From Time Lyrics

What's up? Been a minute since we kicked it, you've been caught up
With them bitches, I don't get it, you're a star love
You shouldn't have to deal with that, I'd never make you feel like that

'Cause I love me, I love me enough for the both of us
That's why you trust me, I know you've been through more than most of us
So what are you? What are you, what are you so afraid of?
Darling you, you give but you cannot take love

Yeah I needed to hear that shit, I hate when you're submissive
Passive aggressive when we're texting, I feel the distance
I look around the peers that surround me, these niggas tripping
I like when money makes a difference but don't make you different
Started realizing a couple places I can take it
I want to get back to when I was that kid in the basement
I want to take it deeper than money, pussy, vacation
And influence a generation that's lacking in patience
I've been dealing with my dad, speaking a lack of patience
Just me and my old man getting back to basics
We've been talking 'bout the future and time that we wasted
When he put that bottle down, girl that nigga's amazing
Well, fuck it, we had a couple Coronas
We might have rolled a white paper, just something to hold us
We even talked about you and our couple of moments
He said we should hash it out like a couple of grown ups
You a flower child, beautiful child, I'm in your zone
Looking like you came from the 70's on your own
My mother is 66 and her favorite line to hit me with is
Who the fuck wants to be 70 and alone?
Y'all don't even know what you want from love anymore
I search for something I'm missing and disappear when I'm bored
But girl, what qualities was I looking for before?
Who you settling for? Who better for you than the boy, hah?

I love me, I love me enough for the both of us
That's why you trust me, I know you been through more than most of us
So what are you? What are you, what are you so afraid of?
Darling you, you give but you cannot take love

Thinking 'bout Texas back when Porsche used to work at Treasures
Or further back then that, before I had the Houston leverage
When I got Summer a Michael Kors with my momma's debit
A weak attempt at flexing, I'll never forget it
'Cause that night I played her three songs
Then we talked about something we disagreed on
Then she started telling me how I'll never be as big as Trey Songz
Boy was she wrong, that was just negative energy for me to feed off
Now it's therapeutic blowing money in a galleria
Or Beverly Center Macy's where I discovered Bria
Landmarks to the 'muses that inspired the music
When I could tell it was sincere without trying to prove it
The one that I needed was Kourtney from Hooters on P Street
I've always been feeling like she was the piece to complete me
Now she engaged to be married, what's the rush on commitment?
Know we were going through some shit, name a couple that isn’t
Remember our talk in the parking lot at the Ritz
Girl I thought we had it all planned out, guess I fucked up the vision
Learning the true consequences of my selfish decisions
When you find out how I’m living I just hope I’m forgiven
It seems like you don’t want this love anymore
I’m acting out in the open it’s hard for you to ignore
But girl, what qualities was I looking for before?
Who you settling for, who better for you than the boy, huh?

I love me, I love me enough for the both of us
That's why you trust me, I know you been through more than most of us
So what are you? What are you, what are you so afraid of?
Darling you, you give but you cannot take love

"Been Bocka AKA Not Nice From Timegiene been a East Side ting,
Scarborough ting from time, G,
Been have up di ting dem from time, G.
So I don't know what's wrong with these lil waste mans out here eh,
Y'all need to know yourself."

From Time
  • Los Angeles singer-songwriter Jhené Aiko starts off the hook for this conversation between Drake and an old flame by singing: "I love me, I love me enough for the both of us." She explained to Rap Genius that it means: "I love myself enough to know what love actually is … I'm not concerned with you loving me or not…. that has nothing to do with the love I have for you. I am so full of love that I can love you and me… at the same damn time."
  • Drake mentions some girls from his past including Bria Myles from Macy's and how they inspired his rhymes:

"Beverly Center Macy's where I discovered Bria
Landmarks to the muses that inspired the music"

Drake previously spoke about Bria Myles on "Bria's Interlude," a track from his So Far Gone mixtape, where he gives more background to how they met.
  • The song's melancholic piano riff was played by Chilly Gonzales. Drake first met the Paris-based Canadian pianist and producer through Gonzales' father, who lives in the same building as the Toronto MC. Amongst his other contributions to Drizzy's oeuvre was playing the piano outro on "Marvin's Room."
  • Drake also raps about "Courtney from Hooters on Peachtree," whom he'd hoped would be "the piece to complete me" until she got engaged to someone else. It didn't take long after the song's release for people to track her down. Courtney Janell works at the Hooters restaurant on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia and has made appearances in several music videos, including The-Dream's "Trilogy," as well as popping up on BET's The Game.

