Midnight at the Oasis Lyrics

Midnight at the Oasis
Send your camel to bed
Shadows painting our faces
Traces of romance in our heads
Heaven's holding a half-moon
Shining just for us
Let's slip off to a sand dune, real soon
And kick up a little dust
Come on, Cactus is our friend
He'll point out the way
Come on, till the evening ends
Till the evening ends
You don't have to answer
There's no need to speak
I'll be your belly dancer, prancer
And you can be my sheik

I know your Daddy's a sultan
A nomad known to all
With fifty girls to attend him, they all send him
Jump at his beck and call
But you won't need no harem, honey
When I'm by your side
And you won't need no camel, no no
When I take you for a ride
Come on, Cactus is our friend
He'll point out the way
Come on, till the evening ends
Till the evening ends
Midnight at the oasis
Send your camel to bed
Got shadows painting our faces
And traces of romance in our heads

Midnight at the Oasis
  • This song was written by David Nichtern , a composer who also became a renown teacher of Shambhala Buddhism. He told us the story of this song, which is one of the more sensual tunes you will come across. Said Nichtern: "I wrote the song before I started working with Maria... the details are a little bit intimate, but let's just say there was a girl, a waterbed, feta cheese and grape leaves, and a Martin 000-18 near by.

I actually produced the demo (in Woodstock) that got Maria her Warner Bros individual artist deal, so I was on the map already with them to that extent. On that demo was a song I wrote called 'I Never Did Sing You a Lovesong' which made it onto the album but was re-recorded. Also we demoed a track that Wendy Waldman wrote called 'Mad Mad Me (I Love You)' which made it onto the album as it was so I got producer credit for that track.

My memory is that I came out to LA and got to play rhythm guitar on several tracks. From there I got more and more involved with the record. At a rehearsal, I played 'Midnight at the Oasis' for Lenny Waronker and he liked it and wanted to include it on the record.

We recorded it with some great musicians - Jim Gordon on drums (who later went crazy and killed his own mother and went to prison for life I think). Freebo played bass, Mark Jordan on piano and me on acoustic guitar. Later, Famous Amos Garrett added that amazing electric guitar part and solo, which in some circles is as famous as the song itself.

Warner's released the album and then Midnight as the first single... they hung in there with it for something like nine months until it took off.... that might not happen today... the rest is herstory as they say..."
  • Maria Muldaur is an Italian singer who was born Maria D'Amato. Muldaur is to white female pop singers what Anita O'Day is to white female jazz singers: way hipper than the herd. She recorded in the '60s with the Even Dozen and Jim Kweskin jug bands and with her then-husband, Geoff Muldaur, before going out on her own with this 1973 recording.

Sidemen include Jim Dickinson, Spooner Oldham, Jim Keltner, Mac Rebennack, Ray Brown, and Dave Holland. Among the tunes on her self-titled album are Jimmie Rodgers' "Any Old Time," Dolly Parton's "My Tennessee Mountain Home," and the album's hit, "Midnight At The Oasis."
  • In our Maria Muldaur interview , she explained: I was making my first solo album for Warner Brothers in 1973, and I had just recently separated from my then-husband, Geoff Muldaur, who not only was my partner, but also my musical partner, and sort of the mastermind of, musically, whatever we did together. So being a solo artist was completely strange and alien and rather scary territory for me.

And so I was out in California finding myself in the studio with all the top guns: Dr. John , Ry Cooder, David Lindley; I mean, all the fabulous guys that played on my first album. And I had been working with a young guitarist named David Nichtern when I first separated from Geoffrey. He was very encouraging and told me, 'You can do this.' I was just sobbing and I was a mess. We had a little talk and he would say, 'Look, people still know you from the Jug Band, and if I can get work in these little coffee houses, you can, too.' And so we put together a few tunes, and he got us some gigs. This was real low-profile stuff. I'd be crying all the way up to the gig, and he'd say, 'Okay, dry your eyes and wash your face. We're on in half an hour.' And he was just a very supportive little brother to me.

And so when I found myself out in California doing this solo album, I was going to do one of his songs. He's a very lovely songwriter and he'd written this beautiful song called 'I Never Did Sing You a Lovesong.' Very lyrical little waltz-y, kind of a country waltz kind of thing. And he knew I had all these really fabulous musicians at the studio. But he came out on his own dime, because he just felt, well, maybe they'll let him play rhythm guitar on his own tune or something. So he came on out in his little VW bug and slept on a mattress on my living room floor in the Hollywood Hills and came to the studio, was observing everything, and did get to play on his own song.

