Where's Your Head At? Lyrics

Where's your head at, at, at, at?
Where's Your Head At?
Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?

Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?

Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?

Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?

Don't let the walls
Cave in on you
We can't evolve alone
Without you

Don't let the walls
Cave in on you
We can't evolve alone
Without you

Don't let the walls
Cave in on you
You get what you give
That much is true

Don't let the walls
Cave in on you
You turned the world away
From you

Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?

Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?

You have found yourself
Trapped in this
Incomprehensible maze
Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?

Don't make it easy on yourself
Where's your head at?
Got to get
Got to get
Got to get
Got to get

Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?

Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?

Don't let the walls
Cave in on you
We can't evolve alone
Without you

Don't let the walls
Cave in on you
We can't evolve alone
Without you

Where's your head at?
Where's your head at?
We can't evolve alone
Without you
We can't evolve alone
Without you

Where's Your Head At?
  • This was a huge international hit for Basement Jaxx, which is a UK dance/production duo formed in London by DJs Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe. Buxton, who writes most of their lyrics, told us this song is about "Losing control and about states of anxiousness," adding, "Basically, they're the same divide between sanity and madness."
  • The hook comes from a sample of Gary Numan's track "M.E." from his 1979 album The Pleasure Principle.
  • Damien Peachey is the lead vocalist on this song. Never heard of him? That's typical of Basement Jaxx, who use a variety of singers - many unknown - on their tracks.

And also typical, the duo adjusted the song to suit Peachey's personality. They took some time to get to know him and tweaked the words so he would be for comfortable singing them.
  • The football (soccer) chant chorus was provided by US house DJs Erick Morillo and Junior Sanchez.
  • The video contains a dig at the smugness of the dance music industry when a performing monkey band with human faces becomes the future of music. It was praised by Mixmag magazine as the best dance music video ever made. The video was shot over three days in a real mental hospital in Prague with some vicious monkeys.

The clip was directed by the Scandinavian team Traktor and stars Damian Samuels as the ill-fated record executive.
  • The refrain in this song started out as "Where are my dogs at?," which didn't fit the theme of the song (madness), but sounded great. Late one night, Buxton thought to himself, "Where's my head at?," and it clicked for him that the hook should be "Where's Your Head At?"

"That song was like a bit of a puzzle and it kind of grew into being," he told us.
  • This was featured in the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

How Do You Get That Lonely Lyrics

It was just another story written on the second page
    Underneath the Tiger's football score
It said he was only eighteen, a boy about my age
They found him face down on his bedroom floor
There'll be services on Friday at the Lawrence Funeral Home
Then out on Mooresville highway, they'll lay him 'neath a stone...
How Do You Get That Lonely, how do you hurt that bad
To make you make the call, that havin' no life at all
Is better than the life that you had
How do you feel so empty, you want to let it all go
How do you get that lonely... and nobody know
Did his girlfriend break up with him, did he buy or steal that gun?
Did he lose a fight with drugs or alcohol?
Did his Mom and Daddy forget to say I love you son?
Did no one see the writing on the wall?
I'm not blamin' anybody, we all do the best we can
    I know hindsight's 20/20, but I still don't understand...
How do you get that lonely, how do you hurt that bad
To make you make the call, that havin' no life at all
Is better than the life that you had
How do you feel so empty, you want to let it all go
How do you get that lonely... and nobody know
It was just another story printed on the second page
    Underneath the Tiger's football score...

How Do You Get That Lonely
  • This song was written by Rory Lee Feek and Jamie Teachener after Rory got a call from his daughter's school. They told Rory his daughter wanted to come home because her friend's boyfriend killed himself, and they found the body that morning.
  • A few years after this song was released, Rory started recording with his wife as Joey + Rory. They recorded "Album Number Two," which Rory wrote for Larsen, but was rejected. Another one Rory wrote that Larsen turned down was "A Little More Country Than That," which Easton Corbin recorded in 2009.

