way, was the passing of my younger brother from a lymphoma and when we had to take him off life support. When we were in his room, everyone was around crying and it was very emotional and from the next room comes the sound of Jimi Hendrix' 'Purple Haze.' This is in the intensive care unit and I said, 'This is my brother speaking to me, speaking to us.' And it lightened the mood. 'I hear voices from beyond the veil,' it sort of inspired that line, Tommy and I collaborated on that. So that song has kind of become about helping those, that there is something to live for, for those that think there isn't." (thanks, Jayme - Stockbridge, MI)

    Woo woo!
    Yessur! aha
    New Skateboard P
    Hey!
    Let's go get 'em
    Uh-huh
    Yo, hola

    Mearle maire, club muchacho
    Asorted flavours, in they solatos
Inspire young minds, stacked by Nato's
With the right determination of a patho
Running 'cross the water with bricks at his poncho
Face like a shoot when it's bussin' my glock hold
Vanity stings, 'til I die when the holy father hands me my wings
When I was young yo the teacher gave me stanity dreams
Giving me music like drugs and they handed me things, they shoot it up
See me on the TV, the cuties they wanna fuck
Both presidential and plus, they hoop it up
Got more hits in his zip, who want enough
I can go back in time, you be Judge Eato
With my men and ?? I know you thinkin' Neato
Givin' peace to minutes, something like your T-Vo
But it's 3 hundred thousand more with no remote
Take it in the rain, I used to live with Tito
But he clowned me and told me that my money's free-doughs
Now the Enzo doors go up like a Dilo
Reon, same song some from my man Nigo
SLR, when the doors go up it's like a fresh elle jar
Nigga we boss, he shall not get hot, he too frost
    Yessur...
    My nigga close your eyes,
Just picture you're self just holdin' pies
Implement a plan and and you'll surely rise
Just promised by the man that controls the skies
Don't you see, I know that shit's so ill
Better yet, dawg, just tell me how you feel
    How you feel dawg?

We just picture thinking, dreaming, scheming, breathing, reading, all in the late night
Shaking, boiling, lacing, bake it, shaping, shaving, gotta get this cake right
As I serve it, you just burn it, breathe it, learn it, now watch you take flight
My nigga how does it feel?
    Ha ha! Yessur!

    Nigga you don't know me
I'm part Howard Hues, part horny, part holy
First trip on the ramp is the rock and rolly
Keep one on my staff with a new pro-chromy
If they priest need the mention that I've been biten
But a force be the chocolate where critics are written
He dresses insane where his music admire
Ask anyone from Vouge and Esquire And Vanity Fair you like can of the year
But you should guess who's in insanity chair
Now it ain't about what I want
Still thumbing through my life like a drug-star porn
It's one thing to say you did it
It's one thing to lie about your didgits
It's one thing to say that you live it
It's another for you fuckers to admit it
But I admit I got all this paper plus the prettiest faces that's off of our nature
I drive a Casper, s'cuse me Cassper, wanted meet me at my house, I got space like NASA
And it'll make me happy buy yourself a Sattle
Unlike my sister Stacy when she lost her papa
I been there, gettin stroke and nothing to trap-uh
John could do, when surrounded with true
A man dies, baby born, as far as Peru
It's a simple proof between us and imposters
We hop in the air, and don't care what it costs us
Now I'm with NERD with a pit full of Martians
I guess you could say that we fly like saucers
Zapping at niggas, with classing and figure
    The cash and class whippers
    The thrashing mag ripper
Go 'head and say it (you a rappin' ass nigga)
    Yessur!

    How Does It Feel?
  • Pharrell Williams was riding high as a producer in the mid 2000s, providing hit singles for the likes of Gwen Stefani, Ludacris, and Beyoncé. However, his debut solo album, a braggadocious rap record titled In My Mind, was a commercial disappointment. Reflecting back on this track during a 2014 interview with GQ magazine, Williams admitted his life at the time was without purpose. "That wasn't joy," he said. "That was just bragging. I wanted to be like Jay. I wanted to be like Puff. Those are their paths. I got my own path. But I didn't know what my path was. I knew that I was meant to do something different. I knew that I needed to inject purpose in my music. And I thought that was my path. I didn't realize that like, from '08 up until now was like, training. Like, keep putting purpose in everything you do. Don't worry about it; just put purpose in there."