Drake admitted to Vibe magazine that name-checking Courtney in this song was a mistake and a wake-up call. He said: "I've just gotten too big to do that. I never wanted to cause her any stress in her life, and I think she's such a good, wholehearted person. They made up this whole fake flyer online [about] hosting parties, which she doesn't. She's like the best girl ever. It was tough for me to watch that happen. I repeatedly kept apologizing. I didn't think it was that specific—she doesn't even work there anymore."

"I don't want to be looked at as a guy who exploits his relationships, but I feel it's okay because I'm not saying anything negative," Drake added. "I'm just telling the story and usually in their favor, usually saying I was the one that f---ed up. I don't know if I'm ever gonna continue with that formula, but it definitely gives people a more personable listen. And I feel like I've established these characters. Paris Morton is a character—I always check in with Paris, like 'this is happening, this is what it is.' I think people are intrigued, like 'Who is this girl that's your muse? Who is Bria? Why did she get an interlude?' With Courtney I just expected it to go a little better. It got blown out of proportion because she was too accessible. My apologies to her, formally."
  • Aiko told Radio.com about penning the hook for this Drake song: "I wanted to write something for him that he would like and the first thing I wrote was very personal," she said. "So when I got into the studio with him I laid down the hook, freestyled it. We had instant chemistry."

    Go Or Go Ahead Lyrics

Thank you for the bitter knowledge
Guardian angels who left me stranded
It was worth it, feeling abandoned
Makes one hardened but what has happened to love

You got me writing lyrics on postcards
Then in the evening looking at the stars
But the brightest of the planets is Mars

Then what has happened to love
So I will opt for the big white limo
    Vanity fairgrounds and rebel angels
You can't be trusted with feathers so hollow
Your heaven's inventions, steel eyed vampires of love

You see over me, I'll never know
What you have shown to other eyes
Go Or Go Ahead and surprise me
Say you've lead the way to a mirage

Go or go ahead and just try me
Nowhere's now here smelling of junipers
Fell off the hay bales, I'm over the rainbows

But oh Medusa kiss me and crucify
This unholy notion of the mythic power of love
Look in her eyes, look in her eyes

Forget about the ones that are crying
Look in her eyes, look in her eyes
Forget about the ones that are crying
    Go or go ahead

Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2 Lyrics

"Good God Almighty, like back in the old days
You know, years ago they had the A&R men to tell you what to play
How to play it and you know whether it's disco and rock
But um, we just went in the studio and we did it
We had champagne in the studio, of course, you know
Compliments of the company, and we just laid back and did it
So we hope you enjoy listening to this album half as much
As we enjoyed playing it for you, because we had a ball
Only real music is gonna last
All the other bullshit is here today and gone tomorrow"

    Cash rules everything around me
    C.R.E.A.M. get the money, dolla-dolla bill y'all

    After hours of Il Mulino
Or Sotto Sotto, just talkin' about women and vino
The contract like '91 Dan Marino
I swear this got Michael Rapino boostin' my ego
Overly focused, it's far from the time to rest now
Debates growing 'bout who they think is the best now
Took a while, got the jokers out of the deck now
I'm holdin' all the cards and niggas wanna play chess now
I hear you talkin', say it twice so I know you meant it
Fuck it, I don't even tint it, they should know who's in it
I'm authentic, real name, no gimmicks
No game, no scrimmage, I ain't playin' with you niggas at all
My classmates, they went on to be chartered accountants
Or work with their parents, but thinkin' back on how they treated me
My high school reunion might be worth an appearance
Make everybody have to go through security clearance
Tables turn, bridges burn, you live and learn
With the ink, I could murder word to my nigga Irv
Yeah, I swear shit just started clickin' dog
You know it's real when you are who you think you are

    Cash rules everything around me
    C.R.E.A.M. get the money, dolla-dolla bill y'all
    Cash rules everything around me
    C.R.E.A.M. get the money, dolla-dolla bill y'all