When I See You Smile Lyrics

    Sometimes I wonder
If I'd ever make it through
    Through this world
    without having in you
    I just wouldn't have a clue
    Cause sometimes it seems
Like this world's closing in on me
And there's no way of breaking free
And then I see you reach for me
Sometimes I want to give up
    want to give in
I want to quit the fight
And then I see you baby
    And everything's alright
    Everything's alright
    When I See You Smile
    I can face the world
Oh you know I can do anything
    When I see you smile
I see a ray of light
    Oh I see it shining
    right through the rain
    When I see you smile
Baby when I see you smile at me
    Oh yeah
Baby there's nothing in this world that could ever do
What the touch of your hand can do
It's like nothing that I ever knew
    Hey
And when the rain is falling
    I don't feel it
Cause you're here with me now
I want to ask you baby
    It's all I'll ever need
    All I'll ever need
    When I see you smile
    I can face the world
Oh you know I can do anything
    When I see you smile
I see a ray of light
    Oh I see it shining
    right through the rain
When I see you smile baby
Baby when I see you smile at me
Sometimes I want to give up
    I want to give in
I want to quit the fight
Then one look at you baby
    And everything's alright
    Hey everything's alright
    It's alright
    When I see you smile
    I can face the world
Oh you know I can do anything
    When I see you smile
I see a ray of light
    Oh I see it shining
    right through the rain
    Yeah
    When I see you smile
Yeah I can face the world
Oh you know I can do anything now
    When I see you smile
    Oh yeah
Baby when I see you smile
    Smile at me

    When I See You Smile
  • Bad English was a supergroup comprised of lead singer John Waite, keyboard player Jonathan Cain, bass player Ricky Phillips, guitarist Neal Schon and drummer Deen Castronovo. Waite, Cain and Phillips had been in a popular British band called the Babys, while Schon, Castronovo and Cain were in Journey (Cain was in both groups). It was quite an assemblage of musical talent, and between them they wrote 11 of the 13 songs on their self-titled debut album. "When I See You Smile" wasn't one of them.

The song was written by Diane Warren, who had a knack for supplying popular Rock musicians with Pop hits: she wrote "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" for Starship, "Who Will You Run To" for Heart, and "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" for Aerosmith. She had also written the song "Don't Lose Any Sleep," which appeared on Waite's 1987 solo album Rover's Return.

The band was signed to Epic Records, whose A&R man Don Grierson implored them to record a hit. They liked him, so when he suggested "When I See You Smile," the band agreed to record it, since they knew it would supply Grierson with his hit.
  • This is by far the biggest hit for Bad English, but it's not their only one. Their first single was "Forget Me Not," which made #45 in the US. "When I See You Smile" was their next release, and "Price of Love" came next, charting at #5. They released one more album (Backlash, 1991) before terminating the project. In our John Waite interview , he explained: "It was fun for a year. And then people reverted to type. I think the Journey guys wanted to be back in Journey and I wanted to be back solo. We had a very valiant attempt at making a second record, but we weren't given enough time to write it. We tried, and we almost made it."

    Going Away To College Lyrics

Please take me by the hand
    It's so cold out tonight
I'll put blankets on the bed
I won't turn out the light
Just don't forget to think about me
    And I won't forget you
I'll write you once a week she said

Why does it feel the same
To fall in love or break it off
And if young love is just a game
Then I must have missed the kick off
Don't depend on me to ever follow through on anything
But I'd go through hell for you and

I haven't been this scared in a long time
And I'm so unprepared so here's your valentine
Bouquet of clumsy words, a simple melody
This world's an ugly place, but you're so beautiful to me

    I'll think about the times
    She kissed me after class
And she put up with my friends
    I acted like an ass
I'd ditch my lecture to watch the girls play soccer
Is my picture still hanging in her locker?

I haven't been this scared in a long time
And I'm so unprepared so here's your valentine
Bouquet of clumsy words, a simple melody
This world's an ugly place, but you're so beautiful

    Beware Lyrics

When you said it was over
You shot right through my heart
Why you let these hoes tear what we had right apart
    Ooh, I was so mad
I could've seen this coming right from the start
You should Beware, beware, beware of a women with a broken heart

Praying to a sky all black
Looking at the stars like they finna talk back
Looking at my phone like she finna call back
But last night I feel like probably ended all that
Cause by now she woulda sent a text in all caps
Then another one tryna take all back
Saying fuck you, I miss you or I hate you so much
Cause girls only say "hate you" to the guys they love
    I know, I know, I know
The highs, the lows it comes and goes
You say "be real" I try, I don't
Cause you take anything and just make it everything
Kept my phone on silent ever since you got a ring (funny right?)
And I never cheated (I mean, maybe once, twice)
    One time don't change everything
She ask why I don't feel the same, I'm still the same
She's still insane and now she's saying