And then we were almost finished recording, the producer came in the studio and said, 'You know, I've been listening to the rough mixes, and I think we're in pretty good shape.' He said, 'You know, we've got some up tempo stuff and we've got some nice ballads. I think if we had one more medium tempo song, then the album would be nicely balanced out, we'd be in good shape. Does anything come to mind?'

So David was standing right there, and just off the top of my head, kind of as a gesture of gratitude to him because he had been so supportive to me, kind of holding my hand through all of this, which was very overwhelming, you know, I'd never been in that position before of being a solo artist and trying to make my way through an album that was all about me. And I said, 'Well, David has this song. It's a funny little song, really, but it is medium tempo.' I said, 'David, play them 'Midnight at the Oasis' and see what you think.' Which I'd heard before and I thought it was just a goofy little song; I didn't think much of it one way or the other. So he whipped out his guitar and started to play it on the guitar, and I sang it. And the producer cocked his head, he said, 'Oh, that's cute, okay, wanna do that one?' So as a gesture to David, I said, 'Yeah, let's do that one. I have no other bright ideas.' And we called in some great studio players and we cut it. And the rest is history."
  • A hit song can become a burden to a singer if she is sick of the song yet still expected to perform it night after night. So how does Muldaur feel about constantly performing this song? She told us: "I still do enjoy singing it. And you know why? Because number one, it was a very hip-ly written song. A lot of the jazz artists have covered it because it's very well constructed. Imagine my plight if my big hit had been 'Wild Thing' by the Troggs, a really dumb three-chord song. But it's a song that's so well constructed that an artist can improvise on it night after night. So that's reason number one, it's a cool song.

Reason number two is I love the look of the faces of the audience when the band strikes that number up, when the band goes into the intro of that number. Because apparently, from all the stories that have been told to me when I meet my fans after the show to sign my CD, that song was the soundtrack to many a love-and-lust affair, and if I had been writing down all the stories of what people tell me they were doing or were inspired to do because of that song, or as that song was playing, I could have written quite the little x-rated book. So when I start that song, people's faces light up and I see very happy, maybe slightly x-rated memories flitting across their faces. And so that's worth more than any Grammy nomination or award - to hear first hand from your fans, from hundreds and hundreds of fans, how a piece of music I didn't even write, but that I selected and recorded and just put out there in the airwaves, just had such a happy impact on people's lives. What a gift is that?"

    Applause Lyrics

I stand here waiting for you to bang the gong
To crash the critics saying, "is it right or is it wrong?"
If only fame had an IV, baby could I bear
Being away from you, I found the vein, put it in here

I live for the Applause, applause, applause
I live for the applause-plause, live for the applause-plause
Live for the way that you cheer and scream for me
    The applause, applause, applause

Give me that thing that I love (Turn the lights on)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch (Make it real loud)
Give me that thing that I love (Turn the lights on)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch (Make it real loud)

    (A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E) Make it real loud
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch
    (A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E) Make it real loud
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch

    I've overheard your theory
    "Nostalgia's for geeks"
I guess sir, if you say so
Some of us just like to read

    One second I'm a kunst
Then suddenly the kunst is me
    Pop culture was in art
Now, art's in pop culture in me

I live for the applause, applause, applause
I live for the applause-plause, live for the applause-plause
Live for the way that you cheer and scream for me
    The applause, applause, applause

Give me that thing that I love (Turn the lights on)

    (A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E) Make it real loud

    Ooh touch, touch ooh
Touch, touch now ooh ooh ooh ooh

    Applause
  • The lead single from ARTPOP was penned by Gaga with the Chicago producer DJ White Shadow, who also worked with the singer on Born This Way. The song was originally scheduled to be released on August 19, 2013 but the singer's label was forced drop it a week earlier following a series of online leaks. Gaga debuted the tune live at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25, 2013.
  • Gaga sings on the song of living for her fans' applause - the way they cheer and scream for her. "In my heart of hearts as I was writing, I knew that if I asked [the fans] to cheer for me before I sang or if I alluded to the fact that they would cheer for me before I sang," said Gaga to Women's Wear Daily. "They do that all the time for me; before I even open my mouth, the fans start cheering for me. And so this exclamation, 'Give me that thing that I love. Give it to me. I'm ready, start the music.' I'm from New York. I've worked since I was a five-year-old to be a performer. All my life. I deserve to be here. I'm ready."
  • Speaking with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show, Gaga spoke about how her failing hip influenced this song. "When I was finishing the [Born This Way] tour, I was physically breaking," she said. "I was in a lot of pain, but didn't know where really. I have a strong threshold for pain, so I kept slapping myself saying, 'Get it together.' The only thing that kept me going was the applause. And I was able to drown out the pain and finish the show."