    Jessie's Girl Lyrics

    Jessie is a friend,
Yeah I know he's been a good friend of mine
    But lately something's changed
    It ain't hard to define
    Jessie's got himself a girl
And I want to make her mine
And she's watching him with those eyes
And she's lovin' him with that body, I just know it
And he's holding her in his arms late, late at night

You know I wish that I had Jessie's Girl
    I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Why can't I find a woman like that

I'll play along with this charade
That doesn't seem to be a reason to change
You know I feel so dirty when they start talking cute
I want to tell her that I love but the point is probably moot
'Cause she's watching him with those eyes
And she's lovin' him with that body, I just know it
And he's holding her in his arms late, late at night

You know I wish that I had Jessie's girl
    I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Why can't I find a woman like that?

    Like Jessie's girl
    I wish that I had Jessie's girl
    Why can't I find a woman
Why can't I find a woman like that

And I'm lookin' in the mirror all the time
Wonderin' what she don't see in me
I've been funny; I've been cool with the lines
Ain't that the way love's supposed to be
Tell me why can't I find a woman like that

You know I wish that I had Jessie's girl
    I wish that I had Jessie's girl
Why can't I find a woman like that?
    Like Jessie's girl

    I wish that I had Jessie's girl
    I want, I want Jessie's girl

    Jessie's Girl
  • Who is Jessie's girl? We may never know, but in our interview with Rick Springfield , he told us the story. Said Rick: "I don't know her name. It was a brief relationship I had when I was making stained glass for a while. I was going to a stained glass class in Pasadena, and I met this guy and his girlfriend. I was completely turned on to his girlfriend, but she was just not interested. So I had a lot of sexual angst, and I went home and wrote a song about it. Then about 4 months later I stopped going to the class and lost contact with them. The only thing I remember is his name was Gary, so I changed the name, because 'Gary' didn't sing very well. But the whole thing is absolutely what I was feeling. He was getting it and I wasn't, and it was really tearing me up. And sexual angst is an amazing motivator to write a song. Actually, Oprah's people tried to find her, and they got as far back as finding the stained glass guy. I couldn't remember his name, but I said it was late '70s; they found him, and he had died 2 years earlier, and they'd thrown all his papers out a year after that. So we missed finding out who she was by a year."
  • This was Springfield's second Top 20 hit (the first being "Speak To The Sky" in 1971) and it was his only #1, where it stayed for two weeks in August, 1981. The popularity of the song and album that summer was bolstered by the fact that Springfield, also an actor, had landed the role of Dr. Noah Drake on the soap opera General Hospital earlier that spring. Springfield began acting in the mid-'70s when his music career had stalled and his then-girlfriend, actress Linda Blair, suggested he try it.

Speaking of Linda Blair, when Springfield and Blair were dating, Blair was just 15 years old while Springfield was 25. They only lived together for one year, and according to an interview on VH1's Behind the Music, Blair said, "He's someone I'll always love" while Springfield says that of all his former girlfriends, Blair is the only one he remains friends with. Remember that this was 1974, when standards were a little more relaxed, and median age of consent for most of Springfield's native country of Australia is 16. (thanks, Dawn - Highlands Ranch, CO)
  • Spingfield's take on relationships: "We’re clueless. Desperately clueless. Everybody is on relationships. Truly, I remember being a jerk because I thought that’s what girls wanted. You only really learn about women when you get into a long relationship, unless you got a really great dad – a really clued-in father – or a really open mom."
  • This was the #1 song in the United States when MTV launched on August 1, 1981. The video became a favorite on the fledgling network, as the photogenic Springfield starred in a well-produced promo where he used his acting skills to portray his angst.