When you said it was over
You shot right through my heart
Why you let these hoes tear what we had right apart
    Ooh, I was so mad
I could've seen this coming right from the start
You should beware, beware, beware of a women with a broken heart

    Okay, skeet, smoke
    Sleep, call
    Miss, text
    Woke, spoke
    Lie, feel, Lisa ew
    Time, kill, months, still
I got somebody baby mama calling me daddy
I drank too much, please call me a cabby
Penthouse after party hoes want that addy
Fuck they can ride with us, crawl in a Caddy
Third row is when you call, I hit cancel
Really? I hit answer, fuck I hate when that happens
Phone in my pocket for the whole night
And you heard bitches screamin' til my phone dies
Then she text me like "why you still talk to my mama?"
How the fuck you run around with condoms?
Why you make me get this tattoo?
Man, fuck this tattoo you the reason I wasn't single in college
What? all because I had you
Nigga I don't even have you
How am I suppose to get past you?
And she called the next guy spillin' some real shit
Now they problems he got to deal with

When you said it was over
You shot right through my heart
Why you let these hoes tear what we had right apart
    Ooh, I was so mad
I could've seen this coming right from the start
You should beware, beware, beware of a women with a broken heart

    Girl, don't believe them hoes
Cause they don't wanna see us together
And you already know you're too fly
But baby, don't get your hair caught in the propellers
I be tryna tell her these hoes is jealous
You know they never like it when you never say never
Long hair, red bone, but her pussy is hairless
Muah, I french kiss it like we in Paris
I be screaming out, "ain't no woman like the one I got"
But she be always worrying about the one I fucked
She said it's gonna be me, myself and I
Damn, that would make me a one-eyed fuck
    Sch, I was so mad
Damn, you used to ride a nigga like a moped
But players fuck up, my bad
And just to keep from crying, I laughed

When you said it was over
You shot right through my heart
Why you let these hoes tear what we had right apart
    Ooh, I was so mad
I could've seen this coming right from the start

    Beware
  • This song features a guest appearance from rapper Lil Wayne whilst Los Angeles singer-songwriter Jhené Aiko joins Sean on the hook. Aiko previously collaborated with Big Sean when she provided vocals for "I'm Gonna Be" (a track from his mixtape Detroit) and she also hooked up with J. Cole on his Born Sinner track, "Sparks Will Fly."
  • The song was produced by frequent collaborator Key Wane and finds Sean giving insight into a former relationship on this cautionary love tale:

"When you said it was over, you shot right through my heart
Why you let these hoes tear what we had right apart
Ooh, I was so mad, I should've seen this coming right from the start
You should beware, beware, beware of a woman with a broken heart"

Big Sean's lover couldn't deal with all the jealous girls who were after the rapper and ended the relationship,. Now he has to face the consequences of his brokenhearted ex.
  • The song contains an interpolation of The Four Tops' 1973 hit single, "Ain't No Woman (Like The One I've Got)," which was originally recorded by Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds the previous year.

The way she bounce both cheekies
Boy, she freaky, shoulda known she was kinky
When I walked inside the room and I seen that slinky
Even made me use my pinky the way she teach me
It's just so dreamy, oh God, damn, man
I cheat on tests, cheat on hoes I cheat when I can
I'm even cheating on my whip, I got a side Benz
But she made me wanna cut off all my side friends (I love you, baby)
A nigga be tryna taste her, take her
They rape her, stand out the daycare sit there and wait there
Fuck, I can't even trust the neighbors, damn (what you lookin' at?)

Now what you got for me Sean?
    I heard it's big and it's long
I take my teeth out, suck it good
    That's where your dick belong

    Throw a hundred every time
I think my coupe just lost its mind
Put yo mama on that trippy shit, sippin' lean, snorting lines
    Overseas like bonjour
Last ten years I've been on tour
And I still got that old money
I touch more green than a lawnmower
With a ratchet bitch, you laid up
I'm on my tour bus fucking mamas getting paid up
I take that bitch to my mansion
And a nigga can't pay her to leave
Yo mama a great head doctor, with no PhD
My pockets stuffed with that dough
I made it all in the streets
I might just go to the club, and throw it all on a freak

  • The song title stands for "Mom I Like to F--k". No one has nailed down the origin of the acronym but it was popularized by Jennifer Coolidge's character, "Stifler's Mom" in the hit movie series American Pie.
  • Big Sean recruited Nicki Minaj and Juicy J for this Da Internz produced slinky ode to MILFs. He explained at the album's listening party that his aim was to recreate the fun of his hit stripper anthem "Dance (A$$)," even re-using its signature handclaps.

