Rent Lyrics

You dress me up, I'm your puppet
You buy me things, I love it
You bring me food, I need it
You give me love, I feed it

And look at the two of us in sympathy
With everything we see
I never want anything, it's easy
You buy whatever I need

But look at my hopes, look at my dreams
The currency we've spent
I love you, you pay my Rent
I love you, you pay my rent

You phone me in the evening on hearsay
And bought me caviar
You took me to a restaurant off Broadway
To tell me who you are

We never-ever argue, we never calculate
The currency we've spent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent

I'm your puppet
I love it

And look at the two of us in sympathy
And sometimes ecstasy
Words mean so little, and money less
When you're lying next to me

But look at my hopes, look at my dreams
The currency we've spent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent

Look at my hopes, look at my dreams
The currency we've spent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent

Look at my hopes, look at my dreams
The currency we've spent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent (It's easy, it's so easy)
You pay my rent (It's easy, it's so easy)
You pay my rent (It's easy, it's so easy)
I love you (It's easy, it's so easy)
(It's easy, it's so easy)
(It's easy, it's so easy)
(It's easy, it's so easy)
(It's easy, it's so easy)
(It's easy, it's so easy)

Rent
  • This ballad deals with a financially one-sided relationship sung from the perspective of a kept woman. Vocalist Neil Tennant told Mojo magazine August 2013: "I come from an era when people didn't talk about sex at home, where a lot of things were unsaid. So you sort of had to read between the lines, to the extent that one could even, oneself, not know what the songs were about. 'Rent's' funny - I was imagining a woman who was being kept by a politician, but when people would ask, what is the missing word between 'I love you' and 'you pay my rent?', I'd say 'I don't know, really.' The title came about because we used to like the idea of provocative titles. That was a punk thing."
  • The Pet Shop Boys dismissed this at the time as a "mercenary love song."
  • The video for the song was directed by Derek Jarman. It features two intercut storylines - one filmed in black and white and the other in color. The color part features Liverpool actress Margi Clarke (Letter to Brezhnev) as the partner of a wealthy man, who is played by Alexander Thynn, 7th Marquess of Bath. Neil Tennant is their chauffeur.
  • The title implies the lot of a rent boy (a male prostitute), and despite Liza Minelli covering it in 1989, it wasn't until the sleeve notes to the reissue of Actually that Neil Tennant confirmed that this song was written from a female perspective.

    The Queen Is Dead Lyrics

Oh! Take me back to dear old Blighty,
Put me on the train for London Town,
    Take me anywhere,
    Drop me anywhere,
    Liverpool, Leeds or Birmingham
    But I don't care,
I should like to see my...

    I don't bless them
Farewell to this land's cheerless marshes
Hemmed in like a boar between arches
Her very Lowness with a head in a sling
I'm truly sorry - but it sounds like a wonderful thing

I said Charles, don't you ever crave
To appear on the front of the Daily Mail
Dressed in your Mother's bridal veil?
    Oh...
And so, I checked all the registered historical facts
And I was shocked into shame to discover
How I'm the eighteenth pale descendant
Of some old queen or other

Oh, has the world changed, or have I changed?
Oh has the world changed, or have I changed?

Some nine year old tough who peddles drugs
    I swear to God
I swear : I never even knew what drugs were
    Oh...
So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
    And talk about precious things
But when you're tied to your Mother's apron
    No-one talks about castration
    Oh...

We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
    And talk about precious things
Like love and law and poverty
Oh, these are the things that kill me

We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
    And talk about precious things
But the rain that flattens my hair...
Oh, these are the things that kill me

All their lies about make-up and long hair, are still there

Past the pub who saps your body
And the church who'll snatch your money
    The Queen Is Dead, boys
And it's so lonely on a limb
Past the pub that wrecks your body
And the church - all they want is your money
    The Queen is dead, boys
And it's so lonely on a limb

Life is very long, when you're lonely
Life is very long, when you're lonely
Life is very long, when you're lonely
Life is very long, when you're lonely

    The Queen Is Dead
  • This song shows Morrissey's unhappiness with the British monarchy. He makes reference to the Queen with her head in a sling. It's not quite as vengeful as "God Save The Queen," but still a scathing attack on the royals.