Uh, I had Benzes 'fore you had braces
The all black Maybach but I'm not a racist
Inside's whiter than Katy Perry's face is
    Yellow diamonds in my Jesús
I just might learn to speak Mandarin
Japanese for the yen that I'm handlin'
    International Hov, that's my handle
My saint's Sean Don, light a candle
El Gran Santo on the mantle
'Case y'all didn't know, I speak Spanish too
    Shoutout to Worldwide Wes
Everywhere we go we leave a worldwide mess
    Yes, still Roc La Familia
Says a lot about you if you not feelin' us
The homie said "Hov, there ain't many of us"
I told him less is more, nigga it's plenty of us

    Cash rules everything around me
    C.R.E.A.M. get the money, dolla-dolla bill y'all

    Cake, cake-cake, cake-cake, cake
    500 million, I got a pound cake
Niggas is frontin', that's upside-down cake
Get 'em a red nose, they clown cakes
They shoulda never let you 'round cake
Look at my neck, I got a carrot cake
Now here's the icing on the cake
    Cake, cake-cake, cake-cake
Uh I'm just gettin' started, oh yeah we got it bitch
I've done made more millionaires than the lotto did
Dame made millions, Bigg made millions
Ye made millions, Just made millions
Lyor made millions, Cam made millions
Beans tell you if he wasn't in his feelings
    I'm back in my bag
My eyes bloodshot but my jet don't lag
A pair of Jordan 3's tryna chase this cash
Gucci air bag just in case we crash
Uh, last night was mad trill
I'm fresh out of Advil, Jesus grab the wheel

Yeah uh, look, fuck all that happy to be here shit that y'all want me on
I'm the big homie, they still be tryna lil' bro me dog
Like I should fall in line, like I should alert niggas
When I'm 'bout to drop somethin' crazy and I say I'm the greatest of my generation
Like I should be dressin' different
Like I should be less aggressive and pessimistic
Like I should be way more nervous and less dismissive
Like I should be on my best behavior
And not talk my shit and do it major like the niggas who paved the way for us
Like I didn't study the game to the letter
And understand that I'm not doin' it the same, man, I'm doin' it better
Like I didn't make that clearer this year
Like I should feel, I don't know, guilty for saying that
They should put a couple more mirrors in here so I can stare at myself
These are usually just some thoughts that I would share with myself
    But I thought "Fuck it"
It's worth it to share 'em with someone else more than Paris for once
I text her from time to time, she a mom now
I guess sometimes life forces us to calm down
I told her she could live with me if she need to
    I got a compound but I think she's straight
Cause she supported since Hot Beats right before Wayne came
And got me out of the backroom where I was rapping with Jas over beats I shouldn't have in the hopes for the glory
He walked right past in the hallway 3 months later I'm his artist
He probably wouldn't remember that story
But that shit stick with me
Always couldn't believe when he called me
You never know, it could happen to you
And I just spent four Ferraris all on a brand new Bugatti
And did that shit cause it's something to do, yeah
I guess its just who I became dog
    Nothing was the same dog

    Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2
  • The outro to Drake's third album, Nothing Was The Same, features two penetrating verses from Jay Z on the first half of the song. The two superstar rappers previously joined forces on Hov's "Off That" from 2009's The Blueprint 3, and Drizzy's "Light Up" off 2010's Thank Me Later.
  • "Pound Cake" serves as a lead to the more celebratory "Paris Morton Music 2," where Drake asserts himself above all competition.

"Studied the game to the letter and I did it better
Like I'm supposed to feel guilty?"

Drake's frequent producer Noah "40" Shebib told Rolling Stone that "Paris Morton Music" is exciting for the Toronto MC for a rap standpoint as he's "just getting off bars and different flows, I played it for J. Cole, on some rap buddy-buddy s--t, and he was like, 'Damn!'"
  • This song's refrain is a scratched-up sample of the hook from Wu-Tang's 1994 single "C.R.E.A.M." (The title stands for "Cash Rules Everything Around Me.")
  • Paris Morton is the female equivalent of an Aston Martin, whom Drake originally rapped about on his cut, "Paris Morton Music." Drake's verse, where he recalls the time he spent with the black model, was also included on Rick Ross' single "Aston Martin Music."
  • The song opens with a 35 second speech sample of the late jazzman Jimmy Smith. It was taken by the producer/DJ duo Christian Rich from "Jimmy Smith Rap," a track from his 1982 Off the Top album. Jimmy Smith's estate filed a lawsuit in April 2014 claiming Drake never got permission to use the sample, despite liner notes indicating that it had been approved.
  • Speaking during a CRWN interview with Hip-Hop journalist Elliott Wilson, Drake revealed that "Pound Cake" was originally recorded when he was working with Beyoncé, and Jay-Z originally penned his two verses for Magna Carta… Holy Grail. For the first time in his career, Jay sent Drake the acapellas of his pair of rhymes to use, and then Bio-1da and Noah "40" Shebib got to work on the beat.
  • Hova took the opportunity to stunt on Drake when he spits at the beginning of his first verse, "I had Benzes before you had braces." "I think Jay still gets his first line off there," Drake joked to MTV News. "He always takes his opportunity to remind me that he is the true big homey."

