Don't Phunk With My Heart Lyrics

No, no, no, no, Don't Phunk With My Heart
(Yeah)
No, no, no, no, don't phunk with my heart

I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (in love, baby)
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (in love, baby)

Girl, you know you got me, got me
With your pistol shot me, shot me
And I'm here helplessly
In love and nothing can stop me
You can't stop me 'cause once I start it
Can't return me once you bought it
I'm coming baby, don't got it (don't make me wait)
So let's be about it

No, no, no, no
Don't phunk with my heart

Baby, have some trustin', trustin'
When I come in lustin', lustin'
Cause I bring you that comfort
I ain't only here cause I want ya body
I want your mind too
Interestin's what I find you
And I'm interested in the long haul
Come on girl (yee-haw)

(Come on)

I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (in love, baby)
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (in love, baby)

No, no, no, no
Don't phunk with my heart

Girl, you had me, once you kissed me
My love for you is not iffy
I always want you with me
I'll play Bobby and you'll play Whitney
If you smoke, I'll smoke too
That's how much I'm in love with you
Crazy is what crazy do
Crazy in love, I'm a crazy fool

No, no, no, no
Don't phunk with my heart

Why are you so insecure
When you got passion and love her
You always claimin' I'm a cheater
Think I'd up and go leave ya
For another señorita
You forgot that I need ya
You must've caught amnesia
That's why you don't believe

(Uh, yeah, check it out)

Don't you worry about a thing, baby
Cause you know you got me by a string, baby
Don't you worry about a thing, baby
Cause you know you got me by a string, baby

Baby girl, you make me feel
You know you make me feel so real
I love you more than sex appeal
(Cause you're)

That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl
That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl
That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl
That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl
That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl
That-tha, that tha, that-tha, that girl

No, no, no, no
Don't phunk with my heart
No, no, no, no
Don't phunk with my heart

I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (in love, baby)
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (in love, baby)
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (in love, baby)
I wonder if I take you home
Would you still be in love, baby (in love, baby)

Don't you worry about a thing, baby
Cause you know you got me by a string, baby
Don't you worry about a thing, baby
Cause you know you got me by a string, baby

Don't Phunk With My Heart
  • The "That-that-that-that girl" part is sampled from the 1988 song "Sally (That Girl)" by Gucci Crew II. The "I wonder if I take you home" part comes from the 1985 song "I Wonder If I Take You Home," which was the first hit for Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam.
  • Lyrically, this song mimics the theme of "I Wonder If I Take You Home," which finds a girl (in this case, Fergie), trying to decide if the guy she likes will respect her and stay with her if she sleeps with him.
  • The beginning sample of the music was copied from a song used in a 1978 Bollywood (the Indian version of Hollywood) movie called Don.
  • Some radio stations play an edited version: "Don't Mess With My Heart."
  • This won the 2005 Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group; it was the Black Eyed Peas' second Grammy.

    Change Lyrics

    People talking
And they're saying that you're leaving
    So unhappy
With the way that you've been living

    Oh oh oh
    We always wish for money
    We always wish for fame
We think we have the answers

Some things ain't ever gonna Change (change)
It doesn't matter who you are
    It's all the same (change)
What's in your heart will never change

    Look in the mirror
And you see how you've been taken
    You won't surrender
But now your heart is breakin'

    Oh oh oh
    We always wish for money
    We always wish for fame
We think we have the answers

Some things ain't ever gonna change (change)
It doesn't matter who you are
    It's all the same (change)
What's in your heart will never change

    Do you remember
When you got your lucky break
    You're looking back now
And it seems like a mistake

    Oh oh oh
    We always wish for money
    We always wish for fame
We think we have the answers

Some things ain't ever gonna change (change)
It doesn't matter who you are
    It's all the same (change)
What's in your heart will never change

    It's only change (change)
It doesn't matter who you are
    It's all the same (change)
What's in your heart will never change

It doesn't matter who you are
    It's all the same (change)
What's in your heart will stay the same
It doesn't matter who you are

It's all the same (what¹s in your heart)
    It's only
    It's only
    It's only change

    Never (it doesn't matter)
    You ain't gonna
You ain't gonna change (what's in your heart)
    You ain't gonna change

    Doesn't matter who you are

  • This song was originally recorded by the band Spider, which featured future David Letterman Show band member Anton Fig on drums and Holly Knight on keyboards. The song was written by Knight, who went on to co-write many hits, including "The Best," (Tina Turner) "Rag Doll" (Aerosmith) and "Obsession" (Animotion).