Morrissey explained to NME in 1986: "I didn't want to attack the monarchy in a sort of beer monster way but I find as time goes by this happiness we had slowly slips away and is replaced by something that is wholly grey and wholly saddening. The very idea of the monarchy and the Queen of England is being reinforced and made to seem more useful than it really is. The whole things seems like a joke. A hideous joke."
  • In the line "So I checked in the historical facts, and I was shocked into discover, I was the 18th pale decedent of some old queen or other," Queen is also an old English word for homosexual.
  • The album's cover image was designed by Morrissey himself and features French actor Alain Delon from the 1964 film L'Insoumis.
  • The music for this song emerged from a pounding 13-minute jam session with Marr capturing accidental feedback from his wah-wah pedal. "I held my breath for 10 minutes while I was doing it," he recalled to NMEJune 18, 2011. "Conceptually I was trying to do that Detroit thing, the MC5 and garage rock and I just got it wrong - but if you're lucky that stuff comes out sounding like yourself anyway."
  • The sample that opens the song features music hall veteran Cicely Courtneidge singing the World War I standard "Take Me Back To Dear Old Blighty," in Bryan Forbes' 1962 British film The L-Shaped Room.
  • The album title was taken from a section of American author Hubert Selby's 1964 novel, Last Exit To Brooklyn, which caused much controversy due to its frank portrayals of rape, drug use, homosexuality, transvestism and domestic violence.
  • At one point Morrissey sings, "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano." We got that chance on The Smiths next album Strangeways, Here We Come when Morrissey played piano on the song "Death of a Disco Dancer."
  • This song, "Panic" and "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" formed part of a 13-minute short film, directed by the avant-garde filmmaker, Derek Jarman, in 1986. The Queen Is Dead, which compromises of evocative, nightmarish and fast-paced collages of urban decay, is available to view on YouTube .
  • Bassist Andy Rourke recalled the recording of the song to Mojo magazine: "When it started it was a schizophrenic kind of funky, punky instrumental that didn't really go anywhere. I think on the day we recorded it, Johnny had just got a new wah wah pedal so he was kind of putting it through its paces and we went back to this old rift with a different approach. Mike struck up this great drum beat and... it just kind of happened. Johnny's said it one of the best bass lines ever, and it is pretty good. I was dictating, in my most polite way, the groove."

Before I Fall To Pieces Lyrics

Oh, one more drink and then I'll go
But there's one more thing I've got to know
Does he take you places that I don't?
And what happened to the story that we wrote?

You just say you don't know, you don't know
Oh no, you don't know, you don't know, woo!

Oh, let's just get this whole thing straight
I don't wanna kidnap the truth and negotiate
Or miss the point that they met you
Just wanna hear you say something that you believe to be true

But you say you don't know, you don't know
You just say you don't know, you don't know
What it feels like, what it feels like

And so I'll go Before I Fall To Pieces
Yes, I'll go before I fall to pieces

Now I'm just waiting for something that might never come
If it's a million to one shot, I'll make sure I'm one
Seems that nothing is safe except the truth turns to lies
Never figured it out, I found out why

So I'll go, yes I'll go
Yes I'll go, yes I'll go
Oh baby I'll go, oh yes I'll go
Yes I'll go, oh yes I'll go

    Before I fall to pieces
    Before I fall to pieces
Yes I'll go before I fall to pieces

  • The song's music video features Scorpio (aka Nikki Diamond) from TV's Gladiators and the Australian actor Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential, Iron Man 3) as the blue superhero. Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell recalled to NME of the latter: "He's such a good actor that he just pulled it off – we got Guy Pearce in the video and nobody recognised him! He's this old Superman and he looks too convincing with his rotten teeth. No one knew it was Guy Pearce."

    I'm glad you're home
Now did you really miss me?
I guess you did by the look in your eye
(Look in your eye, look in your eye)
    Well lay back and relax
While I put away the dishes (put away the dishes)
Then you and me can rock a bell

You can Ring My Bell, ring my bell
You can ring my bell, ring my bell
You can ring my bell, ring my bell
You can ring my bell, ring my bell

    The night is young
    And full of possibilities
Well, come on and let yourself be free, yeah
My love for you (love for you, love for you)
    So long I've been savin'
Tonight was made for me and you

You can ring my bell, ring my bell
    (Ring my bell, ding-dong-ding)

    Ring My Bell
  • This was one of first hit songs to feature a synthesized drum. The hook was the synthesized drum of Carl Marsh, which produced a sound that became copied by many other disco records.
  • This was written by Ward's producer Frederick Knight, who is known for his 1972 hit "I've Been Lonely For So Long." He originally intended it for 11-year-old Stacy Lattishaw, but when she signed with a different label, Ward was asked to sing it instead. She disliked the song and only recorded it as Frederick Knight insisted they needed another dance number on the album.
  • Ward started out as a Memphis gospel singer. This was her only hit.
  • This song required three studios, four engineers, two remixers and a 'midnight mix by Richie Rivera' as well as the production of Frederick Knight to produce its innovative sound. Knight also provided backing vocals.
  • DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) recorded a rap version in 1991 that made #20 US.
  • Rapper Snoop Dogg disclosed to Clash magazine that this was the first record that he ever bought.