"With that said, sometimes I'll set out and have something different in mind for Jay, like, 'I wanna be in the club with Hov on this album'...but we always just end up rapping," he added. "I love rapping with that guy so much that it's tough to go in any different direction."
  • Drake described the song as the follow up to "Light Up," which, at the time, found Jay dropping some knowledge on his "lil bro." "This feature is part 2 to 'Light Up,' said Drake to MTV News. "A lot of the songs on this album are updates and while he was working on Magna Carta I was able to work get that song [from him]."
  • This samples Ellie Goulding's Halcyon track, "Don't Say a Word." Boi-1da recalled: "My producer Jordan Evans brought the Ellie Goulding sample to me and I was like, 'this is perfect.' Nothing sounds better than Ellie Goulding singing in the background while Jay Z is rapping."
  • Drake originally planned to release two versions of Nothing Was the Same. The second version that we never got to hear was meant to play in the reverse order starting with "Pound Cake." "It was a cool, different listening experience," Drake told Vibe magazine. "We never brought it into fruition; I think it was some iTunes [issue] or something like that."

  • This tune finds Katy singing about that moment after a night spent clubbing when the music's over but you're helplessly overpowered by the voice in your head telling you to keep going:

"I need somebody to calm me down
    A little loving like Valium
I need somebody to knock me out."

Katy told Q magazine "The song is about going home, realizing you are a bit lonely and there is no one better to spend your time with. It's been quite a while since I had a cuddle."
  • Katy described the song's infectious house beat as "uncomfortable, something I like but I shouldn't."
  • The song was produced by London-based producer Geeneus, who worked with Katy on much of her 2011 debut On a Mission. This was one of seven tracks he manned the boards for Little Red. "There are quite a few [Geeneus] tracks on the album… He's definitely a massive part of it," Katy noted to Billboard magazine. "He's kind of like my Timbaland to Missy Elliott."

    Uh, wickey wild wild
    Wicky wicky wild
Wickey wild, wicky wicky wild Wild Wild West,
    Jim West, desperado, rough rider
    No you don't want nada
None of this, six gun in this, brotha runnin' this,
Buffalo soldier, look it's like I told ya
    Any damsel that's in distress
Be out of that dress when she meet Jim West
Rough neck so go check the law and abide
Watch your step , we'll flex and get a hole in your side
Swallow your pride, don't let your lip react,
You don't wanna see my hand where my hip be at,
With all of this, from the start of this,
Runnin' the game, James West tamin' the west so remember the name
    Now who ya gonna call?

    Not the G.B.'s

    Now who you gon' call?

    J double A G

If you have a riff with, people wanna bust, break out!
Before you get bum-rushed at the (Wild Wild West)
When I roll into the (Wild Wild West)
When I stroll into the (Wild Wild West)
When I bounce into the (Wild Wild West) Sisqo, Sisqo

We going straight to the Wild Wild West

Mad man lost his damn mind in the west
Loveless, kidnap a dime, nothin' less
Now I must put his behind to the test (Can you feel me?)
Then through the shadows, in the saddle, ready for battle
Bring all your boys in, here come the poison
Behind my back, all the riffin' ya did,
Front and center, now where ya lip at kid?
Who dat is? A mean brotha, bad for your health
Lookin' damn good though, if I could say it myself
Told me Loveless is a mad man, but I don't fear that
Got mad weapons too, ain't tryin' to hear that
Tryin' to bring down me, the champion
When y'all clowns gon' see that it can't be done
Understand me son, I'm the slickest they is,
I'm the quickest as they is, did I say I'm the slickest they is
So if you barking up the wrong tree we comin', don't be startin' nothin'