Da Internz produced "Dance (A$$)," whilst Nicki Minaj featured on the remix.
  • Sean told MTV News that he didn't take too kindly to his single mom's boyfriends, and now that he's dated a few single moms himself, he sees the other side. "When I was a young kid and I saw my mom with boyfriends, I used to hate her being with boyfriends," Sean explained. "It's crazy how the tables turn."

"I just wanted to convey that message in a song. I just wanted to get that moment, because that's a moment in society. That's something that really goes on, and that's what the song is about," he added. "It's just about a crazy-ass mom, going wild and I do think it's funny, but I think it's real as hell too. And that's what I try to do with every song on the album, just keep it real as possible."

    Famous Last Words Lyrics

Sitting here in Avalon, looking at the pouring rain
Summertime has come and gone and everybody's home again

Closing down for the season, I found the last of the souvenirs
I can still taste the wedding cake and it's sweet after all these years

These are the last words I have to say
That's why this took so long to write
There will be other words some other day
But that's the story of my life

There's comfort in my coffee cup and apples in the early fall
They're pulling all the moorings up and gathering at the Legion Hall
They swept away all the streamers after the Labor Day parade
Nothing left for a dream now, only one final serenade

And these are the last words I have to say
    Before another age goes by
With all those other songs I'll have to play
But that's the story of my life

And it's so clear standing here where I am
Ain't that what justice is for?
Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn anymore

Stack the chairs on the table tops
Hang the sheets on the chandeliers
It slows down but it never stops
Ain't it sweet after all these years

And these are the last words I have to say
It's always hard to say goodbye
But now it's time to put this book away
And that's the story of my life

These are the last words I have to say
That's why this took so long to write
There will be other words some other day
Ain't that the story of my life

These are the last words I have to say

  • By the time Billy Joel came to record River Of Dreams, he had become disillusioned with the music business. He sings on the album's closing track:.

"These are the last words I have to say
That's why this took so long to write
There will be other words some other day
But that's the story of my life"

Co-producer Danny Kortchmar explained in Mojo magazine: "He was intimating that he might be running out of ideas and becoming less happy with writing Pop songs. That's why the last song on the album is called 'Famous Last Words.'"

    We Sway
Grabbed her by the hips and hand
    Then off we went
    Across the sanded floor
She said "that's not sand, it's salt
It will get worn like we did before"

I only wanna dance with you
    Every time I try
We only get an hour or so
    It's time to get personal
We've got these times of our lives
Lets take this time to let it show
    these are ours.

    These are ours

    We sway
    The moon shines down
    And everybody's safe.
    Christmas lights all day
    And rightly so
    We feel high as fuck
    And everything is good
    Good to go

I watch the snow fall down
    Feels great to be honest
    Forget about the trouble
    Forget about the drama
    Cause I ain't Casanova
Baby I can dance for days
    This time with you
Is just amazing in so many ways

I only wanna dance with you
    Every time I try
We only get an hour or so
    It's time to get personal
We've got these times of our lives
Lets take this time to let it show
    these are ours.

    These are ours

We'll stay until we want to
That's how it use to be
    We never fell apart
We stay here until we want to
    Now we just sway

    Come on
    Dance with me

    These,
    These are ours
    These,
    These are ours

    We sway

    Sway
  • This is the title track of Blue October's seventh studio album, Sway. It was recorded at Fire Station Studio in San Marcos, Texas with co-producer David Castell in February and March 2013. The band's previous record, 2011's Any Man In America, was dark and moody, having been heavily influenced by frontman Justin Furstenfeld's failed marriage and custody battle for his daughter. Sway, on the other hand, reflects the singer-guitarist's more upbeat state of mind. He explained to MusicRadar.com that the overall theme of the album is about "the light at the end of the tunnel."

Furstenfeld added: "You only have so much time on this earth, so you need to live it up and be proactive with your life. Whether it's depression or whatever it is you're going through, there has to be a solution to the problem. And if there isn't a solution, then what are we here for? The only reasons why we're here are to be happy, joyous and free."

I love to love you baby
I love to love you baby.