Springfield says it's his only video where he took creative control, storyboarding it himself. The scene where he smashes the mirror remains an iconic clip; it was the most expensive part of the video, since Rick estimates that went through 24 mirrors.
  • In the category of weird covers, this song was covered by The Chipmunks, using the same instrumental backing track, no less. Check out their 1982 album Chipmunk Rock if you just have to have it.
  • This song was used in the movie 13 Going On 30 starring Jennifer Garner. (thanks, Julian - Anaheim, CA)

    Sanctified Lyrics

There's a few million angels movin' around me
I just worship thee, for all he's done for me
It's a new day, I have been born again
I've been born again, I've been born again
In His spirit, and His name
    I'm Sanctified!
    Lord I testify
    He's right by my side
    I believe it be
His word is so clear to me
    Yeah, yeah

OK all I want is 100 million dollars and a bad bitch
Plus that paper chasin', it done turn me to a savage
Groupies in the lobby they just tryna get established
God, I've been guilty, fornicatin' from my status

All I wanted was 100 million dollars and a bad bitch
Plus that paper chasin', it done turn me to a savage
Groupies in the lobby they just tryna get established
God, I've been guilty, fornicatin' from my status

Niggas be lovin' the old Ye, they sayin' the new Ye, that nigga be spazzin'
But when Ali turn up and be Ali, you can't ever take that nigga back to Cassius
So you can gon' and make them lies, but I'm so sanctified
I don't sweat it, wipe my forehead with a handkerchief
And wash my sins in the blood of Jesus
People sayin', "Ye we need another Yeezus"
Lames try to tell me, "Cut the wilin' out, out"
But who the fuck is you reachin'
Pass me 30 bottles, champagne procession
That's that Holy water, sanctified refreshments
God sent me a message, said I'm too aggressive
    Really!? Me!? Too aggressive!?

Feel his blessings wash away my sins
I'm sanctified and, I have been born again
Now I proclaim, hallowed be thy name, oh

All I want is 100 million dollars and a bad bitch
Plus that paper chasin', it done turn me to a savage
Groupies in the lobby they just tryna get established
God, I've been guilty, fornicatin' from my status

Keys to my success, I get new keys and new address
Bitches that I date don't get degrees but they can dress
Felatio's amazin', make grilled cheese for you, the best
Major coke figure, I'm the fresh David Koresh
Soldiers all in Al-Qaeda, new Mercades for cadets
Balmain uniform, you know Donda designed the vest
Double M, that be the Army, better yet the Navy
Baby seen me in that Wraith, wanna have my baby
All I wanted was a hundred million dollars and a bad bitch
Now I want two hundred and menage in my palace
Walkin' out the jeweler with no mothafuckin' balance
Somewhere in Jamaica I'm still holdin' on my chalice
Rims on my Ferrari, my bitch said that I went childish
'Til I fucked the girl, the girl tweeted that I was stylish
When we fucked again, she said "That was just some foul shit"
I walk into the room, you can even hear all the silence

Feel his blessings wash away my sins
I'm sanctified and, I have been born again
Now I proclaim, hallowed be thy name, oh

    Sanctified
  • This Mastermind cut features a verse from Kanye West in which he pokes fun at the public perception that he's too aggressive. The rapper brought along G.O.O.D. Music signee Big Sean to spit the hook. Big Sean put out his verse that didn’t make the song as a free download a couple of days after the release of Mastermind.
  • DJ Mustard supplied the gospel-laced beat. The producer recalled to Billboard magazine how he got a call to meet West for the first time in a studio in Santa Barbara, California ."I didn't know who's project it was for, I just knew that I was going to get to work with Kanye," he said. "I've been a fan of his for a minute, so I was just kind of soaking up game and watching him do what he does."
  • That's Soul great Betty Wright singing the intro and bridge. The Miami-based singer-songwriter joined the family Gospel group the Echoes of Joy in 1956 and made her first records for Deep City at the age of thirteen. She won fame in the 1970s with the hits "Clean Up Woman" and "Where Is The Love," winning the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues song for the latter.

Wright's songs have been much sampled over the years, but producer Mike Dean confirmed that her contribution on this cut is not borrowed - they got the soul legend to come into the studio and croon some notes.
  • The song took a long time to complete. Ross recalled to The Sun newspaper: "The chorus started out as a sample. Then we tried a vocalist, then another, then another... In the end, we just said: 'Let's get a real gospel singer to give us that feeling.' I reached out to look beautiful, talented, Betty Wright, who has always been shining in Miami, and she showed some love and it paid off."

    Danny Boy Lyrics

Oh, Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side.
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling,
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow,
It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,
Oh, Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so!

But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,
If I am dead, as dead I well may be,
You'll come and find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be,
For you will bend and tell me that you love me,
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me!