The song first appeared on Spider's second (and last) album, Between The Lines, which was released in 1981 on Mike Chapman's Dreamland Records. Knight told us the story behind "Change": "I was thinking how important it was to keep things real when success starting happening for us. I had seen several musicians let the fame and success go to their head and I thought that all those things shouldn't really change a person because what's inside of you should remain the same. I think I've lived my life by that notion."
  • This song was pitched to John Waite, who released it as the first single from his 1982 debut solo album, Ignition. Waite recorded the song because he liked the message, it fit his sound, and he thought it had lots of hit potential. Waite was going through a huge transformation at the time: his band The Babys had broken up and he had gotten married. Work on his solo album took him to New York City, where he was away from his wife and his home as he navigated the record industry as a solo act. It was rough waters, as the album - and this single - underperformed (Ignition peaked at #68 in the US and didn't chart at all in the UK). Waite blamed his record company, Chrysalis, for failing to promote the song, and extricated himself from his contract to sign with EMI for his next album. He was vindicated when that next album, No Brakes, produced the hit "Missing You," while "Change" became a fan favorite and found a home on many radio stations' playlists.
  • This didn't chart when Waite first released the song, but when it was used in the movie Vision Quest, it was re-released and made #54 in America. The soundtrack also featured the #1 Madonna hit "Crazy For You."
  • The Spider album where this song first appeared contains another song that would also become a hit for another artist: "Better Be Good To Me," which was later a hit for Tina Turner. Holly Knight also wrote that one, this time with help from Spider's producer Mike Chapman.
  • John Waite changed a few of the verse lyrics from the original version of the song and slowed down the tempo a bit. Holly Knight, who wrote the song, told us: "I have to say that I much prefer John's version. It's much more guitar driven and I love his vocals."
  • Neil Giraldo, who is Pat Benatar's guitarist, husband and producer, produced this track. Little did he know that the woman who wrote it would provide his wife's most popular song: the next year, Benatar recorded "Love Is A Battlefield," which was also written by Holly Knight.

There's another Knight hit-recipient on "Change" as well: Patty Smyth did the the backup vocals on the track. With her band Scandal, Smyth had a hit with Knight's song "The Warrior" in 1984. Says Knight: "That's six degrees of separation working it's magic right there."
  • Waite made a video for this song, which was directed by Kort Falkenberg III, who also did Billy Idol's "Hot In the City" clip and Waite's "Missing You." MTV had been on the air for less than a year when the video showed up in their offices. They were craving videos from American Rock musicians, as that's how they envisioned their format, but these were very hard to come by at the time. Waite is British, but he sounds American and the video was very USA - it was shot in Los Angeles with a California model/actress as the female lead. In our interview with John Waite , he said: "'Change' was a brilliant video. Way ahead of its time. We were getting like 10 spins a day on MTV because nobody was making videos. And we'd gone in and made a work of art, really."
  • The video follows a woman whose star has fallen and is trapped in a cycle of bad decisions. Lines of cocaine (actually powered sugar) appear on a mirror over the lyrics, "Look in the mirror and see how you've been taken." MTV had a problem with this, but the clip's director Kort Falkenberg III called them to explain that the video is actually anti-drug, as Waite is seen knocking over the cocaine-laden mirror and the woman meets her demise in the end when she jumps off the building.

The woman in the video is Tina Gullickson, who joined Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band as a backup singer in 1995.

