McCauley explained: "I wrote this song for a friend of mine. All of a sudden I was laying there one night and thought the first line has to capture everything. I was staring at the clock and it was midnight, and I wrote, 'Midnight workings, weather down the storyline, I try to find the truth between all the lies' and it all seemed to work."

This was featured on the soundtrack to the 2005 movie Elektra.

This is a recording of a live performance by Passenger (Mike Rosenberg) at The Borderline in London. He told VH1: "'I Hate' is one of those songs I wrote in a bad mood, about all the stuff that annoys me. But it's a lighthearted moment in an album that's quite heavy. I'm not depressed, I'm not a sad guy - I'm really quite happy most of the time, and I want to get that side of myself into the music as well."

Rosenberg takes digs at X-Factor, Facebook, fussy eaters and even festival toilets in this song, and even says that Cher's face "looks like it's been hit by a truck." According to the singer, he was just getting out his frustrations, referring to this vitriol as "just harmless piss-taking." Rosenberg was on a bus in Australia when he wrote it, and quite uncomfortable, as it was very hot and there were crying babies onboard.

Out Of Space

The repeated Reggae-sounding line is often misheard. You may find some lyrics on the internet that say the Jamaican singer sings, "I'm gone sent into outer space" or "I've gone sending to outer space." The original line is "I'm gonna send him to outa space, to find another race." It's from the Reggae song "Chase The Devil" by Max Romeo & The Upsetters, and it also appears in the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Vocalist Gary Lightbody explained the album's "ghost" references to The Sun: "The first song I wrote for the album was the title track and the male character dies in that song, so I thought, s---, what do I do now? I've just killed him' So each song is about a memory of their lives."

"I guess it's a little haunted," he added, "ghosts just keep popping up. I didn't consciously add the word, it just appeared naturally a number of times."

"By the end of the recording, the first track I wrote was the obvious title track as it seemed to link everything together."

The Ghost Of The Mountain album was recorded at producer Jacknife Lee's home studio in Topanga Canyon in California. The view from the locale graces the LP's cover.

This Gospel-Soul song is so crushingly sad that Lightbody claims to have broken down and cried after he'd written it.

Every song on The Ghost Of The Mountain album is a chapter in the story of two lovers on the run from the law. Gary Lightbody explained to MTV News: "The first album was written about invented characters and this album continues their story. Each song picks them up at different points in their life, so in terms of narrative storytelling it's sort of like Tarantino."

"It's an American story," he added: "A boy and a girl, that met in the first song of the first album, who have been through hell and back."

This song is about how everyone is equal and how people try to change themselves to be what the media wants them to be. For black individuals, it can be about how we try to change ourselves to "act white" but in the end the system brings us down, yet we bring ourselves back up with the help of our people.

This was released as a double-A-side single with "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)." The single went to #1 in the US, so under Billboard methodology at the time, the chart position is attributed to both songs combined.

Like many Sly & the Family Stone songs of this era - "Everyday People" and "Stand!" among them - "Everybody Is A Star" has a message of togetherness and self-worth. These song were set against joyful melodies that kept them from sounding preachy. They went over very well at live shows where a sense of community formed.

Where You Stand

This life-affirming song is the first single and title track from the Scottish Indie band Travis' seventh studio album. It was released on April 30, 2013. The single was accompanied by the shorter radio mix, which also uses more of an orchestration on the chorus.

The song was written by Travis bassist Dougie Payne and London singer-songwriter Holly Partridge. The latter wrote, sung and played guitar for female rock band The Shebeats, who have supported Razorlight, Pete Doherty, and the Maccabees amongst others. She has also sung backing vocals for Ben Folds.

Holly Partridge penned the lyrics. Vocalist Fran Healy told The Sun: "I think it is about remaining with something even when it isn't working. We often give up at the first sign of difficulty but if you have the will there is always the way."

The Where You Stand album was recorded at Ocean Sound Recordings, Giske, in northwest Norway and Hansa Tonstudio, Berlin. The cover photograph was taken out of the door of the Norwegian studio by Healy. He told The Sun: "The cows wandered into that shot and we didn't see them until looking later. We couldn't have placed them better."

And then 'I'm on my way to meet to the moon on the bay where she's rising big and full and blue'; the moon is a wonderful symbol of awakening in the night, of glowing in the dark, so to speak. So there, there's my first verse of 'Counterclockwise.' And it was meant to be something that would endorse individuals becoming unbound and unwound, such that they can express themselves freely, and hopefully with dignity, tolerance, and passion that won't advocate a predatory lifestyle. Strife

This was released as the first single from Trivium's Vengeance Falls album. The song was performed live for the first time on August 1, 2013 at the Resurrection Fest at Viveiro in Spain.

Trivium bassist Paolo Gregoletto discussed the song in a track by track breakdown on his website : "'Strife' grew on me big time throughout the recording. It went from being a song I was unsure of to a definite first single (which was a close one between 'Vengeance Falls' and this one)."

He continued: "The intro is fu--ing massive and will give anyone that likes guitar tone a boner guaranteed. The verse vocals have Matt starting off in a lower register, gradually climbing into a more pissed off menacing voice with some screams layered in."

The song's music video was filmed in July 2013 at Studio One in Orlando, Florida and directed by Ramon Boutviseth, who has previously worked with Darkest Hour, Incubus and All That Remains.
