Black Cat Bone

The "Black Cat Bone" is a blues totem. Black cats are considered a sign of bad luck in some cultures, but in the Hoodoo world adhered to by many African-American residents of the American South at the time, the bone of a black cat had special powers, typically allowing its holder to attain a special woman who resists his tangible charms. In this song, Winter is looking for the bone to solve his lady problems.

A Texas blues musician named Hop Wilson wrote a song called "My Woman Has A Black Cat Bone" sometime in the '50s; this tune has been covered by Albert Collins, Robert Cray and many other artists. Lightnin' Hopkins also had a song called "Black Cat Bone," and many famous bluesmen have incorporated the phrase into their lyrics: Muddy Waters did it in "Hoochie Coochie Man" ("I got a black cat bone and I got a mojo"), and Blind Lemon Jefferson in "Broke and Hungry" ("I believe my good gal have found my black cat bone"), and Bo Diddley in his eponymous song ("Mojo come to my house, ya black cat bone").

Out Of The Picture

The Robins were one of California's first Doo Wop groups. They formed when Ty Terrell Leonard and the Richards brothers Billy and Roy met at Alameda High School in San Francisco in 1945, and formed the "A-Sharp Trio." The trio came to Hollywood a year later, and in 1947 they were joined by Bobby Nunn. Grady Chapman joined the group as lead singer and fifth member in 1953. In March 1954, Carl Gardner was the substitute for Grady (who was sent to jail for a while) and Carl was later featured as sixth singer in the group. In 1955, Chapman created The Coasters.

This song was produced in Los Angeles over 5 sessions during 1956 and early 1957.

In 2004, the French director Francois Vogel made the "HP + You" campaign; at Francois II, Vogel is seen holding white photo frames up to his face as each captures a snapshot, while he lip synchs the song "Out of the Picture" by The Robins.

Very Busy People

The Limousines could have happened only in the Internet era: their members Giovanni Giusti and Eric Victorino were introduced online, and made their first music before ever meeting face-to-face. While they use modern technology to their advantage, they also wonder if it is having a negative effect on society in some ways. When we asked Victorino , who writes their lyrics and fronts the duo, about this song, he replied: "It used to be that the only people who had to deal with a constant flow of information all day and all night were people like Air Traffic Controllers - very high stress lifestyle. But now we're all in our own little control towers, doing all this work with this information - none of it is as important as it seems. None of it is as urgent as we think it is. But we feel important when we feel busy, don't we?"

After their song "New Year's Resolution" garnered airplay on the San Francisco radio station Live 105, The Limousines signed a deal with Universal Republic to release "Very Busy People" as a single. The song was issued in 2009 and got some national attention. The record company then asked the duo to record a full-length album, and gave them just two months to do it. Eric and Gio knew they couldn't deliver a quality album in such a short timeframe, so they left the label and released their debut Get Sharp on their own in 2010. "We knew the money would be gone pretty quick, but that s--tty album would be there forever," Eric said.

The Limousines signed with Dangerbird Records in 2011, but left when the label fell into turmoil. Their next release, the 2013 album Hush, was funded by a Kickstarter campaign and released independently.

GRB stands for "Gamma-Ray Burst," and GRB 09042 is a specific burst that was discovered by University of Exeter astrophysicists in 2009.

The Limousines lead singer/lyricist Eric Victorino used the celestial event as a metaphor for desolation. "Sometimes giving up feels like the only option," he told us. "GRB09042 is the furthest point of light that we can see. It's completely out if reach."

Hush was the second Limousines album, and it saw the band taking a far more introspective approach, as they had gone through some dark times leading up to it: the duo lost some friends and family members, and Victorino was committed to a psychiatric facility. "Hush came from an emotional place," he said. "Get Sharp [their first album] was written from a snarky kind of sarcastic angle with almost no emotional investment."

The duo's instrumentalist Giovanni Giusti handles lead vocals on this song. The higher voice that comes in midway through is that of their frontman Eric Victorino.

Guitarist Jake Puget came to Havok with the the majority of the body of the song's music written. The vocalist recalled to Loudwire : "He came and sat down with me and I read the top line to the verse and we just weren't happy with the chorus and we kept putting it aside and coming back to it and altering the chorus. Jade would go home sometimes and three weeks later he'd come back and be like, 'Oh, I worked on the chorus again' and there's almost this new part and we ended up where we were at but it took us awhile for us to realize that."