    Danny Boy
  • Originally set to the tune of the ancient melody "The Londonderry Air," this song has been rumored to have been written about a father singing to his son, who apparently was named Danny. The song was based on a story about an Irish father whose son was eventually going off to war in Ireland.
  • Many of the traditional versions have only four verses, but the most recognized version, and the most common one for Ireland, has six verses in total. (thanks, Annabelle - Eugene, OR)
  • Some of the many artists who recorded this include Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Johnny Cash, Patti LaBelle, Glen Miller and Elvis Presley.
  • Tradition links the composition of the piece to a seventeenth century blind harpist, Rory Dall O'Cahan. In 1851, Jane Ross, of Limavady, Co Londonderry, wrote down the music after hearing it played by an itinerant fiddler. The "Londonderry Air" became popular with the Irish diaspora, especially in America, and in 1910, Frederick Edward Weatherly, an English lawyer, who is thought never to have set foot in Ireland, wrote the words.

According to the book Sunshine and in Shadow: The Family Story of Danny Boy written by Weatherly's great grandson Anthony Mann, after Weatherly penned the lyrics, he struggled to find the right melody for the song. Eventually Weatherly's sister-in-law, Margaret Enright, an Irish American known as Jess, introduced the tune he was looking for when she sung "Londonderry Air" to the lyricist while visiting his home in 1912. Weatherly shaped the lyrics to the tune and published "Danny Boy" soon after. However, Frederic never acknowledged Jess's contribution, which caused a major division in the family. Mann explained to The Irish Times: "Jess, who resented for the rest of her life the fact that Fred had taken this melody and made it his own, went on (with Eddie) to die in poverty while Fred enjoyed both fame and wealth."
  • Prudish Victorians, concerned that "Londonderry Air" bore too close a resemblance to the phrase "London derrière," preferred to refer to it by the title "An Air From County Derry."
  • If you don't like this song or are just sick of it, you're not the only one. When we asked Matt Kelly of the Dropkick Murphys about his favorite Irish songs, he replied: "I love 'Come Out Ye Black and Tans,' 'At The Rising of the Moon' is a great tune, and 'My Brother Sylveste' is a great song. Those are some of the bigger ones. You know, if I never heard 'Oh, Danny Boy' or 'Smile Again,' it would be just fine."

    Ra pa pa pa pa

Yo no te dije ni una frase de amor
Y no digo que sea ilógico
Pero esa noche tu cuerpo pidió calor
    Sin romance nada bíblico
No te lleve serenata a tu ventana
Ni escribí mil poesías en bachata

There she stood in the street

Maybe we can see things the same
Now don't you wait or hesitate
Let's move before they raise the parking rate

All Right Now baby, it's all right now
All right now baby, it's all right now

I took her home to my place
Watching every move on her face
She said look, what's your game baby
Are you tryin' to put me in shame?
I said "slow don't go so fast,
Don't you think that love can last?
    She said Love, Lord above
Now you're tryin' to trick me in love

All right now baby, it's all right now
All right now baby, it's all right now

    Yeah, it's all right now
    Oh yeah

Let me tell you all about now
Took her home to my place
Watching every move on her face
She said look, what's your game
Are you tryin' to put me in shame?
Baby,I said "slow don't go so fast
Don't you think that love can last?
    She said love, Lord above
Now he's tryin' to trick me in love

All right now baby, it's all right now
All right now baby, it's all right now

All right now baby, it's all right now
All right now baby, baby, baby it's all right now
All right now baby, it's all right now
All right now baby, it's all right now
(All right now baby, it's all right now) We are so happy together it's alright,it's alright,it's alright
(Everything alright) all right now baby, it's all right now

