Atlas

The lead single from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack was recorded by the English band Coldplay. Their frontman, Chris Martin, is apparently a fan of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games novels, according to a press release for the song. "We are so honored that Coldplay, one of the iconic rock bands of our generation, will perform the first song out on the new soundtrack," said Tracy McKnight, Lionsgate's Head of Film Music. "Knowing that Chris Martin is a fan of the books makes this even more meaningful. The Coldplay single underscores the stature of recording artists we've assembled for this powerful soundtrack."

Director Francis Lawrence added: "I have great respect and admiration for Coldplay, and we are thrilled with how well they have connected to the themes and ideas within the film."

This marked the first time Coldplay has ever recorded an original song for a motion picture.

Chris Martin sings on this sweeping piano ballad about two people sharing the weight of the world on each other's shoulders in reference to the mutual dependance of the film's protagonists Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark.

The song's titular character, Atlas, was a Greek mythological figure, who according to legend, was condemned by Zeus for his part in the war of the Titans to bear the heavens on his shoulders. He went to live in the Atlas mountains in North Africa, which the Ancient Greeks said supported the sky.

Led Zeppelin also referenced the Greek Titan on their 1976 track "Achilles Last Stand." ("The mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the Earth.")

Talk

Coldplay received permission from the Electronica band Kraftwerk to use the main riff from their song "Computer Love" for this, replacing Kraftwerk's synthesizers with guitars, and at the same time creating a completely different song.

The band recorded 3 separate versions of this song; the one found on X&Y was based on an early cut of the song. A newer version of the track (with a different set of lyrics) was leaked onto the internet in March 2005. "Talk" was originally intended to be a B-side for the single "Speed Of Sound" before becoming the last addition to X&Y's track listing. Frontman Chris Martin explained to the NME: "What happened with 'Talk' is that it was all going great, and then someone said 'That should be the first single,' and we all just freaked out and scrapped it all. I hate choosing singles, it's so hard. (But) when we heard it mixed properly, it sounded mega."

Martin explained the album title to the NME: "It's a cooler way of saying ying and yang. If I'd called it ying and yang we'd have been in trouble! 10% would walk away. But another 20% would come. We'd be a lot bigger in the Far East. My whole day is a mixture of optimism and pessimism in its most extreme forms. And that's what X&Y is to me. It's two sides. I like the fact they're very strong letters, very clear. Very hard lines, it looks great when you write it down. And it looks great when you see the artwork. It's f---ing amazing. I can say that because I didn't do it."

'Til Kingdom Come

This song was intended for Johnny Cash. On Coldplay's "Twisted Logic" tour, Chris Martin explained that this song was written for a special event and was to be performed by Cash and Coldplay together. Unfortunately, Johnny Cash passed away before this event could be finalized.

This is a hidden track. It is represented on the X&Y package by a "+" sign on the back the case.

Chris Martin told Rolling Stone July 14, 2005 that both "A Message" and this song came from his religious upbringing. Said Martin: "'A Message' is taken from a hymn we used to sing called 'My Song Is Love Unknown,' and we'd say 'kingdom come' every week in the Lord's Prayer. One of the great things about being forced to go to church services is that we'd sing all these big songs. That's partly why I'm obsessed with getting everyone to sing along at our shows. Magic

The lead single from Ghost Stories is an intimate meditation on love sung by Chris Martin over minimalist, bass heavy instrumentation.

"Call it magic
Call it true

The song was recorded by Coldplay in 2013 during sessions for Ghost Stories at their purpose-built studios, The Bakery and The Beehive in North London.

The artwork for the release depicts a white dove imposed onto a blue canvas. It was done by British etching artist Mila Fürstová, who also created a pair of wings in the shape of a broken heart for the Ghost Stories album cover.

The song's music video was directed by Jonas Škerlund, who has previously worked with Madonna, Lady Gaga and U2. The Swedish filmmaker and video director's best known achievement is his Grammy-winning contribution to the promo of Madonna's "Ray Of Light."

The clip stars Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as a "beautiful young magicienne" in a 1920s traveling circus, with Chris Martin doubling up as both her loyal assistant and jealous husband.

Explaining the song to BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, Martin said: "It's not a question of you either really love someone or you really hate someone, it's more nuanced than that - especially with the modern world's complications - like traveling and all the stuff that comes to life, and illness and addiction and all that sort of thing."