    Death's Head Lyrics

    Death's pointed at your head
Your mind on the trigger pull it
Bludgeon bodies give up their muted horror story
    Scene of your rage
    Death is not strange
    Blood on the walls
    You stand alone satisfied

I'll wake the silence in you
I'll shoot the violence through you

Terrified by the thought that you are all alone
Paralyzed by the fact that you are not alone
You're losing your mind, I'm losing control
You're losing your mind, as I bury your world

I'll wake the silence in you
I'll shoot the violence through you

I can't remember yet someone always seems to die
You are the reason why I became the chosen one
    I've got the right
    God makes no sense
    I've got the right
I feel my back against the wall

    Death's pointed at your head
Your mind on the trigger pull it
Bludgeon bodies give up their muted horror story

    Scene of my rage
    Scene of my rage
    Death is your name
    You're facing your grave

I taste your tears caress your face
    I watch you lie insane
    Dying for love
    Praying to die

    I want what's inside you
    Dressed in your blood
    You wear it well
    Dying because I care

Your eyes are wide but you can't see
    Rotting my lust away
I'll shoot the violence through you
And wake the part that's dead
I hate the silence in you
I want what's in your head

    I'll Be Around Lyrics

This, is our fork in the road
    Love's last episode
There's nowhere to go, oh no

You made your choice, now it's up to me
    To bow out gracefully
Though you hold the key, but baby

Whenever you call me, I'll be there
Whenever you want me, I'll be there
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
    I'll Be Around

I, knew just what to say
    Now I found out today
That all the words had slipped away, but I know

    There's always a chance
    A tiny spark remains, yeah
    And sparks turn into flames
And love can burn once again, but I know you know

Whenever you call me, I'll be there
Whenever you want me, I'll be there
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
    I'll be around yeah

Whenever you call me, I'll be there
Whenever you want me, I'll be there
Even if I have to call, I'll be there
    I'll be around

Just call me at home, I'll be there
I'll never leave you alone, I'll be there
Just call out your name you know I know you know
    I'll be around

Whenever you call me, I'll be there
Whenever you want me, I'll be there
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
    I'll be around

    I'll Be Around
  • This song of devotion is heartbreaking on a deeper level. The lyrics, written by the aptly-named Phil Hurtt, find our hero unable to move on from a relationship that has ended. There is an air of desperation as he offers himself up to his lost love unconditionally. He might be bowing out gracefully, but he can't leave her behind.

It was The Spinners' producer Thom Bell who came up with the music and the title for the song. In our interview with Phil Hurtt , he explained: "When Thommy said 'I'll be around,' I started thinking about a scenario and a story. Thommy was telling me, 'Whenever you call me, I'll be there.' That's one of the things he did give me. And I'm thinking, okay, great. So the guy broke up and he wants her back, whenever you call me I'll be there, whenever you need me, I'll be there. So, okay, great. And then the next thing I know, this is our fork in the road. And that's the way it happens.

I'm just so proud and happy and blessed that that song has crossed over into that company of being referred to as 'classic.' You hear a great melody and a great idea for a song, and then all you've got to do is write the story. I mean, wow, what an opportunity."
  • The Spinners were signed to Motown Records in 1963, but were never one of the top acts at the label. In 1972, they moved to Atlantic Records, and recorded some unsuccessful session with producer Jimmy Roach.

Atlantic recorded some of their top R&B acts, including Archie Bell & The Drells and Dusty Springfield, at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. A top producer at Sigma was Thom Bell, so Atlantic sent him a list of their artists to see if there was one he would like to work with. The very last name on the list was The Spinners, which Bell had been listening to since the early '60s. He took them on and wrote the music to "I'll Be Around" for their first session at Sigma Sound. Bell needed lyrics for the song, but his usual writing partner, Linda Creed, was out of town. He tracked down a songwriter he had gone to high school with named Phil Hurtt, who agreed to compose the words, with instructions by Bell to fit them exactly to the melody. Hurtt delivered, and Bell recorded the song with the group for their first single. When Atlantic issued the single, "I'll Be Around" was the B-side of another song they cut with Bell, "How Could I Let You Get Away." When disc jockeys flipped it and played "I'll Be Around," Atlantic made it the A-side on future pressings, and The Spinners were off and running at their new label. The song was a #1 R&B hit, and led to many more hits, including "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" and "Then Came You."
  • The musicians on this track were the Sigma Sound Studios house band, MFSB, who scored a #1 hit with the
Soul Train theme song. Some of the musicians on this track were Norman Harris on guitar, Ronnie Baker on bass, and Earl Young on drums. According to producer Thom Bell, the musicians laughed at the arrangement because it was so simple. He says they had the track recorded in 40 minutes.
  • The lead vocals on this one were by Bobby Smith, who was an original member of the group. Philippé Wynne, who sang lead on some of The Spinners hits, was with the group at the time, but he did tenor backing vocals on this track.
  • Cover versions made the US Hot 100 in the each of the three decades after The Spinners first charted with the song:

