On The Chin Lyrics

There's this boy I know whose afraid of the ocean
Never quite found love he drank the love potion
I'll be on the chain smoking in the basement
Shattered like the windows

All my life I was born to lead
Worry not just leave me be
I'll abide till the end
I'll take it On The Chin for you my friend

Find my bag of bones at the back of the station
Said make yourself at home
So I started day drinking
Till I believe in time after 7 8 or 9
You fall yourself to pieces

All my life I was born to lead
Worry not just leave me be
I'll abide till the end
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend

All my life I was born to lead
Worry not just leave me be I'll abide till the end
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend

I'll take it on the chin for you my friend
I'll take it on the chin for you my friend

On The Chin
  • Caleb Followill's lyrics for this whiskey-soaked Country number were inspired by the support he's got from his buddy, JD. He explained to Billboard magazine: "We've always been each other's best friends, because that's all we had. We were picking up and moving, every town we went to we knew we weren't gonna be there too long, so we knew, 'don't make too close of friends, and don't fall in love.' Being in Nashville, I finally had a buddy outside of the band, and he was just kind of always, no matter what you need, he's there. He's just a good guy. And that song kind of came at a time when I needed a friend, and I wrote it about him. And he's scared of the water. He's scared of sharks."
  • For bassist Jared Followill, the song can be interpreted as being about the mutual support the family members have for each other. He told HitFix : "So many of our songs can be interpreted in so many different ways. At the time you can actually write something and it can be completely abstract to you at the time and then a year later, something will happen to you and and you'll listen back and be like, 'Wow, that song sounds like it was written perfectly for the situation.' But that song, particularly, the way Caleb started writing those lyrics, it was for one of his friends, his buddy, JD. It's actually about that, then you hear it and it can mean so much. It can fit so many different situations. It can be for all of us together, it can be for our wives. I like songs that are open to interpretation."

I wanna walk that line a little crooked
And live my life a little on the rocks
    Laughing every time I fail
Not afraid to make a fool of myself
And keep on dancing when the music stops

'Cause I love being in love
It's the best kind of drug
Drunk on the holy lean on your shoulders
Sweet like a wine as it gets older
When I die I don't wanna go Sober
When I die I don't wanna go sober

You're like drinking from a never ending bottle
When I think it's gone it's always a little more left
Lay back with you and close my eyes
Let the big ol' world just spin on by
And saying your name with my last breath

'Cause I love being in love
It's the best kind of drug
Drunk on the holy lean on your shoulders
Sweet like a wine as it gets older
When I die I don't wanna go sober

  • This Lori McKenna , Hillary Lindsey and Liz Rose penned song finds Little Big Town singing about not being too serious and enjoying life to the very end. Released as the fourth single from Tornado, it was performed by the band on TV for the first time on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno during the program's September 26, 2013 episode.
  • Little Big Town's Kimberly Schlapman explained the song's meaning: "It's a great way of saying, first of all, we're all in beautiful relationships in our lives, and we don't want to live without that," she said. "It's a wonderful way of saying, 'I'm drunk on your love and I don't ever want to be without it."
  • Kimberly's first husband died of a heart attack in 2005 before finding happiness again with Stephen Schlapman. She told People magazine that the song hits especially close to home for her. "I have experienced what it means to lose the love of your life," she said. "And I've experience what it feels like to love again after great loss, so this song touches me so deeply in my heart."

Karen Fairchild, who is married to bandmate Jimi Westbrook added, "'Sober' reminds of me when Jimi and I first fell in love."
  • The song's Reid Long-directed music video was shot as Little Big Town crossed the country in 2013 when they served as the opening act on Keith Urban's Light the Fuse Tour.
  • Little Big Town's Jimi Westbrook described the song as "hazy sunshine." He explained that while listening to the tune, he thought of "the boardwalk… those places that have the piers that go out, and they've got the Ferris Wheels and people holding hands."

    Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? Lyrics

A thought burst in my head
And I need to tell you
It's news that I for thought
    Was it a dream that
    Happened long ago?
I think that I just forgot
Well it hasn't been the first time
And it sure does drive me mad

There's a boy who fogs his world and now he's getting lazy
There's no motivation and frustration makes him crazy
He makes a plan to take a stand but always ends up sitting.
Someone help him up or he's gonna end up quitting

    I shuffle through my mind
To see if I can find
    The words I left behind
Was it just a dream that happened long ago?
    Oh well...
    Never mind.

    Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?
  • Singer Billie Joe Armstrong remarked that in high school his teacher made him read The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger. This classic novel was very boring to him and he hated reading it (the idea of forcing a kid to read was repugnant to Billie Joe). When he became an adult he decided to read it again, as it was "Punk Rock." The narrator and main character of the novel is an outcast named Holden Caulfield - this song is about him.

The drink you spilt all over me
    'Lover's Spit' left on repeat
My mom and dad let me stay home
It drives you crazy, getting old

We can talk it so good
We can make it so divine
    We can talk it good
How you wish it would be all the time

The drink you spilt all over me
    'Lover's Spit' left on repeat
My mom and dad let me stay home
It drives you crazy, getting old

The drink you spilt all over me
    'Lover's Spit' left on repeat
My mom and dad let me stay home
It drives you crazy, getting old

    This dream isn't feeling sweet
We're reeling through the midnight streets
And I've never felt more alone
It feels so scary, getting old

We can talk it so good
We can make it so divine
    We can talk it good
How you wish it would be all the time

    This dream isn't feeling sweet
We're reeling through the midnight streets

  • Lorde penned this song about the apprehension that comes with getting older. "I'm in an industry where so much importance is placed on the fact that I'm 16," she told MTV News, "so that song is kind of about that."
  • Lorde explained to DJ Booker at AMP Radio that the song is about "getting old and rites of passage and being a teen and all that kind of stuff."

"It's cool because at the time I was quite stressed about this thing," she added. "And so I combated it by making this song super warm sounding and comforting sonically, which is nice."

    Must Get Out Lyrics

I've been the needle and the thread
Weaving figure eights and circles around your head
I try to laugh but cry instead
Patiently wait to hear the words you've never said

    Fumbling through your dresser drawer
Forgot what I was looking for
Try to guide me in the right direction
Making use of all this time
    Keeping everything inside
Close my eyes and listen to you cry

    [Chorus]
    I'm lifting you up
    I'm letting you down
    I'm dancing till dawn
    I'm fooling around
    I'm not giving up
    I'm making your love
This city's made us crazy and we Must Get Out

"This is not goodbye," she said,
"It's just time for me to rest my head."
She does not walk, she runs instead
Down these jagged streets and into my bed

When I was fumbling through your dresser drawer
Forgot what I was looking for
Try to guide me in the right direction
Making use of all this time
    Keeping everything inside
Close my eyes and listen to you cry

    [Chorus]

There's only so much I can do for you
After all of the things you've put me through

  • Maejor Ali is an American recording artist, songwriter and music producer from Detroit, who was formerly known as Bei Maejor. Amongst the artists he has produced are Keri Hilson, Sean Paul, and Iggy Azalea.
  • This club dance track is the third single from Maejor Ali's debut album, Something About B.M., which was released on Justin Bieber's, Schoolboy Records label. Having co-produced Bieber's Believe track "One Love," as well as working with him on the Lil Twist single "Twerk," the Detroit artist recruited the Canadian superstar to spit some bars on this song's second verse.
  • Bieber's verse about swiping someone else's girlfriend is a rare example of the Canadian Pop star rapping on a commercial release, rather than a mixtape track or various freestyles. The teen idol's appearance on the oral sex referencing track is also an attempt by Bieber to shed his tween image and cross over into an adult artist.
  • Juicy J spits the third verse where he references the drug Molly, which for those not in the know is MDNA, or Ecstasy. (It also conveniently rhymes with lolly).
  • Ali told The Boombox he likes to do odd match-ups like on this song. "The main thing I want to do with collaborations is bring people from different worlds together," he explained. "Kind of like Juicy and Justin, because I think that it's just fun for people to see name that they wouldn't expect to work together, and when they hear it, it somehow works."