It's just saying," he added, "ultimately there is magic between two people no matter what anyone else thinks."

Martin told Zane Lowe that the song came from a jam with the rest of Coldplay, making it one of the first band's songs not kick-started by the frontman himself.

This is about insecurity. The line, "So you lost your trust and you never should have" states that the person was so insecure that there was no reason to lose trust. Then he says, "Don't break your back if you ever hear this, don't answer that," meaning not to fret - time will do it's thing if you just think and listen. The line, "In a bulletproof vest, with the windows all closed, I'll be doing my best and I'll see you soon" means that the person protects themselves, not letting anyone in. Like many Coldplay songs, this is about love. The lyrics are about being in a conflicted, but very intense relationship as precious time slips away.

Lead singer Chris Martin came up with the lyrics and the piano riff shortly before Coldplay released the album. Since they didn't have much time, they put it aside and planned to work on it for their next album. When Martin's friend heard the demo, he convinced them to do whatever was necessary to record it for A Rush Of Blood To The Head, especially since the song deals with the importance of time.

This won the Grammy for 2003 Record Of The Year, beating out "Hey Ya" by Outkast and "Crazy In Love" by Beyoncé. In accepting the award, lead singer Chris Martin dedicated it to the late Johnny Cash and to US presidential candidate John Kerry, "Who hopefully will be your president someday."

A Sky Full Of Stars

This song was recorded during the sessions for Ghost Stories with Avicii. The Swedish EDM artist was invited by Chris Martin to play the piano and his imprint can be heard on the song's majestic piano lines. Speaking with BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, Martin, who usually tinkles the ivories on Coldplay's recordings admitted he felt like he was cheating on the band when he asked the Swede to play the piano instead of him.

Chris Martin said on Fuse: "What that song represents on Ghost Stories is the release after you've climbed the mountain - after you've done anything challenging. That's why that song is so unashamedly happy and danceable: because that's what it needed to be. I love singing it. I know we didn't break the mold, but it's just so fun to play."

A house-influenced piano-centric song with pounding bass drum, this is the closest Coldplay have come to recording a dance track.

Avicii also produced the track along with the band and Ghost Stories producers Paul Epworth, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson.

The song received its TV première on the April 29, 2014 episode of BBC 2's Later... with Jools Holland and four days later the band performed it on Saturday Night Live.

Martin told the hosts on The Kevin & Bean Show that after coming up with the idea for this song, he did something different. "What happens with our songs generally is that they get sent from the universe, however they come," he said. "I don't know where they come from, in the middle of the night they come through and I take it to the rest of the band and it gets layered up, like a car being built or something."

But this time around, he took the song straight to Avicii and had it produced by the Swedish EDM mastermind.

This was the last song Coldplay added to Ghost Stories and the band appreciated the "fresh injection" by Avicii. "The rest of the band was very gracious, as usual," Martin told Kevin and Bean. "So they said, 'We trust you and let's keep rolling.'"

Filmed by movie director Mat Whitecross (The Road to Guantanamo, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, The Shock Doctrine), the song's music video shows Chris Martin walking through King Street in Newtown, Sydney kitted out like a one-man band, before being joined by the rest of Coldplay. 250 fans were also invited to march from Newtown's Courthouse Hotel.

Speaking during a Beat x Beat webcast, Chris Martin explained how the song was created. "It needs to be about unconditional love," he said. "There will be a point where you'll be like, 'OK, I got that out of my system. Now let's go dancing.'"

Martin added that he was listening to Katy Perry's music when he was writing Ghost Stories. He borrowed the way the Californian songstress' tunes have a repetitive chord pattern with a sing-along melody over the top for this track.

This is about a guy who realizes too late that he has gotten himself into something really bad and can't get himself out. He figures out that he got there by hurting another person badly and is trying to apologize to that person.

Two music videos were made. The original UK version, directed by Sophie Muller (No Doubt, Garbage), finds the band in the Wild West, where frontman Chris Martin is held captive in a warehouse and tied to a chair. It was shot at a ranch in Newhall, California.

The US version, directed by Tim Hope, features the band members as two-dimensional figures who get caught up in a tornado and land in suburbia. The clip won for Best Art Direction at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards.

During an interview with BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, Martin was asked directly by the DJ whether the subject of the album was the breakdown of his relationship, Martin responded, "I wouldn't use the word breakdown, this was more a realization about trying to grow up basically."