    All Right Now
  • In the CD Molton Gold - An Anthology, Free drummer Tom Mautner explains: "'All Right Now' was created after a bad gig in Durham, England. Our repertoire at that time was mostly slow and medium paced blues songs which was alright if you were a student sitting quietly and nodding your head to the beat. However, we finished our show in Durham and walked off the stage to the sound of our own footsteps. The applause had died before I had even left the drum riser. When we got into the dressing room, it was obvious that we needed an uptempo number, a rocker to close our shows. All of sudden, the Inspiration struck (bass player Andy) Fraser, and he started bopping around singing ALL RIGHT NOW... He sat down and wrote it right there in the dressing room. It couldn't have taken more than 10 minutes." (thanks, Annie - Boston, MA)
  • This is the first hit song with vocals by Paul Rodgers. He later joined Bad Company and also played with The Firm and Queen.
  • The song is about a guy who picks up a girl on the street and takes her home for sex.
  • This song really took off after Free's performance at the Isle of Wight Festival on August 31,1970 at the East Aftom Farm, Aftom Down, where over 600,000 people attended the festival. Los Angeles disc jockey Joe Benson told Paul Rodgers during an on air interview that "All Right Now" is playing over the airwaves somewhere around the world once every 45 seconds. (thanks, John - Port Orchard, WA)
  • When Paul Rodgers teamed up with Queen in 2004 to tour as Queen + Paul Rodgers, this was a regular part of their set list and a crowd favorite.
  • The album version is over a minute longer than the radio edit, which had a shorter guitar solo. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The song has soundtracked numerous commercials in the UK, most famously in 1990 when it featured in a TV ad for Wrigley's chewing gum, which generated enough interest to return the tune to the UK charts. "I can't keep track of where it's turned up," Paul Rodgers ruefully told The Independent April 7, 2010. "Island Records owned the publishing rights to all our songs in perpetuity. In theory, they're supposed to call me and ask, 'Can we use this song in this way?' but they often don't. I think if the money's good enough, they just go, 'Yes! Wrigley's? YES!!'"
  • A less satisfactorily tie-in came when the song was used to advertise a foot-odour powder on television. "You use this stuff on your feet and the song comes on to signify that your feet are All Right Now, you see," Rogers said acidly. "I rang Chris Blackwell about it. He had it taken off pretty smartly."
  • The song has been covered by many bands and artists including Mike Oldfield, Rod Stewart, Christina Aguilera, the Runaways and, ex-Wham! backing singers Pepsi & Shirlie.
  • This topped a 2010 online fan poll by UK radio station Planet Rock for the "Greatest Rock Singles." Said Paul Rodgers: "When I started writing 'All Right Now' the lyrics and the melody flowed easily. It felt special and it's still special to me and the fans. It's a 'must play' in my solo set."
  • Andy Fraser recalled the writing of the song to Mojo magazine October 2012: "We'd started work on our third album, Fire and Water and things were going well. The idea for 'All Right Now' came about on a rainy Tuesday night in some godsforsaken minor city - I can't remember where - in England. We were playing a college that could have held 2,000 but had something like 30 people out of their heads on Mandrax bumping into each other in front of us. They didn't notice when we came on or when we went off.

Afterwards there was that horrible silence in the dressing room. To break the intensity, I started singing, 'All right now…come on baby, all right now.' As if to say, Hey, tomorrow's another day. Everyone else started tapping along. That riff was me trying to do my Pete Townshend. We listened to everything, though: The Beatles, Stax and Motown, Gladys Knight And the Pips was one of our main influences then.

Paul (Rodgers) said he wrote the lyrics while he was waiting for us to pick him up for another gig. We used to have a dressing room amp, so every night we'd do the song and add a bit, until we tested it live."

    Gangsta
  • Schoolboy Q opens his major label debut album, Oxymoron, with this ode to the gangsta lifestyle. It begins with the first of several cameos by Q's 4-year-old daughter Joy, where she spits "F--k rap, my daddy's a gangsta."
  • This is one of two songs on Oxymoron that Chicago-based production duo Nez & Rio supplied the beat for. They previously contributed production for a couple of tracks on Schoolboy Q's 2012 album Habits & Contradictions.
  • Speaking about the song at a February 2014 listening session for Oxymoron, Q said: "When I first made ['Gangsta'] all I wanted to say was that my grandma showed me my first strap. That's all I wanted to put in the song. I just thought that was so gangsta. It was kind of weird, too, now that I really think about it. She used to take her bullets out of the gun and leave the clip in her room and let me play with her gun. I was an only child so I probably got on her nerves that much that she finally gave me her burner, like, 'Here, get the f--k out my face.' [Laughs] I just wanted to say that so bad."
  • Q's label boss Anthony Tiffith told Billboard magazine about his reaction to hearing the rapper's story: "ScHoolboy is gangsta. When he first told me that story, I was like, 'Your grandmother gave you your first gun? Really? I'm scared of your grandma - I'm going to make sure your contract is†¯right!'†¯"