    I'm feelin' sexy
I wanna hear you say my name boy
    If you can reach me
You can feel my burning flame

    Naughty Girl
  • This samples the 1975 Donna Summer song Love To Love You Baby and borrows heavily from the 1982 song "Nasty Girl" by The Vanity 6. Like those 2 songs, this is explicitly sexual.
  • Beyoncé enjoyed massive success with her group Destiny's Child, and Dangerously In Love was her first solo album. This was going to be the first single, but it was pushed back in favor of "Crazy In Love."

    Do you hear the thunder
    Raging in the sky?
    Premonition of a
    Shattered world that's gonna die

    In the Age Of Reason
    how do we survive?
    The protocols of evil
    Ravaging so many lives?
    So many lives
    So many lives

    Mystifying silence
    Talking Peace on Earth
    We should judge each other
For ourselves not what we're worth

    Sustainable extinction
    A fractured human race
    A jaded revolution
    Disappears without a trace
    without a trace
    without a trace
    Alrigth yeah

Always felt that there'd be trouble
    Mass distraction hides the truth
    Prozac days and sleepless hours
Seeds of change that don't bear fruit

    oh yeah,
    these time are heavy
    And you're all alone
    The battle's over
    But the war goes on

    Politics, religion
    Love of money too

    Age Of Reason
  • This song is a journey through several movements of various tempos and riffs. Its raw sound has been compared by some critics to that of Jimi Hendrix, which guitarist Tony Iommi told SF Weekly was because producer Rick Rubin wanted him to play his solos live. "I haven't done so for years," he said. "I've normally put the backing track down, then go in and put solos down. And I'm going, 'Well, I don't really know what I'm going to play yet.' And he'd go, 'Well, just try something.' He encouraged me to try different things, and that's what happened on 'Age of Reason' and 'Damaged Soul.'"

    Night Fever Lyrics

    Listen to the ground
    There is movement all around
    There is something goin' down
    And I can feel it

On the waves of the air
    There is dancin' out there
If it's somethin' we can share
    We can steal it

    And that sweet city woman
    She moves through the light
Controlling my mind and my soul
When you reach out for me
Yeah, and the feelin' is right

Then I get Night Fever, night fever
We know how to do it
Gimme that night fever, night fever
We know how to show it

    Here I am
Prayin' for this moment to last
Livin' on the music so fine
    Borne on the wind
    Makin' it mine

    Night fever, night fever
We know how to do it
Gimme that night fever, night fever
We know how to show it

In the heat of our love
Don't need no help for us to make it
Gimme just enough to take us to the mornin'
I got fire in my mind
I get higher in my walkin'
And I'm glowin' in the dark
    I give you warnin'

    And that sweet city woman
    She moves through the night

    Night Fever
  • In 1977, The Bee Gees manager Robert Stigwood was producing a movie about the New York Disco scene. The working title of the film was "Saturday Night," so he asked the group to write a song of that name. The Bee Gees thought it was a dumb title, but they had already written a song called "Night Fever." They convinced Stigwood to use that and change the film's title to Saturday Night Fever. The movie became a classic, telling a coming-of-age story in the Disco era. It helped launch the film career of John Travolta, who starred as Tony Manero, the conflicted youth who escaped his troubles on the dance floor.
  • The soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever sold over 30 million copies worldwide and it won the 1978 Grammy for Album Of The Year. This was the third single from the soundtrack and became that album's biggest hit single, remaining on the top of the American Pop charts for 8 weeks in early 1978. It also topped the British charts for two weeks and won a 1978 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance By A Group.
  • The string intro is inspired by "Theme From A Summer Place" by Percy Faith. The Bee Gees keyboard player was performing it one morning at the studio and Barry Gibb walked in and heard the new idea for this song.
  • Robin Gibb in Observer Music Monthly January 2008: "The idea for the film that became Saturday Night Fever started when our manager, Robert Stigwood, saw an article in New York magazine entitled 'Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night' by Nik Cohn, talking about teenagers going to dancing competitions. When they first started dance rehearsals for the film with John Travolta, they were using our song 'You Should Be Dancing,' which had been released the previous year. We were mixing a live album in France and Robert rang and asked if we had any other songs we could contribute. In the end we had five new tracks - 'Staying Alive,' 'How Deep is Your Love?,' 'Night Fever,' 'More Than a Woman' and 'If I Can't Have You' (recorded by Yvonne Elliman) - plus the previously released 'Jive Talkin" and 'You Should Be Dancing.' It was also our idea to call it Saturday Night Fever, because the competitions were on Saturday and we already had the track 'Night Fever.'