In 1985, the Todd Rundgren -produced group What Is This? took the song to #62.

In 1995, a rap version by Rappin' 4-Tay with The Spinners hit #39.

In 2005, Hall & Oates' cover went to #97.

The song has also been liberally sampled. Examples included "Any Emcee" by Nine, "You Made Your Choice" by Papoose, and "Tru Homies" by TRU.

I woke up it was 7
    I waited 'til 11
To figure out that no one would call
I think I got a lot of friends
But I don't hear from them
    What's another night all alone
When you're spending every day on your own
    And here it goes

    I'm Just A Kid
    And life is a nightmare
    I'm just a kid
I know that it's not fair
    Nobody cares 'cause I'm alone
    And the world is
    Having more fun then me
    Tonight

And maybe when the night is dead
    I'll crawl into my bed
I'm staring at these four walls again
I'll try to think about the last time
    I had a good time
    Everyone's got somewhere to go
And they're gonna leave me here on my own
    And here it goes

    I'm just a kid
    And life is a nightmare
    I'm just a kid
I know that it's not fair
    Nobody cares
'Cause I'm alone and the world is
    Having more fun than me

What the hell is wrong with me
    Don't fit in with anybody
How did this happen to me?
    Wide awake I'm bored and
    I can't fall asleep
And every night is the worst night ever

    I'm just a kid
    I'm just a kid
    I'm just a kid (I'm just a kid)
    Yeah, I'm just a kid (I'm just a kid)
    I'm just a kid (I'm just a kid)

    I'm just a kid
    And life is a nightmare
    I'm just a kid
I know that its not fair

    I'm just a kid

When I See You Smile Lyrics

    Sometimes I wonder
If I'd ever make it through
    Through this world
    without having in you
    I just wouldn't have a clue
    Cause sometimes it seems
Like this world's closing in on me
And there's no way of breaking free
And then I see you reach for me
Sometimes I want to give up
    want to give in
I want to quit the fight
And then I see you baby
    And everything's alright
    Everything's alright
    When I See You Smile
    I can face the world
Oh you know I can do anything
    When I see you smile
I see a ray of light
    Oh I see it shining
    right through the rain
    When I see you smile
Baby when I see you smile at me
    Oh yeah
Baby there's nothing in this world that could ever do
What the touch of your hand can do
It's like nothing that I ever knew
    Hey
And when the rain is falling
    I don't feel it
Cause you're here with me now
I want to ask you baby
    It's all I'll ever need
    All I'll ever need
    When I see you smile
    I can face the world
Oh you know I can do anything
    When I see you smile
I see a ray of light
    Oh I see it shining
    right through the rain
When I see you smile baby
Baby when I see you smile at me
Sometimes I want to give up
    I want to give in
I want to quit the fight
Then one look at you baby
    And everything's alright
    Hey everything's alright
    It's alright
    When I see you smile

    When I See You Smile
  • Bad English was a supergroup comprised of lead singer John Waite, keyboard player Jonathan Cain, bass player Ricky Phillips, guitarist Neal Schon and drummer Deen Castronovo. Waite, Cain and Phillips had been in a popular British band called the Babys, while Schon, Castronovo and Cain were in Journey (Cain was in both groups). It was quite an assemblage of musical talent, and between them they wrote 11 of the 13 songs on their self-titled debut album. "When I See You Smile" wasn't one of them.

