Keith penned this bouncy, Bluegrass cut with frequent collaborator Scotty Emerick . The song features harmonica, banjo and honky tonk rhythms. "This is the kind of stuff I wish would work on the radio," commented Keith. "This reminds me of growing up, cutting your teeth in the Texas and Oklahoma beer joints and seeing these singer/songwriters come through - Red Steagall, Guy Clark and those kinds of guys 30 years ago. It just reminds me of that old cowboy country and melody. We put a pretty good lyric on it."
The subject of the song remains stuck in an old fashioned lifestyle. "'Last Living Cowboy' is more along the stuff that I normally do," Keith told Radio.com . "Talking about this old man that's in the modern day and he's still hanging on to the last century values and fashion. It's comical."