    The Metro Lyrics

    The Metro
    Berlin

    I'm alone
    Sitting with my empty glass
    My four walls
    Follow me through my past
I was on a Paris train
    I emerged in London rain
    And you were waiting there
    Swimming through apologies

I remember searching for the perfect words
I was hoping you might change your mind
I remember a soldier sleeping next to me
    Riding on the Metro

    You wore white
Smiling as you took my hand
    So removed
We spoke of wintertime in France
    Minutes passed with shallow words
Years have passed and still the hurt
    I can see you now
    Smiling as I pulled away

I remember the letter wrinkled in my hand
"I'll love you always" filled my eyes
I remember a night we walked along the Seine
    Riding on the Metro

I remember a feeling coming over me
The soldier turned, then looked away
I remember hating you for loving me
    Riding on the Metro

    The Metro
  • Berlin bass player John Crawford wrote this song. It's about a man riding to Paris to visit his girlfriend. The Metro is the underground transportation system in Paris.
  • The line "thank you for loving me" is often misheard as "f--k you for loving me."
  • System Of A Down covered this in 2000. Their version was used on the soundtrack of Not Another Teen Movie.
  • Berlin couldn't get many radio stations to play this song, but they had better luck with MTV, which put the video in rotation thanks in no small part to lead singer Terri Nunn, who gave them an attractive female to show alongside their Toto and Huey Lewis and the News clips. MTV was still in its infancy, so record companies were stingy with budgets for the videos. Berlin shot the clips for "The Metro" and "Sex" back to back over two days. Nunn was not happy about shooting the subway scene over and over. Exhausted, she got frustrated and started crying, which was the footage they used. Her anger and tears were exactly what the director was looking for.

    Hoover Street Lyrics

I got that work, fuck Labor Day, just bought a gun
Fuck punching in, throwing rocks, no hopscotch
Bet my 9 milli hit the right spot
Bang, last night it was a dream
    This morning a fantasy
Back when the only fan I had was a fiend
Meet me by the Acura cause the cops like
To get help from the store camera, they always in my cornea
But it's cool I've been catching on to they formula
See I'm a real loc, my street sign I'll kill fo'
Then rewind my Indo, then unroll my rillo
The bad guy never once been a hoes hero
He get zero, I said nada
Bitch pass the cama (Uh, yeah)
How'd it feel to be a real nigga? (I'm a product of a real nigga)
La-la familia (Get confronted by a real nigga)
Fuck with one of my real niggas
(It's on like night fall, summertime gotta ball)
How'd it feel to be a real nigga?
(It's on like night fall, summertime gotta ball)
How'd it feel to be a real nigga (My whole life I've been a real nigga)
La-la familia (Get confronted by a real nigga)
Fuck with one of my real niggas
(It's on like night fall, summertime gotta ball)
How'd it feel to be a real nigga?

I done jumped off my ass
Hit the lick and barely pass but I quickly got to balling
    2012 ain't really happen
So I guess it's back to trapping, eyes open night to morning
    Had roaches in my cereal
My uncle stole my stereo, my grandma can't control him

But, every last one of us had a pistol in the room, nigga
    But, click-clack, pow-pow-pow (Boom, nigga)
But, meet Glock clock familia (Boom)

Find a nigga realer than me, my socks stink
Eat so much pussy that my mustache pink
Strapping, my pants seam, no need for a belt
Gangsta lean help, hoodie on backwards with the eyes cut out
My hate felt, my .45 elder, poetry's deep
I never fail ya, Schoolboy bust flame
    Orange-yellow, higher than Margiela's
Since a young nigga I admired the crack sellers, seen my uncle steal
From his mother, now that's the money that I'm talking 'bout
Think about it, the smoker ain't got shit and everyday he still get a hit
Whether jacking radio's or sucking dick
Sell his kids and chop his wrists and sealing his lips
'Cause he don't want the feds arresting his fix, didn't take much
To get me convinced, coincidence that I ain't fucking with work
Unless we rewind and answer my church
Times getting harder than my dick on a growth spurt
Around the same time all you niggas was on purp
My sober ass was snatching her purse, make the ice cream truck freeze
Give me the keys, extra Frito's, chili and cheese
Thew some Baby Lucas in his eyes before I leave
The cops'll never get the leak, grandma taught me well
And my uncle gun was the accessories, 211 sipping plus a robbery
This little Piggy went to market, this little Piggy carry chrome