The song was produced by Timbaland, who is best known for his work for R&B and hip-hop artists. The American was one of three guest producers who worked on Ghost Stories along with Avicii and Madeon.

The Jonas Škerlund-directed feel-good video was shot in Los Angeles. The director previously worked with Coldplay on their clip for "Magic."

The visual depicts two misfits in inflatable bodysuits who both love ballet. Canadian actress Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield, Pompeii) plays an aspiring ballet dancer whose large body prevents her from realizing her dreams, whilst Chris Martin portrays a mild-mannered janitor at a theater housing the dancing.

This sad, sparse, acoustic ballad finds Chris Martin pleading to a lost love to meet him again. However as she refuses to respond to his pleas, he concludes that he must learn to carry on alone.

The song is a track from Ghost Stories, a concept album about past actions, and the effects they can have on the future and one's capacity for love. The record was inspired to a large part by by the disintegration of lead singer Chris Martin's relationship with then-wife Gwyneth Paltrow. Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, Martin explained the record's lyrical content. "The idea of Ghost Stories, for me, was 'how do you let the things that happen to you in the past – your ghosts – how do you let them affect your present and your future?' Because there was a time when I was feeling like they were going to drag me down and ruin my life, and the lives of those around me." he said.

"I was very lucky to meet a very good sufi teacher who started to introduce the idea of 'if you sit with your experiences and the things you've been through, they alchemize,'" Martin continued. "At the time he said that, I didn't really know what that meant, but I trusted that it would work, and the more that I was learning about that, the more music just started flowing through."

Yellow Song Chart

Lead singer Chris Martin has said that the lyrics are about being devoted to someone, wanting to do anything for them: writing a song for them, swimming across the sea for them and so on. He said that it's not necessarily a romantic devotion, but could be about someone that you look up to and would do anything for, a brotherly love. He claims to have had no specific person in mind when he wrote it. (thanks, Adam - Sussex, England)

The band came up with the line "Look at the stars, look how they shine for you" after looking up at the night sky. They were recording in Wales, which had a nice, clear sky.

The color yellow can have many negative implications ("Yellow Journalism," "Yellow Fever," a "Yellow Card" for a foul in soccer), but for Coldplay, it is a beautiful color. According to lead singer Chris Martin, "It was simply because that word sounded nice, it just seemed to fit, no other reason. None of the other colors would have sounded right really!" The Beatles were kind to the color when they used it in their song "Yellow Submarine."

Martin initially wrote the words and melody, then the rest of the band wrote the other bits and pieces (the hook, the riff, fills, etc.).

"Yellow" is a term that can mean cowardly or afraid. From this standpoint, the singer could be afraid and nervous to show his love, until he "ran across" and "jumped across" for her. He finally got the nerve to express his love. (thanks, Stefan - Winona, MN)

This was a hit in their native England, but it didn't do nearly as well in the US, where it took Coldplay longer to catch on. The song did have tremendous crossover appeal, however, and got lots of airplay on modern rock, adult contemporary and pop radio stations.

The video is one continuous shot of Chris Martin walking on a beach in England. The plan was to shoot the band walking along a sunny beach with lots of people lying around, but Coldplay drummer Will Champion's mother died shortly before the shoot. The film crew and extras were already hired, so with the band's blessing, Martin went by himself while the other members attended the funeral. The video was shot at a fast shutter speed to achieve the slow-motion. In order for Martin to sing along, he had to lip-sync to the song played at double speed.

Coldplay was in England recording other tracks for the album while this was being mixed in New York. They hated the results of the mix and flew to New York to make sure they got the sound they were looking for.

ABC Television used this song to promote their shows. The campaign featured bright yellow backgrounds.

This won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. This was nominated for Best Rock Song, but lost to "Drops Of Jupiter" by Train.

When performing this song, Chris Martin used to change the song's melody. However, R.E.M's Michael Stipe advised against it: "Stop doing that. People want to hear the songs the way they know them." The Coldplay vocalist began singing all their songs in a straightforward way.

During the Coldplay episode of VH1's Storytellers series, Chris Martin recalled that the song was named after the book that happened to be nearest to him when we he was finishing writing it: The UK telephone directory, which is named Yellow Pages.

Martin says that his favorite color is blue, not yellow.