All These Things That I've Done Lyrics

When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
    One more son
    If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on
I want to stand up, I want to let go
You know, you know - no you don't, you don't
I want to shine on in the hearts of men
I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand

Another head aches, another heart breaks
I am so much older than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no

    Help me out
Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out

And when there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
    These changes ain't changing me
The cold-hearted boy I used to be

Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out
    You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down

I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier

Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out
    You're gonna bring yourself down
    You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down

Over and again, last call for sin
While everyone's lost, the battle is won
With All These Things That I've Done
All these things that I've done
    (Time, truth, hearts)
    If you can hold on
    If you can hold on

All These Things That I've Done
  • This song is about growing up and moving on from the past, trying to make yourself a better person. It was written by lead singer Brandon Flowers when he was working as a bellman at the Gold Coast casino in Las Vegas. Since this was before cellphones, he would call his friends from work and leave song ideas on their answering machines if inspiration struck.
  • Like their hit "Mr. Brightside," this song has two videos. The first version has The Killers singing while walking down a London street. The second version was directed by Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn, and features a surreal, dreamlike sequence where The Killers, dressed as cowboys, are attacked by scantily clad female warriors armed with boomerangs (possibly inspired by the Russ Meyer film Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!).
  • The Killers often play this as the closer for their concerts, and the lyrics, "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" have become a sing-along moment. Lead singer Brandon Flowers told Rolling Stone about the line in 2009: "I can specifically remember being in Ronnie Vannucci's garage when I wrote it that. I don't know why I wrote it, but I know I'd been listening to a lot of U2's Joshua Tree and All That You Can't Leave Behind. Some people act like that line is nonsense, and I just don't understand that. If you listen to the song, it makes perfect sense. Our fans get it."
  • Brandon Flowers says that Lou Reed was a huge influence on this song, as the chorus and the "gotta help me out" part were Flowers imitating Reed's delivery. Three years after recording the song, the Killers teamed up with Reed on "Tranquilize."
  • The song features the Sweet Inspirations Gospel vocal group, who were founded by Cissy Houston, the mother of Whitney Houston. The Sweet Inspirations sang with Elvis Presley and provided the back up vocals for Van Morrison on his classic hit "Brown Eyed Girl" as well as scoring their own Hot 100 top 40 hit in 1968 with "Sweet Inspiration."
  • According to Flowers, this song's bass line is "a direct rip-off" from the 2002 David Bowie track "Slow Burn."

  • This soaring, bittersweet love song was released as the second single from Pearl Jam's tenth studio album Lightning Bolt. It finds Eddie Vedder crooning:

"I could take your hand and feel your breath.
Or feel that someday we'll be over."

"I remember when [Vedder] played that for us in his room right after he wrote the lyrics," recalled bassist Jeff Ament. "I think he had stayed up the night before writing."
  • Producer Brendan O'Brien, who has worked with Pearl Jam since their 1993 Vs. album, called this emotional ballad, "one of the best songs they've ever written."
  • Eddie Vedder talked to Rolling Stone about writing mellower music in his middle age, such as this song. The Pearl Jam frontman said there is more "sentimentality" in his lyrics nowadays, adding, "For years, it was playing word games and expressing those emotions, but doing it in such a way that was cryptic and where Mark Arm from Mudhoney would still have some modicum of respect for me. But nowadays, it's more like sitting down and writing a song, and whatever comes out, comes out."
  • The accompanying music video is a performance clip directed by photographer Danny Clinch, who also helmed the visual for "Mind Your Manners."
  • The ballad is one of several tracks on Lightning Bolt that reference mortality. Vedder told Rolling Stone the album has a lot of lyrics about the passing of life and ageing because "They say to write what you know. I think that's maybe one thing that we all know [laughs]. It's living while you're alive, and living to the day you die, and being cognizant of the end, and you might lead a more appreciative life, if that's part of your approach."
  • Guitarist Mike McCready told Billboard magazine that he wrote the music for the song after a Roger Waters concert for The Wall inspired him. "I wanted to write something that would have a Pink Floyd type feel," he said, "We recorded a demo of it [but Vedder] didn't put the lyrics on it until the second time we went back in... I heard them the night that he put them on there and they just brought me to tears. This is Ed at his best in my mind."