Gaga was diagnosed with a labral tear of her right hip, and was forced to take a break for surgery. The singer told Seacrest how she put all of her energy in to making her third album while she was recovering from her injury. "ARTPOP is a celebration and a poetic musical journey through my friends and I hanging out and enjoying being Pop stars," she explained. "And that's what really inspired the record is that time off."
  • Gaga told Seacrest that the track "almost didn't make the album" until she met with Interscope Records chief Jimmy Iovine and played him 40 songs during a meeting. She said: "We played 'Applause' last and Jimmy said to me, 'Well every single record you've played me has been better than the one you played before it, so the last one should be the first single.'"
  • DJ White Shadow explained to MTV News how the song took on a whole new meaning after Gaga canceled her remaining dates on her Born This Way tour to undergo hip surgery. "Over a period of time it develops into a cohesive idea," he explained. "We write the songs in parts. So basically what I'm saying is that all of them have some kind of meaning. And when she wrote that [song] ... she was hurting that whole entire time. And after she figured out what it was that was hurting and figured how severe that was and had that time off, we had time to go back and like really sit around and craft and take it to the next level."

He added, "When she did that to her hip we didn't know what the single was going to be. We had no idea."
  • Some Twitter users have joked that they thought the song was titled 'Applesauce'. "So I guess @LadyGaga lives for the applause," tweeted one. "I, on the other hand, live for the applesauce."
  • Gaga sparked controversy with a Twitter competition which urged her followers to buy multiple copies of the song, make constants radio requests, and post about the track repeatedly on Twitter. The Mother Monster offered her fans the chance to fly to her appearance at the iTunes Festival in London to meet her, but the suggestion that followers who buy multiple copies of the single and prove it would be entered into the contest caused a bit of a hullabaloo. With multiple purchases counting toward the track's chart placing, many complained that Gaga was artificially inflating the success of the tune.
  • Gaga came under fire in 2011 when similarities were noted between the melody of her "Born This Way" and Madonna's 1989 hit single, "Express Yourself." After releasing this song, fans and reviewers took to the net concerning resemblances between this song and another Madonna track, her 2012 cut, "Girl Gone Wild." A 'mash-up' of the two songs quickly spread across the web.
  • The song's music video was directed by Dutch fashion photographers and past Gaga collaborators Inez & Vinoodh and was inspired by Gaga's passion for shapeshifting. We see the singer wearing an assortment of outfits including a clam shell bikini and a dress made of grass-green mosaic tiles. There are 12 costume changes in total and Gaga told Good Morning America: "When we were on set we did a lot of different looks and they're each very representative of different parts of me, as well as my obsession with transforming."
  • Inez van Lamsweerde, who is one half of Inez & Vinoodh told MTV News that the big idea of the video was to have Gaga symbolize the moment of her hip breaking. She explained: "That's why she's sort of holding up her right leg as a trophy and this idea that no matter what it takes, she'll get back onstage."

The Clamshell Bikini was inspired by Botticelli's famous painting of The Birth of Venus, which depicts the goddess Venus, having emerged from the sea as a fully grown woman, arriving at the seashore. Inez added that they were also inspired by "having this idea that she goes through this struggle to go back onstage, which is in that pink laser tower. And she's sort of dragging that leg as a trophy and making it back on stage as a fully-realized, complete new person and that's why the Botticelli came to mind."

The scene where Gaga's head appears on a black swan was inspired by the singer's fascination with eggs. Inez told MTV News: "She's always had the egg reference in her work and since this video is kind of about a rebirth and at the end there's the Botticelli Birth of Venus reference, so we said, 'OK, an egg... a fur egg and what comes out of a fur egg?' In our minds, a black swan with her face on it."
  • Gaga sings about her affinity for American artist Jeff Koons in this song:

"One second I'm a Koons fan
Then suddenly the Koons is me."