The song was written by Diane Warren, who had a knack for supplying popular Rock musicians with Pop hits: she wrote "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" for Starship, "Who Will You Run To" for Heart, and "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" for Aerosmith. She had also written the song "Don't Lose Any Sleep," which appeared on Waite's 1987 solo album Rover's Return.

The band was signed to Epic Records, whose A&R man Don Grierson implored them to record a hit. They liked him, so when he suggested "When I See You Smile," the band agreed to record it, since they knew it would supply Grierson with his hit.
  • This is by far the biggest hit for Bad English, but it's not their only one. Their first single was "Forget Me Not," which made #45 in the US. "When I See You Smile" was their next release, and "Price of Love" came next, charting at #5. They released one more album (Backlash, 1991) before terminating the project. In our John Waite interview , he explained: "It was fun for a year. And then people reverted to type. I think the Journey guys wanted to be back in Journey and I wanted to be back solo. We had a very valiant attempt at making a second record, but we weren't given enough time to write it. We tried, and we almost made it."

    Breakaway Lyrics

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
    Dreamin' of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
    I would pray

    Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
    Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
    So I pray
    I could Breakaway

I'll spread my wings, and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky
    And I'll make a wish
    Take a chance
    Make a change
    And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
    I'll take a risk
    Take a chance
    Make a change
    And breakaway

Want to feel the warm breeze
    Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get on board a fast train
    Travel on a jet plane
    Faraway
    And breakaway

I'll spread my wings, and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change

I won't forget all the ones that I love
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
    And breakaway

    Buildings with a hundred floors
    Swinging 'round revolvin' doors
Maybe I don't know where they take me
    But gotta keep movin' on
    Movin' on
    Fly away
    Breakaway

I'll spread my wings, and I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
    And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
    And breakaway
    Breakaway
    Breakaway

    Breakaway
  • Avril Lavigne wrote the lyrics to this song, which she worked on with professional songwriters Matthew Gerrard and B. Beneate. It was intended for Lavigne's second album, Under My Skin, but she didn't think it fit the album and let Clarkson record it as a single. The song did so well that at the last minute, Clarkson's second album was renamed Breakaway and this song was included on it.
  • The song is about breaking away from an old life and trying new things. Some may even consider it a song about growing up, and that could be true in some ways, but it is mostly about shedding your past and becoming a new person. The theme appealed to Clarkson, who could relate to the lyrics.
  • This song was used in the movie The Princess Diaries 2.
  • Gerrard explained to Songwriter Universe Magazine: "The song was originally written for Avril (Lavigne), it was inspired by her. As it turned out, it wasn't quite right for Avril's album, so we pitched it to Kelly Clarkson. It all worked out great. Kelly sounds great singing it, and it was a big hit for us."
  • Clarkson calls this "The song for everyone going out on their own." She relates it to when she moved from a small town in Texas to Los Angeles, where against the odds she became a star.

    The Night Lyrics

    Beware
    Of his promise
    Believe
    What I say
    Before
    I go forever
    Be sure
    Of what you say

So he paints a pretty picture
And he tells you that he needs you
And he covers you with flowers
And he always keeps you dreaming
If he always keeps you dreaming
You won't have a lonely hour
If a day could last forever
You might like your ivory tower

But The Night begins to turn your head around
And you know you're gonna lose more than you found
Yeah the night begins to turn your head around

    Beware
    Of his promise
    Believe
    What I say
    Before
    I go forever
    Be sure
    Of what you say

For the words may come too easy
If you don't believe I'm leaving
And goodbye will come too quickly
If you really think he loves you
If you really think he loves you
You would give your love so sweetly
If that day could last forever
You would fall in love completely

But the night begins to turn your head around
And you know you're gonna lose more than you found
Yeah the night begins to turn your head around

But the night begins to turn your head around
And you know you're gonna lose more than you found
Yeah the night begins to turn your head around
And you know you're gonna lose more than you found
Oh the night begins to turn your head around
Yeah, the night, the night, the night, the night, the night, the night
Yeah, the night, the night, the night, the night, the night, the night
Oh the night begins to turn your head around