I done jumped off my ass
Hit the lick and barely pass but I quickly got to balling
    2012 ain't really happen

    But, click-clack, pow-pow-pow (Boom, nigga)
But, meet Glock clock familia (Boom)

Grandma said she loved me, I told her I loved her more
She always got me things that we couldn't afford
The new J's and Tommy Hill in my drawers
Sega Genesis, Nintendo 64, see Golden Eye was away at war
We wasn't thinking of getting money then
Nor did I wonder why my uncle done sold his Benz
'Cause he been tripping now, he sweats a lot and slimming down
I also notice moms be locking doors when he around
But anyways, his wife done left him and now he living with us
My bike is missing, grandma light a hotter chick every month
My uncle's nuts, he used to give me Whisky to piss in cups
Knocking on the door telling me to hurry up, he in a rush
I gave it to him then got my ass whipped for doing it
Moms used to tell me like "Nigga, know who you dealing with"
Them was the good days 'til I was raised the older ways
Rat-Tone my niggas' brother showed me my first K
I was amazed, me and Floyd was in the back, he called us over like "Hey"
Yak, yak, yak, yak! We like "Damn, nigga"
Then again, yak, yak! We like "Damn, nigga"
Hearing him say 'cause turned us to a fan, nigga
Later on he got locked so know we're taking his fades
Continue the chapter from his life, we flipping that page
Gangbanging was a ritual and grandma would help
She should've never left her gun on the shelf
This little Piggy went to market, this little Piggy carry chrome

I done jumped off my ass
Hit the lick and barely pass but I quickly got to balling

    Hoover Street
  • This song finds Q detailing his loss of innocence growing up on Hoover Street. He spits rhymes about his grandma's gifts of Jordan shoes, Tommy Hilfiger underwear and video games, but also recounts his uncle stealing money out of his mom's purse and how he helped him cheat on a drug test.
  • Q also chronicles the negativity he was forced into upon joining the 52 Hoover Crips at the age of 12 when "every last one of us had a pistol in the room." As he recounted on "Gangsta," it was his grandma who showed him his first gun.

The Crips were founded in 1969 by Raymond Washington and Stanley Williams after they decided to unite their local gang members from the west and east sides of South Central Los Angeles in order to battle neighboring street gangs. Their sign, Cs formed with the thumb and forefinger of both hands, has become well known and today they are one of the largest and most violent associations of street gangs in the United States, with over 30,000 members.

    Du Hast
  • Although the German phrase does not translate to English, "Du hast" can mean "you have," but it can also mean "you hate." Therefore the song has two meanings. One being sort of "You hate me but still want to marry me" (the song is about marriage) and the other being "You want to marry me but I don't want to." (thanks, Oscar - Stockholm, Sweden)
  • There is another sort of double meaning here. If the line is read as "Tod der Scheide" it would be "until the death of the vagina" and not "until death, which would separate" ("Tod, der scheide"). The whole song is a play on German wedding vows (Wollen Sie einander lieben und achten und die Treue halten bis dass der Tod euch scheidet? - Do you want to love and respect each other and to remain faithful, until death separates you?). Instead of answering with "Ja," Till says "Nein," finally answering the question he said nothing to in the beginning. (thanks, Jason - Elko, NV)
  • "Hast" is a conjugation of the base form "haben" which means "to have." To hate, would be the verb "hassen" which would be conjugated as "Du hasst mich" (you hate me). Though they are similar they are not homophones in that the S sounds in "hasst" for "hate" would be stressed a little more then it would in "hast" for "have." This is confirmed when Till says, "Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab nights gesagt," which literally means "You have asked me and I have said nothing. "Hast" is used as the "haben" helper verb for the past participle "gefragt," of which its base form is "fragen," which means "to ask." (thanks, Scott - Vincennes, IN)
  • This song is played in the movie How High featuring rap artists Red Man and Method Man (thanks, Steve - Kitchener, Canada)