Jeff Koons is known for his reproductions of banal objects, one of which, Tulips, was sold for $33,682,500 at Christie's New York on November 14, 2012. The artist created the ARTPOP album cover, which features his nude sculpture of Gaga.
  • Gaga told The Guardian that rather than being a song for herself, "Applause" is as universal as any love song. "It's so interesting for people to say that the lyrics are all about me the performer," she said. "I want you to feel that way about yourself, that's why I wrote the song. I want you to wake up in the morning and say: 'I live for your applause, look at me today, I'm having a great day, I'm going to work and I'm going to have a fantastic lunch with my friends.' But it's not to be taken quite as seriously and as literally as people make it to be, which is why in the verses I'm sort of making fun of what people think about fame."
  • When she hosted Saturday Night Live on November 16, 2013, Gaga used this song in her monologue, turning the concept of cheap applause into a comedy bit. "Give it up for New York," she said, before explaining that there were two types of applause: the kind you earn and the kind you get by pandering to the audience. "I am a fan of both, and I wrote a song about," she said, launching into a brief performance of the song.
  • The song topped the singles charts in several countries including Hungary, Lebanon and Spain. It also reached #1 on Billboard's US Dance/Electronic Songs and US Hot Dance Club Songs listings.
  • In 2014, this was used in commercials for the Kia Soul.

    STP Lyrics

All that I need, look at all the love we've found
I won't run and pull the one jack move
They love her for the Kingston sound, oh

    Flava-Flave and I-C-E
Once said something that made me
Want to burn my liquor store down to the ground
But I just can't leave the pad, cuz I'll surely wind up dead
'Cuz I know there out there out there waiting and watching for me
Still I got my yellow cat and my wooden baseball bat
And my shiny silver gat and if my homey my back then I got

All that I need, look at all the love we've found, oh
I won't run and pull the one jack move
They love her for the Kingston sound, oh

I won't slip, and I won't trip, send Matt Vargas to regrip
While I'm wrenchin' on my ride, in that secret pad where we hide
There's always lotsa fun stuff to do
Like relax and design a brand new tattoo
Play with my cross-word puzzle book, I'm even learning how to cook

Have you seen that little whore Betty?
Someone said she stole my Freddie
And if she made off with my last clean ring
I'm gonna kill that fuckin' ditch pig
    So what?
Outta my, outta my, outta my, outta my secret pad
'Cause I know your talkin' about me baby, makin' it hard to live
'Cause I, don't want no money dick, don't want no money down
My secret tweaker pad is now the hottest pale spot in town I guess
    Take it nice and easy
Don't want no sheriff breakin' down the door to raid me, 'cause

All that I need, look at all the love we've found
I won't run and pull the one jack move
They love her for the Kingston sound

Baby you wanna give me kisses sweet
Only for one night with no repeat
Baby you wanna leave and never go
But the taste of honey is worse than none at all

  • The lyrics indicate that STP stands for "Secret Tweaker Pad." A tweaker is someone under the influence of methamphetamines.
  • The lyrics at the end of the song are from "I Second That Emotion" by Smokey Robinson: "Baby you wanna give me kisses sweet, only for a night with no repeat. Baby you wanna leave and never go, but the taste of honey is worse than none at all."
  • On the live Stand By Your Van album, Bradley Nowell adds the word "speed" to the end of the line, "I'm even learning how to cook."

    Boomerang Lyrics

    Sitting here thinking about
All the innocent people I done hurt in my past
Relationships, never felt the slightest bit bad
    Until it happened to me
It's funny how we're so quick to laugh
    When it's someone else
But then when it happens to us
The joke is never as funny as we all thought it was
Before we felt the same thing

And it's true that it's no fun
When the rabbits got the gun
And you're in love with the one that hurts you most
They say karma is a bitch
And I say I agree with it
Cause this whole experience has let me know

That breaking a woman's heart is like throwing a Boomerang
It will come right back to you again
So remember that when it is happening to you
Don't cry when it gets hard
    Because you threw a boomerang
And it came right back to you again
So remember that when it's happening to you

Used to play a lotta games with no conscious
Couple different lovers at once with no problem
Loved the way it felt to have everyone wanting me
Now I'm sitting here tryin to be strong but I'm hurting
And the sad part of it all is I deserve this
This was meant to teach me a lesson
    It's working perfectly