    The Night
  • By the early 1970s The Four Seasons hits had dried up and the group signed to Motown with disastrous results. Even with the team of songwriter/producers Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio with lead singer Frankie Valli intact, the first album, Chameleon, tanked after it was released by the Motown subsidiary label MoWest. The release of a follow-up LP was canceled, but this song from the album found an audience in the UK when it was adopted by the British Northern Soul and Disco circuit. Originally released as a single only in Germany and the Netherlands, MoWest capitalized on the song's newfound popularity by releasing "The Night" as a single in the UK in 1975, where it went to #7 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • Bob Gaudio wrote this song with Al Ruzicka, who was added to the group as a keyboard player in 1972 and left later that year. The song finds Frankie Valli asking a girl to resist the charms of her Lothario.
  • The song was covered by B.E.F, a British production group that stands for British Electric Foundation, for their 2013 album Dark. Though their version didn't make the final tracklisting, it did inspire the name of their LP. The project's leader, Martyn Ware , told us that it was this song's dark lyrics that inspired the album title. "It's quite fast and Motown-y dance-able, I suppose, but the lyrics are really deep," he explained. "The verse is kind of half whispered. You've got this very kind of dance-y backing track going on, but he's going [singing] 'Beware of his promise, believe what I say, before you go forever, be sure what you say.' It's all about, 'Oh, I'm fu--ing up.' I've lost this woman. But watch out. The guy that you're with is a bastard."
  • This should not be confused with other Four Seasons nocturnally titled songs such as "December 1963 (Oh What a Night)," "Spend The Night in Love" and "Heaven Must Have Sent You (Here in The Night)."
  • In 1975, around the same time this song charted in the UK, Frankie Valli was enjoying chart success in the US with "My Eyes Adored You" (#1 in March) and "Swearin' To God" (#6 in July). This prompted Bob Gaudio to form a new version of the band around Valli, which signed a deal with Warner-Curb Records and released an album that year called "Who Loves You."
  • In our interview with Frankie Valli , he cited this song as an example of one that should have been a hit, but failed because of poor promotion. "There are some songs that were on albums that I felt could have been hits but record companies at the time didn't agree," Valli explained. "A good example is when we recorded an album for Motown Records and it was put out and nothing really happened. They really didn't promote it, and promotion is a very, very important part of it."

    Read Between The Lies Lyrics

Evangelist you claim God speaks through you,
Your restless mouth full of lies gains popularity.
You care not for the old that suffer,
When empty pockets cry from hunger.

    Penniless from their generosity,
Sharing their money to quench your greed.
Searching for the answer to their prayers
They cry their last wish of need.
    Save me.

His spirit lives and breathes in me.
The almighty transformed to your screen.
The meanings lost in its translation,
No holy words, describe his deception.

You say you'll help us find the lord,
Tell me preacher how do you know
A simple quest for a visible savior,
To lead us through our final prayer.
    Save me.

    Send your donations,
    Contribute to the cause.
    Luxuries,
    Your righteous reward?

    Praise the lord, praise god,
Is what you wish to sell.
There is no heaven without a hell.

In your mind's eye could you truly believe,
That by giving you can save your soul,
    Could you be so naive!
You heal the sick,[you] raise the dead,
    You blind the congregation
    With the things you say.

Religious blackmail a deceit of trust,
That death will come and all will be lost.

Can you hear the serpents call,
Look deep in those deceiving eyes.
Ignore the writing on the wall,
You should Read Between The Lies.

    When doubt subsides his honesty,
    An inquiry, is it blasphemy?
Impure the soul, that's made to suffer,
No sermons left to hide or cover,
    An empty promise, lie unfulfilled,
To steal a dream or get it killed.
They claim your trip to heavens nearby,
You may believe it but Satan wouldn't lie.

  • This track is a collaboration with the West Coast gangsta newcomer A$ton Matthews, Cypress Hill rapper B-Real, and two of the three surviving members of the Queens-bred group Onyx. Ferg told MTV News that Onyx, whose hardcore sound presaged A$AP Mob a generation ago, reminds him a lot of the New York Hip-Hop collective where he first made his name and he was pleased that he managed to pull two of the group's members Sticky Fingaz and Fredro Starr for this cut. "Sticky and Fredro, they hang out a lot all the time. They're brothers. They just be everywhere together. They're still wild," he said. "They remind me of us, A$AP. They remind me of A$AP. So we had a lot of moments where we weren't even working, we were just going over like old stories."