Until the film came out, 'Disco' meant something very different in the UK to the US. We were writing what we considered to be blue-eyed soul. We never set out to make ourselves the kings of Disco, although plenty of other people tried to jump on the bandwagon after the success of the film. When we went to the premiere at the Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles it was obvious the film and the songs really gelled, but none of us had any idea how huge it would become. It remains the biggest-selling soundtrack ever, and very few artists have created something with the cultural impact that Saturday Night Fever had."
  • In America, with eight weeks on top of the chart, it spent more weeks at #1 than any other song in 1978. For five of those weeks (March 18 - April 15), another Bee Gees song from Saturday Night Fever, "Stayin' Alive," was #2.

You'll end up old and lonely

    Good Luck good luck
Good luck in your new bed

    You sold me sold me
Sold me down the river now
    Hope you're feeling happy now

    Good Luck
  • This song tells the story of a woman getting her no-good boyfriend out of her life. Felix Buxton of Basement Jaxx wrote the lyric. "It was from the perspective of my girlfriend singing to me," he said in our interview . "I was having a go at myself from another person's perspective."
  • Lisa Kekaula from the American group The Bellrays provided vocals on this track. Basement Jaxx brought her to England to sing a different track, "Plug It In," but it didn't work out. They wanted to make use of her talents, so on the morning before she left, the duo quickly put a song together, which became "Good Luck." It had the "old-soul" feel that suited Kekaula's voice, and the singer nailed it.
  • Kekaula stars in the video as a prison guard whose ex arrives as an inmate. It was helmed by the UK director
Mat Kirkby, who also did the Basement Jaxx video for "You Don't Know Me" and the Muse video for "Hysteria."

    The Longest Time Lyrics

    Oh, oh, oh
    For The Longest Time
    Oh, oh, oh
    For the longest
If you said goodbye to me tonight
There would still be music left to write
    What else could I do
    I'm so inspired by you
That hasn't happened for the longest time

Once I thought my innocence was gone
Now I know that happiness goes on
    That's where you found me
When you put your arms around me
I haven't been there for the longest time

    Oh, oh, oh
    For the longest time
    Oh, oh, oh
    For the longest
I'm that voice you're hearing in the hall
And the greatest miracle of all
    Is how I need you
And how you needed me too
That hasn't happened for the longest time

Maybe this won't last very long
    But you feel so right
    And I could be wrong
Maybe I've been hoping too hard
    But I've gone this far
And it's more than I hoped for

Who knows how much further we'll go on
Maybe I'll be sorry when you're gone
    I'll take my chances
I forgot how nice romance is
I haven't been there for the longest time

I had second thoughts at the start
    I said to myself
    Hold on to your heart
Now I know the woman that you are
    You're wonderful so far
And it's more than I hoped for

I don't care what consequence it brings
I have been a fool for lesser things
    I want you so bad
I think you ought to know that
I intend to hold you for the longest time

    The Longest Time
  • This song would be considered "next-to" a cappella - it contains only one actual instrument, that being a bass guitar. Everything else is voice, finger snaps and claps.

The song is a tribute to the Doo-Wop sounds of the '50s that Joel loved, complete with lyrics about being crazy in love with a girl. The song began, however, as a classical piano piece Joel was working on, which is also how is song "Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)" came about.
  • Joel did all the vocal tracks himself, which required him to cover a lot of range. The original plan was to bring in a vocal group to sing it with him, but that didn't work out. Joel's producer Phil Ramone told Billy that their best option was for him to do it all himself.
  • On the TV show Family Guy, this song was used in a flashback to discuss the invention of singing. It showed several cavemen sitting around grunting, until they all spontaneously break out into this song.
  • The song got a lot of airplay in Philadelphia, where Joel was always a very popular artist. It was even played on Soul stations there, and the song became a favorite of the guys who would later form the vocal group Boyz II Men. When Howard Stern hosted a Billy Joel town hall special in 2014, Boyz II Men performed this song. They explained that when they were going to high school, most of the selections for acapella groups were much older songs, but this one was "the most contemporary song we could sing and still be cool."
  • In the music video, directed by Jay Dubin, Joel sits alone after his high school reunion, class of '59, and recalls the good old days with his doo-wop group. Fans have been wondering about the janitor in the clip for years. Was he an old-school doo-wop star making a sly cameo? Dubin told us the answer , along with an unfortunate reminder of black stereotypes in the '80s:

"No, that's all bulls--t," he said of the rumors. "This is how that guy gets hired: There was this black guy who got us all this talent on one of the other music videos, I think 'Tell Her About It.' I remember he used to come in the office all the time saying, 'Hey, you got any work for me?'