Cause it's true that it's no fun
When the rabbits got the gun
And you're in love with the one that hurt you most
And they say karma is a bitch
And I say I agree with it
Cause this whole experience has let me know

That breaking a woman's heart is like throwing a boomerang
It will come right back to you again
So remember that when it is happening to you
Don't cry when it gets hard
    Because you threw a boomerang
And it came right back to you again
So remember that when it's happening to you

Hell hath no fury like a woman's scorn
And heaven won't help you hide if you break her heart
Try ya best to be honest
    Try to keep every promise
Cause in the end if it doesn't work out
    She won't wanna be friends
    And she gone want revenge

    Don't break a woman's heart, it's like throwing a boomerang
It will come right back to you again
So remember that when it is happening to you
Don't cry when it gets hard
    Because you threw a boomerang
And it came right back to you again
So remember that when it's happening to you

The track finds him considering the ramifications of bad behavior when young. "It came together when I had some time, some introspection on my life when I was incarcerated and wrote the song there," he told Artist Direct . Once Jennings got home, he constructed the song and made it available as the first single following his release.

    Bald Lyrics

It would appear that male pattern
    Baldness has set in
His hair, at an alarming pace
    Running away from his face
    He's losing his virility
    And now his masculinity
    Has been compromised
    And his libido down-sized

Not for me, not for me, not for me, uh-uh
Not for me, not for me, heaven forbid
It's not for me you understand

    Bald, slap headed and hairless
Bald he is destined to be
Bald, well tonight thank God it's him instead of me.

From what I have been reading
    His scalp needs kneading
    To stimulate each follicle
    And reverse this diabolical
    Condition that's afflicted he
    For years and has cruelly
    Repulsed each potential mate
And left him with a balding pate

Not for me, not for me, not for me, uh-uh
Not for me, not for me, heaven forbid
It's not for me you understand

    Bald, slap headed and hairless
Bald he is destined to be
Bald, well tonight thank God it's him instead of me.

Sock it to me baby, yeah!

Not for me, not for me, not for me, uh-uh
Not for me, not for me, heaven forbid
It's not for me you understand

Not for me, not for me, not for me, uh-uh
Not for me, not for me, heaven forbid
It's not for me you understand

    Bald, slap headed and hairless

  • The line, "Well tonight thank god it's him instead of me" is directed at Bono, the lead singer of U2. In the 1984, Band Aid song "Do They Know It's Christmas?," Bono sang the infamous line, "Well tonight thank god it's them instead of you." At the time One Way Ticket To Hell And Back was being recorded, lead singer Justin Hawkins and Bono quarreled after Bono gave Hawkins permission to sing his line in the remake of 'Do They Know It's Christmas" because Hawkins said Bono's voice was shaky after hearing him re-sing the line. Bono got upset and maintained that Hawkins stole the line from him and they have clashed ever since. Hawkins thought it would be funny to manipulate Bono's infamous line to deride him in song or possibly even write an entire song about his impending hair loss.

They all tell me that there’s something strange
I don’t wanna be with nobody new
All I wanna do is be with you

    Life sounds like
    I’m alive (x6)
(This is what it sounds like)
    Whoa-oh-oh, I’m alive

How come every day something jumps in the way
    Gets complicated, I feel devestated
But when I’m feeling down, I only wanna be with you
I can’t afford the rent or remember checks I sent
To pay off all my taxes and feed the president
But there’s one thing I remember, I only wanna be with you

    Life sounds like
    I’m alive (x6)
(This is what it sounds like)
    Whoa-oh-oh, I’m alive

(Break it down right here now)
You be Bonnie, I’ll be your Clyde
Hop into my car and drive like
    Fireworks, we will ignite
    Through the San Francisco night
    Like John and Yoko
    Like Ice-T and Coco
    Like Jay-Z, Beyonce
    Come be my fiance

Hey soul sister, I’ll be your mister
Don’t wanna be no one-night stand
How many ways can I say to make you understand
That I only wanna be your man

    Life sounds like
    Whoa-oh-oh
This is what it sounds like
    Whoa-oh-oh
    And it sounds like

    I’m alive (x6)
(This is what it sounds like)
    Whoa-oh-oh, I’m alive

(Bring it back one more time)

Everybody wants me to be who they want me to be except you
All I wanna do is be with you