To any outlaw tryin' to draw, thinkin' you're bad,
Any draw on West best with a pen and a pad,
Don't even think about it, six gun, weighin' a ton,
10 paces and turn, just for fun, son,
    Up till sundown, rolling around,
See where the bad guys ought to be found and make 'em lay down,

    Wild Wild West
  • This is based on the 1987 rap song by Kool Moe Dee called "Wild Wild West," where he equated his New York lifestyle to the old west (he had a notorious feud with LL Cool J). Kool Moe Dee was brought in to rap on the chorus of this.
  • This samples Stevie Wonder's 1976 song "I Wish." Stevie Wonder appears in the video.
  • The R&B group Dru Hill sings on this.
  • DJ Jazzy Jeff did the record scratching. He and Smith were a team in the late '80s; smith became a successful actor and Jazzy Jeff did very well as a record producer.
  • This was written for the 1999 movie of the same name, which was a big-budget production starring Smith, Salma Hayek and Kenneth Branagh. The music video, directed by Paul Hunter, featured the stars of the movie playing their characters and ran 7 minutes long.

    Shot At The Night Lyrics

Once in a lifetime, the suffering of fools
To find our way home, to break in these palms
Once in a lifetime (Once in a lifetime)
    Once in a lifetime

Give me a Shot At The Night
Give me a moment, some kinda mysterious
Give me a shot at the night
Give me a moment, some kinda mysterious

Once in a lifetime, the breaking of the roof
To find that our home, has long been out grown
Draw me a life line, 'cause honey I got nothing to lose
Once in a lifetime (Once in a lifetime)
    Once in a lifetime

Give me a shot at the night
Give me a moment, some kinda mysterious
Give me a shot at the night
Give me a moment, some kinda mysterious
Give me a shot at the night

Look at my reflection in the mirror
Underneath the power of the light
Give me a shot at the night
Give me a shot at the night
Give me a shot at the night
I feel like I'm losing the fight

Give me a shot at the night
Give me a moment, some kinda mysterious
Give me a shot at the night

Give me a shot at the night
Give me a moment, some kinda mysterious
Give me a shot at the night
Give me a moment, some kinda mysterious
Give me a shot at the night
Give me a moment, some kinda mysterious
Give me a shot at the night

    Shot At The Night
  • This glitzy synth opera is one of two new tracks that feature on Direct Hits, The Killers' first greatest hits compilation. The other fresh cut, "Just Another Girl," was produced by longtime collaborator Stuart Price.
  • The song was produced by the French electronic musician Anthony Gonzalez, who records under the name of M83. Guitarist Dave Keuning told Radio.com that it was their label, Island Records, who suggested they work with M83. "There was a mutual thing like, 'Yeah we think he's good. We'll try him out,'" Keuning said. "It's something we finally agreed with our label on."
  • Speaking with NME, vocalist Brandon Flowers lauded Gonzalez for being a "real musician." "He's one of these new skool producers," said the singer. "He's a technical wizard, but you can't discount his musicality. A lot of people do, because of the involvement of computers, but he's a real musician, too."
  • The accompanying music video stars Australian actress Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows, In Time) as a hardworking hotel maid who hooks up with English actor Max Minghella (The Ides of March, The Social Network). The clip was shot on location in the band's home city of Las Vegas.
  • Flowers told NME: "It's a perfect fit for Anthony (Gonzalez). I was in the middle of touring when we recorded it and I think my voice sounds great, and that's something to take into consideration. If you haven't been keeping the chords lubed up it's not the best, so it's made me think about my time off and how I'll practice."

    Agnus Dei
  • The song's title and all of its lyrics are Latin. "Agnus Dei" is a movement from a mass (older composers write many of these) and literally means:
    (Lamb of God) Agnus Dei
(qui tollis peccata mundi) who takes away the sins of the world
(dona nobis pachem) grant us peace.
  • In this song, Wainwright is asking for clemency from people who attack him and his music.
  • This is essentially a Classical song. It is a setting of the text of one movement from a mass done by Wainwright.
  • This is in Bb minor, which is a very rare key.
  • Wainwright did the string arrangement himself.
  • The creaking at the beginning is actually a violin (though Wainwright agrees that it sounds like a fart). It was created by pressing down about a quarter of the way up a string and rubbing the string along the fingerboard while damping the string with the pinky.