Cuddly Toy (Feel For Me) Lyrics

I know you've heard so many people say
I've got a different girl in every town
But there must be somebody telling lies
And spreading rumours, spreading rumours all around
Because my only joy, is a cuddly toy
Waiting for me when I get home
And what I need is a girl like you
    To call my very own
    (chorus)
So you've got to feel for me baby
So you've got to feel for me baby
So you've got to feel for me baby
    And give me some love
Well I don't pour out my heart like this, to everyone
    And anyone that I meet
And I know it ain't the wine 'cause I feel just fine,
Can't you see baby, I'm still on my feet
    (bridge)
A cuddly toy is my only joy
Waiting for me when I get home
And what I need is a girl like you
    To call my very own

    Cuddly Toy (Feel For Me)
  • This was the first hit single released by Roachford, who are a British band fronted by Andrew Roachford. The song was first released in June 1988, with the title of "Cuddly Toy," peaking at #61 on the UK singles chart. It was re-issued nine months later, this time peaking at #4. Released in the US under the title of "Cuddly Toy (Feel for Me)," the tune peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1989.
  • The film Alan Partridge Alpha Papa starts off with Alan, played by Steve Coogan, miming the song in his car. Coogan explained to NME why they chose this track. "It's one of those songs that's slightly forgotten but still kind of catchy. We don't use bad music for Alan, we just use music that's slightly obscure."
  • This is an entirely different song to the Monkees 1969 cut, "Cuddly Toy."

All My Best Friends Are Metalheads
  • One of the most popular songs by the Florida Ska-Rock band Less Than Jake, this song is about how it's unwise to judge people for the color of their skin or their religion or how they dress - it's much better to get to know someone instead of making assumptions. The "metalheads" aren't mentioned in the lyrics, but are an example of a group that is often harshly judged and widely misunderstood.
  • When we spoke with Less Than Jake lead singer Chris Demakes in 2011, we asked him about how he felt about modern metal bands, and if the music carried the same message it did when he listened to it growing up. Said Chris: "I can appreciate some of the players and some of the songs. My issue with it is that I'm old enough - I'm 37 - I'm old enough to have witnessed bands in the '80s doing that better. I've already experienced something that was new and refreshing to me at that age, that when I hear it now it just sounds regurgitated and not as good. This, in fact, might be better than what it used to be. But I've already heard this song and dance before."
  • "All My Best Friends Are Metalheads" is used in Digimon: The Movie, and is also featured on the soundtrack CD of the film which was released September 19, 2000.

Growing up, when I dreamed about doing this for a living, it wasn't about being rich or playing sold-out arenas. I had this mental picture about wanting to be on the bus and live a lifestyle. It was more about the lifestyle. I just wanted to ride the bus. That kind of coincides with a lot of these songs."

    Tears on Tape
  • This is the title track to HIM's eighth studio album. In our interview with group's lead singer/songwriter Ville Valo , he explained: "It's my tribute to the music I grew up listening to. It mentions church bells tolling and thunder roaring, and that's a dedication to the first Black Sabbath album and so forth. There are two or three different stories going on at the same time. In one, it describes music verbally, and my favorite songs. And on another level it's a bit more of an emotional journey and relationship-related little ditty."
  • You might detect and '80s sound to this one, which can be attributed to Ville Valo's love of music from that decade - he cites Depeche Mode and Nick Cave as two of his favorites from the era.

Valo came up with the basic track for this song when he was working on some Electronic side projects that never came to fruition. When it came time to work on the Tears On Tape album, he brought out what he had of the song and gave it the HIM treatment. "I had that melody and I was playing around with that for about eight months," he told us. "Then since we started working on new stuff with HIM, I thought, 'Let's try it out. It's a bit different than the rest of the songs.'"

    Mary's Boy Child Lyrics

    Long time ago in Bethlehem,
    So the Holy Bible say,
    Mary's Boy Child, Jesus Christ,
    Was born on Christmas day,
Hark, now hear the angels sing,
    A newborn King today,
    And man will live forevermore,
    Because of Christmas day.
    Trumpets sound and angels sing,
    Listen to what they say,
    That Man will live forevermore,
    Because of Christmas day.

    (verse 1)
While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
They saw a bright new shining star,
    They heard a choir sing,
The music seemed to come from afar,

    (verse 2)
Now, Joseph and his wife, Mary,
    Come to bethlehem that night,
They found no place to bear her child,
Not a single room was in sight.

    (verse 3)
By and by, they find a little nook,
    In a stable all forlorn,
And in a manger cold and dark,
    Mary's litlle Boy was born!