    All there really is
    The two of us
And we both know why we've come along
    Nothing to explain
    It's a part of us
To be found within a song

    What happened to our innocence
Did it go out of style?
    Along with our naivete?
    No longer a child
    Different eyes see different things
    Different hearts
    Beat on Different Strings
    But there are times
    For you and me
    When all such things agree

  • The song reminds us to choose our words carefully. Do not ruin what we have. Be kind, as we all see life just a bit differently, yet we're all the same.

  • The song finds Mollie King singing: "You take me back in time to 1999, we hear the DJ playing 'Hit Me Baby One More Time.'" Mollie has said in interviews that she was a Britney Spears addict when she was a teenager, so the line fits her like a glove.

    Motownphilly Lyrics

Boyz II Men, Boyz II Men,
Boyz II Men, Boyz II Men

    Motownphilly's back again
Doin' a little east coast fling
    Boyz II Men going off
Not too hard, not too soft

    It's long overdue but now
    Philly is slammin'
    Boyz II Men, ABC, BBD
    The east coast family

    Never skipped a beat, na
    While cooling on South street
Jet black Benz, plenty of friends
And all the Philly steaks you could eat

Back in school we used to dream about this everyday
    Could it really happen?
    Or do dreams fade away?
    Then we started singing them
    They said it sounded smooth
So we started a group and here we are
    Kickin' it just for you

    Motownphilly's back again
Doin' a little east coast fling
    Boyz II Men going off
Not too hard, not too soft

The spotlight is on us now
    Watch us do this
Da da, daaa da da, da da da da da da

Live and direct from Philly town
Rap and hype and we can get down
    We are ready to roll
So now the world will know that we were

Back in school we used to dream about this everyday
    Could it really happen?
    Or do dreams fade away?
    Then we started singing them
    They said it sounded smooth
So we started a group and here we are
    Kickin' it just for you

    Motownphilly's back again
Doin' a little east coast fling
    Boyz II Men going off
Not too hard, not too soft

Doom doom doom da da, doom doom doom da da
Da di da di da da, da da, daa daa daa
Doom doom doom da da, doom doom doom da da
Da di da di da da, da da, daa daa daa

    Motownphilly's back again
Doin' a little east coast fling
    Boyz II Men going off
Not too hard, not too soft

    Motownphilly
  • In the US, this was Boyz II Men's first single. It confused DJs for a few reasons: many didn't know how to pronounce the band name, and some thought the song was called Boyz II Men and the group was named Motownphilly, since the words "Boyz II Men" are in the lyrics and the chorus states, "Motownphilly back again."
  • The song tells of the group's dreams and how they were discovered - backstage at a New Edition concert where they met Michael Bivens, who was a former member of New Edition and was part of Bell Biv DeVoe, who were a very popular group at the time. Boyz II Men sang him an a cappella version of their song "Can You Stand the Rain," and Bivens, who was an aspiring record producer, got them signed to Motown Records. Bivens shows up on this song doing a rap interlude about the experience.
  • The lyrics talk about the "East Coast Family." "ABC" is the group Another Bad Creation and "BBD" is Bell Biv Devoe. ABC and BBD weren't around a few years later, but Boyz II Men were wildly successful.
  • The title implies that Boyz II Men were bringing the Motown sound to Philadelphia. Motown is a legendary record label from Detroit featuring black artists.
  • Boyz II Men became known for slow, harmonizing ballads, but this is a fast song that is not typical of their sound.
  • This was produced by the Philadelphia-born, Atlanta-based producer Dallas Austin, who co-wrote the track with Michael Bivens and Boyz II Men's Nathan Morris and Shawn Stockman. Austin also worked with Bell Biv DeVoe and would go on to write and produce for TLC.
  • The music video has the guys dancing and performing around Philadelphia sites, like a Temple University dorm room and in front of Geno's Steaks. Questlove, of the Philadelphia hip-hop group The Roots, makes a cameo appearance.