[Producer] Jon Small said, 'No, but I need an older guy who looks like a janitor.' He said, 'No problem.' He gets on the phone: 'Uncle Willy? you want to be on TV?'

'Yeah, Uncle Willy'll do it.' He says to Jon, 'How much?' Jon says, 'A hundred dollars.' He says, 'Uncle Willy, I'll make you fifty dollars!' He took fifty and gave Uncle Willy fifty. That's all I remember about that. [Laughing]

Who the guy was, I have no idea. Was it racist? Absolutely. Back then, 8 out of 10 janitors at the local schools were black. They wanted to do that.

All I had to do was make sure the pictures looked good, he was in sync, and it was edited well. That was all I had to do. It was easy."
  • This is the only song with the word "Longest" in the title ever to chart on the Hot 100.

I'm sure as fuck, so fuck hopefully

Is what not to say at this time
Sometimes, the truth ain't what you need to hear
And you tell them they alright, when they need a cure
I'mma believe in paradise if I don't see the sand
Only palm trees I got is this weed off in my hand
Around the same time my mom said "Sean, you need a plan
Mrs. Freeman's son, across the street got shot
    Now she need a hand!"
Traumatized, gotta watch, his momma cry
Now I gotta look up, up in his momma eyes, and gotta tell his momma lies
Like, "It's gonna be alright," knowing it ain't alright
I know there's just so much pain, and there's probably more on the way

Now, when the world's ablaze, the stars will fall

Say its going to be, alright
    It's going to be, alright

Just tell me it'll be, tell me it'll be
Tell me it'll be, tell me it'll be
Just tell me it'll be, tell me it'll be
Tell me it'll be, tell me it'll be, tell me it'll be

You know I love you momma like she mine
Whether we together, or we trying
We fuck, three times, we smoke, tree times
We climb, I left, came back in town, it wasn't in time
The cancer done came, it just hit it's prime
It came from the breast, just spread to the spine
It might make her blind, she stare at the blinds
    "This can't be my mom!"
Got me thinking, "whats a girl to do, a girl to do?
    When her world's a pool?
And she comes up for air, and it's walls of flames
And all the stress is all propane
    She's burned again"
Hoping I could make her smile
Take cancer and David Blaine it out
POOF! Disappear, God make an out!

Now, when the world's ablaze, the stars will fall
    The lights go off
Say its going to be, alright
    It's going to be, alright
Cause, when the world's ablaze, the stars will fall
    The lights go off
Say its going to be, alright
    It's going to be, alright

Just tell me it'll be, tell me it'll be
Tell me it'll be, tell me it'll be, tell me it'll be
Just tell me it'll be, tell me it'll be
Tell me it'll be, tell me it'll be, tell me it'll be

Stay close to me, so close to me
That's how it's supposed to be
Long as you've been knowing me
    You been holding me down
I'm sure as fuck, so fuck hopefully
I watch over you, you watch over me
And that's how it's supposed to be
    And we are, alright

Stay close to me, so close to me
That's how it's supposed to be
Long as you've been knowing me
    You been holding me down
I'm sure as fuck, so fuck hopefully
I watch over you, you watch over me
And that's how it's supposed to be
    And we are, alright

Stay close to me, so close to me
That's how it's supposed to be
Long as you've been knowing me
    You been holding me down
I'm sure as fuck, so fuck hopefully
I watch over you, you watch over me
And that's how it's supposed to be
    And we are, alright

    The Way It Is Lyrics

    Standing in line marking time--
    Waiting for the welfare dime
'Cause they can't buy a job
The man in the silk suit hurries by
As he catches the poor old ladies' eyes
Just for fun he says "Get a job"

That's just The Way It Is
    Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
    But don't you believe them

They say hey little boy you can't go
    Where the others go
'Cause you don't look like they do
Said hey old man how can you stand
    To think that way
Did you really think about it
    Before you made the rules
    He said, Son

That's just the way it is
    Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
    But don't you believe them

Well they passed a law in '64
To give those who ain't got a little more
But it only goes so far
    Because the law another's mind
When all it sees at the hiring time
Is the line on the color bar

That's just the way it is
    Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
    But don't you believe them

    The Way It Is
  • This song deals with the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. The line in the lyrics that mentions "The law passed in '64" is the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The law was supposed to prohibit discrimination in public places, the government and employment.