The cinematic video was directed by Surround and shot in black and white with gray tones. The clip took just one day to film, and was shot at Highland Park, Los Angeles.

This song features a piano part, which is unusual for AFI but not unique (The Sing The Sorrow track, "Silver And Cold" also includes some tinkering of the ivories). Guitarist Jade Puget explained to Noisecreep : "On the verse of that song which is a big part of the song there's no guitar at all, it's just piano and the sound in the background is actually a distorted brass, like a brass section. I was trying to create some layers that are a little different, left of center from what we're doing and take my guitar completely out it. It lends to spaciousness and really creates a bed for his vocal to sit where it's not like, cause guitars can take up a lot of space, so he has a lot of space to do that dynamic vocal."

Daydreamin'

During a June 2012 video interview, Ariana described her debut album as being "'50s, '60s Doo-Wop-inspired." Later in the year, she met up with her label and expressed dissatisfaction with the direction the album was taking. Ariana expressed a desire instead to make the type of '90s urban Pop music she grew up listening to. Most of the previously finished songs for the record were scrapped, except for this song, "Tattooed Heart" and "Honeymoon Avenue," which were all reworked from their original Doo-Wop sound to one with a turn of the century Pop feel.

The album was originally titled after this song but it was renamed Yours Truly after Ariana decided that the LP felt like a love letter she wanted to sign.

This power ballad was released as the lead single and title track from Céline Dion's eleventh English-language studio album. The song was premiered live by Dion at her Une seule fois show in Las Vegas on July 27, 2013.

The song was written by Australian singer-songwriter Sia Furler, whose credits include Rihanna's "Diamonds," David Guetta's "Titanium" and Flo Rida's "Wild Ones." It was Celine Dion's first single release since "My Love" in 2008. "I've been gone for six years," she told Billboard magazine. "There's a time where you think, 'Do you think people will write songs for me?'"

"I'm at the mercy of the songs because I don't write my material," Dion added. But I could not believe what I was hearing. I'm not trying to reinvent myself, I don't want people to think, 'This is a brand new Celine,' but I am at a place in my career where I'm 45, I'm at the peak of my life, and I've never felt like this before. I want to have a good time."

Dion performed this song for the first time on September 6, 2013 on the TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live. When Dion sat down for her interview, Kimmel engaged her in a discussion about whether it really was possible to love someone back to life, with Kimmel insisting it was impossible. Dion insisted that you could, explaining that someone in a coma could conceivably be loved back to life with prayers.

Dion was clearly excited about this recording. The Canadian singer is seen falling off a couch in a recording studio as she listens to the song after laying down her vocals. "When I hear something that comes from me that makes me fall down off my chair, it's not often," said Dion. "When the young generation offers me a song - Sia - that writes for Rihanna, that my (teenage) kid thought it was a mistake that she sent me that song. 'That's not true! That's not possible! Diamonds From Sierra Leone

This song is about Roc-A-Fella records, which is West's label. The chorus, "Throw your diamonds in the sky" refers to the Roc-A-Fella hand signal, which is the shape of a diamond. West makes it clear, however, that real diamonds are a different story, as many of them are mined using child slave labor in African nations like Sierra Leone. His aim was to show that the profits from these illicit "blood diamonds" bankroll civil wars in these African nations.

This is based on the song "Diamonds Are Forever" by Shirley Bassey. Written by John Barry and Don Black, "Diamonds Are Forever" is the theme to the James Bond movie of the same name released in 1971.

This won the 2006 Grammy for Best Rap Song. Late Registration also won for Best Rap Album, beating out Common's Be, which West also worked on.

Movie director Michel Gondry played live drums on this song. The Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind filmmaker happened to be in the studio on a day when producer Jon Brion was setting up a drum kit. Gondry also directed the live-action video for another Late Registration track, "Heard 'Em Say."

West traveled to Prague to shoot the music video with his go-to director: Hype Williams. "I'm really into architecture and art, period," West told MTV News of filming in the Czech Republic capital. "You get the sculptures, the cathedrals, the stone floors. It gives you a timeless feel, and we're gonna shoot it in black and white. That look represented the music in 'Diamonds.'"

The clip shows scenes of wealthy Europeans shopping for jewelry while African children labor in mines to provide them with diamonds. It closes with the message, "Please purchase conflict-free diamonds."