    Summer Fling
  • This was the first single released by Melodic Chaotic, a collaboration between the teenage singer Willow Smith, best known for her hit tune "Whip My Hair," and DJ Fabrega. The song, which Smith sings in a faux British accent, showcases her change in musical direction. "Just for clarity, the word fling means something that's short lived," Willow Smith said during a performance of the track on the Queen Latifah Show. "And this song is dedicated to all the kids around the world whose summer is never long enough."

    Monterey Lyrics

    The people came and listened
Some of them came and played
Others gave flowers away, yes they did
    Down in Monterey
    Down in Monterey
Young Gods smiled upon the crowd
Their music being born of love
    Children danced night and day
    Religion was being born
    Down in Monterey

The birds and the airplane did fly
Oh, Ravi Shankars music made me cry
The Who exploded into fire and light
Hugh Masakela's music was black as night
The Grateful Dead blew everybodies mind
Jimi Hendrix baby, believe me, set the world on fire, yeah

His Majesty, Prince Jones, smiled as he moved among the crowd
Ten thousand electric guitars were grooving real loud, yeah
You want to find the truth in life
    Don't pass music by
and you know I would not lie, no I would not lie,
    No, I would not lie
    Down in Monterey

Three days of understanding of moving with one another
Even the cops grooved with us
    Do you believe me, yeah?
    Down in Monterey
I think that maybe I'm dreaming
    Monterey
    Down in monterey
Did you hear what I said?

  • This song is about the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. The lyrics contain references to many of the bands who played there including Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, The Who, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and Brian Jones (who didn't perform, but did introduce Hendrix to the crowd). The Animals had just broken up and re-formed with new members backing up lead singer Eric Burdon. In our 2010 interview, Burdon said: "It was the first gig we'd played with a new lineup. We had hardly had a chance to rehearse, but we made it though. I have great memories of being there. It was a wonderful weekend and I'll never forget it." (Read the full interview with Eric Burdon.)

Album: My Name Is My Name
    Released: 2013

    Nosetalgia Lyrics

20 plus years of selling Johnson & Johnson
I started out as a baby face monster
No wonder there's diaper rash on my conscience
My teething ring was numbed by the nonsense
Gem Star razor and a dinner plate
Arm and hammer and a mason jar, that's my dinner date
Then crack the window in the kitchen, let it ventilate
Cause I let it sizzle on the stove like a minute steak
Nigga, I was crack in the school zone
Two beepers on me, Starter jacket that was two toned
Four lockers, four different bitches got their mule on
Black Ferris Bueller, cutting school with his jewels on
Couldn't do wrong with a chest full of chains and a arm full of watches
What I sell for pain in the hood, I'm a doctor
Zhivago tried to fight the urge like Ivan Drago
If he dies he dies, like Doughboy to Tre
If he rides he rides, Throwing punches in the room
If he cries he cries, we don't drink away the pain
When a nigga die we add a link to the chain
Inscribe a nigga name in your flesh
We playing on a higher game of chess
Once you delegate his bills who's gone fuck his bitch the best?
A million megapixels of the Pyrex
Started on the scale digital, my only Timex
Nigga, this is timeless, simply cause it's honest
Pure as the fumes that be fucking with my sinus
Nigga this is Simon says, Simon red
Blood on your diamonds til you dying, dead, yah!

You better change what comes out your speaker

You wanna see a dead body?
Instrumentals from my mama's Christmas party
Troubles on my mind, I still smell crime
    My little brother crying
Smokers repeatedly buying my Sega Genesis
Either that or my auntie was stealing it
Hit the pipe and start feeling it
Oh wee, cut me some slack, weed never did that
This was different, geez, Louise please help me relax
Quantum physics could never show you the world I was in
    When I was ten
Back when nine ounces have got you ten
And nine times out of ten niggas don't pay attention
And when there's tension in the air nines come with extensions
My daddy dumped a quarter piece to a four and a half
Took a L, started selling soap fiends bubble bath
Broke his nails misusing his pinky to treat his nose
Shirt buttoned open, taco meat land on his gold
I said "daddy, one day I'mma get you right with 36 zips
1000 grams of cocaine then your name will be rich
Now you can rock it up or sell it soft as leather interior
Drop some ice cubes in it, Deebo on perimeter"
He said "son, how come you think you be my connect?"
Said "pops, your ass is washed up with all due respect"
He said "well nigga, then show me how it all makes sense"
Go figure, motherfucker, every verse is a brick
    Your son dope, nigga
Now reap what you sowed, nigga
Please reap what you sowed, nigga
I was born in '87, my grand daddy a legend
Now the same shit that y'all was smoking is my profession
    Let's get it

They must be on the dick of who?