The lyrics in this song deal with the need to resist complacency and never resign yourself to racial injustice as the status quo.
  • This is a very unusual hit, lacking a big chorus, shifts in momentum, catchy hooks and most other elements of typical chart-toppers. With a consistent tempo and a jazz-inflected sound, it appealed to a more adult audience and added a welcome diversity to Top 40 playlists that were dominated by uptempo, synth-driven songs. It was a song grown-ups loved and their kids could tolerate, reaching the top of both the Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts.
  • Hornsby grew up in Virginia, which isn't where you would expect a song about racial and economic tolerance to originate. He was raised with these values though. Hornsby told NME: "My mother came from the New England area, and she was a little more enlightened about racial subjects than a lot of people in the South. So I had a different attitude to a lot of my friends whose parents were more conservative."

He added: "When I was brought up, the vibe I got of Martin Luther King in my town was that he was a real evil man - just the vibe in the air, that he was terrible. And if you grow up in that environment you can't help but be affected by it a little bit. Luckily, I came from a family that guarded us against that conservatism, but sure, I grew up in the thick of all that bad feeling."
  • Hornsby had been working as a staff songwriter for years with no luck getting a record deal. With his attempts to appeal to popular taste falling short, he decided to make a demo of songs in his own style - ECM jazz - and included this track. He sent the demo to a new label called Windham Hill, which specialized in vocal groups. They offered him a deal, but so did some major labels that also got a hold of it. Hornsby signed with RCA because they offered him creative freedom. They were rewarded when this song and the album became huge hits.
  • The conservative radio host Sean Hannity used an instrumental portion of this song as his show's theme for many years. Hornsby, a liberal democrat, had vastly different political views, but there was nothing he could do about Hannity using the song as long as royalties were paid.
  • The rapper Tupac Shakur used this as the basis for his song "Changes," which is a look at racism and urban life from a black perspective.
  • This was the second single released from the album, following "Every Little Kiss." It was issued in the US in September 1986 and hit the top spot on December 13.
  • Hornsby and his band were not exactly MTV-ready, but the video for this song did well on the network. In the stark performance clip, none of the musicians ever stand up - some folks were surprised when they saw Hornsby in person and realized he was 6' 4".

    Burnin' Sky Lyrics

The sky is burnin' I believe my soul's on fire,
You are, I'm learning, the key to my desire.

Waiting for the van to arrive,
The prisoners were lined up outside.
Jumped a wall, hitched a ride,
    and now I'm here to say;
Love you, baby, anyway, oh, yeah.

The sky is burnin' I believe my soul is on fire,
You are, I'm learning, the key to my desire.

Ran across the country fields, in all terrain,
they had guns and dogs and everything.
Swam a river try'n to lose my trail,
But they caught me, under the bridge. Oh yeah!

The sky is burnin' I believe my soul's on fire,
You are, I'm learning, the key to my desire.

    Oh, yeah.

The sky is burnin' I believe my soul's on fire,
You are, I am learning, the key to my desire.

The judge said, 'this man's a danger to humanity,
We're gonna lock him up and throw away the key'
Now, baby, your love has sent me to jail
But I'd rather die than see you with another man

It's burnin' baby, mm, mm; I believe my souls on fire

I believe my souls on fire,
Working on the railroad, every day
But they can't keep me here
    And I'm not gonna stay
I got to get outta this place
    I'll see you, baby.

    It's burnin', yeah, it's burnin'.
I believe my souls on fire,
    Keep on burnin',
Ah, yeah, yeah, ah, oh, oho. Keep on burnin'

    Burnin' Sky
  • Paul Rodgers (Classic Rock Revisited January 12, 2001: "I had the chorus to that. It just popped into my head one day - The Sky Is Burning. I didn't know quite why the sky was burning and my soul was on fire. We needed material for the Burning Sky album. I was in a hotel in Paris the day before we were due to go into the sessions and I needed to write some songs. We had been on the road pretty heavily and we were pretty burned. I had the chorus and I worked the chords out for it. I worked out some verse chords. I went to the studio and I had them learn the chords but we had no lyrics at all. We counted it off and hit the button. We went into it, (singing) "The sky is burning" and I wrote the lyrics on the spot. That was pretty amazing I thought. It was one take and I made the lyrics up as I went along."