    Life sounds like
    Whoa-oh-oh
(This is what it sounds like)
    Whoa-oh-oh
    Life sounds like, like, like…

    Life sounds like
    I’m alive (x6)
(This is what it sounds like)
    Whoa-oh-oh, I’m alive

    I'm Alive (Life Sounds Like)
  • Ostensibly a love song about finding the one person in the world who just gets him, the tune also acts as a metaphor for the bigger issues that are going on in the world today. "This is the song that was really just an expression of gratitude for being alive and wanting to live every minute to the fullest," Franti said in our 2014 interview . "I guess I wanted to get the sound of what it means to be alive rather than the ideas of what it means to be alive. That's why right before the chorus it sounds like, 'Whooaaa,' and then just turns into a melody after that."
  • On the All People album, Franti worked extensively with outside songwriters for the first time. This song he wrote with the Australian songwriter/producer Adrian Newman, who worked with Franti on three other cuts as well: "Closer To You," "Say Goodbye" and "Long Ride Home."

    Hate To Feel Lyrics

    What's gone wrong, I can't see straight
Been too long, so full of hate

What the fuck will it take
    Drown myself in my wake
    Another shaggy D.A
Now a dog, shake my leg
    Plastic man, paper face
    Candy heart, what a waste
Got to change, set a date
Eat my cake, lick my plate

Stare at me with empty eyes
And point your words at me
Mirror on the wall will show you
    What you're scared to see

I can see, yeah (wish I couldn't see at all)
I can feel (wish I couldn't feel at all)
Hate to see (wish I couldn't see at all)
Hate To Feel (wish I couldn't feel at all)

    So climb walls
    Thin my blood now
And I crawl, back to bed now

What the hell, got to rest
    Aching pain in my chest
    Lucky me, now I'm set
    Little bug for a pet
    New Orleans, got to get
    Pin cushion medicine
    Used to be curious
    Now the shit's sustenance

All this time I swore I'd never
    Be like my old man
What the hey it's time to face
    Exactly what I am

I can see, yeah (wish I couldn't see at all)
I can feel (wish I couldn't feel at all)
Hate to see (wish I couldn't see at all)
Hate to feel (wish I couldn't feel at all)

    Does it Feel Good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel real good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good

If it told that I love
Would you run away or would you run to me
I need to know it baby
If gave you all my loving would you give it back
What would you do with that
I asked a lot of that
And if gave you all my time when its the summer time
I know my down time, girl that's a lot of time
If I'm falling over you, then what you gonna do
I wanna come with you, I wanna run with you
I'd give you all my loving to you
I'd give you all my loving to you

    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel real good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good

If I partied till the morning
    Would you stay with me
Girl would you play with me
Or would you hate on me
If I ran all out of money
Would you pay for me or would you stray from me
I need to know it baby
If there's something that I could do
To make you see the light
Girl that I treat you right
    I'd do it every night
Every second that I'm with you is a special world
Like I'm your only man, and you're my only girl

I'd give you all my loving to you
I'd give you all my loving to you

    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel real good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good

    Does it feel good
    Oh babe oh darling
    Does it feel good
    Does it feel good

I'd give you all my loving to you
I'd give you all my loving to you

    Feel Good
  • This EDM-tinged track was co-written and produced by will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas. It finds Thicke interrogating his lover asking her if she'd still love him whatever he does:

"If I partied till the morning would you stay with me
Girl would you play with me, or would you hate on me
If I ran all out of money, would you pay for me or would you stray from me
I need to know it baby."

Thicke told VH1: "I actually got to sneak in some of my problems on this one. It talks about if I party too much, or if I'm not perfect, or if I'm depressed, will you still stand by me, will you help me get through those times or will you leave me?"
  • In the Sophie Muller-directed video, Thicke, along with a group of dancers, performs this against a cloudy backdrop.