  • This song finds Pusha T and Kendrick Lamar trading bars and perspectives about the drug world to a sparse Nottz Raw soundscape. Pusha broke down the two different angles to HipHopDX.com : "We gave two perspectives [on the song]. [Kendrick Lamar] was giving more, looking from the inside of his home and how his family and his crusade through the drug epidemic affected him. I was giving you the junior high, high school start, showing you what it was and where I was at."

The Velvet Underground - Heroin Lyrics and Youtube Music Videos

Album: The Velvet Underground & Nico
    Released: 1967

    Heroin Lyrics

    I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
And I tell you things aren't quite the same

When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

    I have made big decision
I'm gonna try to nullify my life
'Cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper's neck
When I'm closing in on death

You can't help me now, you guys
And all you sweet girls with all your sweet talk
You can all go take a walk
    And I guess I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I'd sailed the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
On a sailor's suit and cap

    Away from the big city
Where a man cannot be free
Of all the evils of this town
And of himself and those around
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life
Because a mainline into my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off than dead

Because when the smack begins to flow
    I really don't care anymore
About all the Jim-Jims in this town
And all the politicians making crazy sounds
And everybody putting everybody else down
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds

'Cause when the smack begins to flow
And I really don't care anymore
Ah, when that heroin is in my blood
And that blood is in my head
Then thank God that I'm as good as dead
And thank your God that I'm not aware
And thank God that I just don't care
    And I guess I just don't know
Oh, and I guess I just don't know

    Heroin
  • While there are many alternative interpretations of this song, it seems to be the case that Lou Reed was merely describing the effects of the drug, while neither condemning it nor condoning it. It might have been done merely for shock value, or because Reed liked gritty subjects, or as a dark poem of addiction; the beauty of this song is that it works on all of these levels, and many more, at the same time. In many of his songs, we have cases where Lou Reed kept the focus on providing an objective description of the topic without taking a moral stance on the matter.
For the record, Lou Reed spoke of the meaning of some of his songs in a 1971 interview with creem magazine: "I meant those songs to sort of exorcise the darkness, or the self-destructive element in me, and hoped other people would take them the same way. But when I saw how people were responding to them, it was disturbing. Because, like, people would come up and say, 'I shot up to 'Heroin,' things like that. For a while, I was even thinking that some of my songs might have contributed formatively to the consciousness of all these addictions and things going down with the kids today. But I don't think that anymore; it's really too awful a thing to consider."
  • Lou Reed wrote "Heroin" while attending Syracuse University - he would have been close to the age of 18. During his attendance, he also played guitar with several bar bands and hosted his own radio show on campus, in which he featured the works of various jazz and R&B legends. According to The Velvet Underground: An Illustrated History of a Walk on the Wild Side , Reed would amuse himself by using his electric guitar to blast screeches at the marching ROTC cadets on the green outside his dorm window, an act that impressed his new friend Sterling Morrison.
  • Also according to the above-mentioned biography, an original acetate recording of The Velvet Underground & Nico, including this song, was discovered at a yard sale in 2006. One Warren Hill, street-shopping along Chelsea Street in New York City, spotted the find. It was later verified to be the recording made at their first session at Scepter Studios under producer Norman Dolph. Hill bought the acetate for seventy-five cents. He later sold it on eBay for $25,000.
  • The unique screeching, droning viola sound in this and other early Velvet Underground songs was produced by bassist John Cale, a classically trained violist, playing an electric viola with 3 guitar strings, a cello bow and plenty of feedback. This preceded The Creation, who were the first to play a guitar with a cello bow in 1966. Few other bands exploited feedback and noise to the same degree as the Velvet Underground until the noise-rock scene developed in the 1980s.
  • The line, "And I feel just like Jesus' son" provided the title for Denis Johnson's short story collection Jesus' Son , which was made into a movie in 1999.
  • The song appears in the Oliver Stone movie The Doors.
  • Weezer's Brian Bell and Patrick Wilson covered this when they portrayed Lou Reed and John Cale, respectively, in the Edie Sedgwick biopic Factory Girl (2006).