    Hook In Mouth Lyrics

A cockroach in the concrete, courthouse tan and beady eyes.
A slouch with fallen arches, purging truths into great lies.
A little man with a big eraser, changing history
Procedures that he's programmed to, all he hears and sees.

Altering the facts and figures, events and every issue.
Make a person disappear, and no one will ever miss you.

Rewrites every story, every poem that ever was.
Eliminates incompetence, and those who break the laws.
Follow the instructions of the New Ways' Evil Book of Rules.
Replacing rights with wrongs, the files and records in the schools.

You say you've got the answers, well who asked you anyway?
Ever think maybe it was meant to be this way?
Don't try to fool us, we know the worst is yet to come.
I believe my kingdom will come.

F is for fighting, R is for red,
Ancestors' blood in battles they've shed.
E, we elect them, E, we eject them,
In the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
D, for your dying, O, your overture,
M, they will cover your grave with manure.
This spells out freedom, it means nothing to me,
    As long as there's a P.M.R.C.

M is for money and you know what that cures.

Put your hand right up my shirt,

like a fish with Hook In Mouth.

  • This song talks about the Parents Music Resource Council (the PMRC), an American advocacy group headed by Tipper Gore that tried to restrict the sale of certain music. Many musicians believed the PMRC was a threat to freedom of speech.
  • The chorus of the song spells out "Freedom" in acronym:

    F is for fighting
R is for red, ancestors' blood in battles they've shed.
    E, we elect them
E, we eject them, in the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

    Doing Time Lyrics

    The lives of some men
If walls can taught to spills the lies
We'll see the world through devil's eyes

    I maintain an addiction
Been known to take it too high
I gotta a inch with a loaded head trigger
And a one way ticket to fly

When there's no writing on the wall
I see the lifeless devils start to crawl
And I don't need no lessons
    After all
    Everybody's doing their time

Caught your eye in the corner,
Don't you look at me wrong
Fucked up and thrown into the gutter,
    gotta fix what don't belong

I see the writing on the wall
I see the lifeless devils start to crawl
And I don't need no lessons
    After all
    Everybody's doing their time

That's just a price to play
So tell me what you like
Gotta hand on the kerosene match tonight, right

    Had enough of opinions
I got enough on my mind
Sell your soul for approval and a dollar
Got a pretty little body to grind

I see your number on the wall
I see the lifeless devils start to crawl
    I don't need no lessons
    Watch the fall
    You lost my attention
    After all
    Everybody's doing their time, time

    Doing Time
  • Hail To The King was produced by Mike Elizondo. The Los Angeles producer and songwriter is best known for his Hip-Hop collaborations with artists such as Eminem and 50 Cent. He previously worked with Avenged Sevenfold on their 2010 album Nightmare. Guitarist Synyster Gates told MusicRadar.com it was Elizondo who suggested this track. "He was hearing a kind of low vocal, swagger-based rock song," he explained, "sort of a quintessential '80s or '90s vibe but with a very modern approach. It's a bad freight train that never stops."
  • The song is about the band going to their favorite bar (Johnny's Saloon in Huntingdon Beach, Orange County, California) and getting themselves in trouble. Vocalist M. Shadows explained to Kerrang! magazine: "It's about the prison in your mind - the prison of going there to drink away your problems. Everybody's in the same mind-set there and everybody's doing their time. For us, it was a metaphor about being trapped in your own head and using devices to even that out and make it better."

"We went to Johnny's a lot during the making of this record," he continued." It's a place where we wrote (2003's) Waking The Fallen and (2005's) City Of Evil too. Every night when we'd finished writing, we'd go and have a drink. We kind of got away from that with the white album (their self-titled 2007 record) and (2010's) Nightmare. It's one of those places that's like a family there, so we tried to get back to that a little bit on the record."