    Shannon Lyrics

    Shannon
  • "Shannon" was a song written about the passing of Beach Boy Carl Wilson's Irish Setter of the same name. The song went gold and became a worldwide hit. The second single, "Springtime Mama," sold just short of gold. This was Gross' first album and first hit on the new Lifesong Record label.
  • This song was a hit in the US in 1976, but is perhaps best known for being the subject of a legendary, profanity-laced tirade by American Top 40 radio show host Casey Kasem while recording an episode of the show in 1985. A listener had requested the song as a "Long Distance Dedication" (a regular feature of the AT40 show) to his own recently-deceased dog. Kasem was upset that the show's producers had placed the dedication immediately following the Pointer Sisters' hit "Dare Me," an up-tempo song that Kasem considered a poor lead-in to a sad song like "Shannon" - and he let the producers know of his displeasure in no uncertain terms. In the end, the dedication, and the mismatched songs, were presented as scripted in spite of Kasem's objection, but the outtake of his rant eventually surfaced as a bootleg recording. The so-called "Snuggles tape" (named for the dog to whom the dedication was made) contradicted Kasem's normally straight-laced, easygoing on-air persona, and provided an amusing footnote to his 18-year-long run as the show's original host.
  • The falsetto vocals on "Shannon" were written because Gross was a big fan of Beach Boy member Brian Wilson and was influenced by his singing style.

    Top Of The World Lyrics

    Yeah, Robin Thicke
    You know how it goes

    Come on come on
Now you feeling like a pimp,
You got everything you want, no wonder
    Come on come on
    'Cause you never gave up,
Now you singing that song all summer
I'm on Top Of The World, on top of the world
I'm on top of the world, on top of the world
I'm on top of the world, on top of the world
I'm on top of the world, top of the world

She was a little girl picked on in school
    Yeah she had funny teeth
All the kids called her tooth head
Years later when her moms got sick,
She did everything she could, but mama wasn't rich
She didn't stop, worked ten different jobs yeah
That put her through community college
Waitress, retail, hot dog on a stick
Telling herself that it won't end like this
Now she the boss, she the boss, she the boss
You see her riding up, yeah you know what it cost
Now she the one with the smile on her face
'Cause no one gave it to her, she earned that feeling

    Come on come on
Now you feeling like a pimp,
You got everything you want, no wonder
    Come on come on
    'Cause you never gave up,
Now you singing that song all summer
I'm on top of the world, on top of the world
I'm on top of the world, on top of the world
I'm on top of the world, on top of the world
I'm on top of the world, top of the world

Now she wanna find love, and she can
Somebody who can hold umbrellas in the rain
But she's a little hardcore with the pros,
Could be goodbye goodbye before it's hello hello
Before you say a word, better have a breathe
Sitting with mine, if you have it ooh
    I'm a sometime, but she's a lifestyle
I got a big hammer, but baby's a hard rock

    Come on come on
Now you feeling like a pimp,
You got everything you want, no wonder
    Come on come on
    'Cause you never gave up,
Now you singing that song all summer
I'm on top of the world, on top of the world
I'm on top of the world, on top of the world
I'm on top of the world, on top of the world
I'm on top of the world, top of the world

(Baby) on top of it, (Baby) on top of it,
(Baby) she's on top of it, (Baby) on top of it

Yeah sometimes that's just how it goes
Now she well paid first class top grade
Go to sleep by herself only with the front page
Dreaming of the one thing she ain't got yet
That's somebody to hold when the sun sets
She start taking them pills just to feel good,
It's hard enough to be what she once was, keep it real
But she remembers how tough it was to get her
She can't be so hard on herself, yeah

You need a good time baby girl let it go
You need a good time baby girl let it go
You still so young, good times, let it go
You still so young, good times, let it go

    Come on come on
Now you feeling like a pimp,
You got everything you want, no wonder
    Come on come on
    'Cause you never gave up,
Now you singing that song all summer
I'm on top of the world, on top of the world
I'm on top of the world, on top of the world

  • Thicke tells the rags-to-riches story on this song of a woman who despite achieving power and wealth is still lonely. He told VH1: "It's similar to 'Ain't No Hat 4 That,' about a professional woman who has been a little hardened. She's having a tough time finding the right man to love. That song is about being on top of the world, but needing that one more thing to be happy."