    Mary's Boy Child
  • Originally, this was a West Indian song written by Jester Hairston, a Julliard-trained songwriter who would later popularize the spiritual "Amen" during the civil rights movement in the United States. The song tells the story of the birth of Jesus.
  • When this reached #1, Harry Belafonte became the first black male to have a #1 in the UK. It was the first ever song to sell 1 million copies in the UK, and the first ever British #1 record to have a playing time of more than four minutes (4:12).
  • This stayed at #1 in the UK for 7 weeks before becoming the only song to drop from #1 straight out of Top 10 the following week. After Christmas it tumbled from #1 to #12. The song returned to the charts the next 2 years at Christmas, going to #10 in 1958 and #30 in 1959.
  • During the Christmas season of 1978, Boney M. returned the song to the top of the British charts with the melody "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord." According to Boney M. member Marcia Barrett in the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, "I always thought of Boney M. as being put together by a spiritual force and we liked doing spiritual songs. When we did Mary's Boy Child, we added a bit spontaneously at the end. As it worked, we left it in." Hence the record was listed as a medley of "Mary's Boy Child" and "Oh My Lord."
  • At the end of 2007, Boney M's medley of this song and "Oh My Lord" was the 10th top selling single of all time in the UK. In addition Boney M's version of "River's Of Babylon" was at that date the fifth top selling single of all time in the UK, making them the only act to have 2 singles in the UK all-time Top 10 best sellers list.

    Drug stabbing time
Well I got working on the Ford line
A paying off the big fine
    Drug stabbin' time

    Drug stabbin' time
    Is from nine to nine
    Nobody wants a user
    Nobody needs a loser
So kick him out that door
An' don't answer it no more

    Drug stabbin' time
    It's a Greenwich Mean Time
Your friends all hate each other you think
    You've got another
    But who's at the door?
    Don't answer it no more

    Drug stabbin' time
    In a bedroom crime
There's a tape recording on a telephone line
An' it's ringin' from the floor
So don't answer it no more

Now I was lying in my room
It was raining drugs all afternoon
I hear this car pull up outside
Comes to a stop like, skreeee

    Someone's in a hurry
    'N someone better worry
'Cos these four guys all had on their feet
A pair of black shoes shining and neat
    I thinks

    Black shoes on
    No that's bad news
Here they come charging up the stairs alright
    Sonny just tell us where

    Drug stabbin' time
    Don't ask me mate

    Drug-Stabbing Time
  • "Drug-Stabbing Time" was first demoed at the Clash's rehearsal space, Rehearsal Rehearsals, in January 1978 and so was one of the first songs written for second album Give 'Em Enough Rope.
  • The lyrics written by singer Joe Strummer are fiercely anti-drugs, and describe in great detail the paranoia they can induce - not just from usage, but from the fear of getting caught, as the subject of the song does in an elaborate police sting ("I hear this car pull up outside, Comes to a stop like, skreeee", "Blackshoes on, No that's bad news, Here they come charging up the stairs alright, Sonny just tell us where").

It's quite possible that Strummer had seen early rushes of the film Rude Boy, a film about a fictional roadie for The Clash and featuring lots of live Clash footage from 1977-79, where a subplot involves a drug bust. Or it's possible he was talking from personal experience - what makes the anti-drugs message ("Nobody wants a user, nobody needs a loser") hugely ironic is that members of the group, mainly guitarist Mick Jones, were heavily involved in drug usage at the time. Critic Marcus Gray noted that this fact serves "to rob it of much comedy value."
  • The song was debuted live on the On Parole tour in June 1978, and remained in the live set into 1979, which is better than most of the Give 'Em Enough Rope non-single tracks. The song was dropped after the Pearl Harbour tour, although it was revived for one last performance in Monterey in September 1979.

    Let There Be Love Lyrics

Who kicked a hole in the sky
So the heavens would cry over me?
Who stole the soul from the sun
In a world come undone at the seams?

    Let There Be Love
    Let there be love...

I hope the weather is calm
As you sail up your heavenly stream
    Suspended clear in the sky
Are the words that we sing in our dreams

    Let there be love
Let there be love... [Repeat: x 2]

    (Noel)

    Come on baby blue
    Shake up your tired eyes
The world is waiting for you
    May all your dreaming
    Fill the empty sky

But if it makes you happy
    Keep on clapping
Just remember I'll be by your side
And if you don't let go
    It's gonna pass you by...

Who kicked a hole in the sky
So the heavens would cry over me?
Who stole the soul from the sun
In a world come undone at the seams?

    Let there be love
Let there be love... [Repeat: x 4]