    Underneath It All Lyrics

There's times where I want something more
    Someone more like me
There's times when this dress rehearsal
    Seems incomplete
But, you see the colors in me like no one else
And behind your dark glasses you're
    You're something else

    You're really lovely
    Underneath It All
    You want to love me
    Underneath it all
    I'm really lucky
    Underneath it all
    You're really lovely

You know some real bad tricks
    And you need some discipline
But, lately you've been trying real hard
    And giving me your best
And, you give me the most gorgeous sleep
    That I've ever had
    And when it's really bad
I guess it's not that bad

    You're really lovely
    Underneath it all
    You want to love me
    Underneath it all
    I'm really lucky
    Underneath it all
    You're really lovely

So many moons that we have seen
    Stumbling back next to me
I've seen right through and underneath
    And you make me better
I've seen right through and underneath
    And you make me better
    Better better

You are my real Prince Charmin'
Like the heat from the fire
    You were always burnin'
    And each time you're around
    My body keeps callin
    For your touch
Your kisses and your sweet romancin'
    There's an underside to you
that this here woman that adore
    Aside from your temper
    Everything is secure
    You're good for me, baby
    of that, I'm sure
    Over and over again
    I want more

You've used up all your coupons
And all you've got left is me
And somehow I'm full of forgiveness
I guess it's meant to be

    You're really lovely
    Underneath it all
    You want to love me
    Underneath it all
    I'm really lucky
    Underneath it all
    You're really lovely

    You're really lovely
    Underneath it all
    You want to love me

    Underneath It All
  • No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani wrote this with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame. They were introduced by Jimmy Iovine, who is good friends with Stewart and chairman of Interscope, which is No Doubt's label. The band came over to Stewart's apartment in London, and he and Gwen went to the kitchen with their acoustic guitars and completed the song in about 15 minutes. Stewart wrote of Stefani in The Dave Stewart Songbook : "She really has great melodic sensibility and uses her subconscious to express herself lyrically. She sings freeform stream-of-consciousness at first but there are always words that appear to be coming from an emotional place. She then quickly understands what she wants to say and it all falls into place. 'Underneath It All' was an example of this and I saw it happen in real time right there in my kitchen."
  • In our interview with Dave Stewart, he spoke about the difference between writing with his Eurythmics partner Annie Lennox, and writing with Stefani, who he had just met. Says Stewart: "Well, it's kind of weird. Because if I walk into a room to write with Gwen, Gwen comes with a lot of stuff attached to her, and I also come into a room with that. So the first 15 minutes usually is getting past that stuff. And then very quickly, and usually due to a certain courtship, you know like how a certain chord can change the temperature in a room? It evokes a certain emotion in me or in Gwen, and then it'll suddenly make us think about something that happened in her life, and something that she might want to talk about, something she might not want to talk about, but you can kind of hear what it is in the lyric and the melody. And soon, within an hour and a half it's as if you've known that person for years. And often, then, people start talking about all their private thoughts, and everything that's going on in their life usually comes rolling out."
  • In a 2002 interview in Rolling Stone, Stefani explained that her lyrics were inspired by her relationship with Gavin Rossdale of the band Bush, who she was madly in love with and later married. They spent some time in a part the previous day, and Stefani wrote in her journal: "You're lovely underneath it all."
  • Gwen Stefani and Dave Stewart hadn't met before the day they wrote this song, but they had a lot in common and bonded quickly. They both had intimate relationships with a band member who they broke up with, but continued working with: Stewart with Annie Lennox and Stefani with No Doubt bass player Tony Kanal. They share a love of Jamaican music, and are big fans of Sophie Muller, who has directed videos for Eurythmics and No Doubt.
  • This track features a rap by the Jamaican Dancehall deejay Lady Saw. In 2003 she became the first female deejay to win a Grammy when this won the Grammy for Best Performance by a Duo or Group with a Vocal.
  • Sophie Muller, who directed the video, wanted to show what Stefani was like "underneath it all." She explained to Music Video Wire : "She started off with tons of make-up and hair, kind of really over done like a stripper. As the video proceeds she loses her make up and at the end the make up and overdone look is gone. The idea was stripping back to being your simple self. We had to do it using visual metaphors. She was going to be talking her clothes off, but that made it too complicated. Instead we made it into sections where in each section she was less made up."

Muller enlisted the directing collaborative Logan to create special effects, like the band riding bicycles in Jamaica as a nod to Lady Saw's influence.

Well of course I miss you, baby
    I've been thinking lately
That you don't need me anymore
You'd be better with Fred Astaire
    He could take you anywhere
    If you ask him to

    And God knows
    That its a common misconception
That I'm the only one for you
And I could take you out for breakfast
But he could take you 'round the world

Fred Astaire's the man for you

Well, he could buy you a diamond ring
Or he could get you anything
    If you ask him to
He probably know how to dance
And he could fly you to France
And you could do it all night long
